I'm running my K6-2 450 on an FIC PA-2013 revision 2 board with one
meg cache. But if I had to do it again, I would more than likely pick
up an Epox EP-MVP3G2. FIC's tech support leaves a lot to be desired,
while I've heard nothing but good things about Epox and their
products.

Mind you, I have no complaints about my board...I just think that FIC
is a little screwy in general. :) My 450 is running great @ 112 x 4

Here's the spec page for the Epox board:

You should have spent some time reading these newsgroups instead
of fiddling with your winmodem. There are about 10 messages
a day which state that winmodems don't work, and can't be made
to work, under Linux (unless the manufacturer supplies a Linux
driver or interface specs, which none do at present).

I can't imagine why it would matter. Use the standard CD-ROM if you can,
it's almost certainly much faster.

Does anyone know whether this CD-RW will work under linux (I can't find any
specific information in any of the FAQs). If it doesn't work, can I still
use it to read CDs, as I am not too bothered about writing CDs from linux?

I have a Creative 4224 Blaster CD-RW on this system, and it works fine. If
2224 isn't a typo for this model, though, I can't help you.

Well I have a SIS 620 , which is pretty similar, kinda needed more
information, do you get this error when you try to go into 16, 24, and 32
bit modes ? or is this just 8 bit mode ?

I am having some hassles with a SiS 530 motherboard (Gigabyte Socket 7
board).
I am trying to get X working, however I seem to be observing some funnies
when using
the XFCom Server from Suse (running on a RedHat installation).

Hi. I am trying to get xcdroast-0.96e running in Mandrake 6.0.
Actually, it already runs, but I have a Philips CDRW400 series drive and
it is ATAPI IDE. The docs say to compile tthe kernel with generic SCSI
driver and to turn off generic IDE support. This doesn't seem to do
anything. My system still seems to boot in normal IDE mode and when the
SCSI module starts up it detects no host adapter. What am I missing
here? I'm sure someone else must have agonized over this one before..

Please reply with email as I don't read the few hundred posts a day that
come up here :)

Thanks In Advance

I am noticing some file corruption with RedHat 6.0. I was thinking it may
either be Samba, my HD, or my IDE controller. Someone told me that there
were problems with my IDE controller chipset (CMD 640 I believe). I cannot
get into the bios, and I believe it is also running in CHS mode (the HD is a
1.7 and should, by all accounts, be in LBA).

Could someone please help me?

Email me, please, if you can.

Run 'fdisk /mbr' from dos/windows to reinstall the master boot record.
This will remove lilo and fix the problem.

I'd like to echo the opinions expressed by others, if your machine is
not prone to hang/crash etc at present then it probably does not require
extra cooling. However, a few points to note:

When setting up the 1st few early Pentium machines for customers, we had
tremendous cooling problems, having to carefully source cases to allow
air flow over the processor etc...we even ended up with some tower cases
with two fans drawing air in (one pointing at the processor, one at the
then brand new 4Gb SCSI drives which ran frighteningly hot and died in 6
months until we started using the extra fan), a fan on the processor,
and two fans drawing air outok, the extra extractor fan was
overkill, but we got fed up of the damn things crashing after being on a
few hours we just went into fan frenzy!

These machines had problems all through the next few years, from the
hard drives failing (running at 60-80 degrees C is NOT good for them,
which is the sort of temps we monitored on the drives themselves without
that extra fan), to RAM chips needing re-seating (heating/cooling cycles
and all that)even with all the fans in, we ended up having to make
call-outs (they'd got us on a 2 hour response contract too!) to replace
fans with bearings getting noisyone ended up sounding like an
aeroplane starting up as the fan made the whole case vibrate with the
harmonics.

Anyway...my point?...ermyes, fans can be essential, but they are not
a good solution. The point someone made about keeping the inside of the
case clean is a good one, but please, not a domestic vacuum cleaner!
They tend to generate a large amount of static around the nozzle, and if
there is one thing you don't want, its static zapped components...or
even, static stressed components (liable to fail sooner). So, my
advice, if the machine is a vital one, get a good case with a good
airflow to start with without extra fans. Monitor the temp (get a multi
meter with a thermo couple input calibrated to read temp straight off)
of various components and plan your airflow accordingly. Keep the
inside of the case clean (use filtered fans, but be aware they have less
airflow) by regular and careful professional cleaning equipment, and
whatever you don, don't start frying eggs on the hot bits! :-)

I remember a comment by one of the designers of the Cray super computers
many years ago, that they were not so much computer designers as
plumbers, (I can't remember the exact wording, but I believe this was
the gist of the comment) a reference to how heat dissipation was more of
a problem than anything else:-)

If anyone has comments to make on this rambling post, please CC my
e-mail too, as I don't get to check the news groups too often

If the last one, any ideas/links, how exactly could I do this?
What soft do I need? Didn't find anything on "null-modem on linux"
so far. Any disadvantages?

Using ethernet cards would be a lot easier to set up, easier to expand,
and be faster. However, it is more expensive. Having said that, my local
computer shop has used 10Base-T NICs for $5 each. Occasionally they have
a 3Com 509B for $10.

If you are strapped for cash and willing to figure out the routing, the
null modem solution will be slow, but will work.

