[Lubuntu-admins] Fwd: First set of Bionic (sort-of) RC images.

2018-04-21 Thread Simon Quigley
Please help test!

 Forwarded Message
Subject: First set of Bionic (sort-of) RC images.
Date: Sat, 21 Apr 2018 23:22:56 +
From: Adam Conrad
To: ubuntu-rele...@lists.ubuntu.com

Over the next couple of hours, builds for Bionic Final should be added
to the tracker[1] for all flavours. The builds have some intentional
omissions, but please do test them anyway.

Known issues that will be addressed Sunday/Monday:
 - Volume label still set to Beta
 - base-files still not the final version
 - kernel will have (at least) one more revision

Despite the above, please, please, please test your images. Do not
wait for a "final" build to test, as that guarantees your final build
will be broken. We need you testing now, iterating uploads to get
your bugs fixed, filing bugs and escalating where you need help.

Again: DO NOT DELAY, TEST NOW, FIX BUGS, FILE BUGS, ESCALATE FOR HELP.

Happy testing everyone, and here's hoping we push out another smooth
and stress-free release on Thursday.

... Adam Conrad

[Lubuntu-admins] [Bug 1752733] Re: xiterm+thai is installed and set to x-terminal-emulator

2018-03-02 Thread Simon Quigley
** Changed in: lubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)

** Changed in: lubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => High

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Lubuntu

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1752733

Title:
xiterm+thai is installed and set to x-terminal-emulator

Status in lubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  STEPS TO REPRODUCE
  ==
   1. Install a daily version of Lubuntu Desktop Bionic or boot to the live
system
   2. Check for where /etc/alternatives/x-terminal-emulator is symlinked

  EXPECTED RESULTS

  /usr/bin/lxterminal

  ACTUAL RESULTS
  ==
  /usr/bin/txiterm

  AFFECTED VERSIONS
  =
   * Desktop only; not Alternate
   * Bionic only; Artful is not affected
   * both amd64 and i386

  NOTES
  =
   * lxterminal and xiterm+thai are both installed
   * postinst scripts on both packages set the update-alternatives priority to
20 (this cycle lxterminal was lowered to this value)
   * lxterminal is installed after xiterm+thai and thus does not become the new
x-terminal-emulator because of the priority being no greater
   * xiterm+thai is not explicitly required by our seeds
   * there is no package that xiterm+thai depends on (apt-rdepends -r), so
there should be no indirect depend on it
   * germinate-output, cd-build-logs don't show xiterm+thai being installed
   * cd-build-image logs do show xiterm+thai being installed as a depend of
apport-gtk
   * apport-gtk requires x-terminal-emulator, not a specific one
   * if a package satisfying a virtual package is not already installed, the
selection is essentially random

  POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS
  ==
   * explicity unseed xiterm+thai, which I think is more of a band-aid
   * ensure that lxterminal is installed before apport-gtk, which will ideally
require running germinate locally

  to reproduce
  1) Alt-tab to audacious.
  2) j to "Jump to song"
  3) alt-ctrl-left to change workspace before jump to song shows up. this is
easy if your playlist is big, since it takes about a minute for jump to song
window to show up.
  4) jump to song window shows up
  expected result:
jump to song window should be in the list of windows open in the xfce4
"window buttons" panel
  actual result:
jump to song window is in the 'window buttons' panel in the workspace that
audacious is in but NOT in the workspace that the 'jump to song' window is
actually in.

so for example if you have a few dozen windows open in your current
workspace, and alt-tab away from the 'jump to window' you have to
minimize all of your other windows to see it since you can't easily
'alt tab' back to it (and it's not obvious which workspace you would
have to go to find it)

What sometimes happens is that it *does* show up in the list, but alt
tabbing between it and the other windows that are open on that
workspace makes it disappear from that list within a couple of alt-
  tabs.

  "
(Note, that to avoid quoting issues, I created a link to the actual "Program
Files", naming it "ProgramFiles")
Google-ing this issue suggested a 64-bit vs 32-bit issue, so I pulled up
Synaptic and looked at the installed packages.

There seemed to be both 32-bit and 64-bit assorted wine files/libs .

But I noticed a wierd thing: when I tried to look at the "Installed Files"
for wine32:i386,
I got the message: "The list of installed files is only available for
installed packages",
although the package was checkmarked as installed, and under Common->Status
Installed was checkmarked.
This was not the case for the other wine packages.
I re-installed the package, but got the same thing.

I tried to see what was in the install .deb with GDebi, but it errored
with: "Error: no longer provides wine32"

I don't know if it is THE problem, but it looks rather like A problem,
  anyway...

  Error enabling Xpad autostart

Status in xpad package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

  2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname'
or by checking in Software Center

  3) What you expected to happen
No error message. "Start Xpad automatically..." option checked. Autostart in
next session login.

  4) What happened instead
Error message. "Start Xpad automatically..." option unchecked. No autostart
in next session login.

