enscript, ps2pdf

Use enscript (or nenscript, depending on distribution) to
create PostScript output of your text file. Then, use
ps2pdf to turn the PostScript into PDF. I have *no* idea
why you'd want to do this, though. Ain't none o' my bizness,
either.

Re: Help with PDF files

2001-07-18 Thread Stuart Biggerstaff

Just wondering...

If your documents actually are .TXTs--i.e. with no inherent formatting--why
do you need to convert them to .PDF? They should be usable as they are on
essentially any platform, including browsers. I recently had to buy a
couple of copies of Acrobat because patrons "didn't want to deal with"
multipage .TIFs. They wanted to use Acrobat Reader (which they had to
download), even though if they had Windows there is an accessory that will
read and print them. And even if they had Macs all they had to do was get
the latest free QuickTime.

Comng out of left field here, While there is no 'standard' langauge for
word-processed documents, many people use and prefer rtf (rich text) as the
transport medium. I am assuming you want pdf files so that your 'customers'
can download whatever-it-is, and conveniently use acrobat reader to read
them. Adobe give away the reader, and charge for the creation tool, eg to
make pdf files in the first place.

If it were me, I would opt for rich text as the base reference (eg save as
rich text). Look on google for a rich text to pdf converter.

A big thanks to everyone that gave advice. I figured out how it is done. I created my
document
in kword and printed to a file (no idea why that didn't dawn on mybrain dead). I
then used
ps2pdf to create the pdf fileand it displays correctly. Thanks again, you saved me
from
having to use that windows stuff!!

That is what I do. From any Linux word processor I print to a file, which
yields a ps file. Then I use ps2pdf. It usually results in what I expect.
I always get good results using klyx, followed by ps2pdf.

xv has never been able to read layered TIFFs. StarOffice, oddly, can
read them though.

I would really like to learn to use the convert program that comes with
caldera 2.4. I just can't seem to figure it out from the man page. For
example, I can't figure out how to make a number of tiff files into one big
tiff file. I follow the directions but no joy. If I try to combine two
files, the resulting file is twice
as big as the original, but neither xv nor gimp can read the second image in
the file. So, I am in bad need of some image reading.
Is there a home page or a tutorial for convert someone could point me to?

Ok, back to ground zero.

We now have agreed that text files have no formatting.

If I wanted to create nice looking pdf files in the manner you describe, I
would first try to get my 'document' into some well known format, like a .doc
file or even .rtf. Something that StarOffice could do very easily.

Then if I wanted to use Linux, I would try the PS to PDF program, but I've
never used it. I would have StarOffice print to a file, which would (or
should) create a postscript file of my document. Then (maybe) the PS2PDF
program would convert it

Ok, I didn't explain the situation very well. I apologize. To start with, this has
been my
first attempt at creating PDF files. I may be missing something very obvious here. I
wish to
create some documents in PDF format but also want it to be able to center text,
different font
sizes, possibly some bold as well. I tried kword and saved to .txt format which won't
work. I
also tried saving in kwd format but that didn't work either (obviously). Everything I
seem to
find talks about converting txt files but if txt files do not have formatting, what
should I be
trying to do? I have never tried this on windows either...I am totally new to creating
PDF
files.
Money is not an issue. If I can find something to do this then paying for it is no
problem. I
can see how this could be very useful. I tend to purchase all software if it serves my
purposes.

What original formatting? Its a *TEXT* file, there is no formatting or
it wouldnt' be text.

use it as much as you want for 30 days. If after that time you like

Well, a basic thought here... Since a normal text file doesn't really
*have* any fonts associated with it... how can you expect the output file to
maintain the original fonts?? There aren't any in the original file.

Help with PDF files

2001-07-16 Thread Vern W Heesch

I have been playing with converting text files to ps format using a2ps,
then to pdf format using ps2pdf. For the most part it seems to work.
However, I cannot figure out how to maintain the format or font sizes of
the original document. I have read about everything I could get my hands
on but still cannot figure it out. I have been using kword and saving as
a txt file and proceeding from there. I have been using the following
commands:

a2ps --borders=0 --output=
ps2pdf

If anyone has been doing this, or has any clue what I am doing wrong,
please let me know. This is driving me crazy!

Thanks much,
