Any NE2000 :)

I have used SN3200 and 3com 3c905, and a 3com 3c509b (etherlink III) for
web/ftp/ and NFS..

I like the 3com cards best since it is generic enough for any OS.
The SN3200 comes in PCI :)

Sorry about the xposts -- following the original.

Thanks to Ken McCord for the BULLSHIT non-answer (I've already gotten
the Deja News posts, but they still do not answer the question.

Thanks to Robert Taylor for at least trying. So far his solutions
haven't worked.

Now, to the crux of the problem: What the HELL is really necessary to
connect from Linux (RedHat 5.2, which has the latest pppd version --
ends in a 5, but I can't get to it since I'm logged on via Win98) to
Bell Atlantic's network (bellatlantic.net). I got the DNS info from a
Deja News search.

Interestingly, I also got an email response from Bell Atlantic. While
they continued to profess their non-support of *NIX, they did provide
step-by-step instructions (which DID NOT WORK). A flat statement they
made is that DNS info is not necessary, since it is supplied by their
system upon connect. It is also a fact that they use PAP.

So what have I tried without success? Just about everything I have
been able to find:

1. RedHat's netcfg
2. RedHat's Linuxconf
3. WvDial
4. ezppp
5. kppp (KDE's nifty ppp set-up program)
6. manual editing of relevant files
7. trying to log-on manually with minicom
8. trying to log-on manually with HyperTerminal in Win98 (a different
modem - more about modems below)
9. trying to create everything from the shell (all others were in X)

To accomplish all the above has required a great deal of reading and
searching Web pages, FTP sites and newsgroups for things to read.
Bottom line: NO FUCKING CONNECTION -- after roughly 2 weeks!

First I thought the problem was a Lucent Technologies 56K v.90 modem
which worked (and works) fine under Win98. Even though I asked the
salesman whether it was a Winmodem, and was assured it IS NOT, turns
out it is. So I installed an older PNP 33.6 modem (after disabling PNP
and setting it to COM2 - or in Linux, cau1, which I access as
/dev/modem).

BellAtlantic.net provides no apparent "login" or "name" prompt and no
"password" prompt. What comes after CONNECT is a lot of "garbage."
Shortly after that, I get:

"Timeout expired while waiting for the PPP interface to come
up."

The detail of this shows: "Terminated on signal 15."

Some of the X methods simply show that "pppd has died."

Historically, I have demonstrated that I am NOT STUPID! (Try 99th
percentile in IQ.) But I sure feel that way after this experience.

BTW, Linux is working just fine otherwise, including my KDE desktop.
My vfat and Linux partitions are peacefully coexisting and regularly
access files on the vfat partitions under Linux. Matter of fact, I am
even running a Linux program from the Win98 C:\ drive, mounted as
dev/hda1 win_98.

If only I could get connected to my ISP (BellAtlantic) and the rest of
the world!

To this end, someone please help. I am obiously missing something --
and suspect that BellAtlantic's PPP and PAP methods are the real
culprits. For that reason, I hope those who respond ARE using Linux
(or Unix) to connect to BellAtlantic.net successfully.

Thanks one hell of a lot -- sincerely and truly.

The Baron

Be more specific, we're not psychics here :) When running X do

startx some settings here &> out_from_x

and post the file containing diagnostic messages here.

Also check the hardware how-to to see if Mwave is supported. Last time
I checked it was just "beta" level driver support.

Try:

aha152x=0x340,11,7,0 instead -- the 0 disables the SCSI reconnect .

Worked for me on my old TI 4000M laptop...

If you wanna be on the secure side, buy a SCSI-device
( yes, higher price, but less trouble ) and
check Schilys cdrecord site for a list of supported drives
at
http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/private/cdrecord.html
Also check the link to the "CD Building project" to see some
other related software ( and their supported hardware )
- e.g. cdrdao ( best software I've ever seen to write audio CDs)

First of all, the FAQ at unc.edu is obsolete; you can get the latest
at http://www.guug.de/~winni/linux/cdr/. Even so, in the area of
SCSI emulation of ATAPI devices, good information is hard to find.

See ftp://ftp.fokus.gmd.de/pub/unix/cdrecord/README.ATAPI and note
in particular that you do NOT have to disable generic IDE support.
This excerpt is of special interest:

Here is a hint from Alan Brown <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
To allow ATAPI cd and ide-scsi support on the same machine, add
`hd=ide-scsi` to the lilo.conf append entry, or use
`hd=ide-scsi` at the bootup lilo prompt.

