I have my family tree on Legacy and have been given information about a group
of people whose connections are tangled but one of whom is the connection for
all of them in my family tree. Because the same names are used through various
generous it makes it harder still as do the many scraps of paper.

What I wanted to put in the details of the eldest person, then add their
connections, then when I come across the one that connects with mine just go to
add a spouse and link to an existing person. Is that possible?

I'm hesitant to start a totally new family tree as I don't know at this stage
who the connection is and I feel that I will be helped by the box that asks me
if an individual I have entered is the same as one I already have on.

OK - I am in the process of adding this new group of people. My query now is
how I join them into my main family group. Will this happen automatically when
I link someone from this unlinked individual's family or do I have to actually
have to merge the two groups.

Thank you once again.

Re: [LegacyUG] Add an individual person

2015-03-21 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi June,
That's it. You just link in the one person and they're all linked in.

This is the advantage of using just one file for all your research. When
you find a link, you don't have to merge files.

Sometimes you will find you have duplicates in the one file. Then you do
a manual merge of the two people you've decided are the same person. A
much easier task than merging two whole files.

When I started on a particular line many years ago, I had a heap of
paper from various people. A quick glance suggested they were all the
same. It was only by entering the data one piece of paper at a time that
I discovered that there were lots of little differences and some big
ones. Then I had to find other information to resolve the differences.
But if I'd kept just staring at the paper I doubt I would have picked up
the little differences though I guess the big ones would have dawned on
me eventually.

RE: [LegacyUG] gedcoms

2015-03-21 Thread Barton Lewis
This is not working. Here are the options I am choosing:

1. Export Gedcom file.
2. Record selection.
3. Selected records contained in the focus group.
4. Edit focus group.
5. Add an individual and descendants.
6. Change (to my ancestor George D Lane)
7. Spouse (selecting All spouses)
8. Click OK in Descendant Options dialog box, leaving Descendants selected
(as opposed to Entire Descendant Line)
9. Click OK in Focus Group dialog box
10. Click Close in GEDCOM Record Selection dialog box
11. Click Select file name and start export.

I export the file and then import it into a new fdb file. George D Lane shows
up and all his children by his 3 wives. Their names are listed as unknown.
His descendants show up down to me but none of his descendants' spouses are
listed.

What am I doing wrong? I want the descendants' spouses listed (e.g. his
daughter Isabelle's marriage to my great-grandfather; their son's marriage to
my grandmother, etc.)

When tagging or using a focus group there is a big difference between the
options

Descendants
Entire Descendant Line

You want, most likely, just the Descendants.

If you look to the right of the ***All Spouses*** you will see a Spouse button.
If you click that you will notice that your anchor person's spouses are
listed. If there are more than one, you can click a specific spouse and then
your ***All Spouses*** will change to just that one spouse. This option
applies only to the anchor person.

If a direct descendant of this anchor person has more than one spouse those
spouses and any children they had together will be in the focus group. What
won't be in the focus group will be any additional spouses the direct line's
spouse had (does that make sense?)

For example, if I did the descendants of my 3rd great grandfather, both of my
2nd great grandfather's marriages would appear and all of the children he had
with both wife's but his second's wife's first husband will not appear nor any
children she had with him.

Now your second question. When you are creating a gedcom I always recommend
that you leave it at the defaults (Legacy gedcom) that will create a gedcom
that has the most information in it and any of the top programs will be able to
read it. The only time I would crank it down to one of the lesser options is
if I was creating the gedcom for someone that didn't have one of the top
programs or I was doing it for a specific website. For example, if you export
to an Ancestry.com tree format it takes into consideration what Ancestry can
handle as incoming information. To get an idea, you can change the format and
then click the Customize button on the right. You will be able to see exactly
will, and won't be exported for that format.

Confirmed. Problem report raised to have this fixed. The hyphen is
needed because User-default and Legacy-default are two-word adjectives
for settings. In those type of adjective the words are supposed to by

that there is another option to Reset to User-Defaults (if one was saved).
Interestingly the window that opened asked me to confirm if I wanted to

selecting Reset to Legacy-Defaults and once again I was asked if I wanted
to Reset to User-Defaults. This time I answered Yes and fortunately got
 back the Legacy Defaults.

I then changed the Color Scheme to some ugly looking pea-green and saved
that as my User Default. I retried the option to Reset to Legacy-Default,
got the same dumb question about resetting to User-Default, answered yes,
and fortunately things were reset to Legacy Defaults and not the User

OK, so am I having a senior moment here or does the Confirmation window have
the wrong words on it and should read Reset all colors to the
Legacy-Default setting? instead of the erroneous Reset all colors to the
User-Default setting? You'll note that the confirmation window actually
asks both questions at the same time but I've got a one-track mind so I get

And the most important question of all is why did the programmer think it
was necessary to put a hyphen between User and Default or Legacy and

You are not doing anything wrong. There is a known problem recorded in
our system for export of a focus group. Spouses are not included in the
export, even though they are part of the group.

To get all the correct people in the export tag all the people in the
focus group then export the tagged people to the GEDCOM. Export of a
group of tagged records will include the spouses.

spouse had (does that make sense?)

For example, if I did the descendants of my 3rd great grandfather, both of my
2nd great grandfather's marriages would appear and all of the children he had
with both wife's but his second's wife's first husband will not appear nor
any children she had with him.

