Re: [LegacyUG] Locations: towns in multiple counties?

2015-02-17 Thread Jessica Morgan
I have one that straddles state lines. Springhill, Webster, Louisiana - or
Springhill, Columbia County, Arkansas.

To make it even worse, the Springhill Cemetery there NOW is in Louisiana.
The ORIGINAL is in Arkansas.

So when I have this issue I include in the NOTES section, a blurb about the
two similar, but different, locations, and in parenthesis I include any
postulating on my part; ex (probably Webster Parish, but not confirmed
2/17/15).

I also have this issue with Shiloh Cemeteries, as there are about a dozen
within fifty miles of each other, all in different towns and varying
parishes in Louisiana. So I just make very detailed notes.

If I have an absolute confirmation, I put that in the appropriate field,
but if there is any doubt, I always add the other possible locations to my
notes so I don't continue to postulate without results.

However, there will be no internet access.

The only way to review the webinars without a connection is to buy the

Re: [LegacyUG] Legal Name Changes

2015-01-20 Thread Jessica Morgan
I enter the main name in Legacy as I will find it in 90% of their
documentation. My example is my father. He was born G. Stephen Morgan. He
did not know this until he was around 22 years old and met his biological
father. He was adopted at age 16, and at that time he made his name Stephen
M. Kaylor - He'd gone by Stephen Kaylor his entire life to that point, not
knowing he WASN'T SMK. He picked his middle name so it started with an M,
as his birth name ended with an M. So, for all intents and purposes my
father is in my database as Stephen M Kaylor, and the G Stephen Morgan is
under his AKA. There are only three documents I have found to date that use
G Stephen Morgan, his original birth cert, his baby book, and the divorce
decree between his biological parents. Everything else, school records,
marriage cert, hospital records, newspaper articles, work history, SS
statements, etc. are all under SMK.

I have a few relatives with similar situations, so I opt to file them as
what I know them by and will find the most documentation as.

explained the name change in the notes. His daughter was born under the
new name. I entered her name as it was at the time of her birth. Her name
does not match her father’s but that is okay. I always record the name at
 BIRTH for consistency’s sake.

IF this had been a legal name change and IF I had the court documents in

don’t even know if my uncle did this legally or not I don’t have an event

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for (did not understand
why tags came up on your detailed search) but you might want to do a
  detailed search with the following

  individual, birth place, contains, Kentucky
  OR
  individual, death place, contains, Kentucky
  OR
  individual, event place, contains, Kentucky

click on clear list before this search and then create your list

then when you have those results go into search (from options)
and click on add results to existing list

  individual, marriage place, contains, Kentucky
  OR
  individual, burial place, contains, Kentucky
  OR
  individual, baptism place, contains, Kentucky

then (making sure you are adding results to existing list) create list

you should get (I tried it with another State since I don't have any
  Kentucky folks)

individuals with either a birth, baptism, marriage, death, burial or
event place containing Kentucky (unless you did not include Kentucky
in your location). Then you can look at the list or print it out -
only grab surnames or grab the basic details on each person. Best of
  luck.

I guess this is why it is a good idea to spring clean your master
location list (I go through mine twice a year to catch errors) and I
do make a point to spell out the city/town, county, state/province,
and country. It does make things somewhat easier when you want to use
your database if you think about data input and data output.

There might be an easier or quicker way, but that is how I did it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Build 8.0.0.454 Conflict With Another Program

2014-11-11 Thread Jessica Morgan
I believe it depends on the windows platform you are using. An older
version of Windows did this on almost all programs I installed on a few
machines, until we got rid of Roxio completely. I'm wanting to say it was
Windows 95 or 2000. But this is a very well known problem with older
versions of Windows and Roxio. It isn't Legacy specific for those versions.

quite right with Roxio leaving a Windows Installer config file around.
Perhaps the fix-it tool will catch that, or he may wish to contact Roxio
and ask them to fix their misdirected install. But the big question in my
mind is why does Legacy want to run the Roxio config file? Apparently no
other program is wanting to do that. We may have to wait until we hear more
from the OP if the fix-it tool saves his day.

