Libretto L1?

I think one of the reasons there is not much discussion about the L1 on this list is
that it would be hard to truly classify the L1 as a Libretto, size-wise. It's more
like a regular notebook. It is not very interesting to me for that reason.
Too bad they didn't retain the same size or slightly smaller than the 100/110 series.
No one at Toshiba asked *me* about it... grin.

I have a contact whose Lib 50 has now got a cracked screen, and
he is looking for another Libretto.

If anyone has one (will consider any model) that they are looking to
  sell, I am interested.

And (I know this is as likely as William Hague being the next UK
Prime Minister) if anyone has a Lib 50/60/70 that has broken down
but whose screen is OK, I am VERY interested.

  Please let me know.

Hi Andy and all,

I just got a ff1100 from eBay and it arrived yesterday. I bought the 64mb ram upgrade
and a bigger IBM drive too. Some of the differences from the 110 are:
266 processor
128 mb ram
only 1 PCMCIA card slot (on left now)
1 SmartMedia card slot
1 usb
larger jacks for mic and headphones
remote control (detatchable wired, not wireless)
ac power port is also on left side now

The extra ram is one of the biggest reasons I upgraded from my 110, though the 1100
has some really neat other features too, like a built-in smart media slot and a
camera. I think the mouse buttons work better too. I miss the docking station
already though. I think there must have been some people from Toys r Us on the
development team. Will post info as I get more familiar with it, all documentation is
in Japanese (yipes).

Looks like more of a Portage than a Libretto. Over 10 wide!

As someone said recently:
The largest Power of Libretto is the Smallest size but Toshiba has lost it.
The new model cannot beat Sony's Vaio picturebook.

I was hoping for something the same size as a 110 or even a little smaller, oh well...

I replaced the hard disk. That took care of the HDC error.

BTW, I ran a utility on the old drive about 1 week before it failed called 'SpinRite
5.0. It is a program that subjects the drive to worst-case read/write scenarios over
about an 8 hour timeframe in an attempt to find any weakness before they might become
a problem. Kind of like Norton Disk Doctor or Scandisk on steroids.
I am wondering if anyone out there has ever heard of SpinRite damaging older (or any)

I had exactly the same on a Libretto 110.

Subject: ct50 video ram - a word of warning

  Eyup,

You may recall messages here discussing a vertical stripe problem on the
display of a CT50 that weren't due to faulty connectors or cabling. The
giveaway is that the fault is also visible on the external monitor
connection, and windows may drop the video mode to 16 colours (though this
is hard to see with the screen nasties!)

I've had the machine in question, and the fault was due to solder joints
cracking on the video ram. This ram is situated on the *bottom* of the
board, under the protective plastic visible in the pcmcia slot. It's also
  right at the outside edge.

Although the machine in question has had a rough life, it looks as if this
area is sensitive to board movement in the same way that the main ram is
sensitive to fat disc drives being inserted.

So have a care while inserting pcmcia cards, guys and gals...repair is not
easy without specialist tools, and not guaranteed with them...

  Cheers,

  Neil

Screens

Subject: Screens

It is like having the best of both worlds though, with the full-size keyboard, monitor
and mouse when I'm at my desk. And the LCD screen doesn't get any hours on it this way
as it is blanked automatically when using the external monitor port or closing the lid.

I've used the 100 and 110's as my only computers using the 2 kinds of port replicators
(docks) ever since the 100 first came out. I use the PS/2 port for the keyboard and
the serial port for the mouse when using the non-intelligent dock. The monitor-out
port works very well on both docks. The enhanced dock doesn't work very well with my
110 for some reason. So much for enhancements.

What I have learned using W95 on the 100 and W98SE on the 110 is that neither likes
the suspend, resume, or any other shortcut to undocking. They ultimately result in
having to reset the machine, if not after the first cycle, surely after a few times.
The only thing that I've found that works reliably time after time is simply to shut
down the computer prior to undocking, then go through the whole normal rebooting
process again once you have taken it out of the dock. This is kind of a pain though
and I'd appreciate any tips you all could offer on this topic. I'm using BIOS 7.30 on
my 110 with W98SE if that makes any difference.

About how many hours is a 110CT screen good for? Never gave it any
  thought
until now.

Depends on what conditions you use it in. About 1000-5000 hours for most
  LCD
panels before the light diminishes to 50% brightness, which you can then
replace. The LCD panel itself will last decades if not exposed to extreme
temperatures and if it's not exposed to direct sunlight for hours on end
  (any
and all direct sunlight exposure of LCD anything - watches, laptops, etc -
  will
eventually result in darkening and failure of the display.)

