OT: Proof reading - usually with doc?????

Hi

I wanted my thesis to be proofread at my university, and the language lab
told me they ONLY accept word doc files. So I am wondering? are they trange
or do I have strange ideas about doc for proofreading? I would have expected
them to work in pdf or hardcopies.

I assume that the result of \small was a smaller font size.  I've 
considered that once or twice but shied away because I thought it might 
look funny.


As to \url not splitting at the dot, its workings are a bit of a 
mystery, but IIRC there are some parameters (documented in the style 
file itself) that you can tweak to induce splits.

  Probably strange. Most proofreaders and copy editors insist on working on
a printed copy. That's what I always do, too. There are errors that we don't
see on the screen that jump right up at us on the printed paper. This may
well be a factor that many of us grew up reading books, newspapers,
magazines, and other documents printed on the processed remains of dead
trees. Future generations, brought up with TV, video games, and computers
may no longer be able to read material printed on paper because they had too
little exposure to it.

  Talk with your major advisor and get him/her on your side. It's much
easier to mark up and make revisions on a paper copy. Then, drag the
language lab into the 20th century.

Just to be clear, are you talking about Memoir *class* or Memoir 
*template*.  The yes in the config dialog means that (a) LyX knows it 
has a Memoir layout and (b) it found the Memoir class file, so you 
should have book (Memoir) in the Document - Settings... - Document 
Class - Document class drop-down list.  AFAIK, though, there is no 
Memoir template (at least I don't have one installed), so if you're 
looking for it via File - New from template you're destined to be 
disappointed.

  Since the URL is set in a monospaced typeface it's not nearly as noticable
as we'd think. It turns out, though, that the size doesn't always return to
\normal at the end. Haven't figure that one out yet.


As to \url not splitting at the dot, its workings are a bit of a mystery,
but IIRC there are some parameters (documented in the style file itself)
that you can tweak to induce splits.


  I did have an option in the \usepackage command, but it didn't seem to
help.

  For this particular document -- proposed federal regulations originally
published in the Federal Register -- there are so many URLs embedded in the
text that it's distracting and ugly. So, I went back and put them all in
footnotes. Much easier reading and cleaner looking.

Thanks, Paul.  I found that out yesterday, and under 
document-settings-Document class-drop down list there it was!  Appreciate 
the help from everyone on the list.  The reason why I love LyX is not just 
the typesetting beauty of it, but mostly the screen.  It is easy on old eyes!

Reconfigure is internal to LyX. You also need to let LaTeX/TeX know
that
 you've added styles. Run /usr/share/texmf/bin/texhash (or wherever Ubuntu
 puts texhash) as root, then reconfigure LyX. You should see Memoir after
 this.

texlive-latex-recommended

You mean back to the 20th century, right?  :-)  My guess is that the 
proofreaders use the change tracking features in 
grit.teethWord/grit.teeth to indicate proposed changes.  You can do 
this with PDFs if (a) the permissions on the files are correctly 
configured and (b) you have Acrobat (not Reader, which can at best do 
comments), but I suspect that's just more effort than the proofreaders 
(who are, at heart, bureaucrats) will tolerate.


All that said, I happily endorse any attempt to free the masses from the 
tyranny of the Evil Empire.  If they won't do pen-and-paper, maybe they 
can be convinced to work with an unlocked PDF.

Thakns - I feel much better now.
I thought exactly the same. And in addition, if you want to have track
changes enabled, you have to specify it - this is more then bad practise I
would say.
But I guess they integrated a word count / edited word count into their
billing system (they are charging 0.13 South African Rand per edited word)
so they are doing they accounting based on word doc...

 language lab into the 20th century.



Well - I am fed up with fighting them - they will not get my money and I
will send it to another proofreader.

That's frustrating, but it's a common problem. People are just so
unenlightened, eh?

You could try exporting it as a Rich Text Format document and send it to
them that way. Should go into MS Word just fine. I can't personally attest
that LaTeX2rtf will do everything right in converting a complex thesis file,
but worth a shot. See here:

Now, if they say we accept only files with a .doc extension, then yes
they're strange (and annoyingly myopic).

