Re: [LegacyUG] Adding 23and Me DNA results to Legacy?

2016-11-25 Thread Elizabeth Lindsay
Thanks Dave N.
I realise I did not think my question out clearly enough.

What I should have asked is why does Legacy not include 23andMe and GEDmatch
in the list of options.
What I really want to be able to do, is for anyone who I know has been
tested:
1) tick the box for one of the DNA test companies and then,
2) add the Kit Number and,
3) add the haplogroup and,
4) add what family names the test results relate to, or confirm.

If I can assign a tag or colour to these results, that would be helpful.

Regards,
Elizabeth

You don't! Legacy does not even have 23andMe listed as a test provider. To
overcome this deficiency I have created a separate "DNA test" event to
record individuals that have taken DNA tests.
Unfortunately that alone doesn't colour the DNA icon.

However, your question was about adding 23andMe (autosomal) test results to
Legacy. What sense is there in doing this? Legacy cannot do anything with
them. If you have looked at your results you will see there are about
600,000 lines of data. I doubt you'd want to type them in!
If on the other hand you only want to show the Y and mt haplogroups (which
actually have nothing to do with an autosomal test) then add them to the
notes of a specific event that you create.

Cheers! -- Dave N.

Thanks, Cathy.

Funnily enough I didn't have the pop-up on Family View enabled - so I won't
miss that.

Re TNG - I have found it is best for me to use Basic Sources rather than
Source Writer and I don't plan on using Shared Events as these don't
translate well into TNG.

Legacy 8 installation does not overwrite Legacy 7.5 as the default locations
have changed.
So you can install Legacy 8 and still use Legacy 7.5.
You can't use the same database so make sure you convert a copy of your
database in a different folder rather than your current Legacy 7.5 database.

It's expected that Legacy 9 will overwrite Legacy 8.

RE TNG, John Lisle, one of the main Legacy testers, does extensive testing
of Legacy gedcom to TNG. You're likely to get more rather than less.
He's already been testing for Legacy 9 new features and most have been
implemented to aid upload to TNG.

Like Monique, I still miss the information pop-up on Family View that has
been replaced by the Child Scrolling Grid that I don't find anything like as
helpful. I tend to use Descendant View for a quick overview of children now,
after customising the columns.
But that's nothing to do with Gedcom.

Re: [LegacyUG] V8 -Lost features that were in V7.5

2016-11-25 Thread Monique Riley
Jennifer,

One thing that I really miss from v7.5 is when you hovered over a child in the
Family View, you could see the full date and place for birth, christening, and
death along with the full marriage date with spouse. In v8, you only get to see
the spouses name when you hover over the child's name.

That was so handy. I know in v8 you can change to a grid view, but if a family
has a lot of children, you can't see them all at once in the grid view. It was
very handy to quickly hover and see migration of families by where the vital
events of the children were taking place. I use the "best fit columns" for my
children to display in both v7.5 and v8.

That's the only feature I can think of that was lost. Maybe it was the only one
that I cared about though.

Re: [LegacyUG] search function not working

2016-11-25 Thread Brian Kelly
Actually none of the records returned by Family Search, which are all
from US census records, are for the Henry Riley in my line. My Henry was
born lived and died in Canada. He was never in the United States.

I am not looking for anything about him, he was just an example of how
the internet search at FamilySearch - Family trees was working. This
conversation started when someone reported that the FamilySearch -
Family trees search was not working for him. He posted the search string
from his Legacy which leads to a strange site. I posted my string so he
could try it and see if that still takes him to the same strange site. I
never intended anyone else to use the search string to visit the
FamilySearch - Family Trees site or use the records it returned.

[LegacyUG] Formatting issue in Source Detail

2016-11-25 Thread Gene Wheeler
When I enter info into the Source Detail, I enter it such as:

Name: Elizabeth Cate
Birth Date: 6 Apr 1765
Birth Place: Barrington, Strafford, New Hampshire, United States
Father's name: John Cate
FHL Film Number: 1000492

Then I save it.

When I come back later to view it, the info has been reformatted to:

Name: Elizabeth Cate Birth Date: 6 Apr 1765 Birth Place: Barrington,
Strafford, New Hampshire, United States Father's name: John Cate FHL Film
Number: 1000492

The data has been run together, making it more difficult to read when
printed out.

If I then modify the entry by placing an ENTER in the appropriate places to
recover the desired format, thereafter it seems to stay formatted as
desired.

