Hi,

sigh I have just posted a step by step
instruction on how you should install Windows into
a machine _without_ built in CD-ROM, especially
the Libby. Please search the archive for my name.
I posted on 3rd of May. In fact, this is exactly
the same thread I replied to, so there should be
no reason for you to miss it. Hmmm...

If you re-format the whole drive and try to
install Windows from the CD-ROM, I bet you'll find
many unpleasant surprises.

I have decided to reformat and install Win95 as I have all the OS on floppies and
don't wish to postpone this pain any longer. I hope that when this is all done and
Outlook 2000 reinstalled I won't
have the same illegal operations when using some of the Outlook features.

With floppies in hand can someone advise how I initialise and reformat... the rest
of the instructions seem simple enough.

Subject: Re[2]: Need to reinstall Windows to Libretto 100CT

Hi,

In general, I won't recommend _upgrading_ Windows.
Things get messy and the system will become
unstable (say hello to the Blue Screen of
Death).

The best way I know to cleanly install Windows on
a notebook that has PCMCIA CD-ROM drive is this:

1. Copy the entire Windows disc (at least the
directory with the .CAB files) into a secondary
partition of your HD. Should be around a few
hundred MB at most, so I think most modern HD
should have enough space for that.
If your HD only has 1 partition, use Partition
Magic to re-partition it without destroying all
   the existing data.

While you are at it, also backup essential
things that you need from the C drive to the
   secondary partition (probably D drive).

2. Boot up your notebook with a floppy.

3. Format the C drive at the command prompt.

4. Go to your secondary drive's Windows directory
(the one where you copied the Windows disc to)
   and run setup.exe.

5. A brand new copy of Windows will now be installed
   into the C drive.

6. Boot up your computer normally and install all
the other drivers and then applications.

Note: The PCMCIA CD-ROM should work without
additional drivers, since Windows installs the
   PCMCIA driver by default.

From experience, the above method works
wonderfully and without much trouble.

only because I didn't have the right tools. I have *full* Win98 CD-ROMs, not
 *upgrade* CD-ROMS.

What I wound up doing was nuking the WIn95 install as much as possible (did
you knoww there are hidden, zero-length files in some directories that the
 'del' command can not remove?

Anyway, after infliciting major damage by deleting everything I could, and
renaming directories I couldn't empty, I was able to install Win98 on my
machine from a CD-ROM image copied onto my local HD over a network
 connection.

Does anyone know how to *upgrade* a Win95 install with a Win98
*full-version* CD? By default, it can not be done (Win98 setup finds the OS
 and aborts)...

 I have a 50CT over-clocked to 100mhz, 32mb ram, and 2.1GB hard drive. I was
wondering if it would be able to handle Win2k Advanced Server. Anyone have
 experience with this?

I would seriously not recommend it. Win2K Pro is
acceptable only with 128MB of RAM and above, so
Win2K AS would surely choke on 32MB. Not only is
your Libby short of RAM, the CPU is dated as well.
WinME would be a better choice, though barely.

If you need "server" type of services, you should
probably look into Linux. Linux with selective
services and a minimal window manager (or GUI
package) might just work with your Libby.

Libby 50 was shipped with Win95. There is a HUGE
difference in terms of resource demand between
Win95 and Win2K. :)

Re: Libretto in Singapore

2001-03-19 Thread Viboon Chaojirapant

From: Viboon Chaojirapant [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: Libretto in Singapore

Hi Michael,

There are only 2 places that you need to visit.
Both are already mentioned by Michael Berlant in
another email: Funan Center and Sim Lim Square.

Funan Center is more "up-class" in terms of
ambience and product. Currently, most major brands
have setup their retail center there. For example,
you'll find shops by HP, Gateway, Acer, Epson,
Canon. Apart from that, most shops are also
authorized re-sellers of major brands like
Toshiba, IBM, Palm, Handspring, Fujitsu, Compaq
etc. Basically, if you want to buy branded desktop
or notebook, you should visit Funan first.

Sim Lim Square is very different from Funan
nowadays. The pirated CD shops are all gone now.
In their place are many, many shops selling
computer parts and accessories. Basically, if you
want to build your own PC, this is _the_ place to
go.

Generally, prices at Sim Lim Square will be lower
than Funan. However, you may have to put up with
bad service and the crowd (very crowded during
weekends!).

