How to force a Linux kernel dump....?

2023-02-20 Thread Dave Jones
I have a client with an unresponsive zLinux guest. The client wants to
(somehow) force a kernel dump; but does not have access to either the 370
console or an SSH logon prompt.
What can he do here?
I have suggested doing a FOR zlinux CMD VMDUMP but that's not a
kernel dump.
Any ideas?
Many thanks.

DISLIN 11.5.0 ported to zLinux

2022-10-31 Thread Dave Jones
An early Christmas present.the DISLIN 11.5.0 graphics library has
been ported to Linux running as a guest of z/VM. From its web site
(https://www.dislin.de/index.html):

"DISLIN is a high-level plotting library for displaying data as curves,
[1] polar plots, [2] bar graphs, [3] pie charts, [4] 3D-color plots, [5]
surfaces, [6] contours [7] and maps [8].

DISLIN is intended to be a powerful and easy to use software package for
scientists and programmers. There are only a few graphics routines with
a short parameter list needed to display the desired graphical output. A
large variety of parameter setting routines can then be called to create
individually customized graphics."

I find it very useful for displaying z/VM performance data without the
need for shipping the data off-site.

Enjoy!

Re: Can zLinux detect when files arrive in the virtual reader?

2022-09-01 Thread Dave Jones
I have an (old) IBM SHARE presentation here on how to set up and use
SMSG on Linux I can send you. I think it is kind of a pain to set up but
it does work.

Another approach would be to have a simple TCPIP server running on
Linux.you put the information about the RDR file you just sent to
Linux into a packet, and send that packet to the TCPIP server. The
server then takes the packet and gets the spool id, file name, etc. and
then decides how to handle the RDR file that just arrived. No polling
involved.

Good luck.

Re: Fwd: Neale Ferguson's fsiucv package

2022-07-13 Thread Dave Jones
Hi, Neale.

I'm using Ubuntu 20.04 Linux here and there is no "/var/log/messages"
file to be found, sorry.

I do feel badly about causing you all this extra work, as well, so don't
feel you have to get this to work just you me. I have found an alternate
method of "talking" IUCV from CMS to z/Linux that works exactly as I
want it to, using the AF_IUCV family of socket calls. I've written a
simple server that runs on Linux that can be driven by a CMS application
using the RXIUCVFN Rexx function package, which is what I wanted to do
in the first place.

I'll be posting the code and a short "how-to" on GitHub when I can.

Take care.

Re: Neale Ferguson's fsiucv package

2022-07-09 Thread Dave Jones
Hello, all.

Well the patches seem to work. They were applied with no errors and the
fsiucv driver was successfully build using the "make ..." command. After
the "make" and "make tools" completed with no errors, I installed the
drive driver using the "insmod fsiucv.ko" command and a "lsmod" command
shows this:

Module Size Used by
fsiucv 20480 0
pkey 32768 0
zcrypt 106496 1 pkey

..

Now on to trying to use fsiucv. Since the "make tools" did not create
the "ricleint" application, I just compiled it by hand:

 gcc riclient.c

which completed with no errors, yielding the usual "a.out" file.

I have the RISERVER rexx code running on MAINT here, so I did the
following:

echo "maint" > /sys/devices/iucv/iucv0/target_user

echo "zVM72" > /sys/devices/iucv/iucv0/target_node

echo "RISERVER" > /sys/devices/iucv/iucv0/program_name

All the other entries under ".../iucv/iucv0" were left as is.

Running the a.out files yields this:

./a.out
open: Permission denied

All of the required IUCV settings for both guests have been applied as
well.

I'd like to buy a clue here, please. :-)

There's already code in vmur to handle unsolicited DE (it explicitly
ignores it). I'm not sure how add_uevent_var() works and how drivers
can
change the value of variable with kobject_uevent( KOBJ_CHANGE ), but
maybe
vmur could add "NEW_SPOOL_FILE" when it gets loaded, and change it's

Udev appears to be designed to handle device status changes, not just
hotplug events.

Aside from an IMSG, the reader will get an unsolicited DEVICE-END
interrupt indicating a transition from NOT READY to READY. This is the
same kind of interrupt that indicates
- a tape has been loaded in a drive and has reached load point,
- a disk pack has spun up to speed after being mounted (think 2314)
- you have powered on your 3270.

Bottom line, the device is ready to send or receive data.

