I agree, Philip...was wondering lately if list was even working anymore...

FWIW,everyone, I've been thru several little devices in the past year; HTC
Advantage, Kohjinsha SH6, Sony UX90S, OQO E2, and now settled in with a Fujitsu
U810 that I really enjoy and hope to keep for awhile!!!

Still could use a display for my ol' Libby 100, if anyone can part with one or
knows where to get one reasonably

 Hi Matt,

FWIW, I saw one at my local MicroCenter a week
ago...very nice lil' lappyfor light
usage/carryaround everywhere unit it's a good choice
given the relatively low price.

As they were sold out I picked one up from
CentralComputer here in Silicone Valley as they got
about 60 of them in yesterday...

Selling like hotcakes...most places that got some sold
out immediately...ASUS is trying replenish as best
they can...

The eeePC 701 that is on sale now has 4GB flash
storage and 512MB RAM (but user upgradeable to 1 or 2
GB, but the Linux OS on it only recognizes 1GB, but if
you put XP on it, it will see 2GB)

ASUS is releasing soon a less expensive model with
only 256MB RAM and 2GB Flash and no webcam to get
price down around $200 +/-see:

Number one problem is that it's not there ;-)

Some time ago, the display went out on another Libby I
had at the time, so I moved the display to that one.
Later on, I sold it.

So, now I have a very nice condition 100CT with no
display. ;-(

Subject: FS - Libretto 100CT Other Parts

Holiday Greetings Fellow Libretterati,

I submitted the following to the group awhile ago, but got no
responses...realized that some time has passed and thought I'd offer it up
again.

Have 2 items that may be of interest to someone in this group

* If interested PLEASE email me Directly, Off-List. *

The other option for Item 1 below would be for someone to sell me the LCD
Display and Hard Drive Tray, so that I could make the Libby into a complete
unit again...so if you happen to have one or both of these items and could
sell them to me at at reasonable price, please contact me directly off-list.

Thanks,

Mark
Silicone Valley Digerati

ITEM 1 - Libretto 100 CT

Found this in my home office today

This looks like a very good physical condition Libretto 100CT except that
from what I can tell, it is missing the following:

-LCD Display
-Hard Drive tray

So this would be great for someone who either needs this for parts for their
other Libretto or would like to put in the missing parts and create a
complete Libretto.

* If interested PLEASE email me Directly, Off-List. *

ITEM 2 - Libretto Keyboard Surround Frame Casing

This is the casing that surrounds the keyboard. So it is the upper half of
the bottom half of the Libretto. Looks great.

* If interested PLEASE email me Directly, Off-List. *

Excellent condition, bought it new near end of Feb '06.

Have $1650 into it with 1GB RAM (total) and 100GB 5400RPM Seagate Momentus

I realise this is the Internet, people can post what they want and all that

Fujitsu P1510

Hi David,

Like you I've been interested in the P1510

However, one thing to remember is that while this appears to be a TabletPC
form-wise, it's not really a TabletPC as it runs regular WinXP not TabletPC
edition. Therefore, you won't have all the features that you would with a
'real TPC'.

You can of course, put a 3rd party handwriting app on it like PenOffice, etc
and get some of the functionality of a TPC.

Just my 2¢

I was recently going through the list of mini-notebooks (Libretto U100, etc.)
to see what was available for upgrading from my L110, but nothing really
 caught
my eye. U100 screen didn't fold 180 degrees, others were too big or limited
 in
battery life, and I still love the feeling of the pen drawing on the Toshiba
 R15 screen (tabletpc).

Well, in the middle of searching, the FlyBook did come up - but at $2000 for a
Taiwanese import that didn't have hardly any support in the USA, forget that
(despite a very juicy glossy red cover model).

Happily, came across the Fujitsu P1510 that will (hopefully) be released on
 time Aug 8th.

 http://www.handtops.com/show/news/105

It's amazing to see everything new + a touch screen squeezed into a 2lbs
 package similar to the L110.

What has me saving up to buy one right away? - the unconfirmed starting price
of $1399! Definitely would make the P1510 an immediate buy at this price for
me (assuming nothing else it 'wrong' with the unit), and possibly, one of the
most flexible new mini-notebook alternatives to what is already out on the
 market today!

