So with a win tomorrow Bournemouth would get to the play off final. I also notice that Bournemouth finished a full 16 points behind Huddersfield in the league. Personally, I don't like the play-offs. I think the league is a league, and success should be judged over the full course of the season, not in three games. I think it's an injustice that a team finishing 16 points behind another could get promoted in place of the higher finishing team. I understand that neutrals enjoy the games, and it brings money in to clubs, and widens the possibilities for the top 10/12 clubs toward the end of the season rather than the top five or six, but I still don't like them. Re: [LU] What do people think of the play-offs?
The playoffs are COMPLETELY unfair, because the team that has performed the best over the course of the season (out of the third through sixth places) is not guaranteed promotion. (In the old days, the third best team always got promoted. The playoffs were introduced for financial reasons, basically.) Just because there's a rule, it doesn't mean that rule is fair. Re: [LU] What do people think of the play-offs?
It's an americanisation of our national sport and, as such I am against them on that principle. However, everyone knows them's the rules at the start of the season and they do add extra spice to the tail end of the season, keeping interest for teams who would otherwise be playing a number of meaningless games every year which would see a drop in revenue. On this years showing, I don't think we would have beaten Swansea over two legs i'm afraid. :-( On 17 May 2011, at 13:34, tim.whe...@talk21.com wrote: Last season when we were desperately trying to cling on to automatic promotion and in danger of finishing third, I thought they were a monstrous injustice. Re: [LU] What do people think of the play-offs?
I think the current promotion/relegation setup is very good. However, any expansion of the playoffs beyond the current number would adversely dilute the league season. I also like that the relegated teams don't get some sort of playoff lifeline at the end of their crappy/failed league season. You're in the bottom three you're down. Another emotional benefit is the league playoff system allows the supporters of many teams a chance to experience a Wembley final day out, because let's be honest most of these lower league teams never did and never will make the FA or League Cup finals. As an attempt at extending the worth of games at the end of the season they seem to work, though I think they could be improved to make finishing third more of an advantage than it currently is. You can make things too complicated there and there are some godawful play-off systems around... consider the Belgian top division: A play-off phase is then played from March to May. The top 6 teams from the regular season enter the play-offs 1, with each team playing their opponents twice. The point system in the play-offs 1 is the same as during the regular season, except that each team starts with half of the points they won in the regular season. Points are rounded up to the nearest integer. At the end of the play-offs 1, the first-placed team becomes the champion of Belgium. If some teams are level in the ranking, any points added due to rounding are first withdrawn from their total points if applicable, before other criteria are taken into account. Teams ranked 7 to 14 after the regular season enter the play-offs 2, with teams ranked 7th, 9th, 12th and 14th entering the group A and teams ranked 8th, 10th, 11th and 13th entering the group B. In each group, each team plays each of its 3 opponents twice. The winner of each group plays the final game in two legs, to determine the winner of the play-offs 2. The winner of the play-offs 2 then plays a home and away game against either the fourth-placed or fifth-placed team from the play-offs 1 for the final Europa League ticket, with the opponent depending on the fact if the Belgian Cup winner ended in the top four of the play-off 1 or not. Team ranked 15th and 16th after the regular season enter the relegation play-off. It consists of 5 games between the 2 teams. The 15th-placed team starts the play-offs with 3 points whereas the 16th-placed team starts from zero. The loser of the relegation play-off is relegated to the second division. The winner of that play-off enters the Belgian Second Division Final Round http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_Second_Division_Final_Round with 3 teams from the second division. The winner of this Final Round plays in the First Division the season thereafter. - Si ___ Leedslist mailing list Info and options: http://mailman-new.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/leedslist To unsubscribe, email leedslist-unsubscr...@gn.apc.org MARCHING ON TOGETHER (There's it)