Rats, I have to take that back. The smsgiucv_app driver only sees
SMSGs
that start with the characters "APP," so this won't work for virtual

Re: SYSASCII Console for Linux images

2021-03-04 Thread Dave Jones

This is a good idea, imho. Right now, as I understand things, the main
driver of the z architecture growth is Linux based workloads, so the
more we ("we" == IBM) can make the z platform behave like the other
platforms, the easier it will be for IBM to sell z boxes into
distributed-oriented sites. Robert's pints "a" and "b" address this
explicitly, and it's just another step in the evolution of the
mainframe.

Maybe we could try to hold a BoF about this topic at the upcoming VM
Workshop? Robert, are you planning on attending?
Take care.

If you virtualize it like pretend PCI devices ( similar to what KVM
does
internally for guests ) then Linux doesn't need any new drivers if you
emulate things that the kernel already knows how to talk to: Cirrus
Logic
VGA card, USB Keyboard & Mouse , possibly USB CDROM too and you can
pass
through an ISO mount from your remote desktop client.

This would do a bunch of things:
a) Installation now works like on every other Linux platform : remote
into
the LPAR / Guest using the same tools as every other platform ( VNC ,
SPICE, RemoteDesktop ) and you don't have to muck about with creating
a
custom parmfile at all - if we can remote media mount a .iso through
the
client to present as a USB attached DVD then it appears as local
install
media and you don't need a working IP stack for the installer anymore.
b) Fixing broken systems now works like every other Linux platform :
remote into the VNC / SPICE / RemoteDesktop link and fix the network
using
whatever suits your fancy. Full on X11 GUI if you really want to - go
for
it.
c) Hypervisor agnostic : since its basically fake PCI devices you
generate
as many as needed per LPAR and either use them directly from the LPAR
or
attach them to a specific guest. You would have to have some kind of
mapping of "PCI device group 1 is VNC desktop :1 " , and you would have
to
manage that from the HMC similar to what we do with OSA ICC profiles -
but
thats a solvable problem.

Nobody else I talked to thought it was cool though... :(

But if youuu guys asked for it as an official Requirement ... maybe
you
guys could make it cool ? ?

At the risk of teaching granny... the most common cause for reported
high
"steal percentage" in Linux is not CP overhead on I/O, but contention
for
CPU resources on z/VM and PR/SM level.
And when you see high %steal combined with %idle in the guest, then it
may
well be due to an application causing a high amount of polling (and
lowering the number of virtual CPUs closer to the allocated capacity
may be
helpful).

This would be in a rule file in /etc/udev/rules.d/ Breaking this
example
down, it sends "JAMES" a message letting me know that the smsgiucv_app
is
loaded up and ready. The ENV(SMSG_SENDER) makes sure only my userid
"JAMES"
is allowed to use this rule, otherwise it bails out.

Then the ACTION calls a script evaluating the sent info and sends the
response back.

version 12?

[...]

The Linux kernel now makes use of self-patching in several places and
several core
features would no longer work without those. To make NSS possible,
the NSS would
need to have a copy-on-write semantics instead of being read-only.
With global patching
we would copy almost everything over time making the feature not
useful.

So the feature was not only removed in SLES but will go away in other
future distros

and it is no longer part of the upstream kernel.

What's this? a little uptime funk? That's cool as long as it _doesn't
break other things_.

Seriously? You whacked NSS for live patching? Don't! (Too late.)

Bad enough all the PUTTERING around in userland, even INIT, but now the
kernel's borken too. Babies and bath-water both banished. Bummer!

Hey, hey, hey, HAY ... Stop! ... wait a minute ... I'm a fan of
advances

(hallelujah!), but not at the cost of flexibility.

I believe y'all killed XIP too, right? That was brilliant. (NOT)

Not all the world's containers (or whatever shiny thing). Don't believe
me? Just watch: I'll introduce you to a container escaper and

I just tried to build Chromium on the openSUSE Build Service. It failed
due to what seems like in-line assembler code in the source. I suspect
that there's not a pre-built binary out there, unless someone has gone
to a fair amount of trouble to get it to build. That no one has spoken
up in this mailing list would indicate that none of the usual suspects
have made that effort.

Linux "sleep" command not waking up under high CPU utilization

2018-04-18 Thread Dave Jones
Hello, gang.

