Re: [linux] password keepers

2024-03-21 Thread Jean-Francois Messier via linux
I have been using Bitwarden for several years now. My main move to
Bitwarden was the fact it is all open source, available to be
installed locally on my own servers if I want, and that it was much cheaper
than any other solution. I can give some demos, but to give demos of some
advanced features, I would need to either have a separate paid account or
use my own, but the fact that it contains passwords and keys limits what I
could display. I wanted to have my own install of Bitwarden, but never had
much time for this. However, I would be willing to have an install on one
of my VPS servers in Beauharnois. If there is an interest, I may try to
find time to get something up and running.

FYI: I used Lastpass previously, but they became very expensive, and
numerous incidents were reported about Lastpass, although no passwords were
reportedly leaked. As a comparison, Bitwarden costs $10 a year, and their
price did not change for multiple years so far.

[linux] AD-based authentication for wireless access points

2024-02-02 Thread Jean-Francois Messier via linux
I have a laptop that works rather well with Linux, but the wireless
connection, working fine at home, has issues on an access point that uses
AD-based credentials to grant access.

In some failed logins, I saw somewhere an error about expired certificates.
Since this time, I never managed to login with the same credentials I used
previously.

My question: Where are those files, so I could find the one from this
access point and remove it, so it gets downloaded again ? I suspect that
those files have a very short lifetime, like a week. Once I find which one
it is, I could put a line to delete this file when booting the laptop.

BTW: This is the Algonquin College wireless network, which uses my AD
credentials. And those seem to be based on Microsoft 365.

Thanks :-)

Re: [linux] Linux-Ottawa / NCF collaboration

I would call this a MAJOR obstacle. If Freenet/NCF is hoping to get money
from everyone joining this list on an annual basis, although OCLUG gave
them thousands of dollars already, we should dissociate from Freenet/NCF.
The decision to send the money to NCF was an honest mistake, but let's not
keep our dependency on NCF. Who knows what else they will ask from the
members in the future ?

[linux] Linux friendly device

I have been using a write-mostly device, one used to jot down
hand-written notes in a completely paperless way. I am talking about
the reMarkable 2. This device, although it has applications under
Windows/MacOS, but not Linux just yet, runs itself under Linux, and
There are multiple utilities available on Github, and everything is
open.

If this is something that may interest some of OCLUG group, please let
me know. There will be some Windows involved for the presentation, but
it will not last long, I promise.

I am looking a video capture device that can record live video output
from a computer, including the whole boot process, like to demonstrate
Ventoy. As this is not happening live on a large screen projector, but
on a video call, this is what I would need to be able to broadcast it. I
don't think I will have time to get something all setup by the time of
the meeting next week. The VMs are good to a point for many hings but
something like Ventoy is hard to virtualise as the whole thing is
designed to work on physical USB keys. Unless someone finds me a way to
take a USB key and make it an ISO file to use on a VM.

I am preparing a presentation for Linux-Gatineau about Ventoy, this
tool that will make a USB key easy to maintain to install multiple
distributions from ISO files. You can have as many ISO files on your
USB key as the space permits. My presentation is currently in French,
but I can easily take this and make an English version. The
presentation lasts about 20-25 minutes, depending on the number of
questions. Ventoy has improved since the last time I remember it was
presented at Linux-Ottawa. Only about 30-60 minutes to translate the
simple slides.

If you think this is something that an audience would be interested,
please let me know. If you want to re-schedule it to the next month, I

pressed, so you can try that to ask questions. There is also the chat window, which
no longer appears to obscure the rest of the session (maybe on small monitors?)
Feel free to post questions and as opportunity presents itself and the presenter
notices, they will get answered. After the presentation is completed, feel free to
unmute and have a normal voice/video Q

[linux] recommendation for a graphic card and DisplayLink external adapters

2021-08-23 Thread jean-Francois Messier
Because of some [very] strange issue with my motherboard, I am unable to
get any output from the HDMI adapter, while the DVI works (for the
on-board connectors). I had to move my computer (and disconnect it from
power) for a couple of hours, and upon re-connecting it HDMI is no more
working. I verified cables, monitors, everything that works fine with my
office laptop is not doing anything with my home PC. I tried everything
I could imagine from the firmware setup, nothing will do. DVI is OK, but
HDMI is dead. I would like to avoid VGA as much as possible.

