Re: [LegacyUG] File problems

2016-11-26 Thread Cathy Pinner

Pat,

There may be only 25 more to go but they (or others you've already
checked) may have been attached to more than one place.

Next time you decide to change filenames, do them as much as possible in
the Picture Centre. You can only change image names there. That way
Legacy corrects the links. However, it doesn't include images attached
to sources as far as I know.

OR the broken links may not all be caused by filename changes if you've
been moving things around as well.

You'd have to look at the list available when you do a check.

So what do I do now??? it has taken me /hours/ to reduce the number
from 122 to 25!

I always backup Legacy when I close it.

Re: [LegacyUG] File problems

2016-11-26 Thread Cathy Pinner
From within the program, you can see - I think it's the last 10 -
recently opened files by clicking the Big L in the top left corner of
the program window.

If it's not a big L you'll have a System Ribbon Tab - has the same items.
Which you have depends on the Ribbon style you're using.

If you don't follow - there are pictures in this article:
http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00895/11/Error-Messages-Problems/I-lost-my-family-file-Legacy-8.html

I use this Recent File list all the time to switch between files.

I only have one personal real file, but I'm a Legacy tester so have
heaps of test files.

Your comments have nothing to do with this conversation. If you wish to
start a new "thread" please do so but it is considered as rude to jump on

would be better off starting your own "thread", or better still putting in

Thank you for the extra information. I agree with what you say concerning
backups, although I do not have more than the 1 extra external hard drive
at present, 1 other has copies of files. I have a 3Tb one and it is
encrypted - it took me a while to be persuaded to get the NAS but I love it

If you have the Legacy icon pinned to the task bar and you right click on it
you will get a list of the most recent files.

How do I get a list of the files I've recently opened (I just need the last
two).

I have been going thru my media files and changing the names of some of them to
improve consistency and make finding what I want easier.

Somehow, when I click File, Open, I am given the option of using a Windows
dialog or having Legacy create a list when all I want is a list of the most
recent files!

Thanks!

Re: [LegacyUG] Formatting issue in Source Detail

2016-11-26 Thread Gene Wheeler
Jenny,

Thanks for your reply! I copy and paste, then delete extraneous spaces. If
the original text is "linear"; i.e. not in a column, I will place Returns
where appropriate to make it columnar. If the original is already columnar,
I copy and paste, then delete the extraneous spaces. However, in the latter
case, I have NOT been adding any Returns. Perhaps that's what I should do.
For instance, the text found in Findagrave for birth, death, burial info is
already columnar. This is primarily where I notice the "run together" that
I have experienced. I will experiment with adding Returns and see if that
fixes my problem.

Will let you know the results. Thanks!

As for 23andMe... none of the autosomal testing companies are
included in Legacy's list. I can only assume that's because the
initial list has not been updated or perhaps the programmers don't
know what use it would be because there's basically no test data to
record. -- 23andMe is the only testing company that provides basic Y
and mt haplogroup information with an autosomal test (and
unfortunately it causes many testees to believe they also need those
to match!)

GEDmatch is not a DNA testing company so should not be in the list.
There should however be a place (the test Notes?) to record an
uploaded GEDmatch kit ID when the autosomal testing company is
selected. But currently, since the testing company cannot be
selected this doesn't apply.

So you need to create a new event such as "Autosomal-DNA test" and
use it to record the testing company, and GEDmatch kit number, etc.
I find this works better than the DNA Records area because it's
visible from the Individual's Information window without further
clicking.

> If I can assign a tag or colour to these results, that would be

Obviously you could uniquely tag these individuals for a DNA flag but
that would be a separate action on your part.

Millennia could have done so much more to make Legacy useful to
genetic genealogists but didn't, and it wasn't from lack of
suggestions by myself and other ISOGG members! Why useless DNA
selections were incorporated when no features were using them has
never made sense to me. Legacy 9 will apparently have a mediocre use
of them in Charting but still nothing really worthwhile.

This would be solved with a simple option to add a selected color to a
tree, and another to a different tree, which would help me immensely.

However, Tagging will do the trick but its very easy to muck up.

Bob did a nice job explaining that.
A UNC - Universal Naming Convention doesn't depend on drive letters. In
business it can be easy to run out of drive letters A-Z.
It just point the drive to a location the \\name.

When you hear cloud computing or cloud storage, just remember it means
someone eles's computer or storage. A NAS Network Attached Storage is your
personal cloud storage. Wow your friends with that one. "I have a cloud
storage system I setup at home"

Good practice to have a second or third portable drive for backups. I use
those Western Digital 1TB Passport drives in different colors. One travels
with me at all times. They are encrypted so losing one does not expose your
life to anyone; just make the password the same and put it in your will or
someplace your next of kin can get to it. A second is stored in at my dad's
house, and a third is locked up in the vault at work. I just rotate them on
a monthly basis.

I mainly use SW and make entries like that in Source Text and it only
