[LegacyUG] Index View row height

2014-04-03 Thread Michel Lacoursiere
The Index view in Legacy 8 still has the zoom option! It is invoked in
exactly the same way as in 7.5. Click Options and select Zoom.
Brian

That's a De Luxe feature :-)
Mike Fry

That explains it! Was just coming from setting the zoom options in Name and
Marriage list, it never crossed my mind that the same option for Views would
now be De Luxe only.

I do not know why you think Legacy is using the minimum font size on
pedigree view. My min font is the default 6 points and the font size on
my Pedigree is well above that.

Brian

I had set Font size to my usual Min. 8 Max. 10 and was seeing font size 8 in
pedigree. After trying Min.8 Max.8(no change), Min. 6 Max. 8 gave me font size
6 in pedigree. I stopped testing there, went back to my Min.8 Max.10 and
wrongfully conclude that pedigree was now using Min. Font size for Pedigree
View. My bad, I don't usually do poor testing job. After seeing your reply I
went back to test, did a thorough job this time, and now know that the Font
size we see in Pedigree View is not the Min. or Max. we set in Customize but
Max. Font size minus 2 (which make it a program bug to me and should be
reported as such).

[LegacyUG] Restoring picture links

2014-04-03 Thread M Sonnier
Mistakenly unattached all of my pictures.  Meant to unlink unreferenced Media
Folders.  Instead of clicking Proceed, I clicked on Unlink all media files.

I am using version 7.5.0.278.  Is there a way to restore the links from a
previous media backup.  I could restore everything, but that would overwrite
the data I have input over the last 3 hours.  I know I should have backed up
the file before this procedure, but that option is too late.

As you say, too late. You have to make a choice between two options

a) Lose your three hours of data entry and revert to a previous backup, or
b) Try and remember what was linked to what and relink everything manually.

Me. I think option a) is less onerous if you save your current file, sans linked
items, under another name and use it to try and recover your 3 hours of data
based on the records that you've changed today.

Re: [LegacyUG] Restoring picture links

2014-04-03 Thread Brian/Support
No. The file you are now working with has no links to the media in the
Family File
To restore the Family File with the links you will need to restore your
from the most recent backup made before you mistakenly clicked on the
remove all media links button.
Use Windows to find your most recent backup (Do you have Legacy add the
date and time to your backup file names?) Note the date and time in the
name or look at the file properties in Windows to see the date time for
the file.

1. In your current file Search Find Detailed Search tab
2. Look for Whom: Individual; Where to Look Modified Date; How to Look:
After; What to look for (Enter the date of the backup file)
3. Second Condition (And option on) Look for Whom: Individual; Where to
Look Modified Time; How to Look: After; What to look for (Enter the time
of the backup file (hh:mm))
4. Create List: The search results will be everyone you modified since
your last backup.
5. Close the search
6. File Export Export to a new Legacy File
7. Assign a file name like LatestChanges
8. Save
9. On the Export screen select the Focus Group option then click Edit
Focus Group
10. Clear List to empty any existing focus group
11. Add Current Search Results
12. OK
13. Set your privacy options to include all private data and make sure
options to suppress details are all off
14. Save
15. Start the Export
16. Do not assign an autosource
17. Open the file you just exported
18. Look at the records to see if they include the changes (they should)
Do not worry if the people are not connected into families. Only
families where data has changed will be included.
19. File Restore File
20 Select the most recent backup file
21. Open
22. For safety at this point I would restore your backup with a new name
so you do not overwrite your current file.
23. Open the restored file
24. File Import Legacy File
25. Select the file from step 7.
26. Add the Legacy Information to the Existing Family File
27. Proceed
28. Make sure Autobackup Family File is on
29. Continue with import
30. For safety change the starting RIN and MRIN numbers in Record
Numbering to numbers well above any existing numbers in your file
30. Start the import
31. Don't assign an autosource
32. Go to Merge
33. Continue
34. Use the special Duplicates search, Use Intellishare to Automerge
(since all the people you imported were changed no actual merges will
happen)
35. Continue
36. Examine the merges and you can merge the New higher numbered RINs
into their originals. The General tab of the merge screen will show you
the differences. For Events, Notes etc. you can use the special tabs to
copy info from the changed person to the older one to make sure any
differences are reconciled.

[LegacyUG] where to store images

2014-04-03 Thread Kathy Meyer
I need to reconnect a bunch of images; they were never saved in the Legacy
images file, always on my computer and I would just browse for the image in
question. Now with version 8 I've been getting a pop up asking if I want
to make a copy of that file to save in the Legacy images file (whatever
it's called-that may not be exactly the name of it but it's in the Legacy
program files I believe) It does give me the option so I can do it either
way, but since I have a lot of images to get attached, I want to make sure
I don't create future problems.

What I prefer to do is to keep my images where they are, in my dropbox,
where they are sorted so that I can locate what I want from any computer
anywhere.