Now your second question. When you are creating a gedcom I always recommend
that you leave it at the defaults (Legacy gedcom) that will create a gedcom
that has the most information in it and any of the top programs will be able
to read it. The only time I would crank it down to one of the lesser
options is if I was creating the gedcom for someone that didn't have one of
the top programs or I was doing it for a specific website. For example, if
you export to an Ancestry.com tree format it takes into consideration what
Ancestry can handle as incoming information. To get an idea, you can change
the format and then click the Customize button on the right. You will be
able to see exactly will, and won't be exported for that format.

Thanks, Michele. You're right - my C drive was not selected. Now all
gedcoms are showing. (I tend to use the word gedcom as a generic term and
what I really meant was fdb file.) But, now that all my fdb files are
showing I see I just need to click File, Open File to get to the fdb I need.
But I am having a new problem. I selected Add an individual and
descendants in my Focus Group and no spouses are showing in the file that
resulted. In the Focus Group list, the words and **All Spouses** are
showing at the end of the file name. I presumed this meant that was default
(to show spouses) but they are not showing. Also, my entire line on my dad's
side (all direct ancestors including spouses) is showing in the file,
although my ancestor that I have chosen to generate this file is on my mom's
side. Why are both these things happening? I only want to see my maternal
ancestor, his wives and children and all his descendants and their spouses.

Finally, if I don’t know the genealogy software of the person I am sending
the gedcom to, should I choose Basic?

 Thanks,

Barton,
Just to make sure that a bug hadn't crept in I did this in my own file and
everything worked exactly like I expected. So here is what I want you to do.

Close Legacy, reboot your computer and then open Legacy back up. Now do a
check/repair on your file. Select File File Maintenance Check Repair.
Click Proceed. If an error is found select No so that the check/repair will
continue. If there are errors found, run the check repair again until there
are no errors. If there are any errors that Legacy can't clear automatically,
look at the log file that is generated and it will give you the information you
need to clear the errors manually.

Try the gedcom again and if it doesn't work this time I want you to send an
email to supp...@legacyfamilytree.com Put Attn: Michele in the subject line.
Make a backup of your file, data portion only, leave the other boxes unchecked.
Attach that backup file to the email that you send. As soon as I am done
looking at your file to see if I can figure out what is going on I will delete
it off of my computer permanently. In the email tell me that your starting

In Legacy you can create web pages and, if ipage allows you to upload
your own web page files, you can upload those web page files to your
ipage site using a FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program.

You will need some knowledge of web page HTML language to create the
links on your ipage home page to the Legacy created files you upload.

Without knowledge of the limitations and capability provided by an ipage
site I cannot give you more details.

Yahoo mail is a real problem for us. They've done some things to their
headers which supposedly stop spammers and it's caused problems for
all sorts of lists, unless you're posing to a Yahoo group!

I'd recommend using a different email address for contacting us and

 Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] gedcoms

When tagging or using a focus group there is a big difference between
 the options

 Descendants
 Entire Descendant Line

You want, most likely, just the Descendants.

If you look to the right of the ***All Spouses*** you will see a Spouse
button. If you click that you will notice that your anchor person's spouses
are listed. If there are more than one, you can click a specific spouse and
then your ***All Spouses*** will change to just that one spouse. This option
applies only to the anchor person.

If a direct descendant of this anchor person has more than one spouse
those spouses and any children they had together will be in the focus
group. What won't be in the focus group will be any additional
spouses the direct line's spouse had (does that make sense?)

You will be
able to see exactly will, and won't be exported for that format.

group then export the tagged people to the GEDCOM. Export of a group of
tagged records will include the spouses.

This is not working. Here are the options I am choosing:

 1. Export Gedcom file.
 2. Record selection.
 3. Selected records contained in the focus group.
 4. Edit focus group.
 5. Add an individual and descendants.
 6. Change (to my ancestor George D Lane)
 7. Spouse (selecting All spouses)
 8. Click OK in Descendant Options dialog box, leaving Descendants
selected (as opposed to Entire Descendant Line) 9. Click OK in Focus
Group dialog box 10. Click Close in GEDCOM Record Selection dialog
box 11. Click Select file name and start export.

I export the file and then import it into a new fdb file. George D Lane
shows up and all his children by his 3 wives. Their names are listed as
unknown. His descendants show up down to me but none of his descendants'
 spouses are listed.

What am I doing wrong? I want the descendants' spouses listed (e.g.
his daughter Isabelle's marriage to my great-grandfather; their son's
 marriage to my grandmother, etc.)

This
option applies only to the anchor person.

If a direct descendant of this anchor person has more than one spouse
those spouses and any children they had together will be in the focus
group. What won't be in the focus group will be any additional
spouses the direct line's spouse had (does that make sense?)

For example, if I did the descendants of my 3rd great grandfather, both of
my 2nd great grandfather's marriages would appear and all of the children he
had with both wife's but his second's wife's first husband will not appear
nor any children she had with him.

This happened to me when I tried to post via a different email address.
Once I realized what I did, I just sent it from the address where I had
subscribed. Duh moment. Senior moment, whatever!

 such things.
Also, I am not using Yahoo.

Yahoo mail is a real problem for us. They've done some things to their
headers which supposedly stop spammers and it's caused problems for
all sorts of lists, unless you're posing to a Yahoo group!

I'd recommend using a different email address for contacting us and
sending emails to the list - see if that doesn't make a difference. I
know Yahoo doesn't work using our Problem Report Form so it's not just
 our email list software.

Was I removed due to inactivity? Because I've been on the list for
 years.