What are the recommended video boards that I could install that could
give me two outputs for HDMI, or one HDMI and one DVI, that work
flawlessly with Linux ?

Do you have any idea of what else I could try ?

I also have some DisplayLink adapters, but I was always unsure about
those. They seem to claim they work with Linux. Is this true ? Any issue
? Could this be a good/easy replacement for a video board ?

Thank You :-)

[linux] Multiple sites and URL on a single Apache server

2021-07-16 Thread jean-Francois Messier
Can someone explain or point me to a site that explains how I can have
multiple apps or sites on a single Apache server, using the same main
hostname, followed by different subdirs

- https://vps.messier.ca/app1 that would point to /var/www/app1
- https://vps.messier.ca/app2 that would point to /var/www/app2
- https://vps.messier.ca/app3 that would point to /var/www/app3

or different hostnames that would point to different locations on the
server (all hostnames would point to the same IP)

- vps1.messier.ca that would point to /var/www/app1
- vps2. messier.ca that would point to /var/www/app2
- vps3.messier.ca that would point to /var/www/app3

I want to re-use a VPS on multiple small applications, and I do not want
to use strange port numbers.

Re: [linux] expansion of tilde for home directory

2021-06-17 Thread jean-Francois Messier
I would also assume that if this command was run as root it would not
work, as root's home directory is /root. Same for any other user whose
home directory is not under /home. Perhaps a few-lines script would
first have to grep the login ID from /etc/passwd (read-only, so OK),
parse the line to get the actual home directory and return it.

Re: [linux] reMarkable 2 paper tablet

2021-06-04 Thread jean-Francois Messier
Actually, there are many players in this field, and I actually bought
another, previously. This is the NewYES Notebook. You write with a
special pen, that you can use either with an ink like on their pages, or
you can use the plastic end, which works on a re-usable drawing surface.
My problems are that the paper is a special one that you need to order
and is getting expensive. And I think it cannot be recycled. And writing
on the re-usable surface makes rather large lines and the drawing space
is rather small, IMHO. The thing that I found impressive, however, is
that when you use a different paper page, or turn the page to write on
the other side, it s actually detected, and this has nothing to do with
the actual binder. Everything is within the special pen. You can even
take the piece of paper somewhere out of the binder and keep writing on
it. It works with Android fine, but sometime the sync between the
written pages and the actual app in Android takes time. So this is not
something I could see used for live presentations.

Re: [linux] reMarkable 2 paper tablet

2021-06-03 Thread jean-Francois Messier
Well, a full client is supposedly in preparation by the company, but
they did not tell me much more yet. One thing that I have been asking
them was about an instant update of the written image on a reMarkable
tablet to, say, an Android device. If that is possible, the reMarkable 2
can then become a dynamic electronic whiteboard that can be used for
explanations and training, be it over Jitsi, MS-Team, Zoom or anything else.

I'm also trying to find out about actual users of such devices and how
their device is working against Linux.

[linux] reMarkable 2 paper tablet

2021-06-03 Thread jean-Francois Messier
I am currently shopping for one of those tablets where you write on the
tablet and the writing is recorded on the device, sync'ed with your
system or storage. The reMarkable 2 seemed to have been one of the
favorite so far, and I also found out that it is actually running Linux,
not simply a flavor of Android.

Did anyone else have experience with such devices, good or bad, and what
brand name do you have ? The reMarkable 2 is on the pricey side, for
what I can see, but it looks like it is worth it.