In Xpad Preferences -> Startup tab:
Checking the "Start Xpad automatically after login" option brings up the
following error message:
  "Error enabling Xpad autostart
  Could not copy /usr/share/applications/xpad.desktop to
/home/$USER/.config/autostart/xpad.desktop
Error opening file '/home/$USER/.config/autostart/xpad.desktop': No such file
or directory"

Upon inspection in my system there's no /home/$USER/.config/autostart
directory, and since it's a fairly recent OS install I'm assuming it's
  not created during install.

Both "mkdir /home/$USER/.config/autostart" and "ln -s
  /home/$USER/.config/upstart /home/$USER/.config/autostart" solve the
issue, so I guess Ubuntu or xpad package need to be patched.

  Cheers,
  Eneko

lm-sensors despite me having libsensors and lm-sensors installed. I'v
also sudo sensors-detect to ensure my sensors were properly found and
  setup.

I expect the sensors tab to be populated with the temperatures of the

This did not happen, the sensors area is blank.

Opening that JPG in Image Viewer brings up the error message "Error

Have attached the JPG in question to this bug report - the contents of
this photo are also relevant to Bug 1747341.

[Lubuntu-admins] [Bug 1645564] Re: Lubuntu slideshow links to old website.

The slideshow shows the intended image on upgrade to 113.1, on the
latest Lubuntu Xenial Daily ISO.

This is what was intended, so I'm marking this as passed.

Bug description:
  [Impact/Test Case]
The Lubuntu slideshow should have a screenshot with the Lubuntu.me website
(as this is what gets up-to-date information). Right now it has a Lubuntu.net
screenshot, which is inaccurate and does not represent the project well.

  [Regression Potential]
None, this is simply replacing an image in the slideshow. Unless the
underlying tooling changes, this shouldn't break.

  [Additional Note]
Lubuntu considers this a blocker to releasing 16.04.4.

  [Original Description]
To reproduce on Lubuntu install Lubuntu and on the last slide where it says
to visit our website at lubuntu.net it should be lubuntu.me as that recieves
updated information.

LXQt doesn't read the correct settings for multiple XDG_CONFIG_DIRS

Status in Lubuntu Next:

Bug description:
  See upstream bug : https://github.com/lxde/lxde-qt/issues/349

lxqt always read the settings from /etc/xdg/lxqt, even if others
  directories are set on XDG_CONFIG_DIRS

For example, on Lubuntu, we have :
  XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/lubuntu:/etc/xdg/xdg-QLubuntu:/etc/xdg
  Custom settings on /etc/xdg/lubuntu/lxqt
  lxqt default settings on /etc/xdg/lxqt

On a fresh start, the settings on /etc/xdg/lxqt are set, instead of
  /etc/xdg/lubuntu/lxqt

One weird note, pcmanfm-qt works, but we have :
  XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/lubuntu:/etc/xdg/xdg-QLubuntu:/etc/xdg
  Custom settings on /etc/xdg/lubuntu/pcmanfm-qt
  No default settings on /etc/xdg/pcmanfm-qt

Maybe it's the last directory (with a content) on XDG_CONFIG_DIRS
which is set, instead of the first one ?

  See upstream bug : https://github.com/lxde/lxde-qt/issues/349

lxqt always read the settings from /etc/xdg/lxqt, even if others
  directories are set on XDG_CONFIG_DIRS

For example, on Lubuntu, we have :
  XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/lubuntu:/etc/xdg/xdg-QLubuntu:/etc/xdg
  Custom settings on /etc/xdg/lubuntu/lxqt
  lxqt default settings on /etc/xdg/lxqt

On a fresh start, the settings on /etc/xdg/lxqt are set, instead of
  /etc/xdg/lubuntu/lxqt

One weird note, pcmanfm-qt works, but we have :
  XDG_CONFIG_DIRS=/etc/xdg/lubuntu:/etc/xdg/xdg-QLubuntu:/etc/xdg
  Custom settings on /etc/xdg/lubuntu/pcmanfm-qt
  No default settings on /etc/xdg/pcmanfm-qt

Maybe it's the last directory (with a content) on XDG_CONFIG_DIRS
which is set, instead of the first one ?

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu 17.04 has reached End of Life

2018-01-15 Thread Simon Quigley
The Lubuntu Team announces that as a non-LTS release, 17.04 has a
9-month support cycle and, as such, reached end of life on Saturday,
January 13, 2018. Lubuntu will no longer provide bug fixes or security
updates for 17.04, and we strongly recommend that you update to 17.10,
which continues to be actively supported with security updates and
select high-impact bug fixes.

For more important information about this End of Life notice, take a
look at the announcement on the official Lubuntu website:

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu 17.10.1 (Artful Aardvark) released!

