would that mean that I would enter my name as the person that received the

Nita,

Yes and Yes. But, I have a Source Writer Email Master Source with myself as
the recipient, and use this for all my emails ie. I'm a lumper. So, only one
Master source and the sender and contents are in the Detail.

2011-12-01 Thread Brian/Support
There is the lineage chart report, that starts at one person and shows
only the male ancestors. There is no narrative style report that is
equivalent though and the lineage report includes very little detail on
those male ancestors (only the birth and death years).

You could export the line to another Legacy file and then run one of the

Re: [LegacyUG] Source template conversion tool

2011-12-01 Thread Robert E. Carneal
*Yes, your name would be entered multiple times. Here's how I do it.
Suppose I read a letter received by my Aunt Kathy from her sister. The
letter details facts about Cousin Joe Blow, facts I want. Here's what I do:
1 Offer to xerox at my expense the letter so I have a copy to refer to
from time to time as needed. I would keep the letter on file, and maybe
even scan the letter on my computer for faster access.
-or-
2 failing that, I try to get permission to photo the letter. At home, I
print it and put it in a file. I might even save the photo on computer for
faster access.
-or-
3 Still failing that, I will set down and write down every fact I possibly
can. Names, events, dates, who the letter was from, who it was to.

Now, even if I have a copy of it in the first two examples, who received
the letter? Aunt Kathy. Who has the letter? Aunt Kathy. I only have a copy.
Aunt Kathy is the recipient. In the last example, Aunt Kathy is the
recipient. I just copied facts.

I have several family Bibles. I fight for permission to view them before
they are destroyed. Yes, a lot of people they go to decide the Bible is too
old, too loose, coming apart, too something. So they toss it. I would
list the name of the *current* owner of those Bibles as recipient, even he
may elect to destroy them.

True, your name will be on a lot of them. does this help?
*
*Thank you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Pedigree Index

2011-12-01 Thread Brian/Support
I have tested this and found that there is an intermittent problem when
the total generations in the report creates multi-page reports. The
first time you try to create such a report the Index may not be
generated. If you close the report selection and then restart the report
without making changes to your settings you may or may not get the
index. All I can suggest as a work-around is to keep trying the report.

I have submitted a problem report in our tracking system.

Re: [LegacyUG] Locations (addresses)

2011-12-01 Thread Paula Ryburn
I meant removing of just the city, state and zip.

Current:
Jane Doe was born 1 Jan 1900 in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan (St.
John's Hospital, Detroit, Michigan)

Preferred:
Jane Doe was born 1 Jan 1900 in Detroit, Wayne Co., Michigan (St. John's
Hospital).

(even if I have the full address of the hospital entered in the address table)

And I will take a look at using Events as you do, but that would seem to remove
it from the actual birth and death or burial dates and locations.

Thanks, --Paula

Too much redundancy. So, now I have a mix of hospital (or cemetery) some

[LegacyUG] Error 75: Path/File access error.........AND ERROR 3204

2011-12-01 Thread Jill Glover
Hi everyone,
I have had a computer crash in the last week, a Trojan I believe, and now
have trouble with Legacy. I have windows XP.These are my problems:-

(1) : When I try to open Legacy 7.5 from the start menu, this is the message
I get :
Error 75: Path/File access error

Legacy help tells me this re error 75:-
Either log on as the Administrator, or go to the Control Panel and open
User Accounts and give the other account(s) Computer Administrator
privileges.
I have done this, and I see that I am already the Administrator.

When I try to uninstall Legacy 7.5 I get this message :
Could not open INSTALL.LOG file

When I try to open a fdb file, this is the message I get :
Error 3204: Database already exists.

I'd really appreciate some help with this please?
I have Legacy Deluxe.

Many thanks,
Jill

RE: [LegacyUG] Cemeteries, Hospitals in Event Fields - Was: Locations

2011-12-01 Thread Mary Fowler Leek
Tony,

First, I don't think the information in the vitals notes prints anywhere.

If you put the burial notes in an Event note, you can have it placed exactly
where you want it to read in the narrative reports. The individual events can
be moved up and down in the 'List of Events', depending on what information you
have for the person. A simple example below shows two events that follow the
block of vitals in a Legacy Descendant Book report for Ada. If I wanted to have
the burial note read below the obituary, I'd just highlight it and move it
under the Obituary event in the 'List of Events'. As you can see, for the
burial location, I add the Cemetery Name in (...) following the city. This way,
I can search and create a list of burials in each cemetery and they also sort
well in the location list. I don't enter anything in the 'general notes' or any
of the vitals notes. I created an event called 'Notes' instead so I can arrange
my narrative to read the way I want. You can't tell by this example, but I can
attach a photo of Ada's headstone to the first note following the block of
vitals and the photo will be included in the report. Another bonus is each
Notes Event can be sourced. The cemetery address, phone number, directions,
etc. I add to the location notes for each cemetery and it prints in the
Locations Index. My goal is to try to produce interesting Narrative reports for
my family. If you haven't gotten too far along with your data input, try a few
different things, with an eye toward what is important to you. Legacy is very
flexible. My suggestion would be to try and settle on your style of data input
and then be consistent.

Ada is buried next to her husband and each have separate headstones. Their
daughter, Allie, who died young, is buried nearby. this
information was entered with a Notes Event

Doesn't that make reports a bit strange? You would get the vital
statistics bit (including he was buried in and the name of the town),
then all the life events and finally the cemetery event. Wouldn't it
read more smoothly if you included the cemetery details in the burial
location, so that it was included in the in the front of the report?

I've always included all burial details (including plot and row numbers
and cemetery name) in the burial location and the report has all
relevant data together. I'm still able to include pictures and notes,
although I do have to cut and paste notes about the actual cemetery into
each individual location.

Just a thought

Tony

Re: [LegacyUG] Pedigree Index

2011-12-01 Thread Jill King
I have restarted the report 6 times and have not been able to bring up the
index (with just 9 generations).  I guess I will wait until the bug gets
fixed.  Thanks for the info.  I now know it is not me.

I''m not sure what 're-set' is. I have gone into the relationships window and
looked and it is set to 999. I opened the relationship calculator with the 6th
great selected and clicked 'calculate relationships' and it still didn't
change...I know I'm missing something simple.Sorry if I'm being dense but
if I could get a little more specific details on how to reset? Thanks, Kathy

Have you re-set the relationship calculator since adding the new people (i.e.
parents of 5th great grandfather)? You have to reset after entering new
people. I wouldn’t do it after entering each individual – I’d enter a few and
then recalculate if you need the relationship to help you enter more new people
etc. Otherwise, reset after you have finished entering new people for that
session.

Subject: [LegacyUG] relationship indicators

I have the relationship indicator turned on so it shows right above their name.
Love that feature by the way :-)

I have a 5th great grandfather/grandmother that shows up and the name is
'bolded' to show the direct line (another cool feature).

For some reason, when I entered the parents for the 5th great grandfather, I
don't get my relationship indicator anymore - it doesn't 'bold' him in the list
with his siblings and it doesn't show 6th great grandfather/mother over his
parents' names. I thought maybe the program only showed up to 5 and thought
that was rather stingy of them (haha!) but decided to look at some other lines
and I have another that at least shows to 7th great so that's not the answer.

What might I have done here? I've gotten quite used to having those two
'direct line' features to help me navigate my file and I'm entering multiple
generations beyond this one so I figure I'd better get this fixed now.

Thank you! Kathy