Swivel screen = roaming GPS map for car walking about, easy to watch DVD
player, PDA killer, etc. etc. This would definitely take care of the need a
GPS + PDA + mini-notebook + paper pad for me, and allow me to wrap everything
 into a 2lbs TabletPC notebook.

Hi Tory,

Great to read about your using a SL-C3000 like me. They're great!

The more I use mine the more I like it.it does make you wonder sometimes
about why to lug around a laptop... ;-)

Recently put X/Qt and Debian on it with iceWM!

Overall, works great and you can still run it with Qtopia at the same time!

Also, re-flashed ROM with the new Cacko beta, works great too.

 Great read!

I'd given up on my Libbys and had pretty much moved entirely over to my
Zaurii for portable computing. (I've got an SL-C3000 - a clamshell with
a 4gb HD, VGA screen, and USB host. I've actually burnt a CD off of it!
Previous to getting the Z I went from the 110ct to a Panasonic Toughbook
M34, which is too big, but has a touchscreen like my Libretto 50m and
 USB. :()

Having an option of a low-memory X server makes me interesting in using
the 110ct again. I'll probably use it for coding - The Zaurus makes a
great unit for text editing, and coding is certainly possible, but it is
 a little clunky :)

 What I'm shooting for:

Mandrake 10.x/9.2, whichever I can get to work. It's got a fresh 9.2 on
it right now, via a USB cdrom install.

 Blackbox

nedit - For coding. Very nice Motif based coding editor with a small
 footprint.

Siag office - looks interesting enough to try.

Skipstone - I'm going to set up a compilation server and give this one

I've put drives from one system into another totally different system
before and have had limited success. If it's a Windows OS on the drive,
and the hardware in the system is plug play, Windows will find the new
hardware, usually ask for the OS installation CD, and then set up what it
can. I've been left with some things working, and others not working that
need drivers installed manually. Swapping drives between my 100
motherboard and the 110 MB usually seemed to go well. Tho' those drives
weren't ever ones I left in a system on a long term basis.

Starting over with installing the OS on a reformatted drive is always the
best way to go though. You don't inherit old problems, or risk conflicts
between the old OS installation and the new system you put the drive into.

Mark... Have you tried making a very basic boot floopy with just the 3-4
necessary MS-DOS boot files, and trying the BIOS ugrade from that?

Method one: With blank unformatted FD in drive, type 'sys A:' (without
 quotes) from a MS-DOS window.

Method two: Right-click on A: drive in My Computer, select 'Format', and
then choose 'Copy system files only'.

Maybe you're still having problems with the memory managers on the full
Windows boot FD even after disabling them.

I have similar experiences. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not and I have
 no clue at all why.
But I have several times suggested to press Alt-F1, Alt-F2, Alt-F3 or
Alt-F4 to see how far the install kernel got. You never reported on this

The problem I've had with using the Alt-F1, Alt-F2, Alt-F3 or Alt-F4
idea is that when I wanted to check on what's going on with install is when
I think something's not working right.

Unfortunately, that is usually the situation...then this technique doesn't
work as the Libretto has frozen up due to kernel panic or something

In other words, this works well it seems when the install is working OK, but
not when the install is not going OK, which is when you want the report

Hope this makes sense ;-)

However, if there's a way to make this work better, please let me know...

 loadlin bzimage root=/dev/ram initrd=pcmcia.dsk rw

This is wrong. pcmcia.dsk is a floppy disk image, not a RAM disk image.

I had a feeling this was not good... ;-)

Second approach, per Slackware install instructions:
 Loadlin bzimage rw root=/dev/ram initrd=initrd.img load_ramdisk=1

 That looks better.

That's what I thought...

Linux starts loading and then with either approach, I get the following
 error message:

FAT: bogus logical sector size 5345

It sounds like the FAT (=Windows) partition you are installing from has some
problems. Have you ever run scandisk? The scan-/chkdsk version from Win2K is
much more rigorous BTW. Are there no bad sectors on your HD?

Well, didn't report on this, but I swapped out hard drive recently just
before recent post...put new 60GB drive in. Reinstalled WinXP Pro
fresh...then tried Linux...

But I can run scandisk...and see if there's any problems...

It may also be that the MBR has irreconcilable entries. The info on each
partition is always double, once in CHS and once in absolute sectors.
Ofcourse Windows uses one of these, the rest of the world the other, and that
 is where problems may start.
These problems may well be the cause of failure of all your Linux install
 attempts.
 But read on..

