Re: [LegacyUG] Facebook

2019-01-09 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
I have been using Legacy Family Tree since version 4 and I have been a
subscriber to the legacyusergroup for a long time.  I enjoy reading the
Legacyusergroup emails, which I sometimes find useful.

I looked at the LUG FB a little, but did not find it useful and have not
looked at it recently.  I have over 300 Facebook Friends, people with
whom I share other interests.

I am thankful that the Legacy User Group does not have ads.  On google,
etc., I got so tired of seeing the same ads pop up, photos of clothes or
shoes I would never want to purchase, etc., so I finally opted out of
ads.    Still get a lot of ads on, but  fewer and better quality of ads.

It can't take that long to copy a post you just made to FB and paste
it into an email. No need to retype the entire post. The people on the
mailing list won't get the follow-ups by the group that are on the FB
page but there's no reason they can't get announcements or other
pertinent information about Legacy.

*Many email programs can thread a conversation for you.
*It's very easy to search emails - I think much easier than searching
in a FB group, esp if the emails have a good subject line.
*Sticky announcements are annoying - once I've read it, it's still
there in my face and I can't get rid of it. I can delete an email.
*If a mailing list is moderated, either members or posts, then you can
cut down on spam. In fact, I can't remember the last time I've seen
spam on any of the mailing lists I'm on. On FB, you have to wade
through all the ads that FB puts in a group. A moderated list can also
put a stop to a thread by rejecting posts
*Polls can be sent on mailing lists as well. I just responded to one
on a book list.
*I can choose to save emails that are of particular interest to me or
delete ones I have no interest in. They're all lumped together on FB.
*All the graphics on a FB page are annoying.
*Mailing lists *can* allow pictures. Up to the list owner.

I've been using FB for a few Christian groups and still not a fan - I
so wish they were mailing lists instead!

I used the AFN field for AFN numbers.
but I have not been using them recently.

Note: The Legacy Help file says:

*Add Number to End of All Names*

Select the type of number after names.  If you are displaying numbers

Re: [LegacyUG] MyHeritage - not free

2018-02-15 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
I was reviewing a lot of comments about MyHeritage on the Legacy User
Group  and ran across the comment Carrie Pillow wrote mentioning "you
can transfer your raw DNA to MyHeritage for free. You must have an
account with MyHeritage to do this but you can create a free account
which allows you to have a tree up to 250 people."

Sorry.  Be wary of anything "free" from MyHeritage.  My husband and I
first did autosomal testing with 23andMe in about 2013. They also had a
crude tool for entering family tree history.  I detested the clunky
format and did not enter much data on it. Later, 23andMe informed us
they were no longer going to support family tree data, and they had sent
our DNA and family tree data to MyHeritage.   That was in February of
2014.  I had previously opened an account on WorldVitalRecords, and in
February 2014, MyHeritage informed me that WorldVitalRecords had been
merged with MyHeritage,  so in February 2014, MyHeritage said they had
given us "a free empty MyHeritage account for one year, which is a gift
worth $119, for free,  and we would have access to World Vital Records
and My Heritage both.  The Premium Plus account will not renew
automatically.  By creating your family tree on our site, you will
automatically receive your matches for free. "

In February 2015, email from MyHeritage thanked me for purchasing an
annual bundle of data subscription plus PremiumPlus family site. You
have been charged US $99.95 ...We have upgraded our existing family site
Cramer Family Site to PremiumPlus.  I had to request a new password,
because I had not been using it and had not recorded the password.  The
next day, they sent another email starting with "An error occurred while
renewing your MyHeritage Data Subscription.  It was not possible to
extend your subscription and it expired. " They offered a MyHeritage
Data subscription that will cots US $71.40 for one year, instead of the
usual  $119.40.  About two weeks later I requested a new password again
and tried entering data again, but did not like the user interface.
Again in Feb 2015,  I requested a new password.  So I remember I put a
few photos on the tree, but I really did not like the data entry format.
That was about the last time I remember even looking at the MyHeritage
website, until I started noticing funny little orange icons turning up
on my  Legacy Family Tree on my desktop computer.