2018-01-11 Thread Simon Quigley
Lubuntu 17.10.1 has been released to fix a major problem affecting many
Lenovo laptops that causes the computer to have BIOS problems after
installing. You can find more details about this problem here[1].

*Please note that the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities have not been
fixed in this ISO, so we advise that if you install this ISO, update
directly after.*

This release is no different in terms of features from the 17.10
release, and is comparable to an LTS point release in that all updates
since the 17.10 release have been rolled into this ISO. You can find the
initial announcement here[2].

You can download 17.10.1 ISOs here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/17.10.1/release/

Many thanks to Lubuntu's testers (especially the ones from Google
Code-In, that was a great help!) and Steve Langasek from the Ubuntu
Release Team for making this happen!

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu Seeds are now in Git

2017-12-27 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everyone!

Lubuntu's Development Team has decided to convert Lubuntu's seeds to Git
from Bazaar. So where you would see independent branches like this:
https://code.launchpad.net/~lubuntu-dev/ubuntu-seeds/lubuntu.bionic
You will now see different Git branches in one central Git repository:
https://git.launchpad.net/~lubuntu-dev/ubuntu-seeds/+git/lubuntu
If you prefer viewing things in Phabricator, we have mirrored it there
too: http://phab.lubuntu.me/source/lubuntu-seed/

This change has been made on the metapackage side in 0.87 and on, and
any future lubuntu-meta SRUs should probably consider doing this
conversion as well.

We're the first flavor to do this, so hiccups shouldn't be out of the
question, but overall this should be a fairly low-impact change.

Happy holidays!

2017-12-26 Thread Simon Quigley
mmunity for a while now. (I wouldn't
normally bring this up as a counterpoint, but it seems to me that you
expect to be able to hop right back in as a Team Lead or a Release

Again, we are in the process of working on this. Had you been in the
open, collaborative Lubuntu community recently, you would know that we
have been discussing this.

I agree, could you help us get Lubuntu.net/org entirely off of the
Ubuntu Wiki and the Ubuntu Community Help wiki?

What you seem to fail to understand is that we have been attempting to
get your closed site, Lubuntu.net/org, into official, open, Lubuntu Team
hands for more than a year now. But once 17.10 was out of the way, and
after several discussions with the Ubuntu Community Council, both public
and private, we decided to take legal action as a last resort. For the
sake of transparency (and since this does not include replies from
Legal), this was our email:

After this email was sent, we received a follow-up saying that they
would make some enquiries. After this happened, you:
 1. Stole the artwork and screenshots of Rafael Laguna, who, rightfully,
has explicit written permission to use the Lubuntu trademark, and is the
origin of these images and screenshots.
 2. Created several social media accounts and resources which the
Lubuntu Team has no control over promoting your new site which you stole
the artwork and screenshots from.

with the official Lubuntu Project in any way, shape, or form) created a

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu 17.10 (Artful Aardvark) released!

2017-10-19 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 17.10 has
been released! With the codename Artful Aardvark, Lubuntu 17.10 is the
13th release of Lubuntu, with support until July of 2018.

  What is Lubuntu?

*Lubuntu* is an official *Ubuntu* flavor based on the Lightweight X11
Desktop Environment (LXDE). The project’s goal is to provide a
lightweight yet functional distribution. *Lubuntu* specifically targets
older machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer
hardware. Along with a simple but usable graphical user interface,
*Lubuntu* comes with a wide variety of applications chosen for their
small footprint so you can browse, email, chat, play, and be productive.

  Where can I download it?

On the *Ubuntu* cdimage server
, we have
images for the following architectures:

  * amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
  * i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)

The release notes are here
 if you
wish to read them. We have left out some notes that are common to all
flavors, so read the *Ubuntu* release notes
 if you wish.

  What’s improved since 17.04?

  * We now ship with Linux Kernel 4.13.
  * General bug fix release as we prepare to switch to LXQt.
  * LXDE components have been updated with bug fixes.
  * The artwork has received an update.
  * The latest release of Audacious, 3.9, is included by default.
  * Hardinfo has been updated to the latest upstream snapshot.

  System Requirements

*Lubuntu* is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for
all of them. Some computers have too little horsepower or memory. A rule
of thumb is that the computer should not be more than 10 years old
(although some older computers are known to work as well).

  * *Memory (RAM)*: for advanced internet services like Google+,
YouTube, Google Drive, and Facebook, your computer needs at least 1
GB of RAM. For local programs like LibreOffice and simple browsing
habits, your computer needs at least 512 MB of RAM.
  * *Processor (CPU)*: the minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or
Pentium M or AMD K8. Older processors are too slow and the AMD K7
has problems with Flash video.

  How do I get support?

We recommend that you email the lubuntu-users mailing list. Send an
email to lubuntu-users AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

If you prefer IRC, our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC
. If you don’t
have an IRC client, click the link in the earlier sentence, type in a
nickname, press start, state your question and press Enter to speak. *If
your question is not answered right away, stick around, and if you don’t
get an answer, email the lubuntu-users list.*

  How do I contribute?