Yipes.

UPDATE: Gokhan was kind enough to check his files and send me his
Slackware3.1 install files. This worked up to point where it asks you
partition hard drive. Had problems with version of fdisk. Something not
 right about it

Try to dump fdisk and use cfdisk. Various Linux docs about fdisk point out
that it has many flaws. I don't remember the details, but it mentioned
somewhere that luckily, fdisk will usually (but not always) come up with the
right info or words like that (in man fdisk IIRC).

I can try this...

But as you made so many proper attempts already, I am suspicious that
something in your Libretto is flakey. Windows is not too critical especially
about disk geometry, so that's wher I would look first.

So you think it's hard drive related??? Even though I just put in brand new
drive last week???

BTW my apologies if I am wrong, aren't you the one who a while ago complained
that when booting from floppy the HD couldn't be seen, and it turned out you
had a disk manager on your HD? (...I am away from home currently so can't
 check the archives)

Yes, that was megood memory Philip...

If that were true, it would explain a bit. Recent
Linux kernels install kernels should be able to recognize disk managers, but
certainly not all of them, and may be upset or even break up if these disk
 managers mislead them.
That is just one of the many reasons I try to avoid disk managers like

Think this got 'lost in the shuffle' of the recent server burping
However, in resending I've added some updates from today's 'wasted
efforts'...

Mandrake9.1 Floppy/Hard Drive/CD Install:

Re-read text on Philip's excellent Linux on Libretto webpage...realized
there was additional files to copy over to hard drive and other 'loadlin'
command text to type

Good news is that after a few tries with the old kernel panic error message
( Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount rootfs on 01:00 ) I managed to get past
that finally and install process started. However, after a while display
went black and didn't seem like anything was happening...so after some time
past I shutdown and restarted

Sometimes, got to point where it asks you to select where to start install
from, selected CD-ROM. CD drive would start up and make whirring noises, but
after a minute it would shut down and nothing would happen...

Meanwhile, here's resend from previous Slackware Install attempt:

Decided to try Slackware9.1 install again, from hard drive with floppy
boot...

Tried to do as was suggested in post shown below and found Slackware's hard
drive install instructions , but still have problems...

So would like to clarify a few things and see if anyone has any
suggestions...

I assume the instructions below were for installing using the hard drive for
the install. This is based upon reference shown to the list of files (3
listed).

If so, 2 of the 3 files were slightly different than the ones listed. My
files copied from the Slackware 9.1 CD-ROM are:

slackware/kernels/loadlin.exe
slackware/kernels/bare.i/bzImage
slackware/rootdsks/pcmcia.dsk

Also from Slackware instructions, it said to copy the intrd.img file from
the isolinux directory too. So did that as well after I tried installing
without it.

Put all the files into a directory 'slack'.

Then, I entered the following after booting up with floppy drive and into
DOS, change directory to c:\slack, then entered the at the DOS prompt.

First approach, when I tried to install per post below:

loadlin bzimage root=/dev/ram initrd=pcmcia.dsk rw

Second approach, per Slackware install instructions:

Loadlin bzimage rw root=/dev/ram initrd=initrd.img load_ramdisk=1

Linux starts loading and then with either approach, I get the following
error message:

FAT: bogus logical sector size 5345
UMSDOS: msdos_read_super failed, mount aborted
sh-2021: reiserfs_read_super: can not find reiserfs on ramdisk(1,0)

UPDATE: Gokhan was kind enough to check his files and send me his
Slackware3.1 install files. This worked up to point where it asks you
partition hard drive. Had problems with version of fdisk. Something not
right about it

Had hoped that I might be able to use his files to start install and then
switch over to new Slack install files either on hard drive or CD...

S,... if anyone can provide any input or suggestions that would be
greatly appreciated!!

I have spent hours and hours trying to get Linux installed and going
crazy...

Then, I entered the following after booting up with floppy drive and into
DOS, change directory to c:\slack, then entered the at the DOS prompt.

First approach, when I tried to install per post below:

loadlin bzimage root=/dev/ram initrd=pcmcia.dsk rw

Second approach, per Slackware install instructions:

Loadlin bzimage rw root=/dev/ram initrd=initrd.img load_ramdisk=1

Linux starts loading and then with either approach, I get the following
error message:

FAT: bogus logical sector size 5345
UMSDOS: msdos_read_super failed, mount aborted
sh-2021: reiserfs_read_super: can not find reiserfs on ramdisk(1,0)
Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount rootfs on 01:00

So if anyone can provide any input or suggestions that would be greatly
appreciated!!