Apparently my desktop computer was getting messages from MyHeritage
asking me to verify something someone else had entered on their trees,
and smart matches found my entries, which I found very annoying, since
whenever I saw these messages, my mind was always focused on something
else far away.  I have been a subscriber to Ancestry.com for many years,
and I have been focusing on AncestryDNA and growing my trees on
Ancestry.com and on my Legacy Family Tree file,  and looking for my
1000+ living cousins on AncestryDNA, and how I am connected to them, and
also on FTDNA and 23andMe.  And I had no interest in working on the old
trees on MyHeritage.  And I never considered buying DNA analysis from My
Heritage.  But I noticed people on the Legacy Family Tree user group
talking about My Heritage DNA testing.

Unfortunately, a few days ago, Februrary 2018, I noticed an email from
MyHeritage saying I was charged $250.74.  This shocked me because  I
thought my subscription had expired.  I asked my husband to check
charges.  He had just paid it that morning.  He also found we had paid
$238.80 in 2016, etc..  Which was another shocker.  He immediately sent
an email cancelling the 2018 payment he had just made.  It took a couple
of years to look at 5 years of paper trail.  We appear to have have
charged over $750 for something I did not ask for in the first place
and did not like when I attempted to use it.  I have been using Legacy
Family Tree for over 15 years, since 2002, but, if Legacy Family Tree is
now owned by My Heritage, my first impulse is just to give up on genealogy.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sources not available to upload to FamilySearch

2016-04-27 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
I also have not been happy with how Family Search sources don't match
with other LDS systems or other sources. During the 2002 - 2007 time
period I spent countless hours researching my Finnish family, ordering
micro fiche from Salt Lake City, reading hand-written records in birth,
baptism, confirmation, marriage, and farm records, farm names and
numbers, etc. and recording sources with LDS microfilm numbers, and
noting variations in spelling of names; also searching the The
Genealogical Society of Finland database. Now, with the emphasis on
standardization, it appears that new duplicates are being created, and
I've seen at least one whole family group duplicated due to a variation
in the spelling of the name of the father. Very discouraging.

There are other ways with focus groups or tagging descendants but in

I couldn't just go back and make descendent charts for all my

There is probably a simple way that I am missing.

[LegacyUG] Need for listing AncestryDNA and 23andMe tests on Legacy DNA record screen

2015-01-24 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
The AncestryDNA autosomal test, as well as 23andMe should be listed on the
Legacy list of DNA tests.

Even if there is a problem recording the raw data in Legacy, more and more
people
will be using these tests, and we will need to be able to keep track of
what testing is done. It is important to be able to keep records of
the fact that an individual was tested, and the details of the testing.

The Legacy DNA record fields for Name of the test, Date of test, Haplogroup, Y
and mtDNA, check boxes
for private or top secret, and Notes field for the test will still be useful.
In the notes field, one can type specific details, like the name of the
person tested (as listed on the purchase of the test), customer number,
ID numbers of test record, who paid for the test, how much it cost,
date of purchase, where raw data for the test are located; how the raw
data was analyzed, etc, name of media file, and subsequent results of
having the test, such as matching various cousins, etc. Some of us are
paying for DNA tests for our immediate family members and also for
various cousins. We need a way to keep track of DNA records for each
individual in our Legacy database who has been tested, and to make note
of the implications for other individuals.

Re: [LegacyUG] Register for Webinar Wednesday - Find A Grave: the World's Largest Cemetery Database by Russ Worthington

2014-09-01 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
Cheryl,

I have been a contributor to Find A Grave for over seven years, creating
memorials for my family lines, ancestors and their descendants,
requesting transfer of some existing memorials to me for further work,
and otherwise trying to improve the data in FAG, by pointing out
duplicates and other errors that I run across. It is my impression that
the data in FAG is getting better and better as a function of time, as
more and more families are searching and entering data in FAG.

I use Find-A-Grave memorials to provide a simple format in my Legacy
Family Tree General Notes. I paste the memorial text at the top of the
General Notes field, where it is readily visible, and other General
Notes are below. This provides the basic information about the
individual whose grave has been recorded in FAG, and I can easily
compare it with what is in other fields of my Legacy family file. I
enter the FAG memorial number as part of the FAG Source Detail in my
Legacy db , and also copy the FAG memorial number into the Legacy USER
ID field. I currently can create a list of over 1400 individuals in my
main Legacy Family file who have FAG as a source.