Everybody is free to decide in which format he wants to work. When the language lab is a company 
they should also be able to accept PDF:
For proofreading, I never would use Word as evry change is saved with the file and you don't have 
control in the end what has been changed by you and what not. The best for such things is to use 
PDF. The proofreading person can then highlight mistakes or propose changes using annotations. The 
advantage is that you can decide what changes you want to accept and what not. The profreader cannot 
edit/change your thesis.

Don't know about Xubuntu, but it works for me on Gutsy.  Try 'which 
aspell' and maybe 'aspell --version' in a terminal to make sure it's 
installed correctly.  Then check Tools - Preferences... - Language 
settings - Spellchecker - Spellchecker executable and make sure it's 
set to either 'aspell' or 'aspell (library)'.

Paragraph layout dialog missing spacing section in lyx 1.5

Is there a reason that the Above and Below-sections are missing from
the Paragraph Layout dialog in lyx 1.5? I really want to be able to
individually space my paragraphs, but I can not seem to find a good way
to do this. I used to be so convenient in 1.4. Is the dialog moved
somewhere else?

through wc.

  That's a potential conflict of interest. If the language lab lives off
user charges, they have a vested interest in making many changes. You can
correct typographical mis-spellings within LyX and do a visual check for
grammar, missing punctuation, etc.

inverted iota

Hi all. I'm having trouble figuring out how to make
the definite description symbol (which is an
inverted Greek iota). There seem to be two ways to
do this, both of which fail for me.

One is to use graphicx package and the rotatebox
command. But this does not seem to work inside
math equations (at least I don't see how to make it
work).

The other - supposedly - is to use the phonetic package.
I found such a thing but really don't know how to
properly install it ...

Any help would be appreciated, TIA,

bug in conversion of old lyx file to 1.5.3 (uwthesis template)

I'm trying to use lyx 1.5.3 to read a lyx file which was created with an 
older version of lyx (the University of Washington lyx thesis template: 
http://staff.washington.edu/fox/tex/uwthesis_lyx.zip).  When I open the 
file,  this triggers a lyx bug, either in lyx or within our install of 
lyx (error message below the dotted line).


Could someone suggest a workaround?

Can't help with the traceback, but on my home PC (Win XP) I was able to 
import the file into LyX 1.5.3 and then save it with no crashes and just 
a couple or so error messages.  The 1.5.3 version is attached.


Is there a uwthesis class or style file (not included in your zip 
archive)?  I ask because I diffed the 1.4.x and 1.5.x versions of the 
.lyx file, and other than a bunch of predictable changes, there were two 
instances where \begin_layout Chair morphed into \begin_layout 
Standard.  LyX griped about both, although it didn't gork over them. 
The layout file does not mention a Chair style.  Don't know if that 
would cause lyx2lyx to throw a hissy fit.


BTW, the traceback seems to relate to the zlib library.  Were you 
attempting to convert the file while it was in an archive?  The last 
line of the error dump suggests not, but I wonder why then lyx2lyx was 
executing something gzip-related.  FWIW, I unzipped the archive and 
loaded from the unzipped directory.

How to install the phonetic package depends to some extent on what LaTeX 
distribution you're using (you didn't specify).


How to use it in LyX is straightforward:  \usepackage{phonetic} in the 
preamble and \textit{\riota} in a math inset or in ERT in the text body.

You mean back to the 20th century, right?  :-)  My guess is that the 
proofreaders use the change tracking features in 
grit.teethWord/grit.teeth to indicate proposed changes.  You can do 
this with PDFs if (a) the permissions on the files are correctly 
configured and (b) you have Acrobat (not Reader, which can at best do 
comments), but I suspect that's just more effort than the proofreaders 
(who are, at heart, bureaucrats) will tolerate.


All that said, I happily endorse any attempt to free the masses from the 
tyranny of the Evil Empire.  If they won't do pen-and-paper, maybe they 
can be convinced to work with an unlocked PDF.