I have spent hours and hours trying to get Linux installed and going
crazy...

While trying to think of what other issues could be affecting install, I
wondered whether there could be some issue with my hard drive and its setup?

If that's a possibility, I could bite the bullet and reformat and start
fresh.

Thanks!

Tried to do as was suggested in post shown below and found Slackware's hard
drive install instructions , but still have problems...

So would like to clarify a few things and see if anyone has any

I assume the instructions below were for installing using the hard drive for
the install. This is based upon reference shown to the list of files (3
listed).

If so, 2 of the 3 files were slightly different than the ones you list. My
files copied from the Slackware 9.1 CD-ROM are:

slackware/kernels/loadlin.exe
slackware/kernels/bare.i/bzImage
slackware/rootdsks/pcmcia.dsk

Also from Slackware instructions, it said to copy the intrd.img file from
the isolinux directory too. So did that as well after I tried installing
without it.

Decided to try Slackware 9.1 install again, from hard drive with floppy
boot...

Tried to do as was suggested in post shown below and found Slackware's hard
drive install instructions , but still have problems...

So would like to clarify a few things and see if anyone has any
suggestions...

I assume the instructions below were for installing using the hard drive for
the install. This is based upon reference shown to the list of files (3
listed).

If so, 2 of the 3 files were slightly different than the ones you list. My
files copied from the Slackware 9.1 CD-ROM are:

slackware/kernels/loadlin.exe
slackware/kernels/bare.i/bzImage
slackware/rootdsks/pcmcia.dsk

Also from Slackware instructions, it said to copy the intrd.img file from
the isolinux directory too. So did that as well after I tried installing
without it.

Put all the files into a directory 'slack'.

Then, I entered the following after booting up with floppy drive and into
DOS, change directory to c:\slack, then entered the at the DOS prompt.

First approach, when I tried to install per post below:

loadlin bzimage root=/dev/ram initrd=pcmcia.dsk rw

Second approach, per Slackware install instructions:

Loadlin bzimage rw root=/dev/ram initrd=initrd.img load_ramdisk=1

Linux starts loading and then with either approach, I get the following
error message:

FAT: bogus logical sector size 5345
UMSDOS: msdos_read_super failed, mount aborted
sh-2021: reiserfs_read_super: can not find reiserfs on ramdisk(1,0)
Kernel Panic: VFS: unable to mount rootfs on 01:00

So if anyone can provide any input or suggestions that would be greatly
appreciated!!

I have spent hours and hours trying to get Linux installed and going
crazy...

While trying to think of what other issues could be affecting install, I
wondered whether there could be some issue with my hard drive and its setup?

If that's a possibility, I could bite the bullet and reformat and start
fresh.

Thanks!

If that's a possibility, I could bite the bullet and reformat and start
fresh.

Thanks!

Re: [LIB] How to Install Linux on 110CT from HD?

2004-10-22 Thread Mark Srebnik
Date: Thu, 21 Oct 2004 18:27:05 -0700
From: Mark Srebnik [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: [LIB] How to Install Linux on 110CT from HD?

If that's a possibility, I could bite the bullet and reformat and start
fresh.

Thanks!

If your Linux setup remains problematic, just transplant your HD to

XFree86, specify Neomagic NM 2160 and some default resolution, but do

Let Linux reboot for the first time with the HD back in the Libretto.
From then on you can setup Linux further using Harddrake (Mandrake) or

Arggg.guess I wrote too soon

A) Mandrake Saga:

Defragged my hard as requested by Mandrake installer. Then tried installing
again with 'pcmcia' boot disk as noted below in previous post.

This time problemswhen asked to select where to install from HD, CD,
etcI selected CD drive but now nothing happens...CD drive doesn't
respond...;-(

I got a message: 'gzip: stdin: unexpected end of file' in the installer
window.

Also saw message:

Warning: mounting partition /dev/hda5 in directory /tmp/inspect_tmp_dir
failed (invalid argument)

Saw same message for hda7 as well

Tried a few times, even remade boot disk...but no go...

Very strange as to why things aren't working now after it seems I was so
close to getting Mandrake installed???

