It is a tricky issue. She is right to stand up to Linus if she feels this is verbal abuse but I wonder if she should she have tried raising this privately. Worried that Linus might start stepping back and that might result in poorer code in the long run. But then again maybe this is time for that to happen he is mortal after all. First saw this on the Register ( http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/07/16/torvalds_potty_mouty_fight_back/ ) a while back. The knee-jerk reaction is of course one of oh Lord, isn't Linus so full of it! Personally: 1. I think Linus is right. The interests in this OS are HUGE. You can't keep it ticking along using the politeness of committee. Perhaps there are other, better, methods, but we don't know what they are yet. And in this instance he was right. But now look at how we are debating message delivery rather than message! 2. In certain projects, there is that person that is special. Unique. You can work yourself into a lather (because of received democratic sensibilities) but really it's just a fact. Steve Jobs was unique in the Apple story. Linus is unique and special in the Linux story. When you have such people, you learn to accommodate them. To work with them or around them. To eat a little humble pie. Or go away. The exceedingly left-brained may find this hard to swallow, but it is the best way. So in Linus's case, you account for his upbringing, cultural differences, etc., and you shut up and dance. Or go away. I don't think you can do what he does for Linux without being bit of an a***hole. P. At that level There are few if any people that are nice You cannot please thousands of people all the time. So you just do it your way until it fails. Don't worry, Billy. Linux likes it rough, both dealing and being dealt. As long as the points are valid and the arguments sound, he won't take offence, and even if they aren't, it'll take more than words to deter him from coding. And even if he were to do *that*, his legacy will live on. We have a lot of good developers hacking away at the kernel, and I'm proud of them all. Re: [LUG] why 'hacker' stood up against verbal abuse
If you follow LKML regularly, you'll know that this isn't the first time or last Linus has been rude to developers (anyone remember the furore with Con Kolivas a few years ago?) so it's just a storm in a teacup. Sharp will either go the way of CK and stop contributing, meaning someone else takes over, or it'll blow over and our beloved dictator will keep maintaining the kernel. It would be interesting to see how many would miss Linus if some of the more abrasive high-profile kernel maintainers like Andrew Morton and Alan Cox were to take over maintaining the mainline kernel! Oh, and this is fun: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/07/15/linux_for_workgroups/ The first release candidate of version 3.11 of the Linux kernel has arrived, and to commemorate the occasion, Linux creator Linus Torvalds has given the kernel a new codename and a new, Microsoft-inspired boot logo to match.