We always need more help! If you would like to contribute, head over to
our Getting Involved page
. If you have any
questions about contributing, please join #lubuntu-devel on freenode or
email the lubuntu-devel mailing list at lubuntu-devel AT lists DOT
ubuntu DOT com.

  Known Issues

For known issues, please see the release notes
.

  Lubuntu Next

Alongside *Lubuntu* 17.10 featuring LXDE, the *Lubuntu* Team is proud to
announce an early adopter’s release of *Lubuntu* Next, featuring the
LXQt 0.11.1 Desktop Environment, which is the Qt 5 port of LXDE. *While
this release is available to install using the links below, we do NOT
recommend that people use it in production unless they are aware of the
somewhat critical bugs associated (which are more than 10 at the point
of writing this). It also wouldn’t be a bad idea to be in contact with
us as well*. A rule of thumb is that if you do not know what we are
talking about, don’t install it quite yet.

You can install *Lubuntu* Next by using the links available on the
cdimage server
 or by using
the Minimal ISO for 17.10 and selecting the Lubuntu Qt desktop
.

  Connect With Us

If you would like to connect with us on various platforms, we have
several ways to stay in touch .

Have you tried clicking on the applet? It doesn't ask for the WiFi
password because we don't have that notification system configured.

Did you *just* try a left click or a right click too?

That's expected, default settings aren't properly set. It's in the
release notes...

It is, it just doesn't show as the Qt version in the panel.

[Lubuntu-admins] Call for testing: Artful Aardvark Final Beta

2017-09-26 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everybody, it's that time again! The Lubuntu team needs your help
testing Lubuntu Artful Aardvark Beta 2 (the final beta) so we can
release tomorrow.

We need the tests completed that are on the ISO QA Tracker[1] to ensure
that everything works properly. If all the Lubuntu tests are done,
please feel free to help out our friends over at the other flavors. They
would appreciate help as well. :)

Within the next day I will be working on the release notes[2]. Check
back tomorrow if you want to proofread/confirm the notes. If you found
any new bugs, please link to them on the release notes.

I'll also be working on preparing the release notes and announcement for
Lubuntu Next, as I plan on releasing that as well.

If you found any other way to help that hasn't been listed above,
respond to this email, send me an email, or join #lubuntu-devel on
freenode[3] and ask there.

Thanks again everyone!

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu Artful Aardvark Beta 1 has been released!

2017-08-31 Thread Simon Quigley
Lubuntu Artful Aardvark Beta 1 (soon to be 17.10) has been released!
Also in this release (in addition to the usual LXDE ISO) is an
experimental image with LXQt instead of LXDE.

For the LXDE edition, we have a couple papercuts listed in the release
notes[1], so please take a look there. Please note that this Beta
release features usage of netplan instead of ifupdown, so networking
issues might occur. If you find such issues, please let us know by
reporting a bug against plan (the source that ships netplan)[2].

You can grab the Lubuntu images from here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/artful/beta-1/

We recommend that if you install Lubuntu Artful Aardvark Beta 1, that
you download the LXDE edition rather than the experimental LXQt ISO. The
LXQt ISO will most likely break your system.

If you would like to read the release notes for Lubuntu Next (the
experimental LXQt edition of Lubuntu), you can find them here[3]. The
release notes lists all of the known issues for the images.

You can grab the experimental Lubuntu Next images from here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu-next/releases/artful/beta-1/

A big thanks to the whole Lubuntu team and contributors for helping pull
this release together! If you would like to join our team and help make
Lubuntu 17.10 the best release ever, feel free to get involved[4]! Any
contribution of your time, no matter how small or trivial, helps us out.

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu 16.04.3 LTS has been released!

2017-08-03 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, we are pleased to
announce that Lubuntu 16.04.3 LTS has been released!

WHAT IS LUBUNTU?

Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor based on the Lightweight X11
Desktop Environment (LXDE). The project’s goal is to provide a
lightweight yet functional distribution. Lubuntu specifically targets
older machines with lower resources, but also runs great on newer
hardware. Along with a simple but usuable graphical user interface,
Lubuntu comes with a wide variety of applications chosen for their small
footprint so you can browse, email, chat, play, and be productive.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LUBUNTU 16.04.2 LTS?

Lubuntu 16.04.3 is a set of images produced for convenience so that a
fresh install of the latest Lubuntu LTS does not require as many updates
after install (as Lubuntu continues to release Stable Release Updates
and security fixes to make your experience as smooth as possible and to
fix any bugs, if you want to help us out with this, see below, we always
need more help), but is not a new major release of Lubuntu in and of
itself. If you do system updates regularly, you are already running
Lubuntu 16.04.3 LTS, and if you install Lubuntu on a system using a
Lubuntu 16.04.2 LTS image or a previous point release and do system
updates, that system will then be running Lubuntu 16.04.3 LTS.

WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT?

On the Ubuntu cdimage server[1], we have images for the following
architectures:

- amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
- i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)

The release notes[2] are here if you wish to read them. We have left out
some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu release
notes[3] if you wish.

This release does NOT include PowerPC, although users of the PowerPC
platform can still receive updates. This is due to the fact that PowerPC
users would be left with an unsupported kernel because PowerPC is no
longer supported in the non-LTS releases.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Lubuntu is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for
all of them. Some computers have too little horsepower or memory. A rule
of thumb is that the computer should not be more than 10 years old.

*Memory (RAM)*

For advanced internet services like Google+, YouTube, Google Drive, and
Facebook, your computer needs at least 1 GB of RAM.

For local programs like LibreOffice and simple browsing habits, your
computer needs at least 512 MB of RAM.

*Processor (CPU)*

The minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or Pentium M or AMD K8.
Older processors are too slow and the AMD K7 has problems with Flash video.

KNOWN BUGS

To see the list of known bugs, please take a look at our release notes[2].

HOW DO I GET SUPPORT?

Our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC. If you don't have an
IRC client, click the link below[4], type in a nickname, press start,
state your question and press Enter to speak. Please be patient as we
have a limited amount of people in this channel, and people are not
always online. We also have the lubuntu-users mailing list if you do not
get a response on IRC. You do not need to subscribe to the mailing list
to ask a question, you can just send an email to lubuntu-users AT lists
DOT ubuntu DOT com.

HOW DO I CONTRIBUTE MY TIME?

We always need more help! If you would like to contribute your time to
helping Lubuntu, head over to our Getting Involved page[5]. We need help
with Reporting bugs, Translations, Tests/QA, Code and patches, Artwork,
Documentation, and Marketing/Press. If you have any questions about
contributing, please join #lubuntu-devel on freenode or email the
lubuntu-devel mailing list[6] at lubuntu-devel AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu Next Default Applications

2017-07-05 Thread Simon Quigley
between a couple of choices, we need to decide on
 the best one.
 * PDF application: https://is.gd/Us5JUF
   - qpdfview is the only choice on the blueprint, and it seems like a
decent one, but it has not been updated in Debian for a while. I
have not received a response from the maintainer yet to see if it
 will be updated.
   - We could either work with Debian's processes to see if an upstream
version could be uploaded there, or just upload a new version to
Ubuntu. Or, we can decide on another application. I'm leaving this
one up to Julien to decide.
 * Archive application: https://is.gd/MRmi9i
   - We should see if there are any other possible solutions besides
the ones on the blueprint. Suggestions welcome.
 * Instant messaging/communication: https://is.gd/6iq1Kc
   - There are several individual clients for different things such as
IRC and VoIP, but there's not a Pidgin replacement on the
 blueprint. Suggestions welcome.
 * Image viewer: https://is.gd/IKx3U1
   - LXImage-Qt seems like a good option, it's supported upstream, but
Nomacs is on the image now. I'd like some feedback from Julien and
the rest of the team as to which one we should include.
 * Locking application: https://is.gd/Nzfnup
   - xscreensaver seems like a good option, but is there anything else
 we should consider?
   - Can we theme xscreensaver to look a bit better?
 * Office suite: https://is.gd/EGJD5M
   - LibreOffice is extremely popular and is what is currently used on
 the image.
   - Leaving it open for any final feedback, otherwise we'll go with
 that.
 * Printer management: https://is.gd/tOtPFp
   - There are no options here and I don't know what to pick.
 * Scan application: https://is.gd/AbuRo8
   - There are no options here and I don't know what to pick.
 * Text editor: https://is.gd/lKv3BB
   - Is there any progress on porting Juffed to Qt 5? I really don't
think we should have anything Qt 4-based on the ISO.
 * Torrent application: https://is.gd/dxuj3y
   - Transmission or qbittorrent?
 * Email client: https://is.gd/VEsAoy
   - It looks like Trojitá needs to be packaged, although that's pretty
easy to do. Is everyone OK with it?
 * Other applications: https://is.gd/ROBRJT
   - Calculator? Any other utilities that we should include by default?
 * Notes application: https://is.gd/OJQgSQ
   - Are there any non-KDE Qt 5 notes applications that we can use? I'm
not seeing any on the blueprint.
 * CD/DVD burning/USB writing application: https://is.gd/GGTXlf
   - I'm currently working with the new mkusb upstream to get that
 packaged, maybe that's an option?
   - This is something we still need, correct?
 * Games: https://is.gd/KDGkeI
   - 2048 is a fun game, I'd support keeping that.
   - Are there any other fun games that we could include? Do we even
 want to include 2048?
 * Task manager: https://is.gd/IT5HwT
   - qps seems like a decent task manager, although I'd like to make
 sure there's no better alternative.
   - I personally really like htop, although that doesn't have a GUI.

