[lace] Mystery object
I think it looks like a very large pincushion that hangs on the wall near a sewing machine. It has rods for spools of thread and I bet the cup hooks are to hold things like scissors. I finally found the photo you were talking about by going to her photo album. Looks like she collects old pincushions. She could live in Arizona as there is some photos of the Grand Canyon. I don't think anything can be gleaned from the Target receipt as they do not include your card details on them. Something to think about next time we take a photo to put on Facebook though. RE: [lace] Mystery object
The pic doesn't show up on The Lace Guild site but if you click on the name of the lady who asked the question and go to her home page on Fb then multiple pics for the object can be seen. I doubt very much that it can have anything to do with making of bobbin lace. The metal tabs on each corner would snag thread and the3 brass(??) posts that stick up proud of the surface on each side and then another down the bottom would also get in the way of thread and bobbin placement. And then there is the fact that it has the hanging wire on the back. whatever it is, it looks to me like it's mean to be hung on a wall. Re: [lace] Mystery object
Right, in the end I took a snap shot of the picture in my fb app on the ipad, then opened the picture up and enlarged portions of it on the ipad. I think we are looking at this sort of upside down. The cuphooks are either to hang it from something or to hang something off it. In which case they should be either at the very top or more likely at the very bottom. This means that the stickyouty bits would be on the side. I know it sounds silly but I think that this is right because when you look at the picture of the back the label has the cup hooks at the end. So, how about this is a notice board with somewhere to hand your keys off? I'm interested in other guesses. Re: [lace] Mystery object
Please never photograph a receipt of this kind and post it where others can see the details. It probably contains identifying information that bad guys may use against you. Maybe that is why we cannot see the front? Maybe she removed some photos but neglected to remove this one? Whatever -- if anyone knows how to contact Marta St John-Anders, please advise her of the danger that international members of _Lace@Arachne_ (mailto:Lace@Arachne) noted. (I g**gled and found one person with this name in Meza ARIZONA, so someone on Arachne may know her or find her in a telephone directory there.) I am also not a Facebook member, but was able to pull up the photo. Jeri Ames in Maine USA Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 2/4/2015 9:21:31 A.M. Re: [lace] Mystery object
Dear Jacqui and the gentle spiders. I have solved accessing the picture issue but not what this is. If you access fb via the apps on a tablet or phone then you have the opportunity to click on 'Posts to page'. I normally access via my browser, even on the tablet because this actually gives me more control over which things fb shows me. By accessing through a browser (safari on the ipad and chrome / ie on the pc) The picture appears to have been stripped. As Sue and others have commented the photo in the comment shows up straight away however you access. Sometimes I really feel my age. As Groucho Marx used to say; this is so easy a child of 4 could do it. Get me a child of 4. Or in my case, an SEO Optimisation expert who is half my age and that I bribe with chocolate and sits opposite me. I am now completely bemused by the article. There are cup hooks and knobs and things on it. I think a major pondering is in order accompanied by a hot chocolate, I don't think that will solve the problem of what it is but the hot chocolate will be an enjoyable compensation. Yes, you are right. The first link shows the reverse of the object and the second link takes you to the Lace Guild main page rather than the front of the object. Jacquie, I've just spoken to our experts here at work (the advantage of being rebranded IT) and we've all looked at the LG fb page but can't see the picture. They suggest that you might be able to see it as admin but I can't as a 'normal' (and I use that term loosely) person. We've use tablet and pc, safari, chrome and IE to look and can't access it. Re: [lace] Mystery object -Possible answer?
I agree that a thread holder is the best so far, but it just seems way too big. It has to be about 8 or 9 inches tall, so there is room for several spools on each wire and the holes are close to the edge of the discs, so the spools would be hanging out all round. Because of its size, and the felt on its base, it wasn't ever designed to fit into a workbox so the threads would stand uncovered. We all felt it's a modern piece, ie less than 30 years old (although if I was an e-bay seller that would be vintage at least if not vintage/antique) so why haven't we seen other ones of these. Re: [lace] Mystery object - no answer yet
"I looked at it, and I am a spinner. I think it may be a spool/bobbin for a spinning wheel." Again, I don't think so , because the base is covered with felt so it's definitely an item that may be stood on a polished surface. And what would all the little holes be for? In the base they don't go all the way through. - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [lace] Mystery object -Possible answer?
I just stopped at a rather poor "earring stand"! and felt that one of you guys (In Australia Guys is for both sexes) would know all about it. Anyway I went to my books as "sewing tools" are quite a favorite of mine after lace bobbins. So I went to my reference books. I have discovered two similar utilities. Both of these are on top of a little box with drawer in it, but the rest of the details fit. From these utilities it would appear to be for keeping reels of cotton in place, even though the wires needed are very thin. Both these illustrations show cotton reels kept on them. The "wires" are sort of firm and have a sort of "hat pin" look about them but just a ball on the top. Both the examples I have found include a "pin cushion" on the top piece. Perhaps we should consider if this did at one time sit on a small box with a drawer? There does not seem to be any evidence that there was once a pin cushion on the top. Anyway, that is what I have discovered. I hope it helps. BTW one is of USA origin, the other is of English origin. From what I can see, this is about the best bet we have so far. -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. We are a community of 5.6 million users fighting spam. [lace] Mystery object - no answer yet
Again, sorry for cross posting but it may or may not be a lace related object that I asked Malvary to post for me on Friday evening. Unusually for arachne, we didn't get an answer that seemed to fit the problem. The most likely seemed to be that it might be a thread holder, with removable wires to hold the reels. When we looked at it again though it seemed to be unlikely to be that for the following reasons 1) the holes in the discs are only about an inch apart, so only smallish spools of thread would fit. 2) if this was the case, why was it so tall in relation to the hole spacing. 3) the holes and grooves in the underside and edge of the top disc (where I thought the thread ends could come out through) were quite rough, and the grooves didn't always line up with the holes, so I don't know what they are for. 4) the holes were near the edges of the flat surface of the discs, so the spools would have hung out over the edge of the base. 5) the holes were only very small, so would the missing rods have been strong enough to hold the spools without bending, particularly if more than one spool was fitted on each to fill the space height-wise. 6) the rods would have accidently lifted up out of the holes easily, allowing the spools to fall off. The other ideas I am afraid we rejected for the following reasons: Thread holder while winding; it's too big (a similar size to the bobbin display stands ie from memory now, approx 6" discs, 1" thick post and about 8" tall) and the top should be glued in place. Hat pin stand/ear-ring holder; the hole spacing is a bit wide for the first, and why holes in the base for the latter. For both why the holes in the edges of the top disc. Hair weaving; we felt that for this it should be like a miniature marudai, and have 'legs' around the edge and a central hole in the top disc for the woven braid to go down through, unless we misunderstood what Ilske meant. Pat Read was very disappointed that we couldn't help, but I said if anyone else has any ideas I would let her know, so please have a look at the webshot photos and send me your thoughts.
