Andre's solution doesn't work (I actually tried it before posting), but
Angus's solution works for all figures.
If you (I) wanted to frame just one figure, I found out you can put
\usepackage{framed} in the preamble but instead of redefining the figure
environment, you can put \begin{framed} and \end{framed} inside the lyx
float before and after the graphics.

I have the impression that the two menu entries
View : PDF (pdflatex)
View : PDF (ps to pdf)
are intechanged, i.e. the first does what the second should and vice
versa.
One of the many symptoms: if I have \usepackage[pdfborder=0]{hyperref}
in my preamble and choose View : PDF (pdflatex) I get an error Error
while executing ps2pdf...
I am using LyX 1.3.5 on Mac OS X.
BTW: Is there a bug reporting system (e.g. Bugzilla) for LyX?

Hmmm. You can check by examining the contents of lyxrc.defaults (find it in
the $PREFIX/Resources/lyx directory on OSX I think). Here I have

Hi I am having problems with some but not all my eps images. In some cases lyx gives the following in the graphics box 'Error converting to loadable format' This tends to happen with figures that I have drawn in another package, say Illustrator, and then exported as eps. Illustrator does this by default, but it can be turned off. Latex cannot use files with embedded previews.

ImageMagick's convert utility (which you're probably using to generate the bitmap file that is displayed on the LyX screen) tends to barf when it encounters such nastiness. Hence the error message. Try using the ps2eps command line utility http://www.telematik.informatik.uni-karlsruhe.de/~bless/ps2eps.html It's a perl script, so you'll need to have Perl http://www.perl.org/ installed. I've found that it sanitises dodgy PS and EPS files well and it has the added advantage of preserving a vector graphics image as a vector graphics image, unlike GhostScript's eps2eps and ps2ps utilites which turn your nice vector graphic into a bitmap. -- Angus

It will solve *this* problem, but most likely cause others, as redhat's qt has bugfixes/patches not in the original source. More graphics problems!
I have solved the previous problem to a certain extent but it seems to have generated another more serious one. The initial fix was to ensure that the colour graphics were in RGB not CMYK. THis appears to mean that lyx can deal with the image conversion. If i view in dvi then the file and graphics are processed correctly. If however i choose any of the view pdf options including dvipdfm then i get a page error telling me thats the file cannot be displayed. In pdflatex it doesnt give an error, just doesnt display any graphics at all. Any advice. This document is being sent off to a publisher who may or may not need the pdf files. I cant assume that dvi will be fine for them. Geoff

umlaut problem
Hi, I am a pretty new user of lyx (with little idea of latex) and have run into two problems, both relating to using German umlauts in lyx (1.3.5). Basically (I type them, dvi/pdf displays them) they work fine, but spell checker and bibliography cause some problems (also with the sz-ligature): The spell checker stops with an error (Spell checking failed) whenever I want to add a new word to the dictionary that contains an umlaut or an sz-ligature. The bibliography displays umlauts, but can't cope with the sz-ligatures (converting them to ss in the author names - not in the book title) . Also, the sorting algorithm puts umlauts as the last letters of the alphabet, e.g. sorting in faa after foo. As far as I know, an umlaut (e.g. o) can be treated as oe or simply as o, while the sz-ligature is indeed treated (but not spelt) as ss for sorting. I am using a customised bibtex style created with the makebst tool; in the document settings, natbib-use is enabled. I use tkbibtex to enter my bibliographic data. I found a number of things on the web on umlaut problems, but haven't seen anything that covers the sorting and the lyx-specific spell checking issue. But perhaps somebody has already cracked these particular nuts. Thanks for any ideas! Tilo

Make sure you have ticked the input encoding (Eingabekodierung
verwenden) box in EditPreferencesLanguagesSpell-Check ==

I have the impression that the two menu entries
View : PDF (pdflatex)
View : PDF (ps to pdf)
are intechanged, i.e. the first does what the second should and vice
versa.
One of the many symptoms: if I have \usepackage[pdfborder=0]{hyperref}
in my preamble and choose View : PDF (pdflatex) I get an error Error
while executing ps2pdf...
I am using LyX 1.3.5 on Mac OS X.
BTW: Is there a bug reporting system (e.g. Bugzilla) for LyX?