A goal of mine is to see a lot of these decided on by Alpha 2 (July
27th), and all of them decided on by Beta 1 (August 31st) so we can work
on documentation and polishing. I think these are achievable goals,
given that we can change any of these applications in the future if we
need to.

Any thoughts on this that is *not* bikeshedding? :)

[Lubuntu-admins] [ANNOUNCEMENT] Lubuntu 17.04 has been released!

2017-04-13 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 17.04 has
been released! With the codename Zesty Zapus, Lubuntu 17.04 is the 12th
release of Lubuntu, with support until of January 2018.

WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT?

On the Ubuntu cdimage server[1], we have images for the following
architectures:
 - amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
 - i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)

The release notes are here if you wish to read them[2]. We have left out
some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu release
notes[3] if you wish.

WHAT'S IMPROVED SINCE 16.10?

 - We now ship with Linux Kernel 4.10.
 - General bug fix release as we prepare to switch to LXQt.
 - LXDE components have been updated with bug fixes.
 - The artwork has received an update.

*Processor (CPU)*

The minimum specification for CPU is Pentium 4 or Pentium M or AMD K8.
Older processors are too slow and the AMD K7 has problems with Flash video.

HOW DO I GET SUPPORT?

We recommend that you email the lubuntu-users mailing list. Send an
email to lubuntu-users AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

If you prefer IRC, our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC[4].
If you don’t have an IRC client, click the link in the earlier sentence,
type in a nickname, press start, state your question and press Enter to
speak.

HOW DO I CONTRIBUTE?

our Getting Involved page[5]. If you have any questions about
contributing, please join #lubuntu-devel on freenode or email the
lubuntu-devel mailing list at lubuntu-devel AT lists DOT ubuntu DOT com.

KNOWN ISSUES

For known issues, please see the release notes[2].

LXQt

Unfortunately, we could not get LXQt ready in time for 17.04, so Lubuntu
17.04 ships with LXDE.

[Lubuntu-admins] Next Lubuntu Team Meeting

2017-04-12 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everyone!

It's been a long time since we've held a meeting for the Lubuntu team,
and I think we're due for another one. We have so much to talk about,
from LXQt, the release of 17.04, etc. so this meeting might last more
than an hour.

I've created a Doodle poll[1] that I would like feedback from the people
I directly sent this email to, at the minimum. I would appreciate it if
you could submit your times as soon as possible, because the sooner that
happens, the sooner we can get an agenda planned. I'll follow up on this
email once that has happened.

Thanks for your time!

[Lubuntu-admins] Call for testing: Lubuntu 17.04 FINAL images

2017-04-10 Thread Simon Quigley
We're nearing April 13th, the release date for Lubuntu 17.04. We need your help
in testing Lubuntu 17.04 so we can release on Thursday.

The Lubuntu team needs help testing to make sure that the ISO boots and installs
the system correctly, and can reboot into a Lubuntu desktop without any critical
errors.

We strongly recommend that you use real hardware, not virtual machines. While
virtual machines are useful, complete testing includes watching out for edge
cases.

To install Lubuntu, grab an image, write it to a USB drive (or burn it to a DVD)
and follow the instructions listed on the ISO QA tracker[1]. When you begin
testing, mark the test case as "In Progress" and after following the
instructions, make sure to edit your result and indicate if it was successful or
if you ran into any problems.

If you see that the images are already tested, don't let that discourage you. We
would like to see more than one successful result for each test case, so feel
free to test it again. Also, don't be afraid to help out any other flavors that
are missing submissions -- the process for doing this is pretty universal.

If you find any new bugs that haven't been reported on the release notes for
Final Beta, please file a bug report and add it to the release notes.

Please watch out and heavily test the following two things:

 - We have a new LXPanel, please make sure it works properly.
 - Ubuntu has switched the underlying DNS resolver to systemd-resolved, so
please test that DNS works properly on all of your systems.

Lastly, I'll be working on the release notes[2] within the next couple of days.
Please don't be afraid to correct any problems you might find.

Happy testing!

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu 16.04.2 LTS has been released!

2017-02-16 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, we are pleased to
announce that Lubuntu 16.04.2 LTS has been released!

WHERE CAN I DOWNLOAD IT?

On the Ubuntu cdimage server[1], we have images for the following
architectures:

- amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit)
- i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit)

The release notes[2] are here if you wish to read them. We have left
out some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu
release notes[3] if you wish.

This release does NOT include PowerPC, although users of the PowerPC
platform can still receive updates. This is due to the fact that PowerPC
users would be left with an unsupported kernel after support is dropped
in the development release, Zesty Zapus.

KNOWN BUGS

To see the list of known bugs, please take a look at our release
notes[2].

HOW DO I GET SUPPORT?

