On the one hand I can remember having Airfix models of some of those aircraft, followed on from Airfix models of second world war military aircraft and ships, and there was a certain beauty, and most certainly awe, of the V-bombers and the Lightning. On the other hand it was scary. This was the time of MAD (that's Mutually Assured Destruction for you youngsters, a term coined in the early 50's). I remember '62 and the Cuban Missile Crisis. I may have been a youngster still at school but it' remains vivid. Despite turbulence, terrorism and the rest in the world today this is probably the nearest we came to world annihilation. I watched the documentary on ITV, and those climbing the walls at the turnstiles were just trying to get out of a crush developing there, in a similar fashion to those being lifted out of the back of the stand into the seats. Anyone remember how packed it was in there for the Coventry game? Or the crush at the turnstiles at St Andrews when barriers collapsed, fences buckled? The day that poor lad was killed when that wall fell on him. If the fence hadn't given way at those turnstiles to relieve the pressure that day, that would have been our Hillsborough. I'm used to being in surges and packed ends, but that was different. It became so packed outside those turnstiles my feet were off the floor, I couldn't raise my arms and had tunnel vision. I remember thinking fuck, I'm going to die here. Re: [LU] nonLU - MAC stuff
You can find out whether your machine is affected by opening up the Terminal application and typing: defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment If you get the message “The domain/default pair of (/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info, LSEnvironment) does not exist”, you must then enter: defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES If you get the message ”The domain/default pair of (/Users/joe/.MacOSX/environment, DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES) does not exist”, then your Mac is safe. Basically, the “does not exist” message means you’re clean. If you see anything other than those messages, you can check out F-Secure’s guide to removing the Flashback trojan. Re: [LU] Riots
After Mark Duggan was shot by police, (I have no problems with that, you carry a firearm it's a risk you run, tuff titty) that part of the highroad was closed off for a couple of days as a crime scene. This meant that locals were having to walk through a nearby park to bypass the closed off section of the high street. Part of that route was through a poorly lit park where muggings were commonplace after dark. A lot of the locals were up in arms that the police wouldn't provide extra plod to safeguard people walking that way after dark. I saw no 'anarchist' involvement in Tottenham, and to be fair, anarchists don't usually go looting, they just like top smash stuff up. After the initial protest at the police station, things got a bit heated as the police refused to send out a representative to meet the group. It was after this as darkness started to fall that the local 'yoofs' grasped the opportunity to have a go at the police. Sensing the police inability to take control of the situation, it then started to descend into anarchy and looting. Blackberry BBM was then used to orchestrate the looting of the nearby retail park at Tottenham Hale, knowing the police would be too occupied trying to contain events in the high street to respond quickly to the looting going on at the retail park. After that, the tactic has been used to loot other shops. It's all about personal gain and organised crime, which is why retail outlets, particularly phones electronics suppliers have been targeted. What happened in Ealing for instance was a gang of about 250-300 from outside the area just looting the high street and basically being cunts. From a legal point of view anybody with a local passport is a citizen. Citizen: A legally recognized subject or national of a state or commonwealth, either native or naturalized. However I take your point this has been abused by a vast majority of people who are not linked to the initial incident. A bit like hooligans that go to football games to pick a fight, not to watch football. I also agree that waving a shooting arm at police is asking for trouble. And again, let's not try and link what is happening with the shooting in Tottenham, it is totally unrelated and the vast majority of those looting wouldn't even know the blokes name. The bloke who was shot was waving around a firearm, so let's also not infer that this was another innocent victim or police brutality. -Original Message- From: leedslist-boun...@gn.apc.org [mailto:leedslist-boun...@gn.apc.org] On Behalf Of Eric B Sent: 10 August 2011 10:27 To: McWilliams, Brendan, VF-Group (bmcwill) Cc: leedslist Subject: Re: [LU] Riots maybe they re not using plastic bullets because they dont want to risk killing kids? Re: [LU] Let's Not Forget Them
Were you at that game Damian? But for a fence giving way, that was a whisker away from being a hillsborough outside the turnstiles. Also only one of a couple of occasions I had actually resigned myself to the fact I was probably about to die. Re: [LU] Let's Not Forget Them
I was outside the turnstiles in that fenced off square that the mounted police kept forcing more and more people into. I remember the barriers buckling under the pressure and realising that if I got a foot caught in them and went down, there was no getting up again. Not long after that I realised my feet were no longer on the floor and I couldn't move my arms, all I could do was put my head back and look upwards. I started to get tunnel vision at that point and had already resigned myself to being crushed to death. To this day, I can still feel the release of pressure as the fence on the far side buckled and gave way. I really felt for those poor bastards at Hillsboro, when ever I see any of that footage it takes me back to that day in Birmingham. You are quite right about the WMP that day too, some of those fuckers should have been up on a manslaughter charges for the death of that lad. I hold the police directly responsible for the events of that day even though there was a minority of Leeds fans happy for trouble and there was also a large contingent of Birmingham fans who were allowed to riot with impunity.