Hmmm. You can check by examining the contents of lyxrc.defaults (find it in
the $PREFIX/Resources/lyx directory on OSX I think). Here I have

Hi I am having problems with some but not all my eps images. In some cases lyx gives the following in the graphics box 'Error converting to loadable format' This tends to happen with figures that I have drawn in another package, say Illustrator, and then exported as eps. Illustrator does this by default, but it can be turned off. Latex cannot use files with embedded previews.

ImageMagick's convert utility (which you're probably using to generate the bitmap file that is displayed on the LyX screen) tends to barf when it encounters such nastiness. Hence the error message. Try using the ps2eps command line utility http://www.telematik.informatik.uni-karlsruhe.de/~bless/ps2eps.html It's a perl script, so you'll need to have Perl http://www.perl.org/ installed. I've found that it sanitises dodgy PS and EPS files well and it has the added advantage of preserving a vector graphics image as a vector graphics image, unlike GhostScript's eps2eps and ps2ps utilites which turn your nice vector graphic into a bitmap. -- Angus

It will solve *this* problem, but most likely cause others, as redhat's qt has bugfixes/patches not in the original source. More graphics problems!
I have solved the previous problem to a certain extent but it seems to have generated another more serious one. The initial fix was to ensure that the colour graphics were in RGB not CMYK. THis appears to mean that lyx can deal with the image conversion. If i view in dvi then the file and graphics are processed correctly. If however i choose any of the view pdf options including dvipdfm then i get a page error telling me thats the file cannot be displayed. In pdflatex it doesnt give an error, just doesnt display any graphics at all. Any advice. This document is being sent off to a publisher who may or may not need the pdf files. I cant assume that dvi will be fine for them. Geoff

umlaut problem
Hi, I am a pretty new user of lyx (with little idea of latex) and have run into two problems, both relating to using German umlauts in lyx (1.3.5). Basically (I type them, dvi/pdf displays them) they work fine, but spell checker and bibliography cause some problems (also with the sz-ligature): The spell checker stops with an error (Spell checking failed) whenever I want to add a new word to the dictionary that contains an umlaut or an sz-ligature. The bibliography displays umlauts, but can't cope with the sz-ligatures (converting them to ss in the author names - not in the book title) . Also, the sorting algorithm puts umlauts as the last letters of the alphabet, e.g. sorting in faa after foo. As far as I know, an umlaut (e.g. o) can be treated as oe or simply as o, while the sz-ligature is indeed treated (but not spelt) as ss for sorting. I am using a customised bibtex style created with the makebst tool; in the document settings, natbib-use is enabled. I use tkbibtex to enter my bibliographic data. I found a number of things on the web on umlaut problems, but haven't seen anything that covers the sorting and the lyx-specific spell checking issue. But perhaps somebody has already cracked these particular nuts. Thanks for any ideas! Tilo

Make sure you have ticked the input encoding (Eingabekodierung
verwenden) box in EditPreferencesLanguagesSpell-Check ==

Andre's solution doesn't work (I actually tried it before posting), but
Angus's solution works for all figures.
If you (I) wanted to frame just one figure, I found out you can put
\usepackage{framed} in the preamble but instead of redefining the figure
environment, you can put \begin{framed} and \end{framed} inside the lyx
float before and after the graphics.

View-PDF actions interchanged?
Hello list!
I have the impression that the two menu entries
View : PDF (pdflatex)
View : PDF (ps to pdf)
are intechanged, i.e. the first does what the second should and vice
versa.
One of the many symptoms: if I have \usepackage[pdfborder=0]{hyperref}
in my preamble and choose "View : PDF (pdflatex)" I get an error "Error
while executing ps2pdf"...
I am using LyX 1.3.5 on Mac OS X.
BTW: Is there a bug reporting system (e.g. Bugzilla) for LyX?

