Re: [lace] Thread help needed
Hi Malvary Schappeseide is just a generic term for schappe silk - which is spun from cocoons which have hatched and have not degummed rather than ordinary spun silk which is spun from the broken bits and pieces left over after reeled/filament/nett silk has been taken from the cocoons. The only silk with a size of 120/2 that I've seen is Bart Francis Shappe which is labelled with a cotton count of 120/2 and the metric number 210/1 - but that is very fine; 45 w/cm, which is not what I would expect to use for a scarf. So, I think that you will have to go back to basics and measure the dot spacing of the pattern to determine how many wraps/cm she needs. Is it a torchon pattern? If you don't have (to hand) the latest edition of Threads for Lace then you need to look at the Addendum lists for the number of the edition that you do have plus all the later ones. Even if you have Edition 5 you still need Addendum 5 to be complete. After that if there is something not included it's because I haven't seen it. Re: [lace] Thread help
Hello Ann It depends which DMC 50 you mean. DMC Cordonnet 50 is similar thickness to Bouc 50, both are 23 wraps/cm. DMC Coton a Broder is/was finer at 30 wraps/cm and DMC Broder Machine 50 is finer still at 42 wraps/cm. Bev has already listed a number of alternatives to Bouc 70; Bockens linen 60/2 or Fresia linen 80/3 are the nearest. Of the more available cotton threads Presencia Finca 30 and Venus 70 both measure 27 wraps/cm (marginally finer). A single strand of most stranded cottons is 25 wraps/cm or thereabouts but the 2ply soft twist of those threads means that it doesn't have the 'oomph' of a linen thread. Finca is 3ply and Venus is 3x2ply so they both have more body to them. Brenda On 20 Dec 2008, at 20:52, ann.humphreys wrote: I'm sure someone will be able to tell me this. [lace] Thread - help, please?
Dear Lacemakers, I've been away from lacemaking for more than three years - getting in some part-time education meant giving up all but the most vital daily activities. (I think I've always managed to clean my teeth and provide clean shirts for my husband: every other thing has been missed at least once!) Now at last I'm trying to start making lace again, and I thought I'd go back to a favourite of mine, a torchon book-mark. It's simple, one of the first patterns I learned, and I know I've made quite a few over the years for gifts, sales-of-work, and so on. But now I can't work out what the thread is supposed to be, and I can't see anything in my box of thread which seems to be right. So I'm hoping that someone out there will recognise what is meant in the pattern, or tell me an equivalent, or at least tell me how to work out a substitute. The pattern is from Raie Clare's The Dryad Book of Bobbin Lace, the book from which I taught myself . . . quite a long time ago. It was published in 1987, in case that helps. The thread prescribed is Swedish linen thread no. 90. Although I've looked through Ian Austin's chart, and Brenda Paternoster's invaluable booklet, Threads for Lace, there is no mention of a thread with that name, so I'm guessing that it's not a brand name but something generic. This doesn't help me, as I've never been any good at understanding all that business of turns and wraps and deniers. However, I do have quite a lot of thread, (most of it still has the labels attached, too!), so I'm hoping you will be able to help me to find something to wind on my bobbins. After that, it's just a simple matter of throwing the bobbins around, of course . . . Well, I'm grateful to think that I'm sure I can turn to my Arachne friends whenever I come on yet another blank spot in my memory. Re: [lace] Thread help
Hello Amanda This topic came up a while ago. Although Karen Marie Iversen refers to lurex thread, Lurex is a brand name and what she uses is NOT Lurex brand, although it is a metallic. It's one of the finer Madeira metallic threads which she uses; Madeira Art No 9842 comes up several times in the .pdf file - that's Madeira Metallic No 40 (35 w/cm), but also Art No 9807 which is No 6 (18 w/cm) and Art no 9809 which is No 12 (20 w/cm). There are so many different Madeira metallics, but I *think* she uses Supertwist, in white/translucent for the worker pairs. Re: [lace] thread help please
No, I haven't seen that thread (yet!) The way I make a wrapping is to draw the parallel lines exactly 1 cm apart, using the computer, and print out onto paper. Then take a strip of the paper and fold it around a small piece of card so that it's stiff enough to handle and the lines are straight across the width. Wrap so that the threads lie close together, touching but not overlapping and count. I then repeat the winding - if it's the same number that's it, if it's different I rewind again and generally two of the three windings will have given the same result. Re: [lace] thread help: daliam cotton thread, lace in literature
Hello Julie Daliam cotton is not in Edition 3, or Addendum 3 as I've never seen it! If anyone has some.. Looking at the scale of the pricking, and the picture of the lace, I'd guess that it's some sort of pearl cotton. Also if you measure the average pinhole distance (it comes to 4.5mm) and then look at http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/lace/threadsize/threadsize.html you'll see that 10 wraps/pinhole space for that scale needs a thread measured at 22 wraps/cm - give or take a couple of wraps. DMC and Anchor Perle 12 are both 21 w/cm so substitute either of those. That threadsize chart is in Ed 3 instead of the sample prickings. BTW, you do all know that you should look at Addendum 3 from time to time as it gets updates as and when anything different turns up. I bought some more Bart Francis threads yesterday at Tonbridge and Pat gave me a few more Valdani samples; they have just been added. Hi Shirlee and Patty, Just a note about assessing the size of threads. Brenda compares them by counting the number of wraps needed to cover One Centimetre, not an inch. (Very different results) Fil a Dentelle is 30 wrpas and equivalent threads would be Special Dentelles, Broder Special 50 DMC Cordonnet 80. Also YLI quilting thread which works up quite nicely. I have several skeins of DMC metallic floss am wondering if a strand or two of this would be an appropriate substitute? MEZ Effektgarn fine metallic is 2 ply with 30 wraps per inch DMC metallic floss is 2 ply with 21 wraps per inch The DMC is half again as thick as the MEZ For reference, Fil A Dentelle is 30 wraps per inch. Any metallic that is about the same size as tatting cotton could be used. If all you have for metallic accent is the DMC metallic floss, used a crochet cotton of about the same size, DMC size 30 cordonnet (crochet thread) is 20 wraps per inch and DMC size 40 is 22 wraps per inch. DMC Perle Cotton size 12 is 21 wraps per inch. (Personally I like to tat with perl cotton. It tats softer than normal tatting thread because it has fewer plies and less twist.) Note: Most metallic threads are a thin metallized polyester strip wrapped around a carrying thread. Some metallics have a strong tendency to unwrap and snarl when tatted. I don't know of particular threads to recommend that behave better or worse. Note: All these numbers cited at wraps per inch is the method Brenda uses to compare the relative thickness of threads. Thin threads can be wrapped around a card many more times than thick threads can. The wrap number is a good index of whether two threads are very nearly the same size or not. NOW can you start your project? I hope so. Sometimes I just want to go do it! [lace] Thread Help Request
Thanks to those of you who recommended Brenda Paternoster's book on thread conversions! I have ordered it but have no idea when it's going to arrive. Probably not today, I am wanting to start a new lace project, so could someone please help me? Like I said in my initial posting, I have all sizes of tatting threads. Would any tatting threads be comparable to Fil a Dentelle? Also, I have a pattern calling for Mez Effektgarn fine metallic thread. I have several skeins of DMC metallic floss am wondering if a strand or two of this would be an appropriate substitute?