Is there anything wrong with that? Is there a benefit to 'copying' the
image to the Legacy folder as well? Should I copy all of my images to the
Legacy folder?

I would love some input so I can get everything cleaned up properly.

Thanks, Kathy

I did try to follow your description of what you were doing but with
some errors in your terminology I was not able to confirm this as a
problem. I used the sample file that comes with Legacy so you can follow
 along with my steps

 Use Sample File
 Select Asa Clark Brown
Open him for edit which opens the individual edit form (page as you call it)
 select his birth in Woodstock
Use the down arrow to open the Master Location List (not the Geo database)
The GEO db opens with Woodstock selected since this location is in the
 Geo Database
*** There is no way to combine locations in the Geo Db though so this is
 where I lost you ***
I selected Woodstock from the Geo Db to return to the Master Location
List (this is where you can combine locations)
 I clicked the Combine button
I then selected Tionesta, PA and clicked the Combine With
(This combined Woodstock into Tionesta so Woodstock no longer existed in
 the Master Location List)
To follow your step of combining other locations I then selected West
 St. Paul MN
 Clicked Combine a second time
 Selected Winnebago Prairie MN
Clicked Combine With to remove West St. Paul
 Winnebago Prairie is highlighted
I then clicked close (If you click Select at this point you are
selecting the currently highlighted location so that will be the
location returned to the Individual Information form)
The Birth Location for Asa is now Tionesta PA (the location into which
Woodstock was combined) and not the location highlighted on the Master
 Location List (Winnebago Prairie).

IMHO anything as detailed as this, should be archived separately from the
regular user list archives. There is so much to wade through with that and
this is very concise. Even if it were using the format I've seen elsewhere
where each question has a 'best answer' that is linked to the original
inquiry. I wonder if the Legacy moderators save their answers like this
in a separate folder that is easily accessible to them? In any case, I
support your suggestion :-) Kathy

I will copy/paste the details of each page into my sourcing for the
individuals mentioned on each individual page the same way I do with a
census when it is showing multiple individuals.

I feel like I should be saving the entire document somewhere as well.
The original document gives a list of what is on each page and gives
some background about the archive and even some images of churches in
the areas of research and a map.  I wouldn't want to add these
individually to every single individual that I am adding into my file.
That seems excessive, although it would be nice to be able to access
these general items without having to remember which individual that
file is attached to.  I hope that makes sense.

I wish there was some 'general' area in Legacy that would allow us to
add this type of document and maybe tag the family 'line' that would be
 involved.

Reasoning is that I don't want to inflate my individual files
unnecessarily but also, if I add to that tree later, I won't remember
that I have a really nice image of the church in the area that the
person was born or that I have a map of that area.  And those things
would only be attached to the people I'm inputting now.

Does anyone have a work around for this? Or a suggestion about how you
would handle these type of more 'general' documents?

You could make the complete document a Master Source and attach the
file, then copy and paste the relevant passages to the Source Text field
in the Source Details whenever you cite this Source.

Re: [LegacyUG] Export to FDB - question on event sentences

2014-04-03 Thread Brian/Support
Were you exporting to a new legacy file? The first step in that is to
create a new blank database populated with all the standard events and
their sentences. The export from your file is then imported into that
empty database. If you have customized standard event sentences you will
be asked what to do with those custom constructs.

Now, could I copy my files in the same way they are in dropbox? Like in one

lot of work. Fingers crossed!

[LegacyUG] Maintaining spelling of Irish Surnames

2014-04-03 Thread Elaine Mahl O'Neill
I have a huge number of people in my file with Irish surnames like
O'Bryan, O'Neill, O'Burn, etc. Legacy, both 7.5 and 8 refuse to keep
the letter after the apostrophe capitalized. If there is a way to stop
it from changing what I put in I haven't found it. I have set the data
format preference to Don't change what I enter, and it has not
helped. The only other solution is to put the name in all caps, but
then I get the problem alerts, and there are just too darn many names
with this issue to go in individually and click on the Mark as not a
problem button. So, what I'm asking is there any secret, trick, or
solution to keep the names as they should be written with caps both
before and after the apostrophe? Thank you for any help you can give
me.

RE: [LegacyUG] Maintaining spelling of Irish Surnames

2014-04-03 Thread Bob Austen
Hi Elaine,

At some point the name was entered as O'bryan. Legacy 'stores' the names as
entered and then will 'autofill' as is does with addresses (for example). If
you have the name O'bryan you can change that by going to the Individual's
Information and, with that individual selected, click on the arrow beside the
surname. This will open the Master Surname List and you can edit the name to
read O'Bryan.

You can also go the View/Master Lists/Surname... and edit the names there.

I have always used the Detailed Search to find my entire direct line.  I have
loved this Legacy method as I keep only one file and can separate out any
family with ease.  Now, with some of the replies, I may be doing it
incorrectly???  Maybe I'll have to explore the results a little more closely.

