Please state clearly with your questions what version of Legacy you are using like 8.0.0.397 and also what version of Windows like Windows 7 64bit. That will help the user group to replicate your problem. And the issue may just be that your configuration needs to be updated. To add to Michele's comment If you leave any unknown information blank, you can take advantage of the Search tab Missing Information and show underlines for missing information in Ancestor and Descendant books. Also, if you share FGR or other reports with other family members, if the field is blank it quickly catches their eye and they have a place to help update the information you're missing. If anything is entered in a field, it won't be found as Missing in the Missing Information search. Legacy is looking for an empty field. When you see the problem again, immediately send a message to supp...@legacyfamilytree.com and attach a copy of the Desc.usr file from your _AppData\Usr folder. This will let us see if anything weird has happened to the .usr file which controls that Descendant Chart report. RE: [LegacyUG] Question about importing GEDCOMs
When importing a GEDCOM, the data is imported in the format supplied by the GEDCOM. To change the data after importing, you have to use the “Apply” buttons on customize options 3.1 - 3.3 and 3.6 – 3.7. But you need to be cautious when using these because you might change something you don’t want changed (eg McCoy - Mccoy). Best to import a GEDCOM into a new Legacy data file, do the reformatting and other cleanups there, and then import the cleaned-up Legacy file into your main Legacy file. Re: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People
One thing I did not see mentioned is that in the Name list of people in your data, you can select the option to use the husband's surname as a second entry for the wife. Then you can find the wife with her married name. I keep that option set most of the time. I remember many people by their given name but not by their surname or married name, so I use the given name fairly often to find people in my data. Having the married name for wives is a big help. I do not see any need to have Jane Doe as an AKA. Jay On 2/24/2014 6:05 AM, Michele/Support wrote: Susan, I simply leave the surname blank. RE: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People
Susan, I don’t know what might be considered the correct way but my personal preference is to use (_) for an unknown name. I enter everything based on the way it reads in the narrative descendant report and I like to have the reader see immediately where a name is unknown. Sometimes I get unexpected help because their eye is drawn to the ‘hole’ in the report. [LegacyUG] arrow key
I am using the latest build with Window 7 64 bit. When I click on the Index tab the curser is in the Surname box. I start typing a last name and then use the down arrow to start to scroll and the curser jumps to the Given name box. Once this has happened one time, I can then put the curser back in the Surname box and type any number of letters and use the down arrow to scroll. When I get out of the Index tap and come back the same thing happens. Is this the way it is supposed to be? I think there are a few users on this list who have one name studies who can hopefully address your questions. If these people in your file aren’t linked, I don’t know what options you have for reports other than an individual report or a customized report based on the Index. Have you checked the Options under the Index tab to see if you can include the information you require for your report. For an Event, click on the Event, which will open a sub menu where you can select an individual event to be shown in a column. It might be helpful if you could tell us what types of information you feel you’d want to see in your reports. Re: [LegacyUG] Using Dropbox with Legacy8
Thanks so much for the helpful comments as a result I have decided that I will use Dropbox with Legacy. I installed Dropbox a year or so ago, but thanks Kathy, for your kind offer!! Pat On Sun, Feb 23, 2014 at 2:44 PM, Kathy Meyer kmeyer2...@gmail.com wrote: Yes, Pat, I love it. And I can even share it with someone else through the Dropbox 'share' option (when they work on it, it doesn't change my database though - they would have to access MY dropbox for it to sync like that) It saved my bacon once when my data files got deleted by accident. I can work on my Legacy file easily from my laptop or desktop or if I go to the library and it syncs up perfectly. The only thing you can't do is work from two places simultaneously. So if you use it to work on it with a relative, for instance, you have to make sure you are not using it at the same time or you will cause problems. This has been discussed in the past, however, new members join us all the time and sometimes we just don't see posts or aren't interested in certain topics until we get further into the process. I certainly don't mind 'old topics' being posted; sometimes there are changes that have occurred since the last discussion and we always want to be helpful to anyone who posts a query. If anyone does wish to look at old posts on this or other topics, you can search the archives. Sometimes that can be a challenge to find what you want too, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from posting a query here either way. Every query helps not only that person, but others who had not asked the question yet. That is what this group is for. Pat, if you would like me to send you a dropbox invitation, email me privately kmeyer2...@gmail.com; it will get you a little extra space there as will I. I keep ALL of my family history related items on there, documents, pics, etc. as well as a number of other things. Re: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People
