[lace-chat] Lace on stamps - my re-organised web pages.

2019-03-03 Thread Ann McClean
I've just spent the last week re-organising my Lace Stamps webpage - so
what do you think?
Not all stamps are featured as yet as I wanted to make sure that the
layout and links worked 1st.
Would also be interested how you view my website - Desktop PC, tablet or
phone?

N.B. this is NOT a selling post.

[lace-chat] Selling my lace bobbins :(

2016-09-11 Thread Ann McClean
After not making bobbin lace for over 15 years [due to osteo-arthritis]
and 4 house moves later, I've started sorting through my 500+ lace
bobbins that I collected over the years from various places - both home
and overseas, with a view to giving other lacemakers the chance to enjoy
them.

I've begun listing them on eBid.co.uk, but it's going to be a long job !

Please email me for a direct link as I don't think I can post it here.

Could someone also forward my post to Lace as I'm not on that list.

Many thanks,

Ann McClean

[lace-chat] Charity fundraising on eBid.uk

2015-03-13 Thread Ann McClean

I hope it's OK to post this - so please delete if you're not interested.

I participate in the monthly charity auctions - Your Donation Counts -
on uk.eBid.net
and this month we're raising funds to help a local school to me here in
Newtown, Powys, UK
buy a Defibrillator to keep on the school premises. The approx. cost
for one is around £800-£1000.
Did you know that there is a rising incidence of heart attacks in
children and the nearest AE dept.
for Newtown is over an hours drive away in Shrewsbury. We only have a
MIU here that is based

at the local Surgery and only open 9-5 M-F :(

The YDC auctions run from 24-28th each month and there's usually 150-200
items listed from the UK,
USA Australia - and sometimes from other countries inbetween. Quite a
few are up already although

any bidding cannot start until 24th :)

More information can be found here:
http://www.annmcclean.co.uk/eBid/YDC130_Penygloddfa.html

I hope some of you will join us for YDC130 and look forward to seeing
you there.

[lace-chat] Lace books

2014-06-20 Thread Ann McClean

(Hope it is OK to post this)

With retirement looming, the time has come to downsize my collection of
lacemaking books acquired over the last 25+ years.

I am gradually listing the remaining books on http://uk.ebid.net/ - you
will find them here http://bit.ly/1jMyvjY

Everything else that's lace-related remains here http://bit.ly/RT8Lvn

There are all sorts of titles covering history of lace, fashion,
exhibition catalogues, journals from the Lace Guild, lace bobbins, etc.

eBid works in the same way as ebay, just not so well known, but
definitely friendlier :)

I have a baby grandson in Australia that I need to visit as well, so
needs must !

[lace-chat] Used postage stamps

Hi Margery,

I send my stamps to the PDSA RSPB to help with their fund raising.

Most of the major charities will accept used postage stamps as they can then
sell them on to stamp dealers.

A quick google would find details :)

So much of the post we receive is franked, that when letters come with
proper stamps I cut them off (including the postmark) and save those.

I now have a fair handful of stamps - mostly UK ordinary ones, some UK
Christmas ones, a few from other countries.

It would be a pity to throw them away - would anyone like to have
them? If there's more than one reply then I'll put names in a hat.

[lace-chat] Ravel's Bolero @ Copenhagen Train Station

2011-10-09 Thread Ann McClean
On May 2, 2011, the Copenhagen Philharmonic amazed commuters at the
Copenhagen Central Train Station, as they created a kind of orchestral
flash mob – performing Ravel's famed Bolero, with the musicians gradually
assembling in place as the work progresses. The video – which shows not only
the assembling orchestra, but also the delighted faces of the commuters –
has generated overwhelming interest, and indeed has exceeded the orchestra’s
expectations.

[lace-chat] Dress embroiderers were kept in the dark

2011-04-30 Thread Ann McClean

Royal wedding: Dress embroiderers were kept in the dark

It has emerged that the embroiderers who beautifully hand
crafted Kate Middleton's dress did not know the designer's
identity until shortly before the public announcement.