On FAG memorials that I create and/or maintain, I add a biography based
on data documented in my Legacy family file and also add FAG family
links for graves of parents, spouse, children and siblings as I find them.
For FAG memorials that I do not manage, I suggest edits to the memorial
maintainer and provide additional data as appropriate, as I find it.
Whenever I notice that a FAG memorial has been updated by someone, I
review the changes, make any desirable changes in my Legacy file, and
move the older version of FAG memorial into my Legacy Research Notes.
In my experience, most changes usually are additional family grave
links, which is desirable.
I do revise bios on FAG memorials that I manage, based on new data that
I have found in various sources or based on new insights. I tend to
put a revision date on those bios.
Considering that most big FAG contributors are working from obituaries,
and they do not cite or keep their sources, and other big FAG
contributors are working from cemetery records or grave marker
transcriptions, we are fortunate to have the photographers photographing
grave markers, as described in the Legacy FAG Webinar, so we can read
names and dates that may not be the same as data entered by the FAG
memorial creator.

They are great! It is wonderful to be able to see what is in
FamilySearch for an individual and family and to see what is in my
Legacy database at the same time and to be able to see what is linked.
Looking forward to the up the update!
Thanks,
Pauline

If you are using the FamilySearch tools in Legacy, then this brief
announcement applies to you. If not, don't worry about it.

Minutes ago it appears that FamilySearch made some changes that
affected our FamilySearch tools in Legacy. The effect is that you will
not be able to see the FamilySearch data that you may have linked to.
We are working to provide an update to Legacy that will restore this
functionality. Watch this blog for the announcement of the free
update. In the meantime, probably don't use the FamilySearch tools in
 Legacy for now.

Ah...the wonderful world of changing technology

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestry findagrave

2014-06-17 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
I worked for an hour or more on Ancestry.com, searching for census
records for a family for 1900, 1910, etc. I could find records and copy
text about an individual, but I was not able to connect to the image of
census sheets. This would cause a reset. Then I would have to go back
to the browser and get back into Ancestry. So after trying several
census years, I decided to quit Ancestry and try again tomorrow.

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy and Windows 8

2013-10-17 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
Elaine,

This is not a Legacy problem; this is a Windows8 problem. Many people
found that the new Windows 8.0 tiled user interface did not work well
for some of the things they were used to doing with a computer. Many
users found it hard to find their ways around 8.0

You wrote your message on October 15. On Thursday, October 17,
Microsoft launched Windows 8.1. It addresses some of the biggest
problems users had with windows 8.0, which was released a year ago.
You might want to read about the changes in Windows 8.1 (free upgrade
for those using 8.0).

I personally did not upgrade to Windows 8.0, but my husband has Windows
8.0, and he is fine with it.
Good luck!

Yes. Definitely continue. Do not be discouraged by the current lack of
interest of your daughters or cousins. Continue adding every scrap of
data you find about family members, near and distant, especially details
that add life to your records.
I have historical sources, such as: The Great Meadow, Farmers and the
Land in Colonial Concord by Brian Donahue (2004) has detailed data about
various Hartwel family members. Google books brought up fascinating
data about individuals in various professions.

Re: [LegacyUG] War casualty

2012-05-06 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
Constance,

The standard phrase, Tablet of the Missing, used by the American
Battle Monuments Commission, does not convey much information.

I have a first cousin who died 7 September 1944 ; at sea, The
Philippine Islands, about ten miles north of Sindangan Point,
Mindanao. He is remembered at the Manila American Cemetery, which
spans 152 acres, and contains 17,206 graves. The Tablets of the Missing,
containing 36,285 names, are inscribed onrectangular limestone piers
within two large semicircular structures on a wide terrace In front of
the chapel.

The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial (77 acres), is dedicated
to the fallen, from the campaign of Sicily to the Liberation of Rome.
There is cenotaph honoring the dead, a burial ground with 7,860
headstones, and the names of 3,095 Missing are memorialized on the
interior walls of the chapel.