I am not sure what products you have in mind, but
it is good to check out this website:
http://www.hardwarezone.com/

It is a Singaporean website. There is a
"pricelist" section which features a comprehensive
list of prices for computer parts and notebooks at
Sim Lim Square. The prices are actively updated.
If you can't find what you want there, maybe you
can ask me, since I go to Sim Lim pretty often. :)

BTW, usually the prices include GST (3%) already,
but if you are paying by credit card, do expect
the shops to add additional 3% to the price.

Hope this helps.

 Dear list members,
I am visiting Singapore next week for a few days, as a stop over on my way
 to Australia.
Can anyone recommend whether Singapore is a good place to buy computer
products (ie cheaper than UK prices !) and if so, recommend any PC stores in
 Singapore.
I would dearly like to upgrade my 50CT.
 Thank you,
 Mike.

Hi,

I remember when it used to be fre, then trial expiring after a month
or so. Now I just checked the site again, and it's demo. You can download
98lite, but it'll only show you how much space will be freed up if you pay
money for the software. And $25 is asked for a piece of software that will
only be used once, or twice? :P

Just want to point out that 98Lite is free and
does not expire. It _will_ remove IE and un-needed
Win98 things from the machine.

The difference between 98Lite and 98Lite Pro is
that the later is a shareware and contains more
features.

Surf to http://www.98lite.net/preview.html for
more information. Here is a quote from that page:

"This FREE Preview is a no-nags, unlimited preview

Hi Brad,

Win98SE? You can get it anywhere that sells Windows OS.
"SE" stands for Second Editon (not Special Edition :).
All off-the-shelf Win98 boxes should be SE by now. Same
for all desktops and notebooks that shipped with Win98
late last year and this year. Anyway, during bootup,
the splash screen will display "Windows 98 Second Editon"
instead of just "Windows 98".

Update from Microsoft? Nah...they would rather you
"upgrade" to WinME. :)

Re[2]: can't install CD in 70-CT

From: Viboon Chaojirapant [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re[2]: can't install CD in 70-CT

Hi Ken,

It is a shame that you have to sell away the L70
because the external CD-ROM drive can't work.
I can't get my CD-ROM to work in DOS too when
I just got my L70. In fact, because of that, I
can't install Win98 clean. However, there is an
alternative.

Anyway, in case you want one to give it one
last chance:

1. Get a DOS PC communication program. I used
Norton Commander. I'm sure there are others
out there that will enable you too connect
2 PCs via a serial or parallel cable in DOS.
   Try http://www.bootdisk.com/.

2. Get a serial or parallel communication cable.
Connect L70 and a desktop with it.

3. Boot L70 from floppy and maybe format the
hard disk? I partitioned my 6GB disk into
   C and D drives.

4. Copy the DOS PC communication program into
a desktop PC that is linked with your L70
through the serial or parallel port.
You also need a copy on your L70. I put it
   into D drive.

5. Activate the DOS PC communication program
on both L70 and desktop. Make the desktop
the master and L70 the slave. Make sure the
   2 PCs see each other.

6. Put your Win98 or whatever CD into the desktop's
   CD drive.

7. Copy all files from the Win98 CD into a
directory in the L70's D drive. This may take
a few hours, depending on the stability
of the communication program. Norton Commander
   was pretty stable.

8. Restart your L70, boot from floppy again.

9. Go to the local copy of Win98 and run setup.exe.
   Install into C drive.

If you follow the above steps, you'll get a clean
copy of Win98 in L70. With Win98, you will then
have access to the CD-ROM, no problem at all
for me. From then on, you can install anything you
want through the CD drive, or anywhere.

It took me 2 weeks just to get Win98 into L70,
and it was an extremely frustrating experience.
I had tried various methods to make the PCMCIA
card CD-ROM work in DOS but fail. The Toshiba
website isn't helpful at all. Finally, I figured
the above mentioned method is worth a try and
indeed it was. In fact, it took me a day to
copy Win98SE into L70, and the next day I had
Win98SE running already.

Now I am happy with my L70 :).

Hope this helps.

Hi Azad,

I have just upgraded my drive to a Toshiba 6GB drive
3 weeks ago. I believe it is the MK6014MAP, if not then
it is the MK6015MAP, but definitely one of these two
(I checked).