B) VectorLinux 4.3 Saga:

Meanwhile, downloaded VectorLinux4.3 that ol' Philip installed...printed out
install instructions, extracted files as instructed to hard drive

Since I have WinXP Pro on my 110CT, I'm booting to DOS with a Win98 boot
floppy

After I typed the install command:

Loadlin ide root=/dev/ram rw initrd=initrd.img

Setup started, saw lots of textat the end saw error message:

Any ideas about how to deal with this??

Thanks for everyone's continuing assistance.

 Puzzling

 1. The error message simply means that the kernel could not find the
file system on ramdisk (I guess VFS means virtual file system.)
Is initrd.img in the same subdir as ide (I guess so otherwise loadlin
 would have complained)?

Yes.

Is initrd.img from the same VL43 version as ide?

Yes.

BTW you typed the same command line as in:

 posting by robomop)
and I used it too - worked for me.

I got it from the VL4.3 Install Instructions I printed out...

 2. I am beginning to suspect other (hardware?) problems (e.g., memory
 module seated OK?).

Checked memory module recentlyin Windows it says I have 64MB

 - Have you got the latest BIOS (v 8.1)?

Yes.

Another issue might be your BIOS setup. I have:

Subject: Re: [LIB] Install Linux on 110CT w/FD/CD - UPDATE I

Thanks again Philip for your help!

Definitely helps keep me going and not giving up on Linux!

However, things don't seem to be going well for me

Maybe I don't understand things correctly, but I did enter the command as
you had written in your previous email:

loadlin vmlinuz initrd=all.rdz ramdisk_size=128000 root=/dev/ram3
acpi=off vga16

The problem with Mandrake install always was occurring after it recognized
the CDRW/DVD drive (using my USB cable) and CD drive seems to take over
install process. Always gets stuck when the installer says 'Configuring
PCMCIA Cards'...although it's interesting that in the very top right of the
installer window it says 'hard drive detection'

Also, the floppy drive keeps working and light is continually on and doesn't
go off.

I tried Jim Drouillard's suggestion to disconnect floppy after CD drive
starts working but makes no differenceThanks for the suggestion Jim!

So I also tried connecting my CD drive with the PCMCIA cable and used the
command you wrote below. Same problem...

Then tried to do your other suggestion and for some unknown reason can't
seem to copy files from the DVD (from the Linux magazine). Keep getting
error messages in Windows when it tries to copy file over to hard drive.
Also, tried using DOS copy command after booting with Win98 boot floppy.
That didn't work either!

Starting to wonder if maybe there might be a problem with the files on the
DVD???

Maybe best to download Linux install files myself instead of using these
magazine CD's and DVD's???

I'm pretty persistent guy but this is starting to drive me nuts ;-)

 Hi Philip,

 Thanks for the advice...

Just tried what you suggested with Mandrake...

After starting the install with the loadlin command as you describe, got a
bunch of text and at the end:

Kernel panic: VFS: unable to mount root fs on 01:03

= kernel can't find the ramdisk file system. I think it intends to say
it can't find the image. Did you specify the ramdisk image and -size?
I do not know the commands for USB CD-ROM players. For Mandrake 9.2 to
be installed using a PCMCIA CD-ROM player I used:

 loadlin vmlinuz initrd=all.rdz root=/dev/ram3 ramdisk_size=128000
 vga=785 acpi=off pcmcia automatic=method:cdrom

 (all on one line).
Perhaps change pcmcia into usb (w/o quotes) and try again?

If it still won't go, copy the entire \Mandrake dir from your CD-ROM to
HD, too, and use something like

 loadlin vmlinuz initrd=all.rdz root=/dev/ram3 ramdisk_size=128000
 acpi=off

and specify a HD install when asked (it will also ask for the location
of the \Mandrake tree.). The acpi=off thing makes little difference BTW
 (at least here).
BTW I figure you got just one CD-ROM for Mandrake 9.1?

Now, I did copy over the alt0 directory on the CD I have. However, wonder if
it matters or not that this was a CD from a Linux magazine??

Just check if there's a vmlinuz and an all.rdz file.

Also, wouldn't mind trying VectorLinux too...

Do you use the same loadlin command or is it different?

 Vectorlinux? IIRC it is
 loadlin ide rw initrd=initrd.img root=/dev/ram
or so (ide instead of vmlinuz). Details are in the vectorlinux message
board / installation forum (see their web site).

