Re: [LegacyUG] Merging files - " to be merged " getting bigger ??

2018-12-29 Thread Cathy Pinner
Gender isn't always rightly assigned. I have an ancestor Francis Guppy.
I would want to consider whether a Frances Guppy may be the same person
even if one was marked male and one female.

abt 1860 isn't an exact date.

it's best to use default settings in merge until you understand them
better and then vary them as you like.

It's all to do with how careful you want to be.

Still having problems. These are some of the comments I am getting:

*merging: left is different sex to right - these are two totally
different people so why were they brought up to be merged ?

* missing birth/christening dates or dates are not exact - both had -
Abt 1860 so why did they come up to be merged ?

* does one select all the settings in the " Normal Duplicate Search "
page.

Hi Valerie,

1.  The number of 'duplicates' has increased, because those merges
you've done have enabled Legacy to see more people who might be
duplicates, and have added them to the list for you to consider.

3.  The total number of people has decreased (2594 + 2540 = 5134)
because you have made some merges already.

Hope this helps.  :-)

1. I have created a new file and imported 2594 people and then
imported another 2540 from another file and started the merge process.
I used all the settings as suggested. Now I have started the merge and
as I say " merge right into left  " the number of merges still to be
done have gone from 69 dulicates to 479. WHY ??

2. Also I can see that one of the problems is age at death so I want
to not use this criteria anymore but I cannot get back into the
beginning settings to delete this age at death problem

3. I now have 4945 people

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging files

2017-07-09 Thread Brian Kelly
I also suggest you read the help about intellishare. That is a feature
built into Legacy which will simplify your merging since both files
started out the same. Intellishare will automatically merge all the3
duplicates whose information is exactly the same. That will reduce your
workload to sorting out only those who have differing information
(presumably these are the ones you made changes to in one or the other file.

There is an article in the help on sharing your research which explains
the steps needed to merge two files using the intellishare option.

Before you start I would create a new file with a new name and import
both copies into that file. That will preserve your originals in case
you make a major error during the merge/cleanup. If you do, you can
delete the working file and start over by importing the files again.

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging files

2015-01-10 Thread Crauswell_Verchio
Yes, Legacy has a very detailed and helpful merging feature. I suggest
that you create a Test file from your main family file, run a merge and
pay special attention how all the different settings work best. Be sure
to review the new file thoroughly. Run File maintenance, etc. If all
is well, you have a new merged main family file. If not, delete it and
run another test choosing different settings in the merge features.
For the last several years, I have chose to enter new people from gedcom
or other files one at a time. I find that to be more rewarding as I
'get to know' all the new people!
Wish you well,
Elizabeth Crauswell Verchio
If you ever meet a Crauswell, say Hi! for me, as they are family.

Re: [LegacyUG] Merging files

2015-01-10 Thread Cathy Pinner
Hi Jane,

When importing information from a gedcom into your main family file,
first open it in a new Legacy file and check that it - or the part you
want - meets your standards. They usually require locations to be edited
to your standards. I also edit sources as the sources aren't my sources
until I've checked them so I change them so they read Joe Bloggs citing
xyz Census etc.

Then if you are going from a Legacy file to a Legacy file, use the
export to a Legacy file and don't go back to a gedcom.

Then when you import the file, use the option to start RINs at a much
higher number than the number of people in your file so that when you
come to merge, you can see easily at a glance who came from which file
and which possible duplicates are being presented from within your
original file. When merging always merge the larger RIN into the smaller
RIN especially if stable RINs are important to you.

The merge in Legacy is pretty good using the default options but you may
want to tweak them and the process is worth practising so do make sure
you have backups before you start so you can revert and start over when
you have more experience. Do check sources for events.

Do mark people who aren't duplicates as not duplicates so they'll never
be presented again. If you are confident you don't have duplicates in
your main file, you can do this quickly without heaps of checking.

When you've finished the merge, use the Renumber RINS and MRINs on the
Tools menu to compact the RINs/MRINs in the final file.

If you know that the file you are bringing in has only a one person/one
couple overlap with your existing file, it's quicker and easier to use
Manual merge for those people.

If looking at the file you've been sent, you find it a mess in terms of
standards and sources, it's really quicker in the long run to enter them
one by one. It took me ages to sort out the mess from rashly importing a
file from a second cousin years ago. She sounded as if she was doing
proper, verifiable research. However after importing the file, I found
she was really bent on proving a way out theory. If she has the proof,
she's never provided it. I've only imported one file since following the
above guidelines - which reminds me it's time I checked some of the
sources again as I can probably see more of the originals online now.
I'm fussy about my family file so I mostly enter people one by one
researching them as I go even if using someone else's file as a guide.

RE: [LegacyUG] Merging files

Debbie:

Folly! What is gained by vacuuming thousands of unreviewed records from
Ancestry into your database? How will you correct the data entry errors and
inconsistencies? And will you omit the individual notes or simply plagarize?

At the very least, you should open the GEDCOM in a separate Legacy file and
review/clean up what you see in the Master Lists prior to considering a merge.
Otherwise you could easily end up with an unmitigated mess. If the people in
that GEDCOM have any meaning for you, their records should deserve at least a
brief review (roughly 1,000 hours in my estimation), or else why include them?

I have a Legacy file with 18,176 people in it and also have an Ancestry.ca tree
which has been having other users submit updated info etc. I have downloaded
the GEDCOM file from Ancestry and now was wondering how the best way to tackle
merging two files which could have 14,000 duplicate individuals in it.

Your help is appreciated.