Lace featured heavily in the dress, with it having a lace applique
bodice and skirt, and veil.

The lace work was carried out at the studios of the Royal School of
Needlework

(RSN), at Hampton Court Palace by embroiderers aged from 19 to in their 70s.
They had to wash their hands every 30 minutes to keep the lace and threads
pristine, and the needles were renewed every three hours, to keep them
sharp and clean.

[lace-chat] St. Catherine's Day

2010-11-24 Thread Ann McClean

from the Daily telegraph website this morning:

The Prince and Miss Middleton did not have a specific date in mind when
they told aides they wanted a spring wedding, but April 29 quickly became
their first choice as they looked at the possibilities.
The couple expressed a strong desire to have a spring wedding on a Friday,
said a royal insider. Lent and Easter made it difficult to have it any
earlier, so they settled on a day which happens to be St Catherine's Day,
though that was entirely serendipitous.

Hasn't someone got his saints days wrong - St. Catherine's Day is 25
November, surely?

[lace-chat] Wrapping presents with a Cat :)

2009-12-22 Thread Ann McClean

For Christiane:

Wrapping Presents with a Cat

1.. Clear large space on table for wrapping present.

2.. Go to closet and collect bag in which present is contained, and shut
door.

3.. Open door and remove cat from closet.

4.. Go to cupboard and retrieve rolls of wrapping paper.

5.. Go back and remove cat from cupboard.

6.. Go to drawer, and collect transparent sticky tape, ribbons, scissors,
labels, etc. . .

7.. Lay out presents and wrapping materials on table, to enable wrapping
strategy to be formed.

8.. Go back to drawer to get string, remove cat that has been in the drawer
since last visit and collect string.

9.. Remove present from bag.

10.. Remove cat from bag.

11.. Open box to check present, remove cat from box, replace present.

12.. Lay out paper to enable cutting to size.

13.. Try and smooth out paper, realize cat is underneath and remove cat.

14.. Cut the paper to size, keeping the cutting line straight.

15.. Throw away first sheet as cat chased the scissors, and tore the paper.

16.. Cut second sheet of paper to size - by putting cat in the bag the
present came in.

7.. Place present on paper.

18.. Lift up edges of paper to seal in present. Wonder why edges don't
reach. Realize cat is between present and paper. Remove cat.

19.. Place object on paper, to hold in place while tearing transparent
sticky tape.

20.. Spend 20 minutes carefully trying to remove transparent sticky tape
from cat with pair of nail scissors.

21.. Seal paper with sticky tape, making corners as neat as possible.

22.. Look for roll of ribbon. Chase cat down hall in order to retrieve
ribbon.

23.. Try to wrap present with ribbon in a two-directional turn.

24.. Re-roll ribbon and remove paper, which is now torn due to cat's
enthusiastic ribbon chase.

25.. Repeat steps 13-20 until you reach last sheet of paper.

26.. Decide to skip steps 13-17 in order to save time and reduce risk of
losing last sheet of paper. Retrieve old cardboard box that is the right
size for sheet of paper.

27.. Put present in box, and tie down with string.

28.. Remove string, open box and remove cat.

29.. Put all packing materials in bag with present and head for locked room.

30.. Once inside lockable room, lock door and start to relay out paper and
materials.

31.. Remove cat from box, unlock door, put cat outside door, close and
relock.

32.. Repeat previous step as often as is necessary (until you can hear cat
from outside door)

33.. Lay out last sheet of paper. (This will be difficult in the small area
of the toilet, but do your best)

34.. Discover cat has already torn paper. Unlock door go out and hunt
through various cupboards, looking for sheet of last year's paper.Remember
that you haven't got any left because cat helped with this last year as
well.

35.. Return to lockable room, lock door, and sit on toilet and try to make
torn sheet of paper look presentable.

