I'm using a WD200BB and after enabling udma I get 150+mbs buffer-cache
reads and 30+mbs buffered reads. This WD drive is similar to the IBM you are
considering. If you are going to use an internal PCI modem then I would
getthe USR 2977/2976. I am using a 700mhz Duron unmodified and am
able to run it at 728mhz (104x7) and still have the BIOS optimized. I have
not changed the BIOS but I did back it up to diskette. I am happy with
the m/b. It runs win98se and RH7.0 ( 2.2.16-22 kernel)

Hope this helps.

Hello,

I would like to know what DVD writers/players + CD writers/players
(4 in one) work best with Linux and what the current price on these
items is. All recommendation are greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Neil

Got $5000 for a dvd writer? You might as well just shove it in a windows box
and decidate that computer for the task.

Keep in mind that dual layer writing isn't available yet under 6 figures.

I have to compile a kernel (2.2.16) that have to work with ethernet. therefor
I want that the nic epic100 aka SMC EtherPower II (SMC9432
serie) is in this kernel. This card have to be added by hand into
.config-file ('CONFIG_EPIC100').

After I've done 'make dep' and 'make'/'make bzImage' there is a file named
epic100.o in the './drivers/net' directory but it is not in in the
compiled kernel (I searched with 'strings vmlinux|grep epic' in the
uncompressed kernel). The other NICs which I also compiled in are there
(ie: eepro100) but even not this card.

GeForce2 MX isn't supported by RH7. Get the nvidia drivers at

Was the card compiled as a module or into the kernel. If the file was
compiled as a module, then it needs to be placed into the /lib/modules/ directory hierarchy. After you have done your make, you do a make
modules and a make modules_install, don't you ?

See ya

Anyone know anything about these things? I'm going to have to write a

Is there any documentation around on how to work with these things?

i've installed RedHat Linux 7.1 with kernel 2.4.4 on my compaq armada, it works great,
but
there are 2 problems

1st problem, the battery works for ~30 minutes only (it's not defective)
i've activated all relevant PM settings in the kernel ...

2nd problem, i don't get the IRDA port working, 'findchip' finds
absolutely nothing :-(

is there someone out who can help me??

kind regards

The SCSI bus can host a variety of non-disk devices, too, and disks
are handled similarly for each adapter, so adapter and disk support
are completely separated -- but of course disks are dependent on the
adapter.

Check what you see in /proc/scsi/scsi and /proc/scsi/ncr53c8xx/0 (just
"cat" them). The first should list the devices deteted on your SCSI
bus(es), the second should give a detail view about your adapter.

Err, this is a really difficult question to answer unless we know what
your needs are. How much data are you talking about? What's your budget?
Is speed critical (how big is your backup window)? Are seek times
important (i.e. pulling out single files vs. entire images)? Details,
details, details.

>From some recent reports I've heard, Exabyte as a company is on the ropes
and doesn't have much of a plan for getting off them. I've seen a few
(very knowledgeable) people recommend against Mammoth2 drives partially
for that reason (although there seems to be a reliability issue as well).

All that being said, here's a data point. For nightly backups of about
43 partitions of varying size, I use an Exabyte Eliant 820, bought recently
to replace an aging 8505 (thus why *I* went with Exabyte for that one).
That drive does 7GB native on cheap (~$5) tapes, and does hardware
compression.

For monthly archival backups, I use a Sony SDX-300C, an AIT-1 drive. AIT
is a Sony proprietary technology, but Sony isn't in any trouble and has
a solid roadmap for AIT. The AIT-1 does 35GB native on expensive (~$70)
tapes. AIT-2 drives (currently available) do 50GB native. AIT-3 is
around the corner.

I haven't had much luck with DAT drives, but, then again, I haven't used
many of them. YMMV. Give us more specific needs, and we can give you more
suggestions.

Yes, it is a SCSI drive.

Here is the output from /sbin/lsmod:

Module Size Used by
e100 37468 1 (autoclean)
ncr53c8xx 51424 6

I don't know how to tell if the st module is loaded.

The /dev/st0 does exist and I have run "/dev/MAKEDEV st" and it created a
bunch of /dev/st entries such as st0, st0a, sta0l, sta0m.

Have you tried the VESA driver in XFree86 4.x? The VESA driver allowed me to
bring up X on an unsupported Radeon VE (normal Radeon's are supported, but the
