UPS with USB that can be monitored from Linux

Hello,

I am looking for UPS that can be monitored from Linux with following
requirements:

* Can be purchased in Israel (as well as a spare batteries)
* Have output of 800+ Watts for 10+ minutes (to hold several computers)
* Can be monitored over USB connector (of type B), and not over RS-232 port.
* Works with program nut
(allows to see information on power exists/absent, minutes-of-power
left, battery needs replacement indication).

Recommendations?

Re: 301 Debian repository permenantly moved

2007-06-08 Thread Arieh Skliarouk

Hello,

I suggest to make up a independent domain name for the debian mirror
in Israel. The domain should be used to point directly and only to the
debian mirror, so there would be no problems to point it to some other
place (should the need arise).

If you can use ftp.il.debian.org - perfect. If not, create
debian.hamakor.org.il.

Then, create corresponding apache virtual server entry on
mirrors.isoc.org.il server and advertise the new domain name only.

* You should warn people in advance (here and not on

* The new address is not working, but following works
  http://isoc.org.il/pub/debian

* The address is used in many places, including on many installation
CDROMs, there must be *VERY* serious reason to changing it. IMHO, lack
of space is not. There even was no call for help or donations!

* If there is no choice, at least make effort to point
ftp.il.debian.org to the new server, and advertse that instead.

Re: Linux Friendly ? - Musings

Hi,

I have similar idea, with focus on open (opposite of locked-in) lifestyle
in Israel. To concentrate on Linux is too narrow vision. The site would have
recommendations for services in Israel that don't try to force users to a
specific way of doing things:

  - Allow (or even encourage) usage of standards compliant browsers
  Various websites
  - React reasonably to the fact, that customer uses open technologies
  (Linux,BSD,OOo,etc).
  ISPs, cable/ADSL, etc
  - Use open platforms themselves
  - Avoid lock-in of customers into their technologies (Unlike some
printer vendors suing 3rd party ink producers).

Linux friendly hardware RAID card in Israel

2007-04-15 Thread Arieh Skliarouk

Hi,

Can anyone recommend me Linux friendly hardware RAID card with following
features:

  - Available for purchase from Israel company or reseller
  - SATA support for 4 drives or more
  - Open source driver included in latests 2.6 kernel
  - Must support true HW RAID[0,1,5] raid, when BIOS and Linux see only
  single disk (unlike Promise cards).
  - Consequence of previous two requirements: debian 4.0 can install
itself onto the RAID (configured from BIOS), out-of-the-box.
  - hot-swap is not necessary, the system can be powered off for
  maintenance sometimes.

Thank you in advance!

Firefox and egov:fines payment

2007-02-14 Thread Arieh Skliarouk

Hello,

I tried to pay my fine using web interface on following URL:
http://ecom.gov.il/police

Unfortunately, each time I filled name, date, fine amount and pressed
Ishur, the system returned me to the same page, with highlighted error
message, that if there are discrepancies between your data and data at the
police, the data at the police are correct. And nothing else.

I called the phones mentioned on Contacts page and always got to
auto-answering machine, suggesting to leave contact details, so that they
could call me back. Are they expecting me to be next to the computer,
internet, browser, available for tests whenever they happen to have time?!

The support woman called me back once, though, and after basic checks and
asserts that the site does support mozilla browsers, she stated that she can
not help me.

Thus, so far I have several questions:

Have anybody managed to pay fines electronically using the firefox or
mozilla browsers?

Is there way to formally complain about the cross-browsers support on the
(taxes supported) site?

Are there any programs, that would check a site and would highlight areas
(HTML, JS, CSS), that are problematic from cross-browser compatibility
perspective? Such a program can even suggest to web-designer, ways to
replace or spice the problematic spot with more compatible code
(indispensable for web designers).

Well, Knoppix is a very good test but there's only that much you can check
in a 10min Linux session

Right, knoppix will transparently fall back to VESA if it sees unsupported
video card (ATI, NVidia).

Knoppix would also not show you compatibility of special hardware (RAIDs,
thumb readers, SD/MMC readers, USB and Firewire adapters, WiFi). But then,
if you buy such devices, you must do your homework first.

It's wise to check before hardware purchase using one of the following Linux

Compatibility lists

You are falling back to the same trap, that made Linux so hard to penetrate
Desktop market.
Even me will not start browsing the sites in search of optimal

Too many peoples, that got in the trap, by keeping it complex, helped to
prosper such companies as EmperorLinux.com, that are not afraid to charge x2

Hello,Sometime ago I bought Linux based PDA - Zaurus SL-5500. I have installed OpenZaurus 3.5.4 on it and using it for various tasks:* books reader (with cyrillic)* mp3 and ogg player* dictionary (english-russian)
* some blessings holder (I read them through opera on locally installed apache+php).* addressbookI am still not sure whether I can use it as GPS navigator in Israel: several programs exists, but AFAIK none provides nor maps for Israel, nor ability to import them from some other program.
Do you know of any way to use the PDA as GPS navigator? The OpenZaurus has package opie-multikey, that provides keymaps for on-screen keyboard to type international symbols and send unicode codes to applications. Unfortunately, the opie-multikey program lacks hebrew keymap file. I have no idea of the keymap file format, and thus attached russian and arabic keymaps file in hope for someone to recognize the format.
Is there somewhere an ready to use opie-multikey format for hebrew?Upon completion of previous task, the next task I would like to use the PDA for is Hebrew-English dictionary. The OpenZaurus has opie-odict and zbedic as dictionary engines, but no hebrew dictonaries.
Do you know of any public domain hebrew-english dictionaries?I have found several popular blessings on internet in unicode format of various quality. Most of them lack nikud, many are for Sfaradim and all of them are not interactive. I wrote ugly hack on php that consultes with hebcal [taken from debian ARM distribution] on RoshHodesh and inserts Yaale veYavo into Birkat haMazon, but that is.