 Oh wellany suggestions

 1) Make sure you don't have any PCMCIA cards except for the floppy drive
 installed.

Just removed my ethernet card and tried againmade no difference, still
gets stuck on 'Configuring PCMCIA card'

 2) Try installing the floppy in the laptop PCMCIA rather than the docking port
 (Or vice versa)

Just tried both waysmade no difference, still gets stuck on 'Configuring
PCMCIA card'

 3) Try Mandrake 9.2. Sounds like the 9.1 kernel is choking on something.

Wouldn't mind trying 9.2...having problem downloading it for some reason,
but will try again later...

When I did it, the install just ignored the floppy drive - I didn't have a
problem with the PCMCIA services (That I recall. It's been a long time now.)

Hmmmwhat I noticed is that even when CD drive started up after floppy
boot and selecting CD drive install, floppy drive light stays on continually

Thanks as always Philip for your input!

Here's some more. Try to install from HD.

Simply copy the contents of \isolinux\alt0 on MDK9.1 CDROM #1 to a
 directory on your HD.

 Next download
 ftp://elserv.ffm.fgan.de/pub/linux/loadlin-1.6/update-1.6c/loadlin.exe.gz
 (= latest loadlin.exe)
and unpack it with winzip or so into this \isolinux\alt0 directory on
 your HD.

Then boot into plain DOS (when booting W98, hit F8 early in the boot
process to get a menu and choose the lowermost option, otherwise boot
 from a DOS floppy).
Then, change directory to \isolinux\alt0 on your HD and start the
 installation with:
 loadlin vmlinuz initrd=all.rdz ramdisk_size=128000 root=/dev/ram3
 acpi=off vga16
and see how far you get this time.

Any way to get a Linux LiveCD to work???

On a Libretto? Not that I know of.

BTW I just tried VectorLinux 4.3 and installed it on my Lib110. Worked
the same way using loadlin; only thing is that all installation files
had to be copied to a directory \veclinux on HD (some 400 MB in total).
VectorLinux is *much* faster than Mandrake, boots faster and it has a
 very recent kernel (2.6.x).
One glitch is that I couldn't get my HP Deskjet printer to work (it may
be that the cups network printer driver is broken). For the rest I like
 VL43 very well.

 Good luck,

 P.

Just a quick update

Tried Tory's suggestion and made some progress, but not there yet...

I looked at image files and made boot floppy from image file on Mandrake 9.1
CD called 'hdcdrom_usb.img'didn't see one there called 'usb.img'.

Did that using 'rawwinen' in 'dosutils' directory...

Floppy booted Libretto and saw Mandrake Install window and then asked
whether to install from CDROM or Hard Drive. Selected CDROM and it
recognized CDROM and started install process!

The first few steps went OK, but seemed to have hit a snag now...for the
past 30 minutes my floppy drive is working and the install window says
configuring PCMCIA cards. I have a feeling installer is stuck

Oh wellany suggestions

2 steps forward, 1 step back

Err... That was mainly it. What boot disk are you using to do the
installation? You have to take a look in the images directory on the first
Mandrake 9 cd, and you'll see a bunch of IMG files. I believe the
standard/most common boot disk is the cdrom.img image. The one you want for a
USB CD-ROM install is the usb.img. It should give the details, including how
to make a boot cd from an image in the install documentation - which is a
text file on the CD itself. I can't be any more specific, as I don't have my
Madrake 9 cds here right now.

Hi Philip,

Well, right on target as usual!

You were right, I have EZ-Drive installed and wasn't following the right
boot up steps...once I did it assigned the CD drive as 'E'...

So just copied OS files over to HD... ;-)

Sounds like you may have problems with the DOS drivers
you set up to access your CD-ROM drive in DOS. How
did you go about that? What drivers from where?
Which CD-ROM drive? What do the autoexec.bat and
 config.sys files look like?

There's always the laplink cable connection to any
other system David suggested for getting the files in
\Win98 from the OS CD to your new HDD.

Option A) Do a clean install of the new OS on a new hard drive (without any
 Toshiba Libretto floppies or CD's)?

Download all drivers from www.csd.toshiba.com -- you don't need any recovery
CDs to run the Libretto fine.

