Huh?

so much for buying them from those Hobby RC racing stores!

RC racing stores won't sell Li-Ion cells anyway, as they aren't used (as
far as I know) in RC stuff... I was wondering if they were going to use
them in RC cars and so on, but they are just too delicate and too
expensive.

They are being developed for EV use though. I've seen entire packs developed
from single A sized cells.

[LIB] Rebuilding the 1200mAh PA2452A for 70CT

I almost finished the battery I am rebuilding with the 2000 mAh LG Chem
li-ion cells. I have run into two problems. One, even though they come with
solderable tabs the old batteries are 54 mm long. So the tabs are pretty
useless since soldering them together plus the wiring didn't fit for me. I
took the batteries to batteries plus and asked nicely and they welded the
middle of the cells together so all there is is a wire going to the board
and the batteries will fit legthwise in the case. The second problem is they
are too high to fit nicely in the case even with all the crap removed from
inside. So I think I will have to cut a hole in the bottom so the batteries
have some room. Other than that I just need to find out if they explode when
I try to plug them in and try to charge them. Hope they don't.

How are we ever going to know? Not likely his family will post the results
to the list! Come to think, we never have heard from those other guys that
rebuilt a Lib battery pack. I will have to pay closer attention to the Darwin
awards for any hint that someone that blows himself up might have been a list
member.

Oh, I'll be well away from the test. I'm not ready for the darwin
awards yet. I'm thinking I'll get one of those external chargers to
test with. No use in blowing up my Libretto.

There's probably one other thing you guys should know. The Batteries Plus
tech that welded them for me said I shouldn't have been able to get them
since a person is supposed to have a permit to buy li-ion cells. When I
bought them I put down a company name so whoever processed the order may not
have felt checking was needed. So if this works out you may need to do that
to be able to purchase them. These were advertised as li-ion and they are
stamped with the lg-chem name so I'm pretty sure they are rechargeable. I
checked the lg-chem web site and they do make round li-ion cells in 2000
mAh. They don't seem to make non rechargeable lithium. But if they are non
rechargeable lithium metal cells they WILL explode if you try to charge
them. So if anyone decides to jump the gun and stick some in and expect them
to work be very cautious and be at least 50 feet away and keep the battery
in a nonflammable area which won't be damaged by a explosion and chemical
spray. It'll be awhile before I test them for charging since I decided I
need a external charger to test them and there are none availible on ebay.
