Re: [LegacyUG] sourcing question

2017-04-20 Thread Cathy Pinner

You don't source Names?
How do you know where you found the name or the name variants?

Yes if it only has the name, then you add the source to the name.
If it had name and birth date, I'd add it to both name and birth date.

The only exceptions for me is if I have a number of better sources for
the Name already.

Yes - see File - Import - The Master Genealogist - but it is still
having a few tweaks.

You could try it and report issues.

I understand that date ranges is one issue. Legacy dates currently
require the same date elements to be entered both sides of a valid date
range.

eg bet May 1876 and Jun 1880 is OK but not May 1876 to 1880.

This is probably peripheral to the discussion on Emdash / Endash and Legacy
FT's clean-up abilities.

One source of information that I use a lot is from digitized (Australian)
newspapers, at Trove. The OCR text usually
requires correction (human recognition) and that includes changing Emdash to
hyphen, inserting spaces, concatenating hyphenated words, etc etc.

But a simple Copy then Paste into a Notes field in Legacy isn't an option for
me. Stripping the HTML doesn't improve the situation - but that's fine by me.

Routinely, I paste into a plain-text editor set up in a simple Encoding (for PC
of course) - using an Encoding like Unicode BOM is asking for trouble, I have
found. Then, I create accurate text but sometimes leave it in newspaper column
format - or, make it more readable in continuous-text paragraphs.

This process is much lengthier than just changing a few single-symbol bits like
an Emdash. But I have seen the 'conversion' by Legacy to '97' which is why I
adopted the method described.

I find it has a benefit - I read more attentively, and understand better. Some
of the articles - and even common-place advertisements - are fascinating.

I believe it was first reported for Legacy 8, I do not have the problem
reporting system open right now to confirm that.

The programmers never say which problems they plan on working on,
sometimes they even fix a problem but do not update the system. Usually
because they noticed a problem and fixed it but did not know that a
problem report on that issue had been submitted and recorded in the
problem tracking system.

The problem with the Emdash (and also with the Endash) is a known issue.
According to the problem report Legacy is inconsistent in treatment of these

My main problem so far with V9 after having converted from v 7.5 (I
skipped v 8) is that in my notes, emdash is rendered as '97. I have
dozens of these in notes obtained from old newspaper transcripts. Is
there a way I can stop them appearing this way?

Thankfully they haven't changed the 'look and feel' of Legacy. Mine upgraded

I'm pleased with the upgrade.

Re: [LegacyUG] Is there a way to order the RIN column in the Index tab in a file?

2017-04-20 Thread Bob Austen
Here you would probably look for the largest RIN, unless they have been
reused.

You can also do a Detailed Search:
Search/Detailed Search/Individual/Added date/After(use the date that
you last used the laptop)
This will show any/all individuals added after the date specified. You have
to spell out the date, say 15 April 2017.
If you have been adding more people on your desktop computer since adding
the 'missing person' on your laptop either way is going to be a bit
involved.

If you click in the RIN box at the top of the view the index view will
sort by that, the same is true if you click in given or surname boxes.

Hi Gary,

Go to LegacyFamilyTree.com and you will be on the page to order/download Legacy
9.0

If it doesn’t come up as the first screen then click on Online Store/Legacy
Products in the menu bar and select the package that you want to purchase.

A quick look for that person in each copy is a very fast and easy way to

If that person exists or is missing in BOTH copies, then you need he more
difficult process.
Good luck.

Cathy, I have not seen any comments re Families, does it work with V9?
Mika,

To use Families on your iPad an iPhone, you need to get the app from the store
and then go to
http://www.telgen.co.uk/families/
and get the Families Sync program for you computer.
That's what converts and syncs the databases.
It's not automatic.
You'll find more directions and videos on that website.

I bought Family Sync in the iTunes apps but I can't get it downloaded. The

document tab anywhere. Would rather just somehow download Legacy.

Re: [LegacyUG] New Version 9

2017-04-20 Thread Brian Kelly
The FAG tools in Legacy will let you get to the memorial for a person
with a single click as Geoff showed in his demo. All you can do there is
view the memorial, perform a search etc. that anyone can perform. If you
want to use the features at FAG that are available to members you will
still need to sign in to your account. I am not a member of FAG so I do
not know what "extra" features an account holder has.

The same "rule" applies to the sites like MyHeritage and Find My Past
which are providing the new Hints service. You can get to the site and
see what record(s) they found but before they let you view the details
of those records you need an account and in most cases since these are
paid sites you need to have a paid subscription that covers the kind of
records you want to view. FamilySearch also requires you to have an
account but that site provides free accounts and allows you to view all
their records without payment.

