[Lubuntu-admins] heads up: 14.04.2 delayed until Thu 19 Feb

2015-02-06 Thread Walter Lapchynski
You may want to tell the world before they start freaking out :)
https://lists.launchpad.net/lubuntu-qa/msg04905.html

Note, this does apply to the whole Ubuntu family.

Note for us the big issue is in having missing/additional packages
than we should have.

Blueprint changed by Walter Lapchynski:

Whiteboard changed:
[wxl] It looks like 14.04.2 is facing some issues that will likely
result in Alternate not being released for this milestone. The issues
that affect Desktop affect everyone, so the Release Team must fix these.
If the same fix doesn't apply to Alternates, though, that creates a
problem. The Team will still attempt to fix it, but there's no
guarantees. At least with LTS images for folks using Alternate, the HWE
stack is probably not necessary, but it illustrates the problem.

- Two possible solutions were discussed with Adam Conrad (infinity)
- 1. netboot/mini.iso (which, of course, requires an Internet connection and
that may be asking a lot)
- 2. Changing `ubiquity` somehow to minimize resource usage. As an example,
making a text-only frontend, but making it part of the project, rather than
something separate. Perhaps we could get Server to help out here? Perhaps other
flavors would be interested?

+
+ [wxl] gilir (if I may speak for him after we had a private message) is

+
+ So for 14.04.2, we will likely not have any alternates. My concern is
+ that we'll continue to face this over and over again: wasted testing
+ time trying to fix something that only we care about.
+
+ On the other hand, mini.iso is not without it's issues:
+ 1. An internet connection is required. In the 3rd world, a decent internet
connection is a luxury, and yet that is likely where Lubuntu is most needed for
old machines.
+ 2. It's terribly unfriendly. Imagine the people that would need it the most.
They're the folks with an old XP machine that needs some love. They've never
used Linux before. Yeah, they're probably not going to have a fun time.
+ 3. Ethernet only.
+ 4. It's possible to build a broken install.
+
+ These are not small issues. In a sense, these are almost worse. So
+ perhaps we deal with occasionally not having alternates. If it's going
+ to be an issue, it's likely to be with LTS point releases, and there are
+ solutions around that. They result in long update times, but that seems
+ like a much smaller price to pay.

[Lubuntu-admins] i need your help for 15.04's final release

2015-03-13 Thread Walter Lapchynski
I'm going to be pretty unavailable starting on the 20th, until the
30th. The release of Final Beta is the 26th. Could you help foster it
along? I especially call on Phill to take care of Release Management
duties. If that's not possible, let me know and I'll work on training
someone else before it's too late. Pretty soon
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/VividVervet/Beta2 should be up and we can sign
up for duties as to who is POC, etc.

I hope to finalize the Lubuntu QA t-shirt contest you all might have
heard me mention before I leave, so hopefully that will mean extra
help!!!

If there are questions, comments or concerns, please let me know.

[Lubuntu-admins] Fwd: Gearing up for 15.04 image testing

2015-04-13 Thread Walter Lapchynski
The final Vivid images will be available for testing this Friday, with
release planned the Thursday thereafter. I'm off to Linux Fest North
West on release day, so I can use all the help I can get.

One of the major problems that we have going on right now is that
desktop images don't seem to boot in virtual machines. This is a
problem for testing, of course. If anyone can do bare metal testing,
that would be great.

Meanwhile, if people could add to the bug report, that would be great:

We're in the final stretch now! April 23rd will be the release date
for vivid. With that in mind I would encourage everyone to prepare for
testing the final images. The final image milestone should be created
this Friday April 17th in preparation. The release team will continue
testing and iterating on this image until release. Please plan to test
this image and take part in verifying it for release. While you are
testing, don't forget about your favorite flavors of ubuntu who can
also use your help and testing expertise. Thanks and happy testing!

[Lubuntu-admins] new IRC channel for QA/development: #lubuntu-devel

2015-04-21 Thread Walter Lapchynski
For those of you who have hung about #lubuntu-offtopic to discuss
non-support issues but would rather have a focused place to discuss
otherwise ontopic items (that channel can get REALLY offtopic at
times), we now have such a place. Since most of the discussion in this
regard relates to QA/development, we've gone with the Ubuntu
convention of using the -devel suffix, so you'll want to join
#lubuntu-devel. Please note that #lubuntu-qa does forward there if you
can only remember the name of the team/mailing list on Launchpad that
otherwise deals with this general subject. ☺

Re: [Lubuntu-admins] [Lubuntu-comms] Leadership

2015-05-08 Thread Walter Lapchynski
The need for backup leaders in all areas was mentioned in [yesterday's
leadership session at UOS][1]. This proves that this is something we
need to start implementing systemwide.