36.. Seal box, wrap with paper and repair by very carefully sealing with
sticky tape. Tie up with ribbon and decorate with bows to hide worst areas.

37.. Label. Sit back and admire your handiwork, congratulate yourself on
completing a difficult job.

38.. Unlock door, and go to kitchen to make drink and feed cat.

39.. Spend 15 minutes looking for cat until coming to obvious conclusion.

40.. Unwrap present, untie box and remove cat.

41.. Go to store and buy a gift.

Merry Christmas to one and all, and best wishes for 2010.

[lace-chat] Re: 'Something' may have moved into the compost bin

2009-12-08 Thread Ann McClean

The saga of what was in/under the compost bin has been resolved - a rat.

After we'd emptied the bin and re-set it on concrete slabs, the 'visitor'
came
back and moved in under the slabs, and also managed to still get into the
bin

through a minute overhang.

Badge (our Jack Russell) flushed it out this lunchtime after much
digging

.. I saw it's face
It got away across next door's garden (Eric saw it) and into the next field.

So the bin is now surrounded by rocks and bricks and big stones to try and
stop the blighter digging in again.

Needless to say, Badge is covered in mud, as am I, and she needs a bath!

[lace-chat] eBay UK listings not showing on .com searches anymore

2007-04-03 Thread Ann McClean

I know that there are quite a few of you who use eBay and buy from eBayUK
listers - myself included.

However, are you aware that in their wisdom, eBay are now excluding eBayUK
listings from general eBay.com searches? BUT eBay.com items are being shown
on UK searches!

I didn't know this until last weekend when I happened on a thread in the UK
eBay Forums - and it's hitting UK listers hard, very hard. I'm OK as it's
not
my main source of income - it pays for our holidays :), but even I have
noticed

the lack of overseas interest in my listings.

It's the fact that eBay didn't publicise this change that has got people's
backs up most - even major sellers had no idea why their sales had dropped
by over 60%+ in less than 3 months, as not everyone reads the eBay Boards
[I don't as a rule].

SO, from now on, when you do an eBay.com search, please tick world wide
down on the left-hand side if you want to see what's available from UK-based
[and other non-U.S.] listers :) OR log onto eBay.co.uk and search there
instead :)

If anyone wants the relevant Forum links, please email me privately, as it's
not just the eBay Forums that are running discussions about this.

2007-02-09 Thread Ann McClean
Many thanks to everyone for their various suggestions regarding getting rid
of this invasive plant.

Will give some of them a go when I can get back out into the garden - we're
under 6+ of snow at the moment :(
No cars can get up or down our lane, it's sheet ice where the snow has
compacted because of the huge farm tractors
that go up and down it each day - and the drivers don't stop to spread the
salt grit from the heaps left by the Council;

we do it at risk of broken limbs - and the lane's still impassable :(

I'm not sure what plant you mean, as the thing I know as perennial
cornflower does not have a sharp leaf. Do you know the latin name at all?
Are you wanting to get rid of it without using chemicals or not?

[lace-chat] How to get rid of perennial cornflowers?

2007-02-05 Thread Ann McClean
My front flower bed is being over run by perennial cornflowers - and I want
to get rid of them.
They have a long tap root, which even if a smidgeon is left in the ground,
will grow again.

Any ideas for a relatively painless way to treat them so that they just
shrivel up ..

The main resaon I hate them is that they have razor sharp leaves that can
slice your hands

open if you're not aware :(

Grateful for any advice.

[lace-chat] Lace makers move into G-strings :)

2007-01-30 Thread Ann McClean

From the BBC News website:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6312429.stm

Renowned lace makers in the Polish village of Koniakow have found a new way
of boosting sales - sexy underwear.
Artisans who used to create gowns and altar cloths for customers such as the
late Pope now craft G-strings and other lingerie for sale all over the
world.
They say the underwear is quicker to make and easier to sell than
traditional

goods such as tablecloths.

