Be aware! The link on the Home tab does not always update timeously. At
least, that is my experience. If it doesn't say that a new version is
available, click on the box title of Updates. That should give a 'Check
For Updates' box. Follow the instructions that it gives.

Re: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch

2010-03-16 Thread Ron Ferguson
Michael,

No, that is incorrect. Only yesterday Geoff, yet again, stated that the
increased functionality which Family Search will make available to the
general public, ie. non-LDS members, will be available in due course. That
is when Family Search are satisfied that it is properly debugged etc.. The
current phase should be regarded as a Beta test. At that time some, but not
the confidential LDS Members section, will be available in the Legacy
Program.

At the present time the facility is only of use to LDS members. And, know it
is not yet known when the general section will be availbale. Their IGI is
currently available through Legacy.

I'm not sure what you mean by this, but the link you posted
(Family Search Pilot, or sometimes called Family Search Labs)
involves actual records (e.g., indexes and digital images of
original records like Ohio Death Certificates and Argentina census
records, both of which I've had the need to use, believe it or not).
In other words, it is #5 on Heather Stovold's explanation earlier
today of the various FamilySearch collections. You do not have to
be an LDS member to use this site.

The only portion of FamilySearch one needs to be an LDS member to
use is NewFamilySearch (#4 on Heather's list). Legacy 7.4 has been
built to be compliant with NewFamilySearch (along with correcting
things that are important to all of us, not just LDS members).

That's what Millennia have been saying all along.

If Legacy is to be used by LDS members for Temple work, than it has to
be certified. You can't expect Millennia to wait until the LDS make the
new stuff public before they start this process, so the development has
gone hand in hand with the LDS beta testing of their new site.

Eventually - big word that one! - the LDS will make their
new-and-improved FamilySearch site available to everyone, at which time,
Legacy will work 'out of the box'.

I'm not a member of the LDS and I don't expect to make a lot of use of
their site, so the program changes don't really affect me.

Ok, I have a yes and a no. Once 7.5 comes out I assume it will be
certified for LDS work and it will be of great benefit for LDS users. I
can see how this will be of great use to LDS members but, will it do
anything for the rest of us? And is there any time estimate or is it
simply that it will happen when it happens? I am just curious.

Both answers are correct!! At present Mike is right, the function is only of
benefit for LDS members, but in future, when FS opens the general
database, included in Legacy is the facility allowing access to all Legacy

Thanks Ron. Always takes a few messages to learn the rules!

Here's another rule question -- I see most message subjects start with
[LegacyUG]. Is this manually entered by the sender, or automatically
put in by the mail list? I didn't see anything about it in the
ettiquette link.

Same question for the rules, etc. when posting a new message. Perhaps
its just the way Gmail shows it, but they came across in a seperate
message.

Thanks,

fine as only the latest files will be installed. Neither method will affect
your data, *but* in common with updates of any program do ensure your
back-up is up to date - just in case!

By the way, As a new user you are probably not aware that all posts should

using this site should be deleted when replying to posts. These rules are
intended in part to keep the size down for the many users who are on metered

I see some discussion about 7.4.0.19.  When I check my version, I'm on
7.4.0.6.  How do I upgrade?  I could not find a Check for Updates option

 Thanks in advance...

[LegacyUG] Descendant Book

2010-03-16 Thread Lloyd Hite
I see where the Option, (Show line back to starting person) when
making a Descendant Book,
(Modified Register) bug has not been fixed. In the last version, it
would not show or print and I posted a message to LUG about it.
Someone replied that it was a known bug and would be fixed in this version.
Does anyone know when we can get a fix? I used to print a lot of
Books, but since this bug showed up in the last version I could not
print any because I need to show the line back to my starting person
in order for people to know where they are in the book.

PS. Is there anyway I can download the version prior to 7.0.6, and
restore a data backup from

I see where the Option, (Show line back to starting person) when making a
 Descendant Book,
(Modified Register)  bug has not been fixed. In the last version, it would
not show or print and I  posted a message to LUG about it. Someone replied
that it was a known bug and would be fixed in this version.
Does anyone know when we can get a fix? I used to print a lot of Books, but
since this bug showed up in the last version I could not print any because I
need to show the line back to my starting person in order for people to know
where they are in the book.

PS. Is there anyway I can download the version prior to 7.0.6, and restore a
 data backup from
 version  7.0.6?

Eventually, I Reset (for the second time) and left *everything* at its

Index, TOC and Title Page - no problems. Then I deselected Print Source
citations and that's when the rot set in.

With Source Citations selected I get a line back to starting person.
With no Sources I get no line back.

That's not how it's supposed to work, is it? Can other LUGgers confirm

[LegacyUG] Foreign language version question

2010-03-16 Thread John Roose
If someone sends me a Legacy database developed in, for example, a German or
Finnish version of Legacy, can I open it [successfiully :) ] in an English
[American English] version of Legacy? And vice-versa? My foreign language
skills are nil!

