Rests vs spacers style question

Hello folks,

P_POne_Staff_One_Voice_Two below contains rests which may seem to be make the 
score more difficult to read that spacers.

Apart for single voice staves where rests are necessary, is there a 
best-practise style for multivoice staves?

5 string Banjo Tab

 I just joined Lilypond, so am very new at this program. I can’t read music and 
depend totally on Tabs. I need a table or list that shows what letters create 
each of the notes on a Tab. Some samples of the text would be helpful. Most of 
my Tabs are in Clawhammer style and open G tuning.

Empty Staves & Overriding Sequences

Hi LilyPond,
Here are some general questions on coding, which I think can be answered in any 
way that works. The first, however, is more specific. 
Q1. Is there a way to create (and show) an empty stave in a score, rather than 
creating {s1 s1 s1} spaces? 
-because I'm lazy.
Q2. Sometimes I want to omit a phrasing for certain files (e.g. showing repeat 
marks), instead of showing the variation for a repeated phrase, or section. 
Feel free to share if this seems more or less integriful (music wise) but for 
the most part I'm wondering if it can be done beside phrases ordered within a 
single variable. 
-As of writing, most of my phrasing is sequenced under one variable and stays 
this way even with separate files. I came closer to identifying each part 
separately, with different variables, it is harder for me to get the right 
representation from the score. This means to me that I need to use an override 
inside a "relative c' {__ }" or within /score <>. Again, I want to adapt the output so as to have written parts for one 
section and repeat marks in the other.
Thanks to everyone who takes the time to contribute. If I do not hear back, I 
will certainly try to solve the problem on my own at some point. I consider 
myself fortunate, as is, to have found a viable means of copying music, 
accessible and without the environments of traditional software!

let me know. i think it can be done but probably requires a /score that is very 
specific. i hope this was not too difficult.

You are mixing several modes of entry without declaring them properly. I 
*strongly* suggest you work through the Learning Manual online, which 
will solve your basic problems. Forgive my bluntness, but you seem to be 
poking a hornets' nest with a stick, and a bit of time with TFM will 
avoid a good bit of pain! BTW, welcome to LilyPond and don't be shy 
about asking further questions, especially after a trip through the manuals.

How do you run lilypond? This works for me (switches from a German
environment to English output):

issues are explained there. It really helps.

To your 3rd question:

I cannot explain why sometimes \lyricsto "voice" and \lyricmode works
together and sometimes not.

Look up the syntax of \alternative maybe?  It only allows _one_
brace-enclosed sequential music expression.  Every expression in this
sequential music expression is one alternative.  In particular, your
\set-command, not being included in any other expression, is an
alternative of its own.

I'm running LilyPond 2.19.80 with Frescobaldi 2.18.1 under Linux/Ubuntu.

I'm trying to substitute text for the numbers in alternative endings. I've
struggled with this before. I've tried looking in the Notation Reference
and in the Snippet Repository. I'm attaching the closest I've been able to
come to what I want.

I have a partial measure at the beginning, before the repeat.
I'd like to get rid of the end-repeat sign at the beginning of the first
alternative.
The notes are all there, where they're supposed to be.
The "1., etc." for the first alternative is just the way I'd like it.
However, the bracket for the first alternative closes the repeat structure,
and there is no enclosure or text for the second alternative.

This is not intuitive to me.

Can someone please help me solve this?

The instrumentName is misused as overall time signature. I was not sure
what the numbers mean in your example, but I guess it's the time
signature, so I used the number font. But you can also use normal serif
or sans-serif fonts.

Barlines should only be between the lines and not above and below.

It looks as if you have a problem with your mail client quoting.
In the line after addlyrics, there should be a space before the
last two > characters which has gone missing in your post.

These two characters belong to the quoted text and are what
correctly closes the << above. So, to spell it out, in this line:

The first "> " is me quoting you,
the second ">" (which has lost its following space for some
reason best known to you) is you quoting the OP, and the
final ">> " was LP source originally written by the OP.

Writing \music = ... instead of music = ...

Well, LilyPond must be thinking your locale isn't English.  Those
messages appear to be Spanish.  My cute guess would have been that you
are Canadian and specified a "ca" locale which would have been Catalan,
but those seem to be Spanish messages so I have no idea why LilyPond
offers them.

The error is that you used a slash during variable assignment. So, it
should have been:

music = \relative ...

and not

\music = \relative ...

reloading \set TabStaff.minimumFret = #x

Is it possible to omit \set TabStaff.minimumFret = #x for a sequence of 
measures/bars?


One can simply override the statement by defining a string for a note.

I have a couple of bars in sequence that should be fingered below that 
minimumFret. The fingering of the tones of the following bars should 
again resdtricted above some value. I like to avoid defining the strings 
for a long sequence of notes.

    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/to/lilypond/usr/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

to make sure the libraries shipped with LilyPond are used and
avoid such version mismatches with system libraries.
I'm not sure how lyp invokes LilyPond but you should look into
this (and maybe call LilyPond directly/through a custom wrapper
script).

We had to learn that with Frescobaldi too. Frescobaldi can manage
arbitrary LilyPond installations, and by now it injects that
library path (for the chosen LilyPond) in the invocation command.

documentation aspect more of a by-product.

This is urgent for me, as I don't have access to the old machine where 
this worked, and I have some libraries that use the recent font 
changes -- thanks a lot.




No guarantee it works for you, but I have a strong suspicion.
When installing LilyPond the normal way from the downloaded archive it 
creates a wrapper command "lilypond" (usually as ~/bin/lilypond).

This doesn't only call the lilypond executable but also adds
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/path/to/lilypond/usr/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH

to make sure the libraries shipped with LilyPond are used and avoid such 
version mismatches with system libraries.
I'm not sure how lyp invokes LilyPond but you should look into this (and 
maybe call LilyPond directly/through a custom wrapper script).


We had to learn that with Frescobaldi too. Frescobaldi can manage 
arbitrary LilyPond installations, and by now it injects that library 
path (for the chosen LilyPond) in the invocation command.

I don't run Arch, but rather Ubuntu, so I can't offer a great deal of help.
Can you run this with plain lilypond, not lyp, to test?

And how about 2.19.80, a bit more advanced than 2.19.18?

Excellent as Arch may be, I abandoned it (twice!) after getting into the
inevitable dependency hell that Arch produces after some time dealing with
the rolling release model. To be fair, others have success, but this error
looks like a dependency mismatch to me.

Wasn't there a thread a while back about issues with GS 9.22? Sorry if this
is just noise and I am mistaken.

Your code compiles just fine on Ubuntu 16.04 with GS 9.21.
