RE: [LegacyUG] Tiny tafel
Paula, In the early days of computerized genealogy a tiny tafel was used to match one family with another. It uses a combination of surnames and Soundex along with some dates to match one family tree to another. Oh no – showing my age here … I remember them well, particularly with our old Bulletin Boards when it was so important to save every character as you paid for every second online! That was when we used offline Readers for our prehistoric emails! I guess that means that you're too young! vbg Jane, if you explain exactly what data you want in your report, you'll probably find that Legacy definitely offers options that will meet your needs. I looked for an old TT file but couldn't find one on my system - even in the archives. Found an example on Wikipedia ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiny_Tafel Regards ... Re: [LegacyUG] Tiny tafel
It is just a list of ancestors that one can use if there are a lot of ancestors and you are checking them against other lists of surnames. A method of providing a compact way of describing a family database so that the information can be scanned visually or by a computer. A Tiny Tafel only lists surnames with Soundex codes, plus the locations and dates of the beginning and end of that surname. First names, births, marriages, deaths, etc. are not included in a tiny tafel. Jane On 12/26/2014 7:44 PM, Paula Ryburn wrote: I've never heard of this Tiny Tafel. You are probably right, and I know they seem to be out of favor, but it does seem a helpful thing to have an alphabetical list of surnames with dates and locations appended. Such as when I see a list of surnames that someone has that I may want to check against my own. Thank you for the instructions. The closest would be an Ancestor Book Report. We do have a suggestion on the list for the option to change the generation numbering on the Ancestor chart in Legacy to Ahnentafel numbers or other numbers. I haven't seen TinyTafel used for years. I remember when they were all the rage. There used to be a free utility for generating them but I don't think that's even around anymore. Yes, such a list would be helpful, in some cases. In others, not-so-much. It was simply too broad when done to spec and too large when done so it was useful to the originator. If I find the program, you want a copy? Cheryl, OK, thanks anyhow. No big deal; I just thought it might be handy. I can get pretty close with the farthest back ancestor and choosing the column options.