[lace-chat] Prawn allergy - followup

2006-12-16 Thread Ann McClean
My thanks to everyone who emailed regarding my nasty reaction to eating
prawns last week.

Spoke to the emergency doctor and as I hadn't suffered any breathing
problems or skin rashes, he thought it was more of
an intolerance than an allergy - and to steer clear of shellfish in future -
and I love prawns! With hindsight, I've had reactions

before over the past 2 years, but nothing as severe as last week.

I now have a prescription for antihistamine which I now have to carry with
me at all times - but they send me to sleep!

BUT am seeing my own doctor in the New Year and see what she says.

[lace-chat] Reactions to eating prawns?

2006-12-11 Thread Ann McClean
I've eaten prawns twice this last week and appear to be having a reaction
within hours of extreme pain in my shoulder
joints and discomfort down my arms for quite a few hours afterwards. Does
this happen to anyone else?

The 1st attack was after a Prawn Curry [frozen prawns jar sauce]; I woke
at about 2.30 a.m. with excruciating pain in
both shoulders and aches and tingles down both arms and puffy hands.
Couldn't get comfortable so sat up for about
an hour until it began to ease slightly then managed to doze for a while.
Once up and about, took pain killers.
The 2nd time was yesterday afternoon at a friends house where we had a light
lunch of crusty bread and cheese + cold
prawns with a dip. I had a reaction almost at once and once home, spent the
rest of the evening with a hot water bottle

stuck to my shoulder.

Today - I'm fine :) I do have arthritis, and it has been very damp this
past week, but I don't think it's that.

Am I right in thinking that it's the prawns that are at fault.

[lace-chat] Probs downloading pictures from camera - Solved

2006-03-29 Thread Ann McClean
Thanks to Tech Support Guy Forums http://gladiator-antivirus.com/forum/
problem solved - I had recently downloaded RealPlayer to use with
listening to BBC Radio online - and it knocked out the Scanner Camera

I simply removed the program with Control Panel\Add or Remove Programs and

[lace-chat] Any David Bowie fans out there?

2006-01-16 Thread Ann McClean
I have been given a poster [the 1st of many] of David Bowie to put onto
eBay.

BUT the poster is rolled and sealed, and can I find anything similar
to borrow :) - it dates from the 70s and he is in a striped,
figure-hugging
bodysuit? I can only see the legs bit - and the background is flecked or
spotty.

It was published in 1983, so think it must be from his Ziggy Stardust/
Aladdin Zane period in the 70s - but I can't take a picture of a rolled
poster now can I? Also, I'm not opening it unless I have to as that
would spoil the mint condition of the poster - so any ideas anyone?

Unfortunately a couple of Secret pal packages have gone astray this
round. I believe they all had some sort of return address on, but
without one it is even less traceable.

ALL the parcels I've received in Melbourne for the last 6 months or so
have been opened by Customs, even though they all had sender's ID at the
back, and whether they were flat (magazines) or parcel shaped! The repair
job on the wrapping was appalling and pretty useless.
I also received 2 letters from my father (at different times), which had
been roughly open at the top, enough for someone to check whether the
letter contained banknotes or not. They didn't, but they did contain
stamps and newspaper articles, and I don't know whether anything did fall
out of them, as Dad couldn't remember what stamps and articles he had
sent. I sent one of the envelopes to the Postmaster General with a
complaint, but haven't heard anything at all. I think some employees are
taking advantage of the reign of terror to see if there is anything for
them to snatch!!
I used to be very happy with our postal services, but am rapidly revising
my opinion.

2004-10-23 Thread Ann McClean
The compnay I work for would kill you for this !!!

You wouldn't believe the number of calls I take at work asking why they have
to
use a 0870 number, particulalrly for enquiries about delayed/damaged orders!

I never use the IVR menu whenever I call my bank, or whatever, as I can't be
doing with all that nonsense either. That's why I try and do everything
online,
no hanging about and as long as BT is playing ball, it's so much quicker.