[LegacyUG] Legacy Research Guidance for Ancestry World Tree problem

2010-08-28 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
I have been using Legacy Family Tree since 2002, but I have never used
Legacy Research Guidance with any success.Today I noticed the
Research Guidance interface seems to have been improved in the current
version of Legacy, so I continued trying to test it to see how it
works. Searching on my father-in-law, whose records I know well, it
brought up a menu with 6 linked databases, and I browsed in three of
them before running into a problem when I tried to save.

I was in Legacy Research Guidance, clicked on the Ancestry World Tree
linked database on the menu bar, and a dialog box came up and asked for
a Ancestry.com password, which I was able to provide, and then I
continued searching, but when I decided to try out saving a record, it
wanted to save to a tree on Ancestry.com. I could not find a way to
save to my Legacy Family File, which was open, on the desktop PC that I
was using, and through which I had used Legacy Research Guidance to get
to this record. It would seem reasonable to be able to save to the
Legacy family file that is in use while using Legacy Research Guidance.
Is that not how it is supposed to work?

I hesitate to ask a question about this complicated topic, but, having
never gotten this far with Legacy Research Guidance, I thought there
might be some simple answer that would be well known to those LUG users
who use the Legacy Research Guidance feature, and that I should ask if
there was something simple that I had missed doing.

I agree. It is a citation nightmare. I have subscribed to Ancestry
since 2002 and also used Legacy Family Tree since 2002, long before I
ever heard of Evidence Explained or the Legacy SourceWriter, but, I was
always annoyed at the way Ancestry.com is put in the first element of
the source citations they provide. I consider Ancestry.com as a
Repository. I certainly give credit for their indexing, which is
frequently flawed, but I definitely distinguish between indexes and
digital images. As you have shown, it is definitely challenging to try
to go from Ancestry.com citations to the Legacy 7 source writer
templates. I am tending to use the Basic format for citations.

It also seems impossible to go from Legacy source writer template
produced citations and put them in a Family Tree on Ancestry. Until
recently, I mostly avoided the member trees on Ancestry. Currently I am
building a small family tree on Ancestry, by entering names and dates
that I already have recorded in Legacy for each individuals, and then
within my Ancdestry tree, I click to have Ancestry search for historical
sources, and then save the Ancestry source citation to the individual in
the tree with a click. My plan is to export the tree from Ancestry and
open it in Legacy and then compare with my original file, to see how
this works.

I have finally decided to start my subcription to Ancestry.com, but
have hit a bit of a barrier out of the gate--my old friend, citations.

Ancestry is very good at telling you exactly what the citation should
be, but matching that to Evidence Explained--or the Source Writer
template--seems a bit tricky at times. I'm working with the Federal
 census mortality schedules now.

It appears that the mortality schedules on Ancestry come from a
variety of NARA microfilms, depending on which state the information
is coming from. It appears, unlike the Federal censuses for which
each year cites a single microfilm reference (e.g. the 1860 census
refers to M653), the source of the source here changes depending on
the state. But I see no Legacy SourceWriter template.

I also note that the Ancestry.com citation doesn't seem to match
Mills, or Legacy. Take the 1860 population schedule. Legacy,
modeling Mills, says the citation should look like this:

1860 U.S. census, Monroe County, New York population schedule; digital
 images, *Ancestry.com* (http://www.ancestry.com); citing National
Archives and Records Administration microfilm M653.

 But Ancestry says:

Ancestry.com. *1860 United States Federal Census* [database on-line].
Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2009. Images reproduced
by FamilySearch. Original data: 1860 U.S. census, population
schedule. NARA microfilm publication M653, 1,438 rolls. Washington,
D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.

Citation junkies who use Ancestry, how do you reconcile this in your
mind? Just two different systems? And, most importantly, how do you
cite nonpopulation schedules given the absence of a template in
Legacy? For example, I'm looking at an image of the 1860 Mortality
Schedule for Lycoming County, PA. Ancestry lists:

 Citation #1:
 Ancestry.com. *U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1885*
[database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc.,
2010. A portion of this collection was indexed by Ancestry World
 Archives Project contributors.

 Original data citations:
 General:
United States. *Federal Mortality Census Schedules, 1850-1880
(formerly in the custody of the Daughters of the American Revolution),
and Related Indexes, 1850-1880.* T655, 30 rolls. National Archives and
 Records Administration, Washington D.C.