Sherry, I have to disagree with you. Over the last 20 years I have sent out over 5000 letters to families, friends and potential relatives asking for information and usually including some sort of report. A field that is blank rarely prompts' a reader to respond, whereas a field with EITHER Missing or Unknown will trigger the reader to think Oh, I have that info they don't have. And the same for dates, If you have the date of birth is 1901, they continue reading. If they read the date of birth is Abt. 1901, they think, I know that EXACT date they don't have, and that thought process by the reader will elicit more responses. So in my database any unknown given name or surname is listed as unknown. And every incomplete date is prefaced by either abt., aft., bef., bet., or cir. Which also works great with Legacy's date sorting 'logic' which is better than most other software. At least that is my experience. But I recommend whatever the particular user feels best for them, is the best way to do it. Jay On Mon, Feb 24, 2014 at 5:56 AM, Sherry/Support she...@legacyfamilytree.com wrote: To add to Michele's comment If you leave any unknown information blank, you can take advantage of the Search tab Missing Information and show underlines for missing information in Ancestor and Descendant books. Also, if you share FGR or other reports with other family members, if the field is blank it quickly catches their eye and they have a place to help update the information you're missing. If anything is entered in a field, it won't be found as Missing in the Missing Information search. Legacy is looking for an empty field. RE: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People
I agree with Jay, I like to have something there to tell others that it is missing. I use some of the following, this also gives me a list within the Index that I have unknown names: Jane ? (Wife of Peter Jones) Ann? (Mother of Peter Jones) ? Smith (Husband of Ann Lyons) ? Smith (Father of William Smith) Yes this does not look so nice in any report, but like Jay say, it is an eye catcher and brings in information. Re: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People
This is my approach. In the absence of a name Legacy sometimes adds a non-person called “Unknownâ€. To distinguish from this, I usually put “not known“ in lower case in the given name field. · a second marriage but you don’t know who the first spouse was - put “not known†(all lower case) as a given name · people known to be siblings but don’t know either of the parents - put surname (same as siblings) for father only, put mother as not known or leave her blank · mother and children but don’t know the father - put “not known†as father’s given name (not surname) so as not to compromise the children’s usual surname · father and children but no mother – either leave mother blank or put “not known†as her given name. These people are not “unknown†– it’s just that at this time I do not yet know their names. I realise this hides some of the searches for missing information but you can find these not known people and the parts of the family that you already know from a Given Name sort of the Name List. Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging options
Assuming you're using Legacy v8 here, since you don't say... Do you have option 1.5 (Tagging options) turned on? Have you read the help tagging? As far as I can see, the only influence tags will have on any web pages generated by Legacy is if you choose to include people or marriages with a chosen tag number. You may like to experiment with this to see if any tags you have set on an individual appear in their web page. Hope this helps. :-) Kind Regards, Wendy rfalz...@yahoo.com said the following on 25/02/2014 7:10 a.m.: I really never explored tagging till the other day. Can anyone here advise me is there any special settings I should use when turning on tagging features? Also, when tagging is on will it be noticeable on the pedigree report when I build my website? Thanks Brian. I'm using Build 397, Windows 7 64 bit, and I have run Check/Repair and anything else I can think of, except to try the Reset tab on this chart which may have resolved the issue. [LegacyUG] Single Surname Study II
