Re: Experiences with Oracle 10g Database on Linux for zSeries

2005-02-04 Thread Harris, Christopher
I know Oracle 10g isn't certified for use on SLES 9 (64bit), but I
thought I might try and install it. Has anybody managed to do this ? Or
would I just be wasting my time ?
As our zLinux install is relatively new we went straight on to SLES 9, I
am loathe to install SLES 8 in another LPAR just so I can get Oracle
running.
Thanks

If you can wait just a little while, it will be certified. The next
pathset, if I'm not mistaken, will have SLES9 certification.

And while you're at it, it doesn't hurt to try.

Indeed, Oracle 10g for Linux on zSeries is 64-bit only. It will not run on
9672 hardware. You must have the s390x version of SLES8 or SLES9. It is
not certified on SLES9 yet, but it does work. I think RHES is certified
but I am not sure.

Thanks for the info. Very timely for us.

I expect the Oracle 10g for Linux/390 (the 31 bit
stuff) on my desk by early January. But since
management ordered it, I assumed that they ordered the
64 bit version instead of what we can use G.

Re: Experiences with Oracle 10g Database on Linux for zSeries

2004-12-28 Thread Tom Duerbusch
You might be right about that.

On the Oracle download side, it shows 10g for z/Linux (I read that as
zSeries which is 64 bit).

For Oracle 9, it shows for Linux/390 (which I read as 31 bit).

So, we may have ordered the wrong one.

Or more likely, we ordered 10g for Linux/390 and someone at Oracle is
trying to find out why he can't check the box or order itG.

Oracle 10g is 64-bit only. There will not be a 32-bit release for
zSeries/390. If it's important I can get someone from Oracle to document
it.

Re: Experiences with Oracle 10g Database on Linux for zSeries

2004-12-28 Thread Little, Chris
From Barry Perkins, a VP at Oracle, and manages z/OS and Linux for zSeries
releases.

Chris,

Sure...

Oracle Database 10g for z/Linux is 64-bit with no plans for a 31-bit
implementation. It currently is supported with SLES8 (64-bit) and will
support RHAS4 and SLES9 with the 10.1.04 patchset (March 2005 target).

Oracle9i for Linux/390 is 31-bit only with no plans for a 64-bit
implementation and supports SLES8 (31-bit and 64-bit).

Oracle Application Server 10g (10.1.2) is planned with a target of Q3CY2005.

So, for those Oracle types, how close is a install
of Oracle for zSeries Linux (64 bit) on Suse 8.0
(which is what the document is for, verse our
situation of Oracle for Linux/390 on Suse 9.0?

Just wondering how worth while it is for me to follow
the document (along with any Oracle related
documentation).

If the document applies to my environment, I will use
it and write any changes/corrections on it. I could
be talked into sending the changes in, in some form,
to form a supplement and/or corrections.
