Re: [LegacyUG] Lost All Comments

2019-06-02 Thread Brian Kelly
I hope you have a date on the Dec backup where you found your missing
comments. If it is not part of the file name created by Legacy you can
find the file date by checking the file properties. Windows should tell
you when the file was created.

In the current file you can search for and tag all those who were added
or changed in your file on or after the date of that backup. You can
export that tagged group to a new file. Then restore from the good
backup file I suggest you assign a new name to this so you do not
confuse it with or overwrite your existing file and import the contents
of the file of tagged people into your restored file.

You will have to do a merge for all those you modified in the file since
they will have been in the backup but now have changes you will need to
reconcile.

Re: [LegacyUG] Anyone know of a quick way to duplicate an individual?

2019-06-02 Thread Leon Chapman
If you export to a GEDCom file, you will most likely loose Legacy information,
since the standard is about 25 years old and does not fully support the modern
programs. Export to a new Legacy file ensures all the individuals information
is maintained.

2019-06-02 Thread Ian Thomas

Don Quigley’s method works well, without dramas. I have done exactly that –
mainly when I have included a lot of text descriptions in the Notes, and don’t
have media attachments/links or sources, stories, etc.

Those provisos have never been a problem, because the “duplication” scenario
(for me) has been one of a lot of uncertainty about the individuals at that
point.

However, as noted by Leon Chapman (his method creates a new Legacy database,
rather than just exporting to a GECOM file), make sure the Tag that you use has
been “cleared” – not already in use for other individuals that are not those
you want to ‘duplicate’).

However, you may need to consider this. The .GED file created will not have
links to or “contain” media files (images, etc and other files treated as
“media” by Legacy).

Re: [LegacyUG] Anyone know of a quick way to duplicate an individual?

2019-06-02 Thread Leon Chapman
Here is a process that would work:
1. Untag everyone in your DB
2. Use Tag 1 to tag only the individual you want to duplicate.
3. Export the Tag 1 person to a Legacy file.
4. Open Legacy file with 1 person you exported and rename the person or make
any other changes you want.
5. Open your original DB and import the 1 person DB with the newly renamed
person to your DB.
6. You can then link this person up with a family as needed.

There is an enhancement request in our tracking system to be able to do
