sound
Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 10:04:27 +0100 From: Richard Munson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: sound I have a libretto ct70, p120, 32mb ram, running win 98se. I cannot get sound files to play cleanly, they stutter and pause, apparently in time with the disk activitiy light, now I know there are people using similar machines as mp3 players which is what I am trying to do. Any advice would be very welcome. ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **
Re: 20GB experience + a few questions
Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 11:55:00 -0700 (PDT) From: David Chien [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: 20GB experience + a few questions How can I find where Libretto hibernates before I loose any data??? One easy way is to get a program that'll write a series of 1's to the HD from just after oh, let's say, the first 2GB of HD to the end of the HD. You then hibernate, then run a HD hex editor over the entire space looking for anything other than pure 1's. Then, simply create a hibernation space that size and a couple MB bigger just in case. 2 Another weird problem happened to me which may explain my first problem. I was urged to get some data from a friend's desktop so I hibernated Win2k, went from hibernation. The files were not there! Actually I suppose that Win2k keeps all filetables in memory and on some occasions may restore them to drive after standby/hibernation. Can anybody confirm this? No idea here. But I'd start with shutting down the entire OS first before I'd pull any HD. Not a very bright idea to pull a hibernated HD unless you'd want a messed up HD. 3 I am going to use System Commander to switch from Win2k to Win98. Are there any hidden problem to ghost in this particular case? Ghost should be able to backup the entire partition w/o any problems. It doesn't care because system commander works on the MBR, outside of the primary partition either OS resides in. 4 What is the better choice Ghost or Drive Image? I have one point for Drive Image: it can verify integrity of allocation tables of all drives before dumping partition. For myself, I still go with Ghost. It has never failed, does the job, and works over the parallel port just in case I have no working floppy or CD-ROM drives in my PC (just as long as I can boot and get Ghost running that is..). However, I have used both to backup and restore HDs and they work just the same in the important aspects, but to me, it seems Ghost is more intuitive to me and works faster. Both have added the latest feature of going directly to CD-RW drives, but I haven't yet tested this feature. Did anyone managed to save partition directly to NTFS disk? DI docs say it I wouldn't think this to be likely, even with any 3rd party NTFS enabler. d =) = adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Get rid of all startup programs, virus checkers, TSR's, and other background programs first before testing. You can disable/remove them temporarily. All of these will bog the system down and gobble up RAM. If you don't have enough RAM due to too many programs running at once, it's either a memory upgrade or fewer running programs. (or a faster Libretto) 2. Use Winamp. It works just fine and should on yours. 3. Load up a MP3 file and play on this Windows running only configuration. It should run w/o problems. 4. Run system monitor in the Start-Program_accessories-system tools folder (or load it up in Control Panels - add/remove programs - windows programs). Find out if you have at least 70% CPU free time when you are doing absolutely nothing at all on the Libretto. If there are other programs running , it'll bring the free CPU time down and you'll have to kill those programs. 5. Try defragging the HD. d =) = adorable toshiba libretto The latest news and information for the Toshiba Libretto owner. http://www.silverace.com/libretto/ __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: Toshiba parts in Tokyo?
Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2000 06:10:52 +0900 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Toshiba parts in Tokyo? I have not visited computer stores for some time, and I never looked for a replacement screen. A new replacement screen would probably be also expensive here in Tokyo. That is just my guess. I expect that only Toshiba will have them new. Some upgrade/repair shops may have the screens from failed units. Or you can buy a failed unit yourself. Ask the mailing list if someone has a failed unit to sell. Libretto [EMAIL PROTECTED] But first try to find out from Toshiba for sure which units have the screen compatible with 50CT. If screens from models 20 and 30 are compatible, you may find those to be cheaper. I have no connection with Germany. BigFoot provides free email forwarding. When I could not get [EMAIL PROTECTED] I tried BigFoot.de and it was available. Cheers, Aidan Original Message Subject: Toshiba parts in Tokyo? Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 00:06:55 +1000 From: "Joe Hovel" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi! I saw an old message from you (about memory replacement) and wondered if any of the shops in Tokyo (or elsewhere in Japan) still stock screens for Toshiba Libretto? I need a screen for a model 50CT but am fairly sure that the 60 and 70 models have the same LCD component. My screen is cracked, but the backlight still works. Toshiba Australia have one in stock, but want nearly twice as much as the value of a second-hand Libretto is worth! (about US $ 550!) I can't afford that and if I could, I would buy a used later model. Please let me know if you have any sources or ideas. Cheers, Joe Hovel Australia (PS: I noticed your German e-mail address - what's the connection?) ** http://libretto.basiclink.com - Libretto mailing list http://libretto.basiclink.com/archive - Archives http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/portable/faq.html - FAQ ---UNSUBSCRIBE--- mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]?subject=cmd:unsubscribe UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST-- Use above but add DIGEST to the subject line... **

Re: Blank Screen
Date: 22 Oct 00 19:16:10 EDT From: Tom Manson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: Blank Screen Hi folks, Those of you who are interested, I have some minor news to report and some questions (for those of more experience with the Libretto than myself). To recap and provide some background for the following, my Libretto (50ct) has had a screen failure such that the screen flashes at me when it is first turned on, and does not show any signs of displaying anything until the next time it is turned on. I can put the Lib on the docking station and plug a monitor into it and the monitor works fine, so it is the LCD-related circuitry that is at fault. Now here's what's cookin' lately: I disassembled the screen enclosure (some of you probably saw the graphics I uploaded to the list), and measured the voltage of the "backlight" power supply." [I put that in quotes, because what I found doesn't realy indicate a backlight as much as it does an electro-luminescence circuit or charge-related device.] Some one told me to expect 50 - 150 volts (I didn't recall if they specified ac or dc), so not knowing the expected polarity, I set the meter I had for 600vdc. At first the meter dipped below 0 regardless of the way I applied the probes, thus indicating an ac voltage (no wonder the wires were colored white and blue instead of red and black). So I switch the meter to 600vac and got a more accurate reading, at least it showed the true significance of the circuit. It pegged the meter! I would assume that the actualy output voltage fo that circuit is around 1000vac! I can't measure anything above 600v without rigging up some kind of a voltage divider circuit. So, unless the output is supposed to be dc and I have a failed rectifier or two, that power output looks good to me. The next step in the process then is determining what is actually bad and in need of replacement. It appears to me that the little circuit card identified as "FL INBERTER" [sic] on the left edge of the screen (I don't have the part number handy, but it is on the drawing and parts list that I got somewhere online - and from whence came the name I quoted above) is the faulty part since it appears to house both the "backlight" and other signal decoding electronics. The next question (assuming that is the faulty part), is where can I get one of these little guys and how much will it cost. I guess another question I would ask is is it somehow matched to the LCD screen such that the screen needs to be replaced along with the circuit card. I can't believe that the latter is true, but there might be some trimming required once the two are mated. If it isn't the little FL INBERTER, (in other words if the fault is in some other LCD circuitry located out of range of what I could see) I'm not going to know that. If you guys happen to now if and where other LCD circuitry is housed, please let me know. Any assistance along these lines would be apprecited, whether it be opinion or knowledge.
