Loading

CD-ROM drive? To install W98? I have the W98 installation directory on my

I have. But the image has all of the Tosh and some other hardware drivers.
Maybe just going with the basic W98 installation with nothing else might be
better. Reason??? The CD-ROM drivers would be useful to install XP from
Win98 though.

True. single colour background, not an image. An image takes up around a

Really? I occasionally make a bmp graphic from photos I've taken or friends

I'm not quite sure how, but somehow 'm sure I'll find a way to manage life

 If anyone has any suggestions for other tweaks to speed things up,
that'd

Er, install something other than MS bloatware?
Hey... It's like Harley Davidsons UK/Europeans seem to be so infatuated

 And I've forgotten about CPUIdle, Waterfall, and Neil's favorite tiny
CPU
 idling software, amnHLT. With the L100 CPU clicked from 166 up to 266,
I'm
 definatley going to be needing one of those in the heat of the summer.

I don't think so - W2K and it's descendents actually have an idle cycle
that
stops the processor as amnHLT do.
Okay... Good to know. Thanks for the tips Neil.

 Argentina! I remember your post about this from last summer or fall I
think
 Leonardo. That was the first I'd read about the pen. I suppose I could
 have done a lot more work in the future if I'd bought a soldering iron and
 solder to replace what I've got stored a half a continent away... but this
 just seemed like too much fun!

 This was a Chemtronics pen made just north of me.

   Does anyone have any tips on using this conductive pen to connect the

 coating
   off the solder if it exists, and then just paint a trail between the
two

Few things I learned in Texas:

- add some more heatsink grease to the heatpipe connected to the CPU
- make sure that the upper PCMCIA port is open if there is extended disk
activity (like for editing video)
- make sure that all screws are tight for better heat transfer, especially
undek the ketboard
- blow air on the L100 with a fan or if too hot, right into the PCMCIA slot
with an aquarium aerator. I am planning to use a shell of a PCMCIA card to
make some adapter for that.

Hi Konrad,

Heatsink pipe? I'm not quite sure what that is, unless it's just the
heatsink. I haven't pulled a MB in sometime, and then only in my L50 L70,
not the L100. And I really hadn't even thought about checking with the
manual on the procedure until you mentioned this. I wonder if there might
any special considerations to be aware of before I proceed.

- make sure that the upper PCMCIA port is open if there is extended disk
activity (like for editing video)

Okay... then in Texas, you're dealing with the heat from the ambient air
temperature that the system will be exposed to just as I will be here in
Florida. Had you clocked up to 266? I wonder if there would be
sufficiently less less heat generated at 233 to make a better option at some
point.

Has anyone done the modification to 233? It looks like it may actually
entail de-soldering a component?  Xin's website doesn't get into just what's
involved.  David's site just says:

Attach BF1 (pin 185) and BF2 (pin 184) to Vcc (positive voltage/Vcc).

But the photo on Xin's site shows 2 Xs which I assume means breaking 2
connections, and connecting another set of solder points.

I guess I'll find out when I'm in there. But I'd better hit Radio Shack and
pick up some heastsink grease before I start.

Thanks Konrad.

[LIB] Toshiba MK4018GAS 40GB HDD

Colin,

I wonder if you're still reading the list. (Actually I'm wondering if the
majority of the Librettoratti have jumped ship at this point.)

I'm considering getting one of these Toshiba MK4018GAS 40GB HDDs, as I see
them for sale on Pricewatch for as little as $112USD now with shipping.

Could you or someone else report back on the performance of this drive as
compared with similar drives available at this point. I'm a huge fan of
most anything Toshiba builds, and the drives of theirs I've owned have been
fantastic

Thanks,

Matt

Oh.. The overclocking of the L100 to 266MHz went like a charm. The system
is so responsive at this point that I could actually be tempted back to W98,
or maybe go with W2k if I find WXP a bit too sluggish.

From: Colin Verot [EMAIL PROTECTED]

hi.
I'm still looking for a 'quiet' bigger drive (I still have the std 600M
(was it?) in there). I did swap a 6G 9mm drive for a 2G 8.4mm but it is
too noisy (for me) so I didn't use it. (I sometimes take the Libby
camping .. well I take the family as well but the Libby is part of the
family .. g and the big drive could be hard halfway down the campsite,
whereas the std one was pretty silent?)
The new Toshiba serie is great. Quite hot drives, but silent.
I bought this one on eBay one month ago : 40GB 2.5 Super Slimline (9.5mm)
HDD - MK4018GAS (HDD2170)

Here are more details :
* 40GB capacity
* Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motor drive
* 9.5mm High
* 12ms Average Seek Time
* ATA-5 Interface
* 100MB/sec  Transfer Rate
* 2,048KB Buffer
* 300,000 MTTF Hours
I eventually payed it £79.00.

Well, I haven't been using it that much. I use my 110ct everyday, and my
work is too critical, so I kept the original HD. But I just bought on
eBay a very nice 100ct 'with loads of extras', which I will receive
tomorrow, and will be dedicated to tests, fun... I guess I'll use the
40GB then.

The eBay auction was by the way :
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=3403704588
Any comments on the 'extras' are welcome:
1.   	Actiontec PCMCIA 56K V90 Fax/Modem
2. Belkin PCMCIA USB Busport Mobile
3. Armacom PCMCIA 24x CDROM Drive
4. 	Armacom PCMCIA ZIP100 drive
I did bid very quickly, and didn't have the time to check if it is good
stuff, if there is some DOS drivers for the CD-Rom...

Could you or someone else report back on the performance of this drive

This drive has some 'fluid system'. It's eventually very silent (I have
some noisy IBMs...). It got hot when I installed things, or backup stuff
on it, but I haven't tested it enough to say how it's like on a normal use.

it's always good to get a few fidderenf opinions. With the L100 clocked to

[LIB] LAN cards

I am looking to upgrage my 10Mb PCMCIA lan card (3COM Etherlink III) with
a 10/100 card, and would appreciate any suggestions/experiences from
Libretto users who are running Linux.

Linux drivers are a must, and one of those neat units that don't
require a dongle (XJACK) would be good.

Digby,

I've had no problems with a Linksys PCMLM56 10/100 Network/56k Modem combo,
which works fine on both my 50, 70, and Portege 7020 - so it works on both
type 1 and 2 PCMCIA slots. Got it from Morgan IIRC.

(If you have a type 2 slot (100 and later I think) I'm presently recommending
the linksys 802.11B 11Mb radio network card and base station - cost me around
$170 last week in the states. Works fine in both windows and linux (M9).

Duh, forgot to say - no drivers required for linux, it's all in the PCMCIA

end - no dongles.