Our support channel is #lubuntu on freenode IRC. If you don't have an IRC
client, click the link below[4], type in a nickname, press start, state
your question and press Enter to speak. We also have the lubuntu-users

[Lubuntu-admins] Ending Lubuntu Zesty Daily PowerPC Builds

2017-02-06 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everyone,

I noticed we still had PowerPC Daily Builds enabled, and after the
Technical Board decided[1] to remove the 32-bit powerpc architecture
in future releases, Lubuntu will no longer be able to have a PowerPC Zesty
release past Feature Freeze. I propose we remove the Lubuntu Zesty Daily
PowerPC Builds effective Monday, February 13, 2017, if that's alright with
everyone. This will ensure that we have adequate time to make sure the removal
is clean and leaves no outstanding issues on the 16th when the architecture
is removed.

LTS support for PowerPC systems will not go away, lasting until April of 2019,
so if you have a system that uses the PowerPC architecture on Lubuntu 16.04 LTS,
you can expect security updates from the Ubuntu archive until April of 2021, or
support from *us* until April of 2019[2] (only a *three* year support period as
opposed to five for the entire archive, if that makes sense).

Please let me know if you have any questions.

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu 17.04 Planning Meeting

2016-10-13 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello,

It would be advantageous to have a planning meeting for 17.04, so we
have a plan and are able to discuss anything related to the delivery of
17.04. An emphasis would be on LXQt, as we hopefully have everything
ready to start testing a Lubuntu LXQt image.

This would happen in place of our monthly meeting, which I am unable to
attend at it's current time.

Within the next half an hour, I'll be adding items to
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/IRC%20Meetings/Agenda , and I encourage
you all to do so as well.

I created a Doodle poll so we can pick the best time for everyone to
attend. Here it is: http://doodle.com/poll/phetuyv7ndkirdxf

Is anybody opposed to having a meeting like this, or can not make any of
the times listed?

[Lubuntu-admins] [ANNOUNCEMENT] Lubuntu 16.10 Released!

2016-10-13 Thread Simon Quigley
Thanks to all the hard work from our contributors, Lubuntu 16.10 has
been released! With the codename Yakkety Yak, Lubuntu 16.10 is the 11th
release of Lubuntu, with support until July 2017.

We even have Lenny the Lubuntu mascot[1] dressed up for the occasion!

WHAT IS LUBUNTU?

Lubuntu is an official Ubuntu flavor based on the Lightweight X11
Desktop Environment (LXDE). The project’s goal is to provide a
lightweight yet functional distribution. Lubuntu specifically targets

The release notes are here if you wish to read them[3]. We have left out
some notes that are common to all flavors, so read the Ubuntu release
notes[4] if you wish.

WHAT'S IMPROVED SINCE 16.04?

 - We now ship with Linux Kernel 4.8.
 - General bug fix release as we prepare to switch to LXQt.
 - LXDE components have been updated with bug fixes.
 - The artwork has received an update.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Lubuntu is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for
all of them. Some computers have too little horsepower or memory. A rule

KNOWN ISSUES

For known issues, please see the release notes[3].

LXQt

Unfortunately, we could not get LXQt ready in time for 16.10, so Lubuntu
16.10 ships with LXDE.

[Lubuntu-admins] What I didn't get a chance to talk about at the meeting

2016-09-15 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello everyone,

I had a few agenda items I wanted to discuss at the recent Lubuntu
meeting, but unfortunately I didn't do the math right on the time zones
and I ended up not being able to attend.

BUG DAY:

Walter wanted a report on Bug Day, but to make it short, nothing
happened. Nobody seemed to pop in on IRC, and I didn't see any bug
activity in particular.

LUBUNTU MANUAL:

Slow progress (been busy with a lot of different things). I would always
appreciate the help. Here's the GitHub repo which should have all the
details if you'd like to give us a hand:
https://github.com/lubuntu-team/lubuntu-manual

I don't think it applies to DocumentationStringFreeze (which was today)
because it's not a package. If it all goes as planned, there will be
time before release to translate, if desired.

LXQt/PLANS FOR 16.10 AND 17.04:

We won't get LXQt 0.11 in the archive for 16.10 because they didn't
release yet. Hopefully for 17.04 we'll be good to go. I've heard that
LXQt 0.11 provides a lot of improvements, so I'm looking forward to it. :)

(maybe I'll get it in a PPA somewhere and take it for a test drive, who
knows? ;) )

Lubuntu team, I would like to propose that we at the very minimum
provide an image with a fully featured Lubuntu with LXQt for 17.04 (if
not default). This would include LXQt 0.11 (or 0.12, depending on their
timing) and would have all the default settings set. Even if we can't do
it, it would be a nice goal to set, just to have something to work towards.