Jean wrote: Alternative phone numbers - specific to UK

Many UK companies have 0870 telephone numbers, and when you ring them you
get a series of menus. Although the cost is fixed for all 0870 numbers
(unlike 0900 ones) of about 7.5 pence per minute, the company still gets a
cut, and the longer they can keep you going through menus, the more money
they get from the call.

To cut the cost to you, you could try 'pretending' not to have a star button
on your phone. Apparently this gets you through to a human quicker than the
menus, although I haven't tried it. Alternatively, here's a web site which
gives alternative telephone numbers for companies (sometimes 0800 ones which
are free, otherwise geographical ones which can be a lot cheaper than the
0870 one). The article that contained the web site URL says that these
numbers are reserved for sales channels, but that they end up at the same
call centre as the 0870 ones.

May I just thank everyone who got back to me about the lovely blue flower
we saw whilst on holiday in Southern France - it was Morning Glory.

I gather it's a cousin of the Bindweed and just as rampant in the right
conditions :(

DH I have just returned from a week's holiday in Southern France.

We stayed in Laroque des Alberes, a village at the foot of the Chaine des
Alberes mountain range which in turn is the eastern end of the Pyrenees.

Everywhere we went we saw a particular climbing flower - which I cannot
find the name of! The flower was a trumpet shape, about the size of
bindweed, and an intense Mediteranean blue in colour.
The leaves were trefoil shaped, about the size of sycamore.
And it was the one subject I didn't take a picture of :(

At first I thought it was a clematis, but the flower construction and
the leaves don't match - hence my request.

Can anyone help? Have done an image search on Google, and plenty
of oleander and bourgainvillea which we also saw lots of, but not this
  particular one.

2004-09-28 Thread Ann McClean
  Many thanks, Pauline.

I believe it is a vine type of Morning Glory. Did a Google image search
after receiving
 your e-mail and found a website http://www.exoticplants.org.uk/index.html
devoted to
Morning Glories and there was a picture of the intense blue flower with the
trefoil leaf.

I didn't realise that Morning Glory Bindweed are the same family, or that
it could be
a vine as well. Have e-mailed for more information as wouldn't mind
getting one if
 it's suitable for the U.K. climate :)

  Hi Ann,

Could it be the intense blue of Morning Glory, which is the same family as
the white wild columbine.

[lace-chat] Sending goods to an APO address

2004-07-10 Thread Ann McClean
Fellow spiders,

Grateful for any advice you can offer.

A purchaser of mine on eBay has given an APO address - as far as I
know, I can't send goods to an APO address unless in the US or in the
military myself - is that right.

The purchaser claims that she has no other i.e. civilian address that I can
use.

Help!

[lace-chat] PayPal in Australia

2004-01-15 Thread Ann McClean
Fellow Spiders,

My son is flying out to Australia at the end of February for an extended
stay, and I have persuaded him to open a PayPal Personal account as
an easy way to transfer funds from the UK [i.e. is me selling his 350-odd
CDs on eBay and passing on the proceeds :)]

He will be opening an Australian bank account - so my question is - will he
be able to transfer funds from a Sterling PayPal account to an Australian
bank account? I assume he can, although when I transfer funds to him, I
only get the choice of Sterling, $, Yen or Euros!

Grateful for any advice, etc, as always.

RE: [lace-chat] XP, computers and firewalls

2003-10-02 Thread Ann McClean
Don't rely on XP's own firewall - it's just not strong enough.

I run XP, with Norton Anti-Virus + Zone Alarm for firewall protection
For a free download goto: http://www.zonelabs.com/
ZoneAlarm usually comes top in any survey run by the UK computer magazines.

I also use SpyBot Search Destroy - freeware from
http://security.kolla.de
to root out unwanted cookies and other spyware.

Another useful utlity is Pop-Up Stopper which stops those annoying pop-up
ads
- again a free download from http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html

I'm no expert, but I managed to download and set these programs up by myself
without reference to my DH!

Hope this helps.
