Libranet
I am attaching a Libranet newsletter I just received. It seems to be consistent with the previously reported rumour of SuSE (USA) in financial straits. NEXT LIBRANET VERSION STILL ON THE WAY Owing to a sharp downturn in CD sales we are now forced to concentrate on other projects to generate cash flow. We have by no means dropped Libranet, it's just that we have scaled down the number of people/hours available to it. So, we'll have a new release as soon as it's ready and we are doing our best to make it an even better system than before. Thanks for being patient. - LINUX DESKTOP IN A SLUMP? We hear that the Linux world is in the doldrums, or maybe in a holding pattern. We notice less of those that are new to Linux purchasing Libranet. The bulk of the purchases seem to come from existing Linux users switching to Libranet. The release of the 2.4 kernel, KDE 2 and XFree86 4 was expected to help bring about a substantial exodus from Microsoft, but this has yet to happen. We think the number of GNU/Linux users will continue to increase, although slowly. We hope that the world will realize that there is a better alternative to Microsoft. -- Leon A. Variations on this theme have come up many times before, so i'll give you the short version. Yamaha Plextor make very good quality CD burners. All others are of questionable quality, and will either: 1) not work at all under Linux 2) work very poorly, generating alot of coasters 3) fail early in their lifespans Right now i see a US$76 Yamaha CRW8824E 8x8x24 INTERNAL IDE CD-RW 8824E at pricewatch. yes, and it has to be priced right to become an essential item. LiteOn is a well-received item here in Shamshiopo, Hongkong. It's cheap and works fine. All others are of questionable quality, and will either: 1) not work at all under Linux 2) work very poorly, generating alot of coasters 3) fail early in their lifespans The LiteOn model shows up as working under linux (in the linux-mandrake hardware database as working). The cd-record homepage also suggests that all cd-writers produced in 1999 or earlier are supported. Its just the burn-proof that I'm worried about. Right now i see a US$76 Yamaha CRW8824E 8x8x24 INTERNAL IDE CD-RW 8824E at pricewatch. Even with the Canadian exchange rate, its still cheaper than the one below. LiteOn is a well-received item here in Shamshiopo, Hongkong. It's cheap and works fine. I planned on taking a 24w model this Xmas to replace my 2-year-old Panasonic 4w CDR. But it's definitely not the best (which means expansive brands likeYamaha and Plextor). Seems to be a slight difference of opinion here. BTW I found the following note regarding Lite-On drives (following links from the cdrecord homepage) at http://www.cdrfaq.org/faq05.html#S5-1-43: Some of the drives appear to be based on Plextor units. The reviews I've found of the drive have seemed generally positive, although there may be some issues in the quality of any DAE done... but then again the purpose of this drive would mainly be to write not read I've got a cd-rom to do the other fun stuff. Joel Normally it boots fine from the scsi drive on the 2.4.0 kernel. I've been studying the SCSI HOW-TO and I have to make sure that all of the necessary SCSI kernel parts get added. The 2.4.0 kernel starts (Caldera) with loadable SCSI modules as part of an initrd=blahblah.tar line in lilo.conf that I did not understand at first. So I'll either have to do this or hopefully have enough space to put the SCSI stuff specific to my box in the kernel. But I will read about the bios stuff; I saw it mentioned in the HOW-TO. -- Tony Alfrey [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'd rather be sailing ___ http://linux.nf -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Archives, Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest, Etc -http://linux.nf/mailman/listinfo/linux-users

Its prolly easier to just compile the support into the kernel. Performance will be better. I'm going to try that first (I think). The SCSI HOW-TO says I need to be selective and not include every conceivable low-level driver or the kernel exceeds the capacity of the boot loader. I don't believe it, my 2.4.4 kernel boots and KDE appears. I was missing one low-level scsi driver in the build.