How can I overcome this so I don't have to deal with it twice? Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] patronymic names

2016-11-25 Thread A Hildrum
I just have to add that while what Linda says is basically true, sometimes
people did take a farm name as their last name and the family kept that as
their last name in spite of moving far away from the farm the name came
from. No rules without exceptions and there were quite a few of those.
There were some years agop discussions about adding a patronym field or an
extra name field, but I think Legacy gave up due to al the discussions
about Gedcoms etc, which is a pity.

Re: [LegacyUG] Moving Pictures

2016-11-25 Thread Robert57P_gmail
A NAS system is more like a local harddrive than Dropbox or OneDrive (in
my humble opinion).

You basically have 2 methods of access items on a NAS drive.
* On each PC, map a drive letter to the NAS drive. I'd suggest
something "higher" than the default - by default it will normally pick
the next available letter. That can create havoc later if you add an
additional harddrive or DVD drive or memory card reader to your system.
So rather than letting it default to D:, maybe pick N: (for NAS) or some
other letter in the middle of the alphabet. And I suggest you use the
same letter on both PCs (that way if you copy a Legacy configuration
from one PC to the other, the media will not have to be relinked).
Doing the mapping will make your computer basically think the drive is
on your own PC and any software should be able to use it.
* The other method us to use the UNC(?) (Universal Naming Convention??
Not sure if that's the right initials/name). If you use this method,
instead of "D:\mr1" you would use something like: "\\Qnap-xyz\mr1" The
first part is whatever your NAS system is known as, 2nd part is your
normal directory path (of course the path part could include more
folders just like when you use a drive letter, it is not limited to just
the first level). Be careful with capitalization, some NAS systems are
case sensitive while others don't care.

I believe the 2nd method (UNC) tends to be preferred by most
professionals, but I'm not sure why. Bottom line, use whichever you are
most comfortable with and whichever method the software (in this case,
Legacy) prefers. I have both Legacy and a NAS, but I've never tried
storing Legacy data there (I use my NAS strictly for backups). I just
did a QUICK test with Legacy, and it appears it only allows for drive
letters, not UNCs. But my testing wasn't very involved so I could be
wrong . . . but it looks like you may be better off mapping a drive
letter to your NAS drive for Legacy.

Hope this helps,
Bob

I worked on this Henry in Family Search today. I have tons of family in Henry
Co, Indiana who have probably married in to this Riley line in several ways.
Are you looking for something specific?

Couldn't you also use the "Residence name" to determine the residence to

The message was meant for the original poster who is having a problem
with the search internet feature. I sent a search string by my Legacy

work if you paste the string into any web browser.

Re: [LegacyUG] patronymic names

2016-11-25 Thread Linda Greethurst
The patronym IS the normal surname if you are researching those areas who
have subscribed to that practice. If a surname ends in a variation of
"son, sen" or "datter, dotter" then you KNOW it was a patronym. Anything
else identifies a residence where they lived at some point in their life.
Those other names often changed within a person's lifetime. So for
example, if Ole Petersen lived in one place when he was baptized, but lived
somewhere else when he was married and lived a third place when he died, he
would have 3 different "residence names" but he was still Ole Petersen.
The inclusion of the residence in a name was a means of separating
individuals who also had the name of Ole Petersen. In Legacy I use the
AKA's to identify the residence name. By the way, I have 27 direct line
Ole Olsen's in my family tree and that residence name keeps them all unique
individuals (along with the RIN that Legacy assigns them).

[LegacyUG] patronymic names

2016-11-25 Thread Thomas Wildeboer
Hello,

my east-frisian (part of north germany) ancestors have patronymic names. In my old genealogy-programm i could enter the patronymic name in a special field. There I could search for patronymic names as surname, the persons are listed under the patronymic in surname list, in reports I can set a special format (italic or bold)  for the patronym, so I can see that it is nor a "normal" surname. That is important for the search of further ancestors, because the father has not the same patronym for surname as the child, from the patronym i only can get the fathers first name e. g. father of Harm Jansen has the first name Jan and the patronym of Jan could be Otten, Pieters, Harmsen

The patronym is not only used in northern germany, it is also used in netherlands, island and scandinavian countries. So I hope that Legacy can handle it correct.

Is there a special "control character" to mark a surname as patronym? How can I list persons under the patronym in surname lists? How can i format the patronym in reports and maybe also for screen-output/views?
For your answers and tipps I thank you in advance.

Regards,
Thomas

like to move these to my NAS server so that both computers can access
the photos, if I move them and then tell Legacy to relink them and set
it up for future photos to be filed under the NAS server will this
work and will both computers be able to pick up the photos (not at the
same time of course!). Thank you, Marion
