But the sub-options are invisible. E.g., when I click on File, I see a drop-down menu, but I don't see the entries on each line. They're still clickable though -- if I click on what seems to be line 2, I get another menu saying Select template file. I don't think any packages are missing (I have regex, libjpeg, etc.) Does anyone have any idea what's going on? I have experienced something similar, in my case the toolbar buttons displayed a weird symbol as well. To fix my problem, I deleted everything, including cygwin, and started fresh. It appeared to just be a bad install. This has happened a couple of times. Recommendation, reinstall and follow install instructions to the letter. Well except perhaps that bit about tetex ;) Rob

Re: what is native about native windows programs?
David A. Case wrote: Is this distinction between cygwin and native a meaningful one? Is it just a matter of path syntax ( /home/green vs. C:\home\green )? A matter of personal taste and familiarity? Or are there other differences that argue in favor of one form of LyX and latex over another? Please, more knowledgeable people on the list correct me, but let me add some thoughts on the issue. If I understand cygwin correctly, than it is more or less one huge pile of code creating effectively Unix on the top of Windows (path syntax is just that one percent tip of the iceberg, there is for example whole huge cygwin32.dll etc.). It makes porting to Windows much more simple, but the results tend to be much more bulky, slower, non-compatible with the rest of Windows etc. (probably, not so bad, but kind of similar to different Windows for Unix environments -- wine, WABI, or MacWindows). More knowledgeable critique of cygwin (I am not a programmer, but just a humble social science PhD student) can be found around people working on competing projects like MinGW and gnuwin32. Im am curios about this since I build lyx-1.2.3 on a SuSE 8.0 that had 3 different versions of xforms installed (0.88, 0.89 and 1.0). ldd showed, that lyx-1.2.3 was dynamically linked against all three versions of xforms. The configure process showed, that xforms 1.0.0 was found on the system - it didn't mention the other two versions. It seems to me that this could be a bug in the make file. Ideas? I can't find anything like it in my LaTeX log, but I did ran a Texhash after putting the new .bst file into /usr/local/share/texmf/bibtex/bst/misc. I also did a reconfigure. But when I try to use this generated file and view my dvi-output I get question marks for all of my citation references and no reference list. In LyX itself all looks fine. My LaTeX log file shows some warnings like: ... LaTeX Warning: Citation 'author' on page XX undefined on input line XXX ... And this is probably my problem. But now I have no idea where to look next to solve this problem. What is your input in the database-entry of the bibtex-dialog? Does LaTeX find the bib-file? I inserted it by browsing my filesystem and selecting the .bst and .bib files. LyX removes the extensions afterwards. To me it looks like a problem in the .bib-file. Are all your entries correct? If you're not sure about that, check it or send me a minimal document with your bib-file (if it's too large, by privat mail). The .bib file did work before I tried to make my own .bst file. making new templates
Folks, I'm in the US Army and I'd like to write documents in LyX. This won't be a big surprise to you, but the army is a bit particular about the formatting of her documents. There's a whole AR (Army Regulation) on it, http://www.usapa.army.mil/pdffiles/r25_50.pdf. It's Preparing and Managing Correspondence, AR 25-20. Anyway, the downside is I'm no great shakes at LaTeX. Is there a howto on taking an existing template and modifying it somewhere? I'd be interested in making the template, but I'm looking at the great unknown to start with. I can use MS word, but it a pain in the neck. Openoffice is physically unable to format in the Army way. No joke -- I even have a bug (6464) on it at sw.openoffice.org. Any hints for a newbie? -- Andrew Diederich

I'd suggest you grab the text from one and try to format it in LyX, asking specific questions as you go. The first would be how to replicate those odd line numbers, as they look to be the most difficult (to me, anyways, perhaps they're a solved problem to others). The numberings, indentation, etc all looks pretty straightforward. Best of luck.

I didn't link anything on purpose, actually. You don't link anything on purpose, it is done during the build process. Feel free to ask further, Vinay Hello, do a 'ldd lyx-1.2.3 ldd-output.txt' and add it as an attachment to your reply. Ideas? making new templates
Best of luck.

citation question marks and no bibtex references
Hi, I tried to make my own .bst file with makebst. Does anyone know what I should do? Thanks, Marco -- There is no time like the pleasant.

Ideas? To me it looks like a problem in the .bib-file. Are all your entries correct? If you're not sure about that, check it or send me a minimal document with your bib-file (if it's too large, by privat mail). HTH, Dominik.-

I can't find anything like it in my LaTeX log, but I did ran a Texhash after putting the new .bst file into /usr/local/share/texmf/bibtex/bst/misc. I also did a reconfigure. > > But when I try to use this > > generated file and view my dvi-output I get question marks for all of my > > citation references and no reference list. I inserted it by browsing my filesystem and selecting the .bst and .bib files. LyX removes the extensions afterwards. > To me it looks like a problem in the .bib-file. The .bib file did work before I tried to make my own .bst file. The .bib file is unchanged. I'll send my .bib file to your private adress. It's 12K. > HTH, > Dominik.- Regards, Marco -- 'I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it." -- Mae West