 For PA, it then lists:
United States. *Non-Population Census Schedules for Pennsylvania,
1850-1880: Mortality*. M1838, 11 rolls. National Archives and Records
 Administration, Washington D.C.

The particular record I'm looking at appears to have come from roll
M1838, so I suppose that is the citation I should use. I'm not sure
when the generic U.S. citation would apply? Perhaps some records are
from T655 and others from M1838.

I *think* the right citation (Mills style) is:
 1860 U.S. census, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania mortality schedule;
 digital images, *Ancestry.com* (http://www.ancestry.com); citing
National Archives and Records Administration microfilm M1838.

What do you think? And, again, most importantly how do you cite this
in Legacy? Use the census template and overrride it? Something else?

 Thanks!!

 Scott

Dick,

Perhaps I have not understood, the entire thread, but, if you are
referring to the Detail Information, Item of Interest field, you can
type, entry for name of individual, Death Certificate..,#. I like
to type the name of the individual as it appears on the certificate.

Has anyone else raised to the list?

Re: [LegacyUG] Viewing PDF and Word files in Reports

2010-05-17 Thread Pauline B. Cramer
JLB,
For those of us who are struggling with learning how to get our data out
of Legacy and print something to give our families, this kind of
discussion is essential to our future use of Legacy.

Many people are attempting to do various things that don't work very
well. Other people are not using the publishing center, etc. Others
are muddling around with details of sources and citation and photos,
with no real vision of what we might be able to produce with it that
anyone else would want to look at.

The obvious solution is for the Millennia Corp. to provide a better user
manual to explain the output capabilities of Legacy and how to use the
report and publication features.

It seems a solution to this problem is outside the scope of Legacy and
therefore outside the scope of a Legacy discussion group. The linear
nature of a genealogy database is diametrically opposed to the nature of
history which is circular and tangential. Try a wiki.

This is something I have wrestled with as well. I have family lore
stories, military records, and other assorted documents in PDF or Word
format that I'd like to insert into a book. Place Holder pages
are fine, except you can only put them between chapters in the book.
I'd like the story/document to immediately follow that person's
information, not at the end of his/her generation's chapter, or worse
 - in an appendix at the end of the book.

My current method is: After creating the book in PDF format with
Legacy, I can place these special pages anywhere with my PDF editing
program. The problem with this is my added pages are not covered by
the Legacy-generated Table of Contents or Index. My current solution
for page numbering is to individually number my special pages as a, b,
c, etc. E.G., the special pages following page 126 would be 126a,
126b, 126c, etc. Finally, I rewrite the Table of Contents to include
my added pages. A royal pain in the neck, but doable. Even more of a
pain when making custom books for different family members where the
paging might be a bit different. Or, if I add a new person or
information - it's back to square one!

If anyone has a better or easier method, I'd like to hear it.

It would be wonderful if Legacy could find a way to insert Place
Holder pages anywhere within a book. (FYI - I did submit that idea
as a suggestion some time ago.)

PDF and Word files can be attached and viewed in Legacy (actually, you are
viewing them in your PDF reader or Word program; you are just opening them
 from Legacy).

The only way I know to print them, however, would be to print them from
your PDF program or Word. While Publishing Center won't print them
directly, you can insert a Place Holder where you want the report to be
placed in your book. If your attached file is 3 pages, tell the Place
 Holder you want 3 pages.

You won't be able to imbed them in the middle of a page, but they can serve
 as a nice Appendix.

If you want the information imbedded in the middle of your data about an
individual, best to copy and paste from Word into a Legacy event or note.

You are mis-understanding what Unspecified means. It is not an event.
It is just a place for lazy people (no offense intended) to assign a
citation if they don't want to get specific. The 2nd citation you added
is also Unspecified ... the screen just doesn't display it when it is
identical to the line above. Same thing happens when you assign a 2nd
 citation to any other field.

I can live with lazy. If it wasn't for lazy people no shortcuts would be
found. In fact it's the basis of efficiency (provided the required
 outcome is met).
Ok. I understand what Legacy is doing. it is just that it is in a column
headed Events - hence I referred to the unspecified event.
