[LegacyUG] How to search middle name in index?
Is there a way to search for a middle name in the index? Some folks go by their middle name and when I don't rem their 'unused' first name I have to search through the surname. Just a nuisance with the relatively small tree I'm working on now, but will be a bigger problem when I start working on my families. Didn't see it addressed in archives since 09. But I have Sources for the Relationships to Father and/or Mother for about half the people in my database (so far!) and as nearly all of them are the niological children of both parents I have nothing selected from the Child-Parent Relationship list, but the fact of a Relationship, with Sources, is shown when I run Reports. The TYPE of Relationship is not shown, of course, except in the few instances where I have selected Biological, Adopted, or whatever. -- Jenny M Benson Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). Thanks Jenny, but in your example I can't search Mary in the index and get Jane Mary... I tried a * wildcard, which did nothing. Re: [LegacyUG] How to search middle name in index?
Besides putting their most commonly known name in quotes in the GIVEN field, you should also put their known name in the AKA list. Then, in the name list (and/or in the Index), you can turn on include alternate names. This way the person will show up in your list twice (or three times, etc - depending on how many names they were known by). This option is easily turned on off for times when you want the shorter list or the complete list. In other words: * in the GIVEN field, you would have: Jane Mary Mary * In A.K.A., you would have: Jane Smith Jane Mary Smith Jane M. Smith Mary Smith Mary J. Smith (maybe??? - depends on what you find) Mary Jane Smith (again - maybe - depends on what you find) J. M. Smith etc Of course the A.K.A. can (and often should) include other nick-names or pet names if the person was actually known by these other names on any documents or even if they were known by the nick-name in general public (because, for example, they may be listed that way in a newspaper article). Brian, Thanks for the reply and please bare with me, I'm confused. In the individuals assigned source window under father rel: and Mother rel:, I have added the source,a birth certificate. Are you saying I should also, in the children's settings window select birth for Mother/Father relationship to have the parents names properly sourced or should I be working with the child status? Re: [LegacyUG] Missing Father,Mother Rel:. Sources
In the children's settings screen the birth relationship uses biological. If you are going to add a source for a biological parent-child relationship then you should also input data in the children's settings screen. If you do not input that biological relationship then reports will not report it nor will the source citation be included. The sources screen includes a list of possible places you can enter data but you should only use those where there is data entered. The source list includes such things as a sources for never married, had no children for a marriage for example but these should only be used if you have checked the appropriate box on the marriage information screen. The rel to father and rel to mother are similar, the sources entered on those should only be linked if you have actually entered a father/mother relationship. I would use a birth certificate as a source for the name and birth of the child. In the same way that a couple are considered married if no special status is entered on the marriage scree, the relationship of the child to the parents as biological is assumed. For myself I would only go through that process to document parent-child relationships for other than biological parents. Adopted children for example with adoption papers as the sources. For a second marriage where some children are step children of one parent I might use the second marriage documentation as a source but generally I do not source step relationships even though I will indicate the step relationship to the second spouse on the children setting screen when I link the child of a first marriage to a second marriage for report purposes. Some of you are purists when it comes to historical place names. To me getting the person's name right is the single most important item in genealogy. That is why I always try to use the actual birth name in the main name fields and utilize the aka fields for the nicknames, etc. Jerry in Michigan Robert57P_gmail robert...@gmail.com wrote: Besides putting their most commonly known name in quotes in the GIVEN field, you should also put their known name in the AKA list. I put the birth certificate as an event in the child's info, then clipboard it to the parent and change the event to name and description as from (name) birth certificate. Same with death obits if relationship is listed. if death or obit hasn't got a full name I still list it with name unknown or unlisted in the notes field. Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Update
I am not speaking for Millennia, but as a member of the beta test group, the program is looking pretty stable. We all hope that a very stable version is verified before a public release to reduce the problems caused by un-proven routines. The current beta release is 7.5.0.133 so you can see that progress is being made since the last public release of 7.5.0.112. Many good things are being debugged in the system so everyone is anxious to get their hands on it when it is ready for prime time. Kathy, Now I’m back, I am having a quick run through the posts, and I see that nobody has answered this one – is it now resolved? Everything was fine yesterday but today when I try to work with Legacy and click on the add source icon I end up with a totally blank screen. I have to control/alt/delete to close the program. I don’t know what I did to cause the problem, but this is the second time it has happened to me. The lst time it happened I ended up having to figure out what pictures I may have added to the sourcing I had done, removed all the pictures and then it worked. But I didn’t add any pictures that I know of this time to cause the problem. I ran file maintenance and that didn’t help, shut down the computer and re-opened it to see if that may be the problem. No joy so far – darn! Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem? Thanks. [LegacyUG] Re-attaching files/pictures etc in Legacy