Probably strange. Most proofreaders and copy editors insist on working
 on
 a printed copy. That's what I always do, too. There are errors that we
 don't
 see on the screen that jump right up at us on the printed paper. This may
 well be a factor that many of us grew up reading books, newspapers,
 magazines, and other documents printed on the processed remains of dead
 trees. Future generations, brought up with TV, video games, and computers
 may no longer be able to read material printed on paper because they had

 little exposure to it.

I thought exactly the same. And in addition, if you want to have track
changes enabled, you have to specify it - this is more then bad practise I
would say.
But I guess they integrated a word count / edited word count into their
billing system (they are charging 0.13 South African Rand per edited word)
so they are doing they accounting based on word doc...

That's frustrating, but it's a common problem. People are just so
unenlightened, eh?

You could try exporting it as a Rich Text Format document and send it to
them that way. Should go into MS Word just fine. I can't personally attest
that LaTeX2rtf will do everything right in converting a complex thesis file,
but worth a shot. See here:

Now, if they say we accept only files with a .doc extension, then yes
they're strange (and annoyingly myopic).

Everybody is free to decide in which format he wants to work. When the language lab is a company 
they should also be able to accept PDF:
For proofreading, I never would use Word as evry change is saved with the file and you don't have 
control in the end what has been changed by you and what not. The best for such things is to use 
PDF. The proofreading person can then highlight mistakes or propose changes using annotations. The 
advantage is that you can decide what changes you want to accept and what not. The profreader cannot 
edit/change your thesis.

Don't know about Xubuntu, but it works for me on Gutsy.  Try 'which 
aspell' and maybe 'aspell --version' in a terminal to make sure it's 
installed correctly.  Then check Tools - Preferences... - Language 
settings - Spellchecker - Spellchecker executable and make sure it's 
set to either 'aspell' or 'aspell (library)'.

Paragraph layout dialog missing spacing section in lyx 1.5

Is there a reason that the Above and Below-sections are missing from
the Paragraph Layout dialog in lyx 1.5? I really want to be able to
individually space my paragraphs, but I can not seem to find a good way
to do this. I used to be so convenient in 1.4. Is the dialog moved
somewhere else?

through wc.

  That's a potential conflict of interest. If the language lab lives off
user charges, they have a vested interest in making many changes. You can
correct typographical mis-spellings within LyX and do a visual check for
grammar, missing punctuation, etc.

inverted iota

Hi all. I'm having trouble figuring out how to make
the definite description symbol (which is an
inverted Greek iota). There seem to be two ways to
do this, both of which fail for me.

One is to use graphicx package and the rotatebox
command. But this does not seem to work inside
math equations (at least I don't see how to make it
work).

The other - supposedly - is to use the phonetic package.
I found such a thing but really don't know how to
properly install it ...

Any help would be appreciated, TIA,

bug in conversion of old lyx file to 1.5.3 (uwthesis template)

I'm trying to use lyx 1.5.3 to read a lyx file which was created with an 
older version of lyx (the University of Washington lyx thesis template: 
http://staff.washington.edu/fox/tex/uwthesis_lyx.zip).  When I open the 
file,  this triggers a lyx bug, either in lyx or within our install of 
lyx (error message below the dotted line).


Could someone suggest a workaround?

Can't help with the traceback, but on my home PC (Win XP) I was able to 
import the file into LyX 1.5.3 and then save it with no crashes and just 
a couple or so error messages.  The 1.5.3 version is attached.


Is there a uwthesis class or style file (not included in your zip 
archive)?  I ask because I diffed the 1.4.x and 1.5.x versions of the 
.lyx file, and other than a bunch of predictable changes, there were two 
instances where \begin_layout Chair morphed into \begin_layout 
Standard.  LyX griped about both, although it didn't gork over them. 
The layout file does not mention a Chair style.  Don't know if that 
would cause lyx2lyx to throw a hissy fit.


BTW, the traceback seems to relate to the zlib library.  Were you 
attempting to convert the file while it was in an archive?  The last 
line of the error dump suggests not, but I wonder why then lyx2lyx was 
executing something gzip-related.  FWIW, I unzipped the archive and 
loaded from the unzipped directory.

