Hi Ron,

That only happens if you don't check the Don't sort children/spouses/events if
there is one or more blank dates

Note that new additions can be kept in date order depending on your preferences

I cannot think off-hand of a way of converting the Y-DNA and Mt-DNA type
selections to at-DNA type. But if you want all those in your files who may
have the DNA patterns for which you are looking, then I think it would be
worth your while to have a look at the lines of multiple descent for the
ancestors of the individuals concerned, i.e. think about it the other way
round.

I'm not able to work through it myself at present, but if you hit problems
which you have difficulty in resolving, please email me off list and I'll
give it a go.

Thanks for taking the time to find that web page.

But the instructions are for Y-DNA (which is mostly male) or mt-DNA (which
is only female). I am looking for info for Autosomal DNA (which includes
everyone), so the instructions won't work for my situation. But I might be
able to alter them somehow to get the result I am looking for.

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Report - in Word, etc. ?

2015-03-06 Thread Wendy Howard
Hi Priscilla,

When you create web pages in Legacy, they are placed where you tell
Legacy where to put them - usually the hard drive of the computer you're
working on.

As others have said, they won't be online until you upload them to a site.

However, when you open any of the pages they will open in your web
browser - that's how they work. If you've got more than one browser
installed, they will open in the browser set as the default one unless
you specify for them to open in another.

When you've got a page from Legacy open in your browser, take a look at
the address bar - that will tell you where the page resides. If it is on
your computer, the address will start with c: or d: or something
similar. If it is online, it will start http://

If the address (also called a URL) is too long to show the whole line on
your screen, it may show the end or the beginning. If you want to see
the other end, click on the address (or press Ctrl-L) and then press the
Home key to see the beginning, or the End key to see the end.

Hope this helps. :-)

I think I have figured out how to change the line length when using
Text file. I see that it has a box after those words with 80 in it.
I have changed that number several times...now to 170. It is far
better. I made the report with the page in landscape and then copied
it and pasted it into Word. There are still some things to fix once it
is in Word, but at least that can be done.

If there are any easier ways or something else that I should know

You can reset the line length yourself.

Everything on your computer and everything you use on your computer
has a default, which are the factory settings. You can pretty much
change those to whatever you want, so if the default line length is,
say, 60 characters, you can change that to 80 characters or whatever
 you want.

More than that, though, it seems like the document is online.

If you haven't physically uploaded your document to a website anywhere
using an upload program of sort, it is NOT online.

If you are composing the document on your computer, it's not going
 anywhere.

If you are composing it on a blog site (eg Wordpress or similar),
then, yes, it will be online.

Maybe I should have understood that before making it, but I did
not. I don't have permission from my family to put all of this
  information online.

What makes you think it is online?

  How do I remove it??

Since it's unlikely to be online you won't need to.

I also tried the text file. This also seems to keep all of the
text on the left side of the page, wrapping the text before
  necessary. Any thoughts?

Again you can reset the line length yourself. Have a look in the
settings. Look but don't do anything at first! See what there is, then
change what you want to but remember what you've changed. Legacy
is one of those lovely programs that allows you to reset to the defaults
if you get in a muddle :)

Bear in mind an HTML/RTF document is at least four times larger than
a plain text document. You won't see all the coding on your computer
 but it's there.

If your document isn't how you'd like, save it as it is, then make a
 copy and
have a fiddle around with it to get it to be the way you want.

for Chrome, so figured that it was online.

If there are any easier ways or something else that I should know
about how to do this, please pass that along.
                        Thanks very much,
                              Priscilla

Mike,

What I mean is that, when I generate a surname list showing only the surname
UNKNOWN, there will be a long list of people in the surname list that follow
the following format:

UNKNOWN, John Thomas

UNKNOWN, Michael James

etc.

etc.

Then in addition to these persons with unknown surnames, there will be a few
people with KNOWN surnames and KNOWN given names, in alphabetical order, some
before the UNKNOWN surnames and some after the UNKNOWN surnames. In my case,
there are something like 354 people with surnames listed as UNKNOWN, and three
people listed before them alphabetically: e.g.:

BAKER, Susan A.

COMSTOCK, Mary Elizabeth

THOMAS, Edward

UNKNOWN, John Thomas

UNKNOWN, Michael James

etc.

etc.

Hope this explains what is happening.

Another stab in the dark would be similar to what Paul said but I would think
that perhaps you added an AKA for John T. and did not enter a surname in the
surname field when you when you added the a.k.a. James Thomas. Likewise for
Michael J.

Re: [LegacyUG] Geo Database

2015-03-06 Thread Wendy Howard
No. It should be accessible to anyone who has the link.

I use this all the time, when I want to share documents, photos, etc
with someone else. It's better than attaching a file to an email, as it
keeps the size of the email down while still giving the recipient access
to the file. You can share one file, or you can share a whole folder,
with just the one link. This article tells you more about it -
https://www.dropbox.com/help/20?path=sharing_files_and_folders

Click on the link, and when the page comes up in your browser you should
see a button to download the file. Click on that, tell your computer
where to put the file (into your Downloads folder is fine unless you
want to put it somewhere else for your own reasons). Then carry on with
the install as instructed originally (run/execute the file, I expect).

Hope this helps. :-)

 Margaret,

That Win32 message means that you didn’t get a complete download.
 Try downloading from here

 https://www.dropbox.com/s/kkp669rqfqjdivd/LegacyGeoDBSetup.exe?dl=0

I have the file up on Dropbox for people that have problems
 downloading from our website.

I just downloaded the Geo Database and when I try to run it, it
says that it is not a valid Win32 application.

 Help!

 Thanks Margaret