Hi, It's been a number of years since I did any family history - and several computers ago!! I still have my legacy files and photos/ certificates etc, but can't get them to link up. The footprints for all the linked files are in the Legacy file, but all the photo's etc are coming up black with question marks. All my 'media' files are kept in my documents folder and not in the Legacy programme. Try as I might, I can't seem to get Legacy to read the locations. e.g. If I click on to bring up the 'Individual's Information' box, on the same line as the surname is the 'coloured picture frame'. If I click on it. the 'find file' box comes up. Out of the four options, I take 'Browse for the file yourself'. I find the file, click on, and it takes me back to the 'Browse for the file...' box, to find the next picture. I can go through this process until eventually it takes me to the 'Picture Gallery' for that person. All the boxes are greyed out with the titles/info. correctly displayed at the bottom. The 'find file' box continues to come up, and I am asked to link the pictures again, which I do. The photo's then appear. If I close the picture gallery and open it again, all pictures are replaced by black boxes with question marks. Any ideas? Re: [LegacyUG] Quarter Dates
Christine, From what I can see nobody has mentioned the method which I use, and that is to exclusively reserve ‘cir’ for quarter dates, and use it in conjunction with the last month of each quarter thus “cir Mar 1880”. This works, of course, with all GEDCOMS and the recipient software. I started using this system before Legacy introduced the abbreviation ‘Q’, which, because of its non-standard nature, I don’t particularly like. For other approximate dates I use ‘Abt.’ Ron Ferguson http://www.fergys.co.uk/ From: gen_quest Sent: Friday, December 30, 2011 2:47 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Quarter Dates Apologies, I should have thanked both Colin and Tony. Tony's way requires a little more work but a registration is after all an event so it seems to make more sense to me than putting the quarter date into the date field. Christine I use a registration event and put something like Sep 1841 in the date field. The full sentence reads: [HisHer] birth was registered during the quarter ended [Date] at the [~Place], with GRO reference [Desc] [Notes].[Sources] I put something like vol 2b, page 234 in the Desc field and only use the notes for clarifying any uncertainties. I have special locations xx Registration District only used for registrations so I can separate people registered in Sheffield Registration District from people born in Sheffield, for example. In the birth field I just insert a date equal to the registration year, unless the registration was in the first quarter, when I use Abt . I have asked Legacy for a change to the Sentence definitions so we could use: [DateQuarter] which would take a date in the form Dec 1854 and expand to the December Quarter 1854 [~DateQuarter] which would expand the date to the Dec Quarter 1854 [DateQ] which would expand the date to 4Q 1854 However, I'm not holding my breath. David, Assuming that all your images, no matter how many containing folders you have, have unique file names then the method which you describe will find all the Legacy images in the folder to which you have directed it. You will need to repeat this, once, for all folders. However if the file names are not unique then you will have to do it for each image, otherwise you images will be wrongly linked. OK, I do not like the Picture Centre, so really do not know much about it's workings, but will take a look. Firstly, a probably useless basic question, the images are where you think they are aren't they; I guess so because you say you search for them? However, I would appreciate some clarification of I find the file, click on, and it takes me back to the 'Browse for the file...' box, to find the next picture. When you find the image and click on it, you then need to click 'Open' to get it into Legacy; I am not certain from what you are saying that you are taking this step. Hi Ron, Thanks for your help, but I've solved it!At some stage the jpg's in my Family History Folders have all somehow been turned to 'hidden' and I had 'display hidden folders' turned on. On my laptop there is very little difference in the way hidden and non-hidden files are displayed - the hidden are only very slightly lighter, so I didn't notice. Of course, Legacy was not picking up the hidden files within the programme, although the file names were still visible. I have now altered the settings and all is well. Thanks, once more. Re: [LegacyUG] best format for photo files?
I scan pics to TIF with good resolution for archiving purposes. Before I link them to Legacy, I resize them with a lower resolution JPG format and save them to the c:\Legacy\Pictures folder . For most uses 200-300 dpi is plenty. If you're planning on doing wall charts you might want to consider using the TIF file for the picture you'll be using in the chart. There's an extensive article on our website at www.LegacyFamilyTree.com Help Center Tips Pictures, Sound and Video: Multimedia Files. The article includes informaton on scanning. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy Update
I have responded to that issue before. It would be unlikely that a new version (probably v8) would or could be released until the current version is at least stabilized with the tool set it already has in it. Millennia would not jump ship at this point, leaving v7 in an unfinished state. The obvious continuation of development on v7 is evidence that all efforts are concentrated on getting it clean before focusing on a new major release. Someone at Millennia chime in if my comments need modification. As a programmer, I truly appreciate companies like Millennia who only release product after it has been extensively tested and debugged.
