superscripts).
Don't know the answer to 1. since I'm on Linux.. but for 2., you
need to either hit Ctrl-M while in math mode, or type \textrm
(again, in math mode), and you'll see a small blue box appear into

can exit this mode by hitting the right arrow and you'll be back in

Math mode with Lyx Aqua

2004-02-22 Thread Gattuso, Jean-Pierre
I run Lyx 1.3.4 Aqua on Mac OSX (panther) using a French keyboard. I
have two questions, one about superscripts and the other about the
math mode.

1- I click on the formula toolbar button and type E=mc^2. The display
is: E=mc22 (the caret does not seem to be recognized).

2- Also, letters in math mode are shown in italics. How does one
avoid this? For example, I want to type g m-2 d-1, with "g", "m" and
"d" as normal text not in italics (and, of course, "-2" and "-1" are

Thanks in advance for any help.

with the patched version you can simply run latex2html texfile,
then all jpg images are unchanged or with the image_type

Maria,

I don't know, but I can try. The only time I used a Mac (in 1989) I locked
it up in less than 2 minutes because all I saw were pictures and I had no
idea what they represented.

Are you using OS X? If so that's sufficiently linux that commands I know
should work.

First thing is to find out if ispell is installed on your system. Try
'locate ispell', or 'whereis ispell', or even 'which ispell'. On this
system, the latter command returns '/usr/bin/ispell' so I know the
executable is present and where it's located.

Second thing is to tell LyX what spell checker to use. Start with the Edit
menu and take that to the second entry from the bottom (Preferences). The
second heading in the list widget on the left is "Language Settings". Click
on the small, square box to the left and it will open a sub-menu with two
entries: Language and Spellchecker. Click on the latter and see if 'ispell'
is in the top data entry widget. If not, enter it and click on "OK". If it
is, I'll pass to someone who knows LyX more intimately than do I.

HTH,

As it has turned out meanwhile, the problem (in my case) does not appear
if I run everything on an up-to-date Debian Sarge machine ... initially,
I used tex2pdf on a somewhat outdated Sarge-based machine. (E.g. tetex

Again, thanks for pointing me to tex2pdf :).

Raphael,

If you place the cursor immediately to the left of the figure box you
should be able to open the paragraph layout dialog and change the alignment
to 'center'.
The captions, however, are placed according to length. In my book, most
captions are quite short. They are centered on the page and do not extend
the width of the image. When the caption length is greater than the page
width, it is automatically wrapped from page margin to page margin. I
presume that this is a design decision that prevents the caption from
occupying excessive vertical space with wide horizontal margins. That would
not look proper, would alter the perspectives of the entire page, and would
resemble what one can produce using a word processor.
This caption algorithm may also be a function of the document class. I
don't know if it would change if you change your document among article,
report, book or whatever.
Just to offer an opinion, my perspective is to let the professional
graphic artists, typographers and page designers make the decisions. I write
and I could not care less about fine details of the page layout. Just this
weekend I had a bit of this with a friend of mine who writes computer books
(using winWord, but he used to use Framemaker). His comments on a review
draft I e-mailed to him included: "I don't like the header format", "why
don't you put a larger leading between paragraphs" and the like. Well, I
told him I could not care less about such details, that Springer-Verlag has
defined what they want in great and gory detail (sent him a copy of the
formatting guide for monographs) and that one of the points of using a
typesetting back end was to let it make these decisions for me. I think that
word processing software leads to obsessiveness in minor details, often to
the detriment of content. Not to imply this is true in your case, of course!

1) I tried Insert->float figure, insert->graphics but it always gave me

2) I get an error if I set the paragraph justified to anything other

3) I now get no errors but the pictures are placed half way across the

Hi Herbert

Since you keep having to say the above, I wrote it down for you here:

http://wiki.lyx.org/beta/pmwiki.php?pagename=LyX.Fonts

so in the future you may just give that link if that's more convenient for
you. Since I'm sure you have further information about this on your site,
maybe you could link to that information from the wiki page above?

/Christian

PS. There's "shortcut" to your site in the sense that if you write e.g.

LatexTips:index.html

this will actually result in this URI

http://latex.s-v-p.de/index.html

which is of course useful since if you ever change your host, only the
shortcut has to be redefine.

2004-02-22 Thread cghan

Hello,

I have uploaded CJK-LyX-(xforms,qt)-1.3.4 at the new ftp site,

CJK-LyX-(xforms,qt)-1.3.4 is a patched version of (xforms,qt) port of
lyx-1.3.4 for multibyte language users such as Chinese, Japanese and
Korean users.

Thanks to Mr. Satoru Goto([EMAIL PROTECTED]), this version contains an
important fix of the bug in exporting lyx files to ascii or latex files. I
also found with the help from Mr. Atsushi Shimmra([EMAIL PROTECTED]), a
workaround of the problem displaying symbols in CJK-LyX-qt. So, I

CJK-LyX-xforms users should also notice that a new i18ned xforms lib.,

Of course, but at the cost of "wasting" time of different people answering
the same on different places because they are unable to see that their
answer has already been given. The correct "procedure" is to ask on one

synthesizing the unsatisfactory answers and explaining why they are so).

I can see that. In any case (on a practical side), it is convenient to
follow these rules even if you don't agree with them, as many people will
simply ignore you if you don't.

xdvi answer: try writing a number followed by 's'. It is explained in the

Why?!

It can be considered rude... see the section at the end here:

	http://www.linuxmafia.com/~rick/faq/index.php?page=netiquette

The author of that section should probably read Immanuel Kant before putting
forward his moral statements, otherwise he may be seen as a master
oppressing the slaves, I mean, oppressing the people needing help.

option, the other one using dvipdfm
there are several ways to get a pdf file:
- pdflatex -> no page numbers
- ps2pdf   -> no page numbers
- dvipdfm  -> page numbers
the last two are conversion programs and they are
different in passing pagesettings to the pdf file.
Choose for the bottom margin for example 15mm, then
you'll get pagenumbers for all of them.

\papersize Custom
why custom and not a4paper? Layout->Document->Paper
Because it is going to be printed on paper having the custom size.
ok, understood. But in this case you should use the
PostScript view instead of the dvi one, because xdvi
doesn't realize the different pagesetting.
it is impossible to place a pagenumber in a 5mm footer!
ok, sounds reasonable, the strange thing is: it worked with lyx 120, so I
didn't pay attention.
I suppose that this depends to the package geometry, which
has in the latest version other defaults. And at 1.2 time
there exists another version of geometry.
by the way: do not use the font setting from inside LyX,
it is deprecated. Write instead in the preamble:
\usepackage[scaled=0.92]{helvet}
\usepackage{mathptmx}
\usepackage{courier}% luximono looks nicer here
I'm not sure what you mean...
do not use layout->Document-Font. Nearly all selections
are deprecated. Write the above into the preamble.

I attached the files, created120 means created with Lyx 120, created 132 means
the file was created with lyx 132. It was exactly the lyx file I sent
already. Using lyx 132 I created two files: One using the "pdf" export

ok, sounds reasonable, the strange thing is: it worked with lyx 120, so I

ok, I will check out, wether this works with the dtp-Programm on which the
file is processed afterwards whether this works

I'm not sure what you mean...