Next, you can simply boot to the floppy drive, fdisk and format the HD,
reboot and load up the DOS CD_ROM drivers, then copy the entire \win98
directory from the install CD onto the HD, then run setup.exe to install
 win98,
then install the drivers you have from www.csd.toshiba.com.

This gives you a new, fresh install of win98 + working lIbretto drivers that
works perfectly (I've tried on both the L50/J i had and the L110 i have).

 1) I used PartitionMagic to setup a 20 GB Linux partition and a 500MB swap
space partition before it on my 60GB hard drive. Both of these partitions
are after my 'C' (WinXP) and 'D' (Backup) partitions.

You may already have created a problem. AFAIK you have to have at least
a small /boot partition before the 8 GB hard disk boundary. But then
again, with modern bootloaders this may not be needed anymore.
Otherwise, as per your partition scheme, you might be able to boot Linux
from the WinXP boot mgr screen using bootpart (see www.winimage.com).

 2) Then I realized that my EXP CDRW/DVD drive was not a bootable drive.

Even that is irrelevant as the Lib110 simply doesn't allow booting from
USB or PCMCIA. It leaves it to an operating system to initialize PCMCIA
USB, the Lib's BIOS is just not equipped for that.

Read in Slackware instructions that you can use Smart Boot Mgr on floppy
disk to start boot, then get a CD drive recognized. However, for some reason

I tried the same. Problem is that the BIOS does not initialize the
USB/PCMCIA ports, and Smartbootmgr cannot do it either (though it can
use them once initialized. A subtle difference). There you are.

it doesn't see my CD drive. Then I did the manual port assignment per the
instructions (using the ports given) but when I tried to do rescan for
drives, it doesn't seem to rescan

So, before I waste even more hours, I thought I'd ask this illustrious group
 for advice!

I keep reading about 'network install' as way to get around this bootable CD
issue but I don't have another PC right now.

I have only experience with Mandrake (Vector Linux is on my list, I have
to sort out how to start its instalation using loadlin). To wit:

For Mandrake 9.2, you have insufficient memory (I tried, but Mandrake
install mumbled that more than 64 MB RAM was needed for *any* network
install I tried (NFS, FTP, HTTP, you-name-it)). PLIP seems to be no more
option these days :-( Only way out (for me) was to install from PCMCIA
CD-ROM. If you own an extended port replicator w/ USB, you have more
options (see the list for a recent report).

For Mandrake 10 it's worse. The install kernel apparently expects a PCI
IDE hard disk, and the Lib has only ISA IDE. During install you'll see
that it keeps searching for a hard disk on imm (aka ZIP) and scsi, it
simply does not see the ISA HD. It may be that the final kernel knows
about it, but the install kernel is the bottleneck (oh yes, it asks
about the Options or Modules floppy but of course the install kernel
can't access the Lib's non-standard PCMCIA floppy Anybody know a way
 out?)

Also, read about a DOS install, but not sure about how to do that.

Copy the entire /Mandrake or /RedHat directory of CD1 to a FAT16 or
FAT32 drive. Somewhere on that drive, make another small directory
containing the install kernel, loadlin.exe (search the Web) and the
install boot ram disk image. Then boot into an as bare DOS as possible
 and do something like
 loadlin vmlinuz initrd= options
Once you got a basic install, you can use urpmi or package managers to
install from the rest of the CD-ROMs.
On my web page (home.hccnet.nl/pr.nienhuis/Lib110CT.html) I've got some
hints on installation of Linux and on cooperation of a.o. Linux with
other operating systems on Librettos, including the exact syntax of the
 line above (for Mandrake).

Also, I did see on EXP's website www.expnet.com that there is a DOS driver
for the CD drive. Should I install this?

If I were you, I would try it anyway just to know if you have another
option for your installation somehow. As the Lib has a quite dumb BIOS
(to current standards) DOS access may save your butt someday.

 Good luck,

 Philip

Thanks so much to everyone who replied so far!

As always really appreciate the help from the group!

Will give the suggestions a tryand report back

Since I do have quite a few Linux distro CD's collected, any recommendations
regarding which one to try, Slackware, Mandrake, VectorLinux, Gentoo,
etc

Thanks!

 Greetings!

Having successfully installed WinXP Pro on my 110CT (works pretty well once
tweaked), I'm now ready to install Linux on it!

Considering installing Slackware or one of it's derivatives...(although open
to other suggestions)have several Linux distro CD's that I got with
 Linux magazines...
