Re: [LegacyUG] Question re: Syncing people in two family files

2014-06-17 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Dan,

Repeating previous user comments. Put everything you want to save in one
file. Two files lead to a lot more work and confusion. I know, I tried it.

Legacy has many options for selecting just the ancestors or descendants
of a specific person. One of the most useful options is creating a
book of all the DEAD descendants of an ancestor, which can be shared
without a risk of identity theft it gets in the hands of the wrong person.

Do be sure you use the [[ ]] to make info private in notes, sources,
and events that should not be shared with the world.

And backup to an external hard drive and/or the cloud every time you
close the program or make changes or additions-at least daily.

You can put e-mail and other correspondence in the general notes or
sources or other locations so that years later you will still have the
info available, even if you lose your e-mail files.

Hi Bill,

Not sure of the reason but I cannot link to the internet and Ancestry.com

having just recently switched from Family Tree Maker. At the moment I’m
recovering from a failed hard drive with the new hard drive installed just
yesterday. Only trying to use Family Tree Maker until I can get my media files
scrubbed in Legacy as they did not transfer to Legacy so well.

So the bottom line is no I can’t get on Ancestry, not sure why, message in
Family Tree Maker says I’m not online (not true) or firewall blocking – maybe
so because I’m no computer expert by a long shot, but antivirus software does
show Family Tree Maker as being allowed. So I’m unsure why but everything I’ve
touched for the past few days, well you know how that is!

ancestry.com has been down since noon yesterday; I went to their FB page
just a minute ago. They don't say exactly what the problem is. A couple
of their sites are running but not Find a Grave and the main Ancestry.com
site.
I saw some posts on the FB page saying that it 'goes down all the time' but
I haven't had that experience, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of
the doubt. Not everything can be fixed quickly and apparently this is one
of those times.

ancestry.com has been down since noon yesterday; I went to their FB page just a
minute ago. They don't say exactly what the problem is. A couple of their
sites are running but not Find a Grave and the main Ancestry.com site.

I saw some posts on the FB page saying that it 'goes down all the time' but I
haven't had that experience, so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the
doubt. Not everything can be fixed quickly and apparently this is one of those
times.

recovering from a failed hard drive with the new hard drive installed just

scrubbed in Legacy as they did not transfer to Legacy so well.

Here is an interesting web site to visit when you think some other web server
is non-responsive:

IsItDownRightNow

http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/ (or the short-hand version http://iidrn.com)

Enter “findagrave” for the domain name.

This works great for a whole bunch of other popular sites that tend to work
like yo-yos.

2014-06-17 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
I worked for an hour or more on Ancestry.com, searching for census
records for a family for 1900, 1910, etc. I could find records and copy
text about an individual, but I was not able to connect to the image of
census sheets. This would cause a reset. Then I would have to go back
to the browser and get back into Ancestry. So after trying several
census years, I decided to quit Ancestry and try again tomorrow.

Re: [LegacyUG] email list too much- inbox overload

Hi Wendy,

I use the IMAP option and I think this is how it allows the folders to
be created in Gmail ( and appear in my online versions of Gmail) and
also synchronises both my desktop and laptop. Link with screen shot has
been sent directly to you - refer to left hand side of image to see
folders (or some thereof)

What I described below is talking about Gmail directly on the web, ie at
gmail.com or mail.google.com in a browser, not being read via a program
where the mail is downloaded to your computer.

My apologies for not making myself clearer.

I manage my emails using Mozilla Thunderbird and the folders that are

Gmail doesn't 'do' folders, it has labels.

I have a filter in my Gmail mail box that picks out list mail and
applies a label to it. After I posted in this same thread yesterday, I
spent a little time to update my web page at
 http://freepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wendyh65/How-to.htm#RuleFilter
to show how to set such a filter in Gmail, with pictures (screenshots)
to show where to look for things. This filter assumes you read your mail
at Gmail, you can tailor the options if these are not exactly to your needs.

Think about whether you want a filter to apply a label automatically as
the mail comes in, or not. Looking at the options (you can see them in
the screenshot at #7 for Gmail at my page above) it is possible to set
this criteria if you want - but I've never tried that, and you may not
 want all such emails labelled.

If it's something you want to do on-the-fly as you read your mail at
Gmail, it's very simple. If you've got the email open, look for the icon
near the top of the screen that looks a bit like a luggage tag - hover
over it and Labels appears as helpful text. Click on that, then select
the label you want to apply, or click on Create new and create a new
 label as you work.

If you don't already have the email open, but can see it in the list on
the screen, check the box to the left of it, then select the label to
apply (the luggage-tag icon will appear once you've checked one email).
You can set a label to several emails at the same time if you want -
just keep checking them before going to the Label icon.

Then when you want to go to just these labelled emails, click on the
label name down the left-hand side of your screen (I'm assuming you're
using a computer, not a tablet or phone, which will be arranged somewhat
differently, and may not have all the options available), and the emails
with that label will appear on your screen.

I have a few emails in my mail box, for a variety of things, that I want
to be able to locate quickly when I need them. Instead of using a label,
I 'star' them by clicking on the star that's next to the Reply icon when
the email is open. Or you can click on the star next to the email when
you're looking at the list. When I want to see the starred emails, I
click on Starred below Inbox at the top left of the screen, and there
they are. You may need to manage your labels to make this show if it's
not visible and you want to use it. It's essentially another label, with
a special position in the hierarchy.

Lastly, if you don't want to do any of this, the searching power at
Gmail is excellent. Click on the little down-arrow in the search field
at the top of the screen (next to the blue search icon) to bring up the
search options. You can search for mail that has an attachment, and
specify the size to look for (greater or less than a figure of your
choosing). Add that to other search terms, and it should take you
seconds to locate that one email amongst thousands.

 Hope this helps. :-)

I'm not sure what is going on. (I somewhat suspect the denial of services
story for a number of reasons despite what Ancestry put out but the sites
have definitely been down. The sites that have been down - or up and down -
include Ancestry, Rootsweb, Fold3, Genealogy.com, etc.

Earlier this afternoon Ancestry proudly proclaimed they were back up and
running - and then had to admit via twitter that they were not up and
running.

All you can do is keep trying. At some point I suspect someone will fix
whatever and they really will be up and running.
