Depending on what iRiver, you might eke a bit more life out of it if you put RockBox on it. http://www.rockbox.org/ - Si On 25/10/2012 09:09, Kneale, Andy wrote: Doom und gloom, re: my iRiver. What are the List's best recommendations for a reliable, simple to use, 20GB+ player that doesn't cost the earth, and doesn't crash every 5 minutes. I don't want it to do anything else but play music; I don't need it to store photos, be a phone, access the web, tell me if my brother has reached the airport (ok I haven't got a brother), give me the latest recipe for duchess potatoes, etc, etc. I don't care if it's the size of a house brick, as long as it works. From looking at reviews on Amazon, it seems all the players have their faults. [LU] Non-LU: More tech help required.
Well, since this list seems full of technical expertise, I too have a problem: I have an iRiver MP3 player which is 7 years old, and the hard disk still has about 25% free space. A few days ago, I bought two downloads from Amazon: a single track and a whole album. They played fine on my PC, and I sync'd up my music folder with my iRiver using Jukebox Synchroniser - all things I've done for years with no problem. However, whilst the single track played fine, the album would not play. Each track title came up on the display with a running time of 00.00, and then it went to the next track, and so on. I have compared the album files with the single track, and they are identical in properties, and no encryption shows up. I phoned Amazon, who were very helpful, but after about 30 mins I had to agree with them that the problem must lie with the iRiver and not the tracks themselves (which play fine on the PC when I attach the iRiver as a device). I've scoured forums but have yet to find a similar case described, and no other files are affected. Your humble servant, Gaffer This communication is for informational purposes only. I have an iRiver MP3 player which is 7 years old, and the hard disk still has about 25% free space... That one sounds like an audio codec issue - your PC has probably got much more modern codecs on it that will allow it to play the files, but your iRiver may not have. If you have any software that allows you to convert audio and save it as plain old, non-variable bit-rate MP3 files, then try simply converting them and saving them to the iRiver again.