Anyway, I have a L70 with the original Bios 6.20 and
here is what I did with the drive:

1. Partition the 6GB drive into 3 partitions using
   fdisk:
   a. 3GB -- wanted to install Win98Lite here
   b. 2.9GB -- used this as temporary storage for now, Linux later
   c. 100MB -- this is for hibernation

2. As mentioned in an earlier email by Olaf, set the
first partition active, so that it is bootable

3. Format 1st and 2nd partitions to FAT32.

4. I then copied installation files like Win98, drivers,
programs etc. into my D drive through serial cable
connection using Norton Commander. (For those who have
good memory, in my earlier mails, I was asking for
help to detect my PCMCIA CD-ROM in DOS so that I
can do installation through CD-ROM. Well, it turned
out that that method was simply TOO difficult, so this
is the best alternative. But thanks everyone for your
   help :)

5. Installed Win98Lite from D drive into C drive.

6. Rebooted. And Win98 booted with no problem. Later
   installed drivers and programs.

Try the above, see whether it works for you?

Hope this helps. :)

Hi All,

You may have read in my earlier mail that I would
like to reformat my hard disk and install Win98

the boot up disk to recognize the PCMCIA CD-ROM.

I have "researched" through deja.com archive and
various Webpages and finally found out what I
am missing: A DOS Card Service software. I have
the PCMCIA and CD-ROM drivers, but without the
Card Service, these are useless.

I think many of you must have gone through
installing new OSs into the Libretto, right? :)
So may I request you to send me (privately via
email) a copy of your boot disk that can detect
PCMCIA CD-ROM drive?

I know this sounds desperate, but I have been
spending the last 3 nights searching for a way
to reinstall the OS. It is really frustrating :(.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you so much for replying to my email. Especially
Bill, Neil and Christian. Now I am more confident about
the Libretto :).

From your replies and through some Net surfing,
I think this will be the decision for now:

1. For Win98, this should be what I plan:
   a. Win98 Lite for its size and speed
   b. TextPad for text and coding
   c. The Bat! for email
   d. FreeAgent for news
   e. Navigator or Opera for surfing
   f. Palm Desktop for PIM and Palm synchronization
   g. Office 97 even though I really would like
  to avoid
   h. Various Toshiba Libretto utilities and drivers
I think the above setup should cover 90% of
   all my home/mobile computing needs.

2. If I were to install Linux, I think I will
go with Mandrake 7.0 since I have that as
my home desktop (and Christian managed to
install into L50). Perhaps I will use one of
the lighter window managers like Window Maker
or Sawmill and avoid KDE/Gnome. However,
I am still worried about making the IR/Sound/
APM features work. Also, I will lose the Toshiba
   utilities.

That's it for now, thanks for all the help. I will
try to post the outcome of the above configurations.

Thanks!

 Hi All,

I will be obtaining a used Libretto 70 from a friend.
This will be my first notebook computer, so I am

 Anyway, I have 3 questions:

 1. Can the L70 RAM go above 32MB? I know it says in

the restriction here? BIOS? I really want to have
at least 64MB, because of bloated OSs.

 2. Is the L70, with 120MHz CPU and 32MB RAM and 1.6GB HD,

tried this before?

 3. If I were to install Linux instead, do you think

on my desktop, but I am not sure whether the same
configuration can be used for notebook computers.

 Thank you for your input.

L70 RAM and OS question

Subject: L70 RAM and OS question

Hi All,

I will be obtaining a used Libretto 70 from a friend.
This will be my first notebook computer, so I am
really excited about it. New ones are priced beyond
my reach :(.

Anyway, I have 3 questions:

1. Can the L70 RAM go above 32MB? I know it says in
the spec that 32MB is the maximum. But what is
the restriction here? BIOS? I really want to have
at least 64MB, because of bloated OSs.

2. Is the L70, with 120MHz CPU and 32MB RAM and 1.6GB HD,
capable of running Win98SE and MS Office 97? Anyone
   tried this before?

3. If I were to install Linux instead, do you think
that Mandrake 7.1 would run on it? I have Mandrake 7.0
on my desktop, but I am not sure whether the same
configuration can be used for notebook computers.

Thank you for your input.