How to install the phonetic package depends to some extent on what LaTeX 
distribution you're using (you didn't specify).


How to use it in LyX is straightforward:  \usepackage{phonetic} in the 
preamble and \textit{\riota} in a math inset or in ERT in the text body.

As to \url not splitting at the dot, its workings are a bit of a 
mystery, but IIRC there are some parameters (documented in the style 
file itself) that you can tweak to induce splits.

Just to be clear, are you talking about Memoir *class* or Memoir 
*template*.  The "yes" in the config dialog means that (a) LyX knows it 
has a Memoir layout and (b) it found the Memoir class file, so you 
should have "book (Memoir)" in the Document -> Settings... -> Document 
Class -> Document class drop-down list.  AFAIK, though, there is no 
Memoir template (at least I don't have one installed), so if you're 
looking for it via File -> New from template you're destined to be 
disappointed.

  Since the URL is set in a monospaced typeface it's not nearly as noticable
as we'd think. It turns out, though, that the size doesn't always return to
\normal at the end. Haven't figure that one out yet.


As to \url not splitting at the dot, its workings are a bit of a mystery,
but IIRC there are some parameters (documented in the style file itself)
that you can tweak to induce splits.


  I did have an option in the \usepackage command, but it didn't seem to
help.

  For this particular document -- proposed federal regulations originally
published in the Federal Register -- there are so many URLs embedded in the
text that it's distracting and ugly. So, I went back and put them all in
footnotes. Much easier reading and cleaner looking.

Thanks, Paul.  I found that out yesterday, and under 
document->settings->Document class->drop down list there it was!  Appreciate 
the help from everyone on the list.  The reason why I love LyX is not just 
the typesetting beauty of it, but mostly the screen.  It is easy on old eyes!

Don't know about Xubuntu, but it works for me on Gutsy.


"Gutsy" is actually the name of the latest stable release (7.10) of  
the general OS underlying all of the various .*buntu incarnations.

inverted iota

Hi all. I'm having trouble figuring out how to make
the "definite description" symbol (which is an
inverted Greek iota). There seem to be two ways to
do this, both of which fail for me.

One is to use graphicx package and the rotatebox
command. But this does not seem to work inside
math equations (at least I don't see how to make it
work).

The other - supposedly - is to use the phonetic package.
I found such a thing but really don't know how to
properly install it ...

Any help would be appreciated, TIA,

bug in conversion of old lyx file to 1.5.3 (uwthesis template)

I'm trying to use lyx 1.5.3 to read a lyx file which was created with an 
older version of lyx (the University of Washington lyx thesis template: 
http://staff.washington.edu/fox/tex/uwthesis_lyx.zip).  When I open the 
file,  this triggers a lyx bug, either in lyx or within our install of 
lyx (error message below the dotted line).


Could someone suggest a workaround?

/atm/goose/home/scotto/meetings/doc/thesis/thesis/uwthesisTemplate/lyx/uwthesis.lyx

Can't help with the traceback, but on my home PC (Win XP) I was able to 
import the file into LyX 1.5.3 and then save it with no crashes and just 
a couple or so error messages.  The 1.5.3 version is attached.


Is there a uwthesis class or style file (not included in your zip 
archive)?  I ask because I diffed the 1.4.x and 1.5.x versions of the 
.lyx file, and other than a bunch of predictable changes, there were two 
instances where "\begin_layout Chair" morphed into "\begin_layout 
Standard".  LyX griped about both, although it didn't gork over them. 
The layout file does not mention a "Chair" style.  Don't know if that 
would cause lyx2lyx to throw a hissy fit.


BTW, the traceback seems to relate to the zlib library.  Were you 
attempting to convert the file while it was in an archive?  The last 
line of the error dump suggests not, but I wonder why then lyx2lyx was 
executing something gzip-related.  FWIW, I unzipped the archive and 
loaded from the unzipped directory.

How to install the phonetic package depends to some extent on what LaTeX 
distribution you're using (you didn't specify).


How to use it in LyX is straightforward:  \usepackage{phonetic} in the 
preamble and \textit{\riota} in a math inset or in ERT in the text body.