Thank you. This will give me at least a list of the right people, but I
need an ordered Descendant report that shows the relationships to each

I suppose if I export the gedcom file of these tagged it will give me a

 Ron has an excellent suggestion.

You can include all that info in a List Report from the Search List.
However, the report will be in order based on the order of the Search

You can create the report in CSV and open that in your spreadsheet
program to sort by relationship, but it wouldn't sort in Descendant
 order.

There is a lineage report in Legacy, but it's paternal only and
doesn't include all the info you want. The closest to what you want is
the female DNA chart in Legacy Charting.

[LegacyUG] Book Report Title Page Overlaying

2014-10-14 Thread Jessica Morgan
Is there a known issue with the title page of any book reports in
publishing center overlaying the title?

My title should read
Descendants of
So and so goes here

instead, both lines are on same line, thus making it illegible.

This happened with all the reports I tried to run with a title page, so I

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy Charting question

2014-10-06 Thread Jessica Morgan
Yes Brian, I understand all that. I'm at the point where I want to order
the chart, but am not sure about which width is appropriate. I don't want
it too spaced out, nor too compressed. I cannot tell by the screen visual
whether this will be the case. So does the order process default to the
best size for your chart, or some other default and I need to change this?

My box width is 1.5, Generation width .375, Space .25. Showing 4
generations.

At the bottom of the screen it shows Size 280.5 x 33.00 - so I would
assume I would need the 36 minimum? Or am I incorrect?

[LegacyUG] Can anyone replicate this, or what am I doing wrong? Calendar Report

2014-10-06 Thread Jessica Morgan
In the publishing center I've selected a calendar report.
Via Edit settings for current chapter button I then:

Included all individuals, living or dead
Under Format changed all colors to black and white manageable format colors
Under Months change text color to black, background to white
For Year of calendar I changed it from 2014 to 2015

I then close (no preview or print available) that box.
From Publishing Center I chose Preview..

and I get a blue and yellow formatted 2014 calendar. It ignores and resets
ALL my settings back to defaults.

How do I get this to do a 2015 calendar in black and white???

[LegacyUG] 8.0.0.439 Sources and Duplicates?

2014-10-02 Thread Jessica Morgan
I've been working very hard on a few files for a family reunion coming up,
and today I open up files to continue where I left off, and find that the
sourcing is completely gibberish in every file I open, as well as two to
five duplicates of persons in multiple databases. The RINs are all out of
order too. I have one file that the beginning person is listed correctly,
then two generations down he's also listed as his grandson's son, then his
great grandson's father.

I'm so frustrated

Is there a known bug in 439 for any of this, or is it just me? Any tips on
trying to correct the problems? I'm in tears over here! I've opened
multiple files, of different branches of my family, and they are all like
this.

I've had zero computer problems. I'm working on a Microsoft Surface Pro 2
that is less than a year old.

Re: [LegacyUG] Source a phone call

2014-09-03 Thread Jessica Morgan
I feel they are all interchangeable to some degree. Personally I have
created a source called Conversation, and anything done in passing, via
phone call, off the cuff, etc is sourced that way in my files.

This begs the question of sourcing more non traditional sources. Has
anyone broached the issue of sourcing Facebook? We have a family group
there to keep up with each other, and often times family will post
birthdays, anniversaries, congratulatory items, births, deaths, and photos
and documents there to share.

Re: [LegacyUG] DNA Testing

2014-08-11 Thread Jessica Morgan
I have had two Ancestry DNA kits done on direct family. I'm still sketchy
on the results, and not utilizing them 100% at all. It doesn't come with a
whole plethora of laymen instructional terms. I don't know half of what the
site refers to. It takes research and time that I don't quite have right
now.

As for ease of use, Ancestry was very simple, got results timely, etc.