Anyway, lemme know what you use (if any)..

Re: [linux] CentOS Stream (was: IPv6)

2021-02-03 Thread Jean-Francois Messier
If you register as a developer, you can have a 16-server free license
with full upgrades/updates of RHEL. The only limitation is that you must
remain within the latest version of a major version number, like 7.9 for
RHEL 7. If 16 servers is enough for you, that's the best deal.

For user desktop sure.

Rocky Linux was mentioned - I believe it is basically a re-fork of
CentOS isn't it, created as a response to this situation by the guy
who originally started CentOS. Their logo certainly look similar.

I'd never heard of Lenix so googled - and looks like they are now Alma

Looks like they have the same goal - though personally I think they
should join forces with Rocky

I also looked into Scientific Linux when this news first came out and
it looks like those folks threw in the towel a while back.

And for a complete list I believe Oracle Linux has a free version and
a paid version. Are they the same? I'm not sure.

Re: [linux] A new subscriber ... in need of help.

2020-01-18 Thread Jean-Francois Messier
I had too many dual-boot setups over the last 20 years.. I got some
experience on this.

The first thing to do is a solid backup (or two). Do not rely on Windows
Backup or Windows CD burner utility to make something reliable. Use the
USB keys and backup your documents, downloads, pictures, etc You
could also send those on some online storage if there is nothing sensitive.

Under Windows start the "Computer Manager" and resize your disk. Give
yourself 20-30 Gb of disk for the OS and a reasonable amount of space
for files, programs, etc. If you can spare more fine. Make sure you
leave 20G free under Windows.

Make yourself a USB key for Ubuntu. There are several utilities to take
an ISO and put it on a USB key. If you have USB3 ports, use USB3 keys to
write the ISO file. It will go faster and install faster too.

Change your computer settings to first attempt to boot from USB, instead
of hard disk or CDROM. Otherwise, you will not be able to install Ubuntu.

Boot from the USB key and start the install. At the install type, Ubuntu
will detect Windows 10 and will offer you to install in the non-used
part of the disk. Go with that. 10-15 minutes later you should have a
dual-boot computer with Windows and Linux.

Actually, I checked the wrong name, and they are in USA. And this is
something that Linux-Gatineau could not use. Too bad...

I'd never heard of it until now. It seems OK technically, though it's
still not open. I am on another non-technical mailing list that's
currently on Yahoo Groups (blech...) and so I might suggest they look
at migrating to groups.io assuming the free tier meets their needs (they're
a non-profit with no money to spare.)

Dianne.

I see that the IP for group.io is in Germany.

Re: [linux] Ansible and Windows

2019-08-27 Thread Jean-Francois Messier

I guess it depends on the package to be installed. Anything that can be done
through GPO would be easier to manage but also less risky. Working directly in
the registry is never my first choice. And for the GPO editor, there are
modules that will be able to launch a process that will manage the GPO. And if
you're lucky, there may even be a module to deal directly with GPO. I have to
say that my daily work is on Linux servers, and I use Linux exclusively while
at home. Windows is only a dumb terminal to me.

And I'm far from being an expert in Windows. :-(

Re: [linux] Ansible and Windows

2019-08-27 Thread Jean-Francois Messier

Ansible can also be used to manage Windows servers. May modules have been
written to also cover Windows servers. As well, there are  Windows-specific
modules that will perform tasks in a Windows-specific way. Ansible works with
"playbooks" where you define some series of actions. Some of the generic
actions such as user creation or file management are generic and will be the
same for Windows as for Linux, while others like registry-based operations or
library registrations in the OS will have Windows-specific modules.

Have a nice day :-)

[linux] Computers for schools

2019-07-29 Thread Jean-Francois Messier
We are cleaning up our computer parts, nd have enough to have a working
PC. I may even have time to install some Linux. Is this something we can
bring to the meeting ?

Thanks :-)