Subject: 110 enhanced port replicator problem

I'm having a funny problem with an enhanced port replicator that I
just bought. I exchanged it once, but the new one does the same thing.
However, a slightly older one that I have access to works fine.

Often when I attempt to power on the Libretto in the dock the power
light comes on but the disk light does not, and the system just sits
there for as long as I have cared to wait. It doesn't even put up
the Toshiba screen (which normally comes after one or two blinks of
the disk light.) The reset button has no effect unless I first power
down the dock. With power removed from the dock, the reset button causes
the system to display the Toshiba screen (without the picture of the
dock) and come up. The reset button itself also often provokes the hang
if the dock is powered on.

The problem seems to come in several levels of intensity. At first I
though it might be heat related, but sometimes it works hot and fails
when cool. When the system is being most cooperative several power cycles
will work, but a reset will often hang. When it is being less cooperative
only one in several power cycles will work without hanging and every reset
will hang unless the power to the dock is off. Sometimes the Toshiba screen
with dock picture is corrupt with extra red pixels here and there, and
"Starting Windows 98" comes up as "arting Windows 98." Usually once DOS
or Windows is running everything seems to be fine, but sometimes the Windows
screen becomes corrupt and Windows hangs (even here powering down the dock
seems to unhang Windows, though it crashes soon thereafter).

The two new docks that display these problems have serial numbers beginning
with X8. The older one that works perfectly no matter how many times I
reset it, power-cycle it, or leave it running for hours has a serial
number beginning with 98. The Libretto by itself never shows any such
problems. I have tried updating the Libretto BIOS to several versions
including 8.00, but it has not helped.

Has anyone seen anything like this? Could the newer docks be somehow
slightly incompatible with an "older" 110? (It can't be much older as
neither the computer nor the dock was made for too long.) I don't know
to what extent the computer's internal bus is extruded out through the
expansion connector, but it almost feels like a bus timing issue.

I vaguely remember something that suggested that the dock has some non-volatile
configuration memory. The note talked about changing a dock's identification
number so Windows could associate two different hardware configurations with
two different docks. Unfortunately, I can't find this note anymore. If there
is non-volatile memory, perhaps it is somehow misconfigured?

David,

Check out the 2 models in the new Fujitsu LX series. Looks like the best Libretto
replacements to date. Drawbacks are slightly larger footprint than the Libretto,
Crusoe processor and weird screen sizes. The only other option in this size class is
the Casio Fiva. There are some 'issues' with these machines too of course. Fiva has
an 800 x 600 format screen and the Japanese model has 96MB ram available. Oh for a
perfect world...

I just cannot bring myself to make the move to anything bigger in size yet, but if I
was going to right now, one of these is probably what I would go to. My 110CT is
seeming awfully slow these days...

This Portege, looks great for my wife, but NO CD-ROM?

Oh come off it! A libretto owner complaining about not having a
  CD-ROM?

Actually, my 70CT is too slow and I also want a portege, but I don't
quite think that this is enough of an upgrade. I'm looking at the 3490
  (700? mhz, 128-256 MB, 20 GB, 1024x768, integrated 56K LAN, 3.4? lbs,
fast IRda, USB, $2400 direct from Toshiba). Does anyone have any
experience with the Portege line (specifically the 3490)?
Specifically, is a 3.something pound Portege still easy to toss into a
backpack and not really notice it or does the bigger footprint make it
a lot harder to bring along than the Libretto? The weight isn't much
more, but the size certainly is...

It's such a shame that the newest libby is so limited in processor and
RAM. I can see that Toshiba is trying to make this a "niche item", but
I use my 70CT day-in day-out as my only computer, and just can't see
paying $2600 from dynamism for a 266 with 64 MB and a screen with 480
pixels vertically... even if it is the latest greatest libby (with a
camera - whoop de do). Too bad they seem to have dropped the line
completely... I suppose I'll keep my 70ct for what it's good at, and
get something else to carry around and work on daily...

Also, do any Toshiba's come with FireWire or are they not going along
with that standard? I hate the Sony's but they have a machine similar
to the Portege that I won't buy because it doesn't have IR and it has a
touchpad instead of a pointer... but at least it has USB and FireWire.
Given the choice, I NEED my IR, but I hate to buy a computer in 2001
  that still doesn't support FireWire...

  Any opinions welcome...

  Thanks,

  David

Well, he didn't suggest that he KILL the snake, just that he remove it.
Hopefully it can survive outside the EPL.

They might declare it endangered. Then you'd be stuck with maintaining it's
  habitat in pristine condition!

Seriously, it sounds like a noisy chip. Not much to do about it in a
  practical sense.