Meanwhile, we need to work on getting a Comms person in place, ASAP.
If we don't have a leader, we at least need to empower individuals to
take particular tasks. Anyone out there will to contribute anything at
all? Also, we need to leverage our Comms channels to get the word out
that we need someone. Can someone take on that task? Kris?

 Hello everyone,

I recently found out that Silverlion (Jens) had to hold his contributions to

Some say Kris is taking charge of that, although he is also very busy with
his personal life. However, we need someone who would preferably contribute
more regularly. Don't get me wrong here: I have an idea to develop a
communication plan, which can also help us finding more contributors to all
teams and also spread the word about our flavour. That implies a long-term
commitment. Even if we don't, it is hard to keep a consistent involvement
with the community if we are not engaging them correctly. And please, don't
get me wrong: I am not criticizing anyone, I am just trying to suggest some
 improvements, here and there.

You should know that's a poor explanation of your problem. That said, not
knowing the details, here's the instructions:
https://help.launchpad.net/Packaging/PPA/Uploading

Certainly your issue is not restricted to Lubuntu, so you may want to reach out
to Launchpad support if you continue to have issues. Just be more specific 

Just testing that the i...@lubuntu.me alias works. It does. And it goes
here. Just FYI. Speaking of FYIs..

I did this as part of Rafael and I trying to figure out how to properly
manage notifications from our Mastodon (@lubuntu@mastodon.technology in
case you weren't aware). I was hoping to set up all relevant
notifications (mentions, mainly) to go to email rather than us trying to
figure out multi-account clients. I was going to send it here but
there's a possibility of DMs ending up on a public list and I don't know
that I love that.

That said, I've put my own email in and will coordinate with Rafael and
whomever is involved with social media to ensure that they are replied
to accordingly. Rafael also has the login information, so he can always
log in and get the notifications. He just won't get the emails.

Re: [Lubuntu-admins] Request to mailing list Lubuntu-users rejected

2017-10-22 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Thanks for bringing this up. The instructions we give perhaps assume too much
familiarity with mailing lists and how they work. Nearly every mailing list
I've been on requires you to join the mailing list first. We could let the
email through, but then we'd run the risk of someone replying only to the list,
which the sender would then never see. So instead we reject and hope the user
can interpret the message to mean that they need to change their status from
non-member. It doesn't seem like you get any links pointing you in the right
direction.

That said, I'd like to advise we do the following changes:
 1. Change the website to read "Instructions to join the list and post to it
can be found at https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/lubuntu-users;
instead of "Send an email to…"
 2. Change the rejection message to "You need to first become a member of the
mailing list in order to post to it. Instructions to do so can be found at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/lubuntu-users;

If either of those two items were implemented, would that have solved your
problem?

[Lubuntu-admins] [Bug 1754174] Re: [Lubuntu] "Install Lubuntu" fails with several commands not found and permission denied

2018-03-10 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Adam, I'm curious about your Python statement. This only fails when
running Ubiquity directly from GRUB. Loading the live system and then
running Ubiquity works fine. Also, Ubiquity fails to fail for any other
flavours.

Things start going south in syslog here:

Mar 7 21:40:40 lubuntu ubiquity[1244]: switched to page partman
Mar 7 21:40:44 lubuntu ubiquity: /bin/autopartition: 292: /bin/autopartition:
Mar 7 21:40:44 lubuntu ubiquity: pvs: not found
Mar 7 21:40:44 lubuntu ubiquity:
Mar 7 21:40:47 lubuntu ubiquity[1244]: debconffilter_done: ubi-partman
(current: ubi-partman)
Mar 7 21:40:47 lubuntu ubiquity[1244]: Step_before = stepPartAsk

On a successful install from the live system we find a little bit
different behavior:

Mar 11 01:58:43 lubuntu ubiquity[2161]: switched to page partman
Mar 11 01:58:55 lubuntu ubiquity[2161]: debconffilter_done: ubi-partman
(current: ubi-partman)
Mar 11 01:58:55 lubuntu ubiquity[2161]: Step_before = stepPartAsk

Noting that /bin/autopartition is a script, I went looking for line 292,
but it wasn't there. It does, however source several other scripts in
/lib/partman/lib. Looking for only files with a line number 292 that
includes "pvs" in it, I found:

lib/lvm-base.sh:if $(pvs --noheadings --nosuffix -o pv_name |
grep -q "$device"); then

Seems like pvs is a variable created from enumerating the partman
devices and looking for ones with lvm method.

I'm not sure what this all means yet, but this sure is weird.