It's possible that your version of X doesn't support your Starfighter card. You
might want to check if the latest version of XFree86 (3.3.3) supports your card
(http://www.xfree86.org).

At the same time, I would suggest that you don't start trying by using 32bpp (32
bits-per-pixel) as resolution. Try using 8bpp (use "startx -bpp 8") instead.

As for the Xconfigurator problem, insert your RedHat CD (if you got one), cd to
RedHat/RPMS and try using the rpm located there. In RedHat-5.2, that would be:

$ mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
$ cd /mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS
$ ls Xconf*
Xconfigurator-3.82-1.i386.rpm
$

After that, install it:
$ rpm -i Xconfigurator-3.82-1.i386.rpm

Xconfigurator should now run without problems.

If you don't have a Redhat CD, the RPM can be found on most "main" FTP servers.

Let me know of your progress.

I've found the following boot image and instructions for the ncr53c8xx.o
controller at redhat.com/support/docs/rhl/rh5.2-errata-general.html. The
problem is I don't know how to create a bootable floopy with the
"boot.img" and "supp.img" files. I've tried the following "dd" commands:

*dd if=/home/rtp/bootdisk/boot.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=8192
*dd=/home/rtp/bootdisk/boot.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k
These builds resulted in "failed boot" while initrd is loading.

Do I need this updated image (forgive me, I am very new to linux)? If
I do need the updated boot.img can someone give me instructions for
building the bootable floppy. Meanwhile, I'll be attempting to decipher
the man pages and any other clues I can find. Thanks Much!

Since you resolved your problems and are smarter than everyone in the group,it would
be nice if you
shared your wealth of knowledge of Linux with others.

I have a 486 that I am attempting to install redhat 5.1 on. My problem is
that the install program hangs on the SCSI initialization step of install.
I pass the kernel the parameters

aha152x=0x340,11,7

at the point it asks for them, then it just sits and spins the cdrom, which
was succesfully detected earlier. Is there something more I should be
doing?

I find it interesting that the SCSI HDD LED comes on durng the
initialization of the CD ROM.

Any help is apreciated.

Has any of you used Kingston-40T ethernet card under linux? Is it supported?
What about its efficiency in a server?

Thanks

I have e generic atapi cdrom 36x that is behaving in the same
manner--very peculiar.
It times out when I try and install a package from the x11 directory of
the debian hamm disk the top most directory. it just spins down and
spits out I/O errors to the console. I know its not the disk and the
cdrom works fine in w95. I'm wondering if the kernel driver is not
configured to handle the time that

I got my new Epson 640 to work with Aladdin ghostscript 5.5 using the
uniprint "device"; from my /usr/lib/ps2epson640.fltr filter:

gs @stc.upp -q -sOutputFile=- -

A test file (color PS) printed wit it and an HP 895Cse were nearly
identical; the Epson print being a touch warmer. This done on Slackware
3.4, upgraded to 2.0.36; and both printers controlled by Axis 540
printservers.

Hi,
slow printers might also be due to the lpt driver under linux,=20
(undocumented / non standart timing on newer epson / HP printer),=20
however, this is fixed in newer kernels (2.1.131 / 2.0.36 - I belive,=20
ckeck out yourself)

And remember, a Laser has to store a page in memory, where as a inkjet=20
is so slow, it doesn=B4t need to store a whole page of printout in=20
memory, and you wouldn=B4t like it to do so (or would you like to get=20
100MBytes for your printer). However, a large printer memory just=20
would cut down the time the PC has to spool data to the printer, not=20
the printout time itself.

Hi everyone,
I'm new with Linux, and started by instaling Red Hat 5.3.
Everything works except for some of my hardware. It is detected by SaX, but
under KDE I can't put to work/configure.
The hardware is the following:

- Video Highway Extreme (TV & radio PCI card)
- Zoltrix 33.600 HSP336i (Winmodem)
- Aztech SC-128 PCI audio card
- Diamond Monster 3d (3DFX card)

If anyone could help configuring these above, it would be excelent, for I
can't work with it so far.
Thanks to all.

Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 23:27:47 GMT

Hello,

I recently upgraded from Linux 2.0.35 to 2.0.36, and, much to my
surprize, MVP3 UDMA isn't supported in this kernel! Or is it? I
can't find a single trace of the Jumbo patch in the kernel source.

Can this patch be safely applied to the 2.0.36 kernel? How do I get
UDMA support with Linux on my MVP3 motherboard?

Thanks for any and all tips, useful URLS and other help.