Re: [LegacyUG] Farewell, and thanks for all the help

2017-04-20 Thread JERALDINE M SOCHA
I too am waiting to upgrade.  Glad I didn't rush to "push the button".  Looks
like there are bugs to be worked out.

will be back to queries on v7, v8 and v9 in no time at all.
Hope you decide to stay - we need users who refuse to change and we shall still
need help whatever version we are running!  :(

I don't think I'll be upgrading, as most of the new features do not interest
me, and program bloat tends to make one's computer run slower.

And it seems that most of the traffic here will be about Version 9 from now
on, so it's time to say goodbye.

Thanks to all the helpful people here for help received.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 questions

2017-04-20 Thread Brian Kelly
If your question on Hashtags has not been answered here is my take on
their usage.

A Hashtag is a label you can apply to one or many people in your file.
Once you have given them that label legacy has ways to create lists,
reports etc. on all the people so labelled.

Say you want to trace all the descendants of your ancestor(s) who came
over on the Mayflower. Now only one or very few people would have an
event for their arrival in North America on the Mayflower but by giving
all their descendants the Hashtag "Mayflower Descendant" you can take
advantage of the tools legacy provides for finding, listing and
reporting on people with that Hashtag. In a way it is an extension of
the current nine numeric tags but now you can have an infinite number of
hashtags.

So far as I know when Legacy programmers were looking for a name for
their new feature they borrowed the term from the social networking site
Twitter. Twitter uses a hashtag (named because they are preceded with
the hash mark #) as a way to group posts to that site by subject.

When/why would one use a "hashtag" instead of an "event/fact"? Or would
some things be entered in both places? (putting something in both places
seems like it might be a bit of a pain.)

Why the name "hashtag"? Doesn't seem very descriptive to me . . . but I
can't think of a better name at the moment.

If I currently have something in an EVENT/FACT in version 8, but it
should really be a HASHTAG - how do I move it? (I've only downloaded
the free copy of version 9 so far and hashtags are only allowed in the
deluxe version - so I can't experiment/play with them. Answers to the
above questions may become "obvious" once I have the deluxe version??)

I thought one of the features that was being written into "the next
version" of Legacy (a.k.a. version 9) was same sex marriages. But, from
what I'm seeing, this still is not allowed. And I don't see any mention
of it in the "what's new" info. I'm sure I've seen posts saying the
programmers are working on this feature (or at least looking into it),
but it looks like it still isn't there. Is there an ETA for this feature?

Thanks,
Bob

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 9 connecting to Family Search

2017-04-20 Thread Jenny M Benson

On 20-Apr-17 04:25 AM, Cathy Pinner wrote:

I haven't seen a problem with the Legacy FamilySearch module.

I am having a small problem there, which existed (but I don't know for
how long) before I upgraded from 8 to 9.

It works fine for people who are already linked to FS or for people for
whom there is a match in FS but if I add my Legacy person to FS no data
at all appears on any of the Legacy FS tabs - although the arrows
indicating the person is matched do appear in the left-hand pane - until
I click on "I am finished sharing data."

I haven't used Legacy FS much for a few months, but noticed this
behaviour when I added someone using Legacy 8 a couple of weeks ago.
Same thing when I added someone from Legacy 9 this morning.

It's possibly some quirk of my particular set up - I can live with it.
When I get a chance I will try using my laptop.

Re: [LegacyUG] Windows Update

2017-04-20 Thread Ian Thomas
Ian Mac -
Call me cautious, but I download each new update and keep it in a folder – in
case a new release seriously breaks something (this hasn’t happened with Legacy
FT, but has with other software). Of course these are my download occasions –
not the date that Millennium released each update.
My file and folder dates (using the proper way to write a date, of course) for
a few versions -
595: 1/03/2017
596: 25/03/2017
598: 15/04/2017

I missed 597 – possibly away.

Perhaps 19 Apr 2017 is the date you downloaded and updated (Millennium may keep
track)?

The Windows 10 ‘Creators Update’, which occurred around 11 April (a week ago),
‘broke’ a couple of features in some programmes including Legacy Family Tree. I
think this was mentioned a few days ago, in this forum – just checked: the
availability of a new build that fixed that problem was posted by
Michele/Support on Friday 14 April.

Win 10 updated with some fancy name I don't remember but it seems that Legacy 8
is now failing to work properly. I have no idea if these are related. The
sympton that I have and the only one I have tried, is I cannot add a child to
the parents. Cntr N worked and I added the parents but when I try to add a
child nothing. Clicking on Click to add a child in Family view does nothing at
all.
Any Ideas?I can easily switch to 9 but Was hoping to get some work in
before doing that.

If I right Cclick on the father, he opens and if I left click on the father it
does the same thing.