Hmmm. You can check by examining the contents of lyxrc.defaults (find it in
the $PREFIX/Resources/lyx directory on OSX I think). Here I have

Insert graphics
Hi I am having problems with some but not all my eps images. In some cases lyx gives the following in the graphics box 'Error converting to loadable format' This tends to happen with figures that I have drawn in another package, say Illustrator, and then exported as eps. It doesnt always happen though! Anyone else had a simialr problem or know a fix Geoff

Illustrator does this by default, but it can be turned off. Latex cannot use files with embedded previews.

Ok well removing the previews didnt work. Is it bad practice to just use the .pdf versions of all the graphics? Are there any scaling or printing issues with this Geoff

ImageMagick's "convert" utility (which you're probably using to generate the bitmap file that is displayed on the LyX screen) tends to barf when it encounters such nastiness. Hence the error message. Try using the ps2eps command line utility http://www.telematik.informatik.uni-karlsruhe.de/~bless/ps2eps.html It's a perl script, so you'll need to have Perl http://www.perl.org/ installed. I've found that it sanitises dodgy PS and EPS files well and it has the added advantage of preserving a vector graphics image as a vector graphics image, unlike GhostScript's eps2eps and ps2ps utilites which turn your nice vector graphic into a bitmap. -- Angus

Right now I am compiling the latest version from trolltech hoping that will solve the problem. It will solve *this* problem, but most likely cause others, as redhat's qt has bugfixes/patches not in the original source. More graphics problems!
I have solved the previous problem to a certain extent but it seems to have generated another more serious one. The initial fix was to ensure that the colour graphics were in RGB not CMYK. THis appears to mean that lyx can deal with the image conversion. If i view in dvi then the file and graphics are processed correctly. If however i choose any of the view pdf options including dvipdfm then i get a page error telling me thats the file cannot be displayed. In pdflatex it doesnt give an error, just doesnt display any graphics at all. Any advice. This document is being sent off to a publisher who may or may not need the pdf files. I cant assume that dvi will be fine for them. Geoff

umlaut problem
Hi,
I am a pretty new user of lyx (with little idea of latex) and have run into
two problems, both relating to using German umlauts in lyx (1.3.5). Basically
(I type them, dvi/pdf displays them) they work fine, but spell checker and
bibliography cause some problems (also with the sz-ligature):
The spell checker stops with an error ("Spell checking failed") whenever I
want to add a new word to the dictionary that contains an umlaut or an
sz-ligature.
The bibliography displays umlauts, but can't cope with the sz-ligatures
(converting them to "ss" in the author names - not in the book title) . Also,
the sorting algorithm puts umlauts as the last letters of the alphabet, e.g.
sorting in f"aa after foo. As far as I know, an umlaut (e.g. "o) can be
treated as "oe" or simply as "o", while the sz-ligature is indeed treated
(but not spelt) as "ss" for sorting.
I am using a customised bibtex style created with the makebst tool; in the
document settings, natbib-use is enabled. I use tkbibtex to enter my
bibliographic data.
I found a number of things on the web on umlaut problems, but haven't seen
anything that covers the sorting and the lyx-specific spell checking issue.
But perhaps somebody has already cracked these particular nuts.

Make sure you have ticked the "input encoding" ("Eingabekodierung
verwenden") box in Edit>Preferences>Languages>Spell-Check ==

Are you using bibtex? You might need to "tex-encode" the umlauts as {\"a}
... {\"s} there (depending on bibtex version and -style).

Bibtex comes with detailed documentation (including umlauts and
sorting) in btxdoc.dvi.

So try to mimick this in your float: Insert the float via Insert>Floats>Figure
and in the float use ERT for \begin{framed} and \end{framed}.