All tips and suggestions welcome. Via DNA I have found a new cousin and
we're trying to connect.

Yes, I can open the English sample file in my Dutch version of Legacy,
but of course the notes and some other items (i.e. non standard

Lloyd,

It does *not* work in 7.4.0.16, and it never will, so there is no point in
trying it. As far as I am concerned it works in 7.4.0.21, although I am aware
of Jenny's problems.

If it is taking 4hrs it sounds as though you are doing a full download. If you
use the Update facility under the Legacy Home Tab (on your program) it should
only download and install the bits you need.

 Sherry/Support wrote
Do you have the latest build 7.4.0.21? That issue shows fixed in the
 previous build.

Yes. Having updated to .21 and still getting no line back I
re-started Legacy: still no line back. Read your post about
resetting, reset and then selected my preferred range of options
(which did not include Sources): still no line back. Reset again
and made NO changes to Legacy's complete set of default options:
line back. Then deselected TOC, Index and Title page: line back.
Then deselected Print Source citations: no line back.

I then tried switching on and off Source Citations several times
(making no other changes) and every time the line back appeared only
 when Source Citations were printed.

I just tried it again now. I selected the Descendant Modified
Register Report and used the Reset button. Then deselected TOC,
Index and Title page and deselected Print Source citations. There
was no line back printed. I then selected Print Source citations and
 the line back was printed.

Note that I have made NO changes to any of the default settings other
than the 4 I have specifically mentioned - TOC, Index, Title Page and
 Sources.

Jenny,

I really need more time to look at this. Reset, and simply ran the report,
modified register, Sources as Endnotes, and not Sources, did not touch the
Index settings. With Sources selected all seemed well, but when Soucres
unselected, the line was there but it was rubbish, comprising a mixture of
descendants and the odd ancestor. It really needs a good looking at.

I agree that it does not seem to be correct when no Sources, but exactly how
I cannot tell without a lot of work. Sherry, I see that you are following
this thread, can you have a look at yours please?

Yes it does. Click on sources, citations only and it will print the upline.

As for downloading from the update facility, I tried it a couple of
versions back and it would only download up to 8% and then would not
go any further, no matter how long I waited for it to continue.

Re: [LegacyUG] FamilySearch

2010-03-16 Thread Rick Merrill
So if you are not an LDS member then all this new FamilySearch
functionality that is now in Legacy is useless? This new stuff is for
 LDS only?

Yes, that is true for right now. The new stuff with Legacy FamilySearch is
only useful to the members of the LDS Church. They need this feature to
interact with the new FamilySearch data base that is currently only
available to members of the church. If Legacy does not provide this
interface the those customers will be have to leave Legacy for another
genealogical software that does.

But there are many great resources available to everyone right now.

Such as the regular FamilySearch site http://www.familysearch.org that give
you access to many great records and even online tutorials on how to do
research around the word.

Or the http://labs.familysearch.org/ website where you can find access to
the images and indexes that are being done by volunteers around the world.
The LDS church has over 24 million rolls of microfilm with information from
around the world. You can look up in the catalogue and have your local
Family History Library order them for you at a minimal charge. They are
currently digitizing all of these rolls of file and then indexing them at a
rate of around 1 million names a day. This is then being put online for
free though this website.

IN THE FUTURE the new FamilySearch website will be open to everyone. At
which time you will be able to access it through the Legacy FamilySearch.

SO WHAT YOU ASK. On Ancestry or Roots web and other site you upload you
family tree for other so see. So does you brother, your Great Aunt, and
your Cousin twice removed. And a lot of the data is identical and some of
the work may be your own research repeated a few times. But yet they are
STILL SEPARATE FAMILY TREES. What the new FamilySearch is doing is merging
all the trees and information that it has into ONE FAMILY TREE with all
those people linked together. This is a collaborative effort. So if
someone has something different you can contact each other and get the real
facts correct. When it is finished I think you will find it a great asset
to your own research.

But currently there are a few difficulties. One it currently takes some 650
serves to run the website. Some 350 just to do the searching. The backup
takes some 21 Tera Bits of hard drive. And you thought your data base was
large. The family tree currently contains some 1.4 BILLION names. That
will be helpful in anyone's research. Another problem. Currently there is
only a place for notes. No Sourcing. But I am sure it will be available
someday and maybe even linking images such as census images or the SSDI.
But that really will take a lot of computing power.

So for EVERONE there is something usefull from the regular FamilySearch and
in the FUTURE more great stuff in the new FamilySearch.

Rick Merrill

8% is where the downloading actually starts! Before that, the process
has checked a few items and concluded that they are up to date. It then
goes on to the program itself.

NOTE: The percentage complete indication ONLY UPDATES WHEN A FILE HAS
BEEN SUCCESSFULLY DOWNLOADED. Thus, when Legacy.exe completes, the 8%
will jump to 46%.

A few other items will be checked giving instantaneous gratification
that more has been done. Then we start on the help file, Legacy.chm.
Again, it will appear to stall. But it doesn't.