It seems we're just waiting on a patch to be merged into Qt[1] so we can
set an environment variable to make our default settings apply
correctly[2]. Then, depending on when it's merged and what version of Qt
ships with 17.04, we might have to get the patch cherry-picked[3]. I'm
CCing Palo Kisa who has been awesome in helping me figure out a few
little quirks along the way (for example, this pull request which will
really help us in the future: https://github.com/lxde/liblxqt/pull/104
), just in case he has anything to add. But, I honestly don't see this
happening right away as 16.10 is right around the corner (we can use
PPAs to test, though).

Something to consider would be doing what Kubuntu does. If an individual
running 16.10 would like to use LXQt from the Yakkety archive, we can
upload to a backports PPA. Thoughts on this, Julien?

Within the next day or two, I'll get a tarball and some instructions on
installing LXQt and manually applying the default settings I whipped up,
so people can get testing. I haven't had a good experience building
ISOs, but I'll try again in a few days as well.

For those people who are unaware, we currently have a blocker in our
LXQt transition. We would like to apply some default settings, but there
are currently some upstream blockers (Qt at the moment, there might be
another blocker in the future, who knows?) that we have to unblock to be
able to continue.

Lubuntu team (especially Julien), objections?

Lubuntu community, about the above, more opportunities to test things
will certainly come very soon (within the next few weeks). We look
forward to any feedback you might have. :)

I encourage feedback on anything I wrote about here.

Have a good night everyone!

[1] https://codereview.qt-project.org/#/c/169245/
[2] An environment variable has to be set so LXQt knows which settings
to use.
[3] Just that patch could be put in the Ubuntu Qt package, which allows
for things like this to be immediately worked with.

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Beta 1 Call for Testing

2016-08-23 Thread Simon Quigley
It's that time again! The Lubuntu team needs your help testing Lubuntu
Yakkety Beta so we can release without any problems on Thursday.

Later I'll work on the Beta 1 release notes[1]. Check back tomorrow if
you want to proofread/confirm the notes. If you found any
new bugs, please link to them on the release notes.

If you found any other way to help that hasn't been listed above,
respond to this email, send me an email, or join #lubuntu-devel on
freenode[2] and mention it there.

Lubuntu Yakkety Yak Beta 1 will be released on Thursday, so please get
your testing in as soon as possible!

NOTE: We don't need PowerPC testing as we don't release PowerPC for
non-LTS releases.

[Lubuntu-admins] Call for testing for alternate images (WAS: Architecture EOL plans for Lubuntu)

We really need to confirm what Bryan is saying. If he is correct and
Lubuntu Desktop really takes less resources than Lubuntu Alternate,
there is no use in keeping Alternate images.

We need someone on real hardware from each architecture (amd64, i386,
AND PowerPC) to test limits on their hardware. Here's what you have to
do to help.
 1. Grab the following images:
  a. Yakkety Daily Alternate
  b. Xenial Daily Alternate
  c. Yakkety Daily Live
  d. Xenial Daily Live
 2. Boot an image of your choice setting the mem=MB boot
parameter. Here's a guide on doing that:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/KernelBootParameters
 3. Select "Install Lubuntu"
 4. Install the operating system on your computer.
 5. Repeat steps 2-4 decreasing the amount of RAM until you get a
failure due to the lack of available RAM.
 6. Repeat steps 2-5 with all of the images.
 7. Respond reporting your results.

Also, now's the time to make your case for keeping alternate images. If
the results turn up that Desktop takes less resources, we will ask for
it to stop being produced unless we have a good reason to keep it.

Have a nice day, and get testing! :)

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu Next Images

2016-08-11 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello Release Team,

The Lubuntu team is ready to begin the migration process to LXQt, and one
of the first parts of the migration is getting an image to move to. We have
prepared the lubuntu-qt-desktop metapackage and we are ready for an image.

A few weeks ago, I submitted two merge proposals[1,2] thanks to advice
given by Adam Conrad on #ubuntu-release. On several occasions (on IRC),
both myself and Walter Lapchynski have asked for feedback on the merge
proposals in an effort to get the images spun up so we can take our next
step, but have not received any.

This is a call for feedback on those two merge proposals so we can get the
images spun up and take our next step.

Please let us know,
Simon Quigley for the Lubuntu team

[Lubuntu-admins] Lubuntu 14.04.5 LTS has been released!

2016-08-04 Thread Simon Quigley
The latest and last point release of the Lubuntu Trusty Tahr LTS,
14.04.5, is now available for download.

This release includes images for amd64 (commonly referred to as 64-bit),
i386 (commonly referred to as 32-bit), and PowerPC.

The release notes[1], which covers the latest update as well as the
whole history of the release, is linked below. There is also a link to
download the images from the Ubuntu cdimage server[2].

Just note that we have a bug affecting PowerPC that affects installing
Lubuntu alongside another operating system. More details are in the
release notes.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this release possible!

2016-05-10 Thread Simon Quigley
Hello Daniel/Community Council,

It was proposed to us to have a check-in with the Community Council on
July 7th, 2016. What time of day did you have in mind? This will allow
us to ensure everybody can attend.