If the first one (ethernet), what will happen if the hub is "10/100"
2 out of 3 NIC are 10/100 pci, but one NIC just needs to be ISA (old
machine). Is there any 10/100 ISA cards out there?

Yes, for example the 3Com 3c515. You can argue both ways on whether this
a cost effective route.

Does it make any sense to have 10/100 hub if one of the cards is 10 at most?
Will it work with it at all?
Any suggestions/links/advice - strongly appreciated.

You will notice the difference in speed-- get the high speed hub.

I am running Linux on an old Pentium 60 with 48MB and its time to speed
things up. I would like to upgrade, or renew, my system by plugging in a
new motherboard, processor, memory and, at a later stage, harddisk and
video card.

I would like to try a dual celeron system with the Abit BP6 board and
not I am looking for some advice. On the net I've found many reports of
people using this board and overclocking the processors but I'm not
quite sure which solution is best. So if anyone has some first hand
experience please let me know!!

Look, overlocking is a RISK. I understand that when I go to
buy 3 Celeron 366's, that probably 2 of them will work stably
at 550. The other I eat the cost of (actually put it in GirlFriend
PC running at stock 366), as I find it unethical to expect my
local Mom Pop to take a chip back as defective when it isn't.
At any rate, OC if you want but realize it's for the tinkerer.
For people scared of overclocking, I recommend just buying
a pair of Celeron 400's or whatever and running them at
their rated speed. They are still pretty damn fast! You
wouldn't see the diff between 66 and 100 MHz FSB operation
in anything but the most esoteric applications. It's over-rated.
For me 100 MHz FSB is just a safe point at which to run my
cheap 366 Celerons overclocked, without also overclocking my
PCI or AGP bus, as at both 66 and 100 the dividers take care
of making sure the PCI is at 33 and the AGP at 66. At other speeds
like 83 you are overclocking your PCI and AGP bus as well, and
I'd rather not bring that many variables into play.

First about the dual processor board. If I'm right its a matter of
replacing the old board (my old PCI video card and IDE drives should
still work) install the SMP kernel RPM. Liliconf and reboot,
finished. Is it really that simple or am I overlooking something?

Yep. That simple.

What about memory on the BP6 board. Most boards have 4 SIMM connectors
and you have to use 2 (+ 2) identical SIMM modules. The BP6 board has 3
SIMM connectors. Can I use just 1 128MB SIMM module or do I have to use
at least two modules (e.g. 2 modules of 64MB)? What about the so

Subject: Tekram DC-395U driver ?
Date: Sat, 21 Aug 1999 22:15:26 +0200

Hallo *!

How can I make my new Tekram DC-395U SCSI controller work?
It bases on the new Tekram chip TRM-S1040 which is directly supported by
Tekram for Linux.
(You can download a driver from their ftp-site.)
So I tried to compile the driver with 2.2.11 but it didn´t work.
These are the errors:

In file included from dc395x_trm.c:61:
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/bios32.h:11: warning: #warning This driver
uses the old PCI interface, please fix it (see Documentation/pci.txt)

(Shall I really try it?)

/usr/src/linux/include/linux/bios32.h:32: warning:

/usr/src/linux/include/linux/modules/pcisyms.ver:4: warning: this is the

dc395x_trm.c:3909: warning: `DC395x_trm_release' defined but not used

How can I find out if there are some developers who already try to fix
this?

Thank you..

Bye, Michael

I just strolled on to SIS's web site , and found that they finally have
linux support for my card, I finally got high colour depth now, and
everything works great, well with me it only works in 2048x1024 mode for
8,16, and 24 bit modes. I can get 1024x768 in 32 bit mode. You can find the
answer at

www.sis.com.tw

 Hi Allix,
I did the same, and I still have a lot of problems, can't see much
 difference can you?

 Regards,
 John.

How the hell would you login to the system then??? If you mean you want a
graphical login, then change the first uncommented line in /etc/inittab
from:

id:3:initdefault:

to this:

id:5:initdefault:

second..can Linux read from my FAT32 hard drive? i've been getting
errors trying to read from hda(that's my c: and windows) and how can i
make LILO dual boot my machine between w95 and Linux?

Linux can read FAT32. Make sure you have the module inserted or support
compiled into the kernel. As far as dual booting, check the LILO howto at
sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/linux.html It is very good. Also there is a
Linux+Win95 howto there.

fourthhow do i access cdrom and my d: FAT1632meg (assuming it can).

What device is your CDROM? Master or slave? Which IDe channel? Or is it
SCSI?

fifth.how do i set up my modem and sblive? (can they be set up
 anyway??)

If it is a WinModem - you cant. it wont work. buy a new one. SBLive is
only supported with very early beta drivers. Linux does not support this
card natively because Creative wont release the specs on it.

sixth..how do i make the KDE instead of gnome my default interface
 when starting the X thingy?

take a look at /etc/X11/prefdm. What file is it pointing to? gdm or kdm?
set it to kdm.

seventh...how do i connect to the internet?

Go back to sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/linux.html and read the HOWTO for this as
well. Its very good. A hint though - use the network configurator from
redhat's control-panel to add a PPP device - then activate the connection.
I assume you'll be using a plain old analog modem to get on the net.

i dont have any linux/unix knowledge...
 there are my soft specs...

 d: FAT16 32 meg (if 32 matters)
 e: FAT32