Mary, Ron, Thanks for the quick reply. I'm new to this software and don't fully understand the best way to do things yet. In Legacy Deluxe 8.0, I tag unrelated individuals and then create a search for that tag in the Name List. I'm currently experimenting with adding fields to the 2nd and 3rd lines of List Report Options to get a format I like. I think this will give me enough information - Names, birth, death, etc. - to be able to screen for new individuals or relationships while away from my computer in a library. Since Legacy is a computer (as opposed to server based, I haven't tried DropBox yet) based program, I'd like to have printed material to refer to on trips to libraries to aid in research. I will look at the Event reports also. Is there a way to print multiple Individual Reports at once, using tags? Thanks, Ted -- Hello, I'm using Legacy Deluxe 8.0. Is there a best practice to organize dozens to hundreds of unrelated individuals as part of a single surname study? I'm guessing advanced tagging? Can I get decent reports? What you're describing is the behaviour in version 7.5 In 8.0 the down arrow behaves like the Tab key. I would consider this to be a bug. -- Regards, Mike Fry Johannesburg (g) Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages after Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyusers.com/ Archived messages from old mail server - before Nov. 21 2009: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp Follow Legacy on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/LegacyFamilyTree) and on our blog (http://news.LegacyFamilyTree.com). RE: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People
Thank you to all the marvellous people who have offered assistance in entering unknown names. I think that at this stage I will try David’s method. Susan Thanks David, And I agree with you REMEMBER that there is NO right or wrong way, just what one prefers to do and WORKs for them. Re: [LegacyUG] Single Surname Study II
Ted, Forgive me but I am not going to go into the use of Dropbox – nothing wrong with ii, I use it myself – but nothing to do with your surname question. Legacy has a very strong search and find facility, and I would like to start by suggesting that you have a good read of the Help pages on this subject. Go to SearchFind and click on Help. The easiest thing for me to do is to give you but one example (out of the many, many). Let us suppose that you are researching the surname BUXTON and you think that the surname may have originated in the town of Buxton, Derbyshire, England (i haven’t a clue if it does btw.). From your files you wish to find those who were born in Buxton. Go to SearchFindDetailed Search. In he first row you are looking for an individual, surname, equal to Buxton then on the 2nd row, AND Individual, birth place, contains, Buxton. Ensure that the radio button “Clear list is checked” then click “create”. This is the Name List which you looked at before, and if you wish you could just print it off. But let us suppose you do not wish to do that at the moment, then you can go to OptionsAdvanced TaggingSearch List and tag the list with a convenient tag for future use. Next time just use SearchFindDetailed Search and search for Individual, Tag x, Equal to, set. I hope that you will find this example useful as an illustration as to how various options and screens can be used to work together. My laptop has not been able to access the internet for a while. It's version is 8.0.0.367, build date Dec 20. I added the .pdf file on it, and it opens as it should!! I'm using 7.5 I didn't want to switch to 8 because it seems to me people have been complaining about bugs within it. So I will wait till all the bugs are straightened out. RE: [LegacyUG] Single Surname Study II
I have NOT done a Single Surname file, but I am doing a Single Location file. It is putting families to those buried in a small old mining cemetery in Newcastle, Washington. One just needs to look and check out when adding some one new, that they are not already there as they are a relative to someone already entered. First started out I had mainly single person “Islands” in the tree. But as I added they were starting to connect through marriages and etc. Thanks, David C Abernathy Email disclaimers This message represents the official view of the voices in my head. http://www.SchmeckAbernathy.com http://www.SchmeckAbernathy.com == All outgoing and incoming mail is scanned by F-Prot Antivirus == From: Poppke Genealogy [mailto:ad...@poppkegenealogy.com] Sent: Monday, February 24, 2014 2:12 PM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Single Surname Study II Mary, Ron, Thanks for the quick reply. Re: [LegacyUG] Tagging options
If you are looking for a bug-free program you may as well shut down your computer. After all it is running one of the buggiest programs ever written - Windows. Why do you think Microsoft have to issue updates on a monthly basis. No reasonably complex program will ever be totally bug free. I do agree that if you do not see any significant benefits from the new Legacy 8 that you have grounds for not upgrading. You will have to accept that there will be no more bug fixes or improvements to 7.5.