I have a very simple bash script that runs a trivial data collection
task, and then does a Linux "sleep im" to wait a minute before running
the data collection task again. Under very high CPU loads (> 90%) I have
noticed that the "sleep" command does not seem to wake up after one
minute but instead wakes up 15 to 20 minutes later. This is on a Red Hat
6.9 guest running under z/VM 6.4 on a z12 box.

I would like to buy a clue here if I could.

Thanks.

THE LINUX FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES AN OPEN SOURCE REFERENCE HYPERVISOR
PROJECT DESIGNED FOR IOT DEVICE

The Linux Foundation

7-8 minutes
-

PORTLAND, Ore., March 13, 2018 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Embedded Linux
Conference – The Linux Foundation [4] today announced a new embedded
reference hypervisor project called ACRN(tm) (pronounced "acorn"). With
engineering and code contributions from Intel(R) Corporation, the
hypervisor was built with real-time and safety-criticality in mind, and
optimized to streamline embedded development. This project will provide
a framework for industry leaders to build an open source embedded
hypervisor specifically for the Internet of Things (IoT).

ACRN is comprised of two main components: the hypervisor and its device
model, complete with rich I/O mediators. Intel's experience and
leadership in virtualization technology was key to the initial
development of this hypervisor solution.

"With project ACRN, embedded developers have a new, immediately
available hypervisor option," said Jim Zemlin, executive director of The
Linux Foundation. "ACRN's optimization for resource-constrained devices
and focus on isolating safety-critical workloads and giving them
priority make the project applicable across many IoT use cases. We're
pleased to welcome project ACRN and invite embedded developers to get
involved in the new community."

Developers benefit from ACRN's small, real-time footprint, which is
flexible enough to accommodate different uses and provides consideration
for safety-critical workloads. Consolidating a diverse set of IoT
workloads with mixed-criticality on to a single platform helps reduce
both development and deployment costs allowing for a more streamlined
system architecture. An example of this is the electronic control unit
(ECU) consolidation in automotive applications. While open source
hypervisor options are available today, none share ACRN's vision of an
open source hypervisor solution optimized for embedded and IoT products.

"ACRN will have a Linux-based service OS and the ability to
simultaneously run multiple types of guest operating systems, providing
a powerful solution for workload consolidation," said Imad Sousou,
corporate vice president and general manager of the Open Source
Technology Center, at Intel(R) Corporation. "This new project delivers a
flexible, lightweight hypervisor, designed to take real-time and
safety-critical concerns into consideration and drive meaningful
innovation for the IoT space."

ACRN will incorporate input from the open source, embedded, and IoT
developer communities and encourages collaboration and code
contributions to the project. Early ACRN project members include
ADLINK(R), Aptiv(R), Intel(R) Corporation, LGE(R), and Neusoft(R)
Corporation. To learn more about the project, visit
https://www.projectacrn.org [5].

SUPPORTING QUOTES

"The lack of open source virtualization solutions for embedded,
real-time, and safety-critical systems has been greatly hindering
consolidation and to some extent the most interesting forms of fog
computing," commented Angelo Corsaro, chief technology officer of ADLINK
Technology Inc. "The release of ACRN as a Linux Foundation project by
Intel will be a game changer as it brings the agility and manageability
of virtualized environments into embedded and real-time systems. This
will be a key enabler toward making the Industrial Internet of Things
happen for real."

"This approach from Intel fits very well within our product roadmap and
is a welcomed approach that will meet our customers' desire to have more
open source reference solutions," said Lee Bauer, vice president,
Mobility Architecture Group of Aptiv. "Aptiv is excited to be a part of
this new project, ACRN, and with it usher in a new era of flexibility
and scalability for our mobility IoT product solutions."

"Because ACRN will allow for faster feasibility checking of ECU
consolidation, it will benefit our growing vehicle components business,"
said Seongpyo Hong, vice president of LG Electronics. "As a result, we
will be able to respond more quickly to OEMs' customized requirements
and will continue

This PSIRT blog is where IBM will post the Official Statements about
this
issue, though you can expect, as Bill just pointed out, to see more
details for Z in the IBM Z Security Portal.

I know that as technicians it's frustrating, but if you are hearing
out-of-band information from small-badge IBMers (like me), ignore it and

use the portal and blog instead. Please don't look for anything from us
other than pointers back to those resources, whether online or offline.

Check them often for updates.

Agreed, Mauro.

Python is not installed on these zPDT servers. I just used yast and
installed the "thttpd" HTTP server. Once it is installed all you have to
do is start it; no configuration needed.

