Talking of TV, anyone seen Drifters, the female version of the Inbetweeners,
set in Leeds, uses the Amanda Palmer Leeds United song as the theme tune

Subject: [LU] Non-LU : The Cold War

 Absolutely non LU this.

Who else has been watching the BBC Cold War series? Me for one and it's with
a mixed feeling and emotions. Younger members of this list may only now
about it from history, and maybe not even then. For some of us it was
 reality

Just been watching Cold War, Hot Jets. On the one hand I can remember having
Airfix models of some of those aircraft, followed on from Airfix models of
second world war military aircraft and ships, and there was a certain
beauty, and most certainly awe, of the V-bombers and the Lightning. On the
other hand it was scary. This was the time of MAD (that's Mutually Assured
Destruction for you youngsters, a term coined in the early 50's). I remember
'62 and the Cuban Missile Crisis. I may have been a youngster still at
school but it' remains vivid. Despite turbulence, terrorism and the rest in
the world today this is probably the nearest we came to world annihilation.

My first reaction to try and do something about it was to join the Civil
Defence but it didn't take to long to realize how futile that was. Shades of
Raymond Briggs and there was Peter Jenkin's The War Game.
Commissioned by the BBC but they though it too scary to show till many years
later. Saw it at the filmhouse top of Vicar Lane in Leeds. And then there
was Dr. Stangelove (or how I learnt to stop worrying and love the war). So
it became CND and Alderston marches.

That was living in interesting times

Re: [LU] Justice for the 96

2012-09-17 Thread sinisterpicturesDB
I watched the documentary on ITV, and those climbing the walls at the
turnstiles were just trying to get out of a crush developing there, in a
similar fashion to those being lifted out of the back of the stand into the
seats.

Anyone remember how packed it was in there for the Coventry game? Or the crush
at the turnstiles at St Andrews when barriers collapsed, fences buckled? The
day that poor lad was killed when that wall fell on him.

If the fence hadn't given way at those turnstiles to relieve the pressure that
day, that would have been our Hillsborough. I'm used to being in surges and
packed ends, but that was different. It became so packed outside those
turnstiles my feet were off the floor, I couldn't raise my arms and had tunnel
vision. I remember thinking fuck, I'm going to die here. When I hear the

We have no news about the process of take over. But it was accepted theory
that Colin is the litmus test.
Last night's WACCOE TWITTER are alive with rumours that Colin is on his
 bike very soon.
The main problems are that the TWITTER rumour is from an agent in the know
[Thomas Brookes @tom_ifm ] the significance can be either that there is a
 T/O or the opposite!!!
I am loath to speculate right now after seeing the number of rubbish
rumours that have made the rounds. But I do think that if a rumour might be
true then Brookes is in the right place to know, is 'named' has a lot to
lose if caught out telling porkies. Add to that Colins veiled newspaper
threats at the beginning of the week. I do believe that if he goes then we
will hear more about the T/O.
I am more prone to think that it means the negotiations are not allowing
 Colin to succeed.

In short it may well be that Robert Heath was prescient indeed.

 But [short] time will tell.

Re: [LU] nonLU - MAC stuff

2012-04-13 Thread sinisterpicturesDB
You can find out whether your machine is affected by opening up the Terminal
application and typing:

defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment

If you get the message “The domain/default pair of
(/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info, LSEnvironment) does not exist”, you
must then enter:

defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES

If you get the message ”The domain/default pair of
(/Users/joe/.MacOSX/environment, DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES) does not exist”, then
your Mac is safe. Basically, the “does not exist” message means you’re clean.

If you see anything other than those messages, you can check out F-Secure’s
guide to removing the Flashback trojan.

football contracts tend to be more binding and can only be cancelled by
mutual agreement - this is what the transfer fee is for.
There is nothing to stop him asking for a transfer or leaving at the
 end
of his contract with Leeds however asking to be released and withdrawing
 his
labour until then is a clear breach, if you hand in your notice your
employer is still fully entitled to expect you to work until your end
 date -
assuming you are still being paid.
In this case Leeds are in the right and should hold him to the
conditions and terms he signed up to - the PFA would be adamant that Leeds
 upheld their side.

Re: [LU] Riots

2011-08-10 Thread sinisterpicturesDB
After Mark Duggan was shot by police, (I have no problems with that, you carry
a firearm it's a risk you run, tuff titty) that part of the highroad was closed
off for a couple of days as a crime scene. This meant that locals were having
to walk through a nearby park to bypass the closed off section of the high
street. Part of that route was through a poorly lit park where muggings were
commonplace after dark. A lot of the locals were up in arms that the police
wouldn't provide extra plod to safeguard people walking that way after dark. I
saw no 'anarchist' involvement in Tottenham, and to be fair, anarchists don't
usually go looting, they just like top smash stuff up.

After the initial protest at the police station, things got a bit heated as the
police refused to send out a representative to meet the group. It was after
this as darkness started to fall that the local 'yoofs' grasped the opportunity
to have a go at the police. Sensing the police inability to take control of the
situation, it then started to descend into anarchy and looting. Blackberry BBM
was then used to orchestrate the looting of the nearby retail park at Tottenham
Hale, knowing the police would be too occupied trying to contain events in the
high street to respond quickly to the looting going on at the retail park.

After that, the tactic has been used to loot other shops. It's all about
personal gain and organised crime, which is why retail outlets, particularly
phones electronics suppliers have been targeted. What happened in Ealing for
instance was a gang of about 250-300 from outside the area just looting the
high street and basically being cunts.

But thats my opinion only. Apparently another trigger was rough policing to
a peaceful protest that demanded justice. Maybe its a clue that rough
policing will trigger further violent escalations?

From a legal point of view anybody with a local passport is a citizen.

Citizen: A legally recognized subject or national of a state or

However I take your point this has been abused by a vast majority of people
who are not linked to the initial incident. A bit like hooligans that go to
football games to pick a fight, not to watch football.

I also agree that waving a shooting arm at police is asking for trouble. I
wouldnt want to be the police officer having to make that call.

Luckily it seems to be being brought under control now, but if it wasn't
then there is a very good risk of some of us citizens standing up to them
ourselves, and that could indeed be called a civil war.

And again, let's not try and link what is happening with the shooting in
Tottenham, it is totally unrelated and the vast majority of those looting
wouldn't even know the blokes name. The bloke who was shot was waving
around a firearm, so let's also not infer that this was another innocent
 victim or police brutality.

I note that quite a few people wants the army involved however I d say that
putting the army against your own citizens is similar to a civil war in many
 respects.
I understand these are riots but hey... Hence I agree this is a job for the

I was outside the turnstiles in that fenced off square that the mounted police
kept forcing more and more people into. I remember the barriers buckling under
the pressure and realising that if I got a foot caught in them and went down,
there was no getting up again. Not long after that I realised my feet were no
longer on the floor and I couldn't move my arms, all I could do was put my head
back and look upwards. I started to get tunnel vision at that point and had
already resigned myself to being crushed to death. To this day, I can still
feel the release of pressure as the fence on the far side buckled and gave way.

I really felt for those poor bastards at Hillsboro, when ever I see any of that
footage it takes me back to that day in Birmingham.

You are quite right about the WMP that day too, some of those fuckers should
have been up on a manslaughter charges for the death of that lad.