My method:
Set your Direct Line
Go to Detailed Search (Check 'Clear List before this search')
    Primary Condition 1
        Look for whom?    Individual
        Where to look    Relationship
        How to Look        Equal to
        What to look for    Related
    Second Condition: Or
        Look for whom?    Individual
        Where to look    Relationship
        How to Look        Equal to
What to look for    Spouses and Inlaws

Then you can go to Options/Advanced Tagging and tag everyone in the Search List.

This should give you your entire family tree.

If you leave out the second condition you won't get the spouses and inlaws.
This does include my step children but not my wife's other husband.

This should work for anyone in your file where you have set the direct line.
If you want your wife's tree then use her as the starting person to Set
Preferred Line.

I would appreciate knowing if this was what you were looking for and how you
make out.

That still does not get all the children and grandchildren and cousins of each

those of my wife so I can give a copy of my family tree to my relatives.  This
really shouldn't be that difficult.

This is what the Advanced Tagging: Ancestors, Entire Ancestor Line promises.
Whether or not it works for you depends on whether you have links between
branches. I do have links so can't use it. eg a maternal cousin married a
distant relative of my father.  You can control it a bit by setting the number
of generations.

When I want all the ancestors of a person with all the offspring of each
ancestor, I identify the ancestor or ancestor couple at the end of lines of
their pedigree chart and then tag the descendants of each one or each couple on
the same tag (which of course I've made sure is
clear) To tag the descendants you use Advanced Tagging  - Descendants
- and make sure you choose Descendants and NOT Entire Descendant Line.

If you don't want the spouses who married into the line and enabled the next
generation of descendants, then I think you have to manually untag them.
This is most easily done in Descendant View. Customise the columns to show the
tag number you have used. You can double click in the Tag column to either set
or unset a tag.

You can get part of it quickly with features already in Legacy.
Highlight the person in Family tab for whom ancestry will be the focus.
Control T to start advanced tagging options.  Set the tag number to be
changed.  Clear that tag first if necessary.  Click Ancestors then
click Direct Line Ancestors and check the box under that to Include
Siblings.  You may also want to check Include Spouses of Siblings.
Set the Number of Generations to include as desired.  Then click OK
to set the tag number selected.  When tagging is finished, you will
have the direct line ancestry and all children linked to that tree with
the tag set.

If you really want the children of those children, you would have to
tag descendants of each of the direct line individuals to 3
generations.  A focus group might help with that process.

Once you get individuals tagged, then you can use that subset for
whatever purpose you had in mind.

Thank you!

[LegacyUG] need help with family view

2014-04-03 Thread Norma
Please Help!

Something strange has just happened to my file. In the family view in the
upper left corner of each person's details, where either husband or wife is
printed, suddenly all the females have a 0 and the males have husband.

In the case of a male child who died young never married, in the upper
left corner of his pane is the word wife and in the upper left corner of
the right hand pane is the word married.

In the case of a female child for whom I have only a birth date, in the
upper left corner of her pane is the word married in the upper left
corner of the left hand pane is the word wife

I am using Legacy 7.5.0.278 on a Windows 7 PC.

[LegacyUG] printing reports for adopted child

2014-04-03 Thread Pam Gosling
Hello,

I’m just venturing out into starting using reports and am trying to figure out
the best way to show an adoption. I couldn’t find a clear answer to my exact
question in the archives.

I have:

Female child Ottilie WM born to Carl GE and Caroline WS, adopted by Johann HM
and Wilhelmine MH.

I entered “adopted” for Ottilie under the child-parent relationship links to
Johann and Wilhelmine and “biological” under relationship link to Carl and
Caroline. Ottilie is listed as a child I believe under each set of parents when
I go to each parent’s family view. In the report options, I did check “show
child-parent relationships”.

On printing the Chronology report, for Johann HM, it looks like this:

(location), Ottilie WM (dates), (Father: Adopted) (Mother: Adopted) daughter of
Johann HM and Wilhelmina MH. . …

This sounds confusing to me, like the parents are the ones that are adopted; is
this the proper way to list it? Or is there a better way to arrange the
information? On the family group record,

It does list the same Father: Adopted, Mother: adopted on the same line as
Child-Par relationship. I’m assuming this is the intended way to use the
information but is there a better way to make it more clear to
understand?(probably answer to both reports the same).

And then, how do I show the biological parents on this report? I haven’t been
able to understand any discussion of how to show both sets of parents in an
easy way in a report.

I would prefer to send the report in the Chronology format but maybe it’s
better to use another type of report? If I do use the Family Group Record, is
there a way to add some information on the Child-Parent relationship field to
clarify the adoptive relationship? What do most people prefer to use in this
particular situation?

I’m sending this to a German relative that isn’t so good with English and want
it to be as clear as possible. I’ve read that some people list adoption as an
event, does that appear more clear in a report? Or should I just describe it in
the notes section? Or something else?

I welcome any suggestions as to what I’m missing or a better way to do this, or
what report might be best to run. . .thanks so much, Pam