Here's what appears to be the actual error, from y2log:

File '/repodata/repomd.xml' not found on medium

Some more background:

The FTP server is running on: openSUSE Leap 42.1 (x86_64)

There is a short writeup of how to build a terminal server here:

The ed command works fine, but you need to understand how to use it. It's ...
different.

I frequently use sed, but if you're at the point where the root file system is
mounted, you should be able to use the terminal server access. This allows you
to SSH to the terminal server, then connect to the target system and use the
normal vi/vim editors.

This might be of use to the group here.Rob van der Heij has written
an NTP client in CMS Pipelines. It can be found at:

He says he wrote it to be able to explore leap seconds and STP/ETR the
System z hardware platform.

Have fun.

STP does not generate a sync check for leap seconds, they are not

included in

the TOD clock. The programming notes in the PoP about the Time-of-Day

Clock

you will find this:

"In converting to or from the current date or time, the programming

support

must take into account that leap seconds have been inserted or deleted
because of time-correction standards. When the TOD clock has been set
correctly to a time within the standard epoch, the sum of the

accumulated

leap seconds must be subtracted from the clock time to determine UTC

time."

... and we're off to the races. :-)

You're right, I got it backwards. I seem to do so every time I come back
to this after several months. I also didn't mean 'sync check'. I meant
the more generic "STP notification." :-)

Time is a complicated subject. Just ask Stephen Hawking. Ignoring the
effects of gravity, there are still many moving parts needed to figure out
what time it is.
- The common frame of reference for the TOD clock
- TOD synchronization with NTP
- The ability of the OS and its apps to accurately calculate "now".

Here's what STP does:
1) Based on NTP, calculate what the proper TOD clock value should be.
2) Steer the machines in the STP timing network to that value.

That's it - it's that simple. Well, it's simple to say, but much harder
to do.

For the purists in the room (I am one of them), the TOD clock needs to be
set as defined in the Principles of Operations. That means using the
Standard Epoch, where a TOD clock value of zero represents 0h 1/1/1900.
And that means STP needs to know about leap seconds!

If you leave out the leap seconds, then every leap second that is
introduced moves the start of the TOD clock epoch backward one second. In
such a system, if I looked at your TOD clock value now and started
counting down to zero, it would be 23:59:34 Dec 31, 1899.

Is that a sin? No. But it complicates things when you want to compare
TOD clock values in multiple systems to determine the order of events! All
systems within a System of Systems need to agree on "What time WAS it?" as
much as "What time IS it?" Such information may be needed for forensics
and failure to have a proper time stamp could bring the validity of any
evidence into question.

And while your lawyer can help you squirm your way out of the quagmire
between leap seconds, the introduction of the next one is the fatal blow.

Here's how it works: STP is watching the NTP stream. It calculates the
desired TOD clock value based on UTC and adjusts the TOD clock to match.
As long as two values are within 50us, we are happy. The sun is shining,
a gentle breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the mosquitoes
aren't biting. Our picnic is going famously!

Then there is a thunderclap and bolt of lighting. While the TOD clock has
been steadily incrementing, the leap second arrives and stops time. But
it doesn't stop the TOD clock. As said above, STP looks at UTC calculates
the desired TOD and compares it to the actual TOD. The actual TOD is one
second ahead of where it should be!

 +---+
 | EGAD! |
 +---++--+
 ||
 //
 \\

That's a number WAY larger than 50us. The tornady's a-comin', run for
cover! The next thing you know, there's blowing dirt in your eyes, the
ants are crawling on your food, and you have big welts on your body from
the mosquitoes! STP flies into action: "Don't worry Tod, I'll save you!"

STP notifies all LPARs that have registered for the signal that the TOD
clock has lost synchronization. At the same time STP starts slowing the
TOD clock. In about 7 hours, the TOD clock will be back within 50us of
UTC and the registered LPARs will be notified that the clock is now back
in sync. Calm returns, the dust settles, and the TOD clock is trustworthy
once again.

But silently, unobserved in the shadows, the TOD clock epoch has now moved
one second further back into 1899. In a word, "Eeee!"

Any TOD clock values from before the leap second that are still being used
(e.g. in timers) are no longer valid. Maybe being off by a second is ok,
maybe it isn't. How do I know? I worry more about legal and forensic
issues than the practical aspects of the difference.

When you include the leap
