Re: [LegacyUG] Export a select file

2017-09-30 Thread Cathy Pinner

Cheryl,
If you need to use a variety of Advanced tagging options to get the
group of people you want to export, you just use the same tag number for
each. Then you export the tagged group.

Sometimes the easiest way to get most of the people you want is to set
relationships to a key person for the group you want to export and then
search for Individual - Relationship - equal to - Related and tag them.
You'll want in the export to add the surrounding parents, spouses and
children with the checkboxes in the box where you say which tag group to
export.

Re: [LegacyUG] Procedure for installing and using OneDrive to backup my Legacy media files?

2017-09-30 Thread Barbara
Thank you so much for the detailed instructions! I have followed them, and now
have my backups in OneDrive.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Procedure for installing and using OneDrive to backup
my Legacy media files?

Here is an answer to basic backup.

1. In Legacy, go to File >Backup File

2. At bottom right, Click HELP >Show Help Topic. or watch a video.

This HELP completely talks about backups and the Legacy Cloud backup in 5 steps.

OneDrive Backup

1. In Legacy, go to File >Backup File

2. Select Backup to My Computer (Family File & Media Files)

3. Click CHANGE to far right of Family File

4. A windows file manger will open and you can then locate your OneDrive folder
(e.g: \OneDrive\Legacy Backups\ ) and save the Legacy Backupup files in that
folder. If you also have the Media Files selected for backup, Legacy asks if
you want to change the Media backup location to the same as Family File and the
answer would be YES. Note: I would suggest you create the \OneDrive\Legacy
Backups\ folder before starting steps 1-4 above - see step 3 below.

Questions about OneDrive:

1. Do I have OneDrive on my system?

 A. Yes, If you have Windows 8.1 or 10, it was automatically installed

 B. Yes, if you have Office 360 installed

2. How can I see if OneDrive is installed?

 A. You can use the Windows File manager (the yellow folder icon at bottom
in task bar) - Click on it, you should see in the left side window a folder
called OneDrive and maybe a few subfolders if you have created any.

3. How do I create a new subfolder under OneDrive called: \OneDrive\Legacy
Backups\ ?

 A. You can use the Windows File manager (the yellow folder icon at bottom
in task bar) - Click on it, you should see in the left side window a folder
called OneDrive

 B. Right Click on OneDrive >New >Folder

 C. Type the new folder name as: Legacy Backup

 D. Hit return. You should see the new folder under OneDrive in your
screen on left side.

4. What if I don't have a OneDrive Subfolder or OneDrive is not installed?

 A. You will need to download OneDrive from Microsoft and create an
account.

 B. Here is the link to do that:

https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-gb/support/

Enjoy!

Re: [LegacyUG] Procedure for installing and using OneDrive to backup my Legacy media files?

2017-09-30 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls
Legacy's backup procedure saves two separate "zip"=compressed files,
data and media. When doing a "restore", both files are needed.

The zipped data file can be saved to the Legacy cloud and to the same
hard drive as the program is on, or to an external drive.

The zipped media file can NOT be saved to the Legacy cloud. It can be
saved to the same hard drive as the program is on, or to an external drive.

I want to be able to save the backup zip file of Legacy Media files at
OneDrive. To use if my computer dies, etc. Then would install Legacy to
the new computer, copy the media zip file from OneDrive to the new
computer, unzip it, and add the media files to the Legacy media folder.
I can get the "data" files from the Legacy cloud backup.

I already save a copy of photo files to Google Drive for free. Not the
highest resolution, but should be OK if needed. I also backup the Legacy
zip files of data and media to two external hard drives. But, if all the
files in our house are lost in a fire or tornado, the data base could be
re-created from the cloud files.

Gedcom files can also be made to save our data, but will not save media.
Any Legacy update could destroy our existing Legacy data...

I only use my Legacy data on my home computer. Do not want to access it
any other way!

Hope this is correct and makes sense to everyone.

I just need help with the OneDrive install and setup as previously
indicated. My old brain can not seem to follow the instructions I have
found so far!

Re: [LegacyUG] Export a select file

2017-09-30 Thread JV Leavitt
No. My example was for descendants, but you can use the same Tagging
feature, only start by Tagging ancestors first. Tag any sections,
ancestors, and/or descendants, and/or individuals, and then go to
Export, and choose All records with an individual tag of: (select the
Tag number you used), and start the export.

Be happy. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Export a select file

2017-09-30 Thread Cheryl Rothwell
I did it. It doesn't include everything I want. (When I start with the
youngest it drops his siblings for instance.) However, I can live with it.

A bigger issue is the process apparently delinks people. I've tried it
three exports three different ways (to see what I get) and I always get
delinks of several sets of a child in the direct link from his parents. The
child and the parents are there, just not linked to each other. (And not
the same sets of child/parents in each file so I can't figure out the
issue.) They are linked in the original file. It is easy enough to relink
them but it makes creating the new file a lot more work. (I said his
parents because, so far, it has always been a male line. Probably not
relevant.)

way to include spouse's parents. If you first Tag all descendants, and

Yes there is. I did one for descendants, I really don't know if it can be
done for ancestors. I'm sure someone has experience with this. I used a
focus group to do it. Not much help, I am afraid.

Re: [LegacyUG] Dates when not really known

My feeling is to continue to use "Abt., or at the very least, Circa. It
would appear that the programmers have attempted to "standardize" this
feature so everyone would be on the same page. In most case my "Abt"s are
within + or - 5 yrs. For the neophyte, or for others reading our
genealogies, that prefix is easier to understand.

Hi Roxanne, since no has addressed your problem to help you out I will add my
two cents.

If your old computer is still working and providing that you have been backing
up your media files on your old computer then just copy your old media files to
a USB stick or burn them to a disk or copy them to a portable hard drive than
transfer them into your new computer.