That being said, I also downloaded the DNA files from Ancestry and uploaded
them to Gedmatch. I have hundreds of hits on gedmatch, and as it referenced
both matches exactly as they are (grandfather and granddaughter) as far as
generational match, I'd say it is pretty accurate. Again, I have a hard
time reading the data, but the gedmatch info gives you email addresses to
other members you match and you can then correspond with them.

I have a cousin that did the 23andme.com DNA testing. It seems to have more
information medical wise and such. Again, I can't understand it all!

Re: [LegacyUG] Children

2014-07-30 Thread Jessica Morgan
Thanks for the thumbs up. Someone else stated that it wasn't wise to number
the children, because it could be in error. I have to interject, that I
only number the children if I have documentation that tells me how many
there were, then I source the documentation. I am scrupulous at notes and
such, so I know where that number came from, and how solid, or vague, it
could be. Even if I have to make notes to myself that say something like
may not be 6 children, could be more or less.

I will also add male or female, and any other identifying information I
can. Referencing the twins I discussed earlier, I know one set was of two
males, so they actually say:

Twin Set 1 of 2 Child 1
Twin Set 1 of 2 Child 2
Twin Set 2 of 2 Male 1 of 2
Twin Set 2 of 2 Male 2 of 2

I wanted to be able to positively identify two sets of twins in my data,
and it reflect that in any reporting. Had I just marked Twin 1 and Twin 2,
it could have been misunderstood as duplicates at some point, and an entire
set of twins wiped out of my database. No bueno!

I didn't reference any other info I make -- because the original poster was
asking about naming in the child section of the screen. Any other pertinent
info, DOB, DOD, etc would be put in its proper place.

I do the same thing for unidentified spouses and parents, or those with
first names only.

Karen (wife of John James)
Oscar (father of Karen James)

This helps with keeping erroneous duplicates to a minimum. I don't have to
keep checking all my Karen and Oscar names when I have multiple
partially identified (I have lots of John, Jimmy, Moses, and Samuel)

If there are multiple marriages or parent groups (ie divorce, etc) I put
Morgan Xx Child 1 of 6. Where XX is the parent that would be most uncertain
 to someone else.

 Example:
 Ambrose Morgan had 6 children.
 2 by Mary
 3 by Jane
 1 by Sarah

I list them under Ambrose and proper mother group, and they show up as:
 Mary's Child 1 of 2 of 6
 Mary's Child 2 of 2 of 6
 Jane's Child 1 of 3 of 6

If I know sex or any other identifiers I put that too.
I have one family that has two sets of stillborn infants. They are listed
 as
 Twin Set 1 of 2 Child 1
 Twin Set 1 of 2 Child 2

I have been adding family details and have several families where my
source (a descendant of one of the families) has merely noted the number of
children, with no names. I am tempted to ignore the number, but realise
that it would be useful to note it with the family to help as a check in
the future. Is there any way to add a number to the family records that
will show up in the children display?

I tried adding an unknown gender child named Given: 4 children
(Colin+Karen) (for example), and wonder if anyone has tried this or
something like it and can report on its success or limitations. This
child would be over-written when the last child was added.

Re: [LegacyUG] e-mailing questionnaire

2014-04-24 Thread Jessica Morgan
You could put the questions in Google Docs as a spreadsheet, form fill, or
survey type. Then they type answers directly into it, and it saves in your
Drive. You can then retrieve the answers from multiple people. Or as a doc
and one person could fill out one doc.

Did that make sense?

I have a survey online for family to fill out with name, address, email,
phone, etc. to keep up with current info for reunion notifications.

[LegacyUG] Right way to add essays or excerpts from others to Family File

I have several essays written by others that I would like to include in
my family file somewhere, but I'm not certain the best location to put
them. Should I put them as sources, general notes, event notes, etc???

Example.. I have a two page essay written by H Caraway titled My Mother
Bertie Le Mills Fish 1906-1997. It is basically memories of H from her
childhood regarding her mother.

So what is best practice to document this?

Thanks.
