Conflict with Hyperref + Floats?

2008-08-08 Thread Ryan Cross
HI,
I posted a message yesterday about a problem I was having with algorithm
floats. I did a lot of debugging and finally (after very long line by line
debugging) found that the problem seems to be some sort of conflict when
using the hyperref package. Can anyone else confirm this? Does anyone know

Summations, limits...

2008-08-08 Thread winblowzxp

I'm trying to do summations and limits. I press the button which lets me do
top and bottom, but LyX adds the lines above and below, but it also centers
the expression to the center of the page. How do I keep LyX from doing
this?

2 Abstracts, 1 German

2008-08-08 Thread Sebastian Rohrer

Hi all,

I am completing my PhD-Thesis in lyx. The thesis is in English, but
since it's a German university, I am required to feature two abstracts,
one in English, one in German.

For the English abstract everything is fine: I go to the beginnig of
the text, change the text to Abstract and start typing. The heading
Abstract is inserted automatically.

Now I inserted a page break and again changed to Abstract. Now
however, I need the German word Zusammenfassung as the heading. The
problem is, lyx does not insert a heading at all in this second
abstract. And if it did, I wouldn't know how to change it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot,

Sebastian

change size of chapter titles

Re: Excel graphs into Lyx

2008-08-08 Thread Konrad Blum
Well, I do not use Excel but OO-Calc.
It reads Excel sheets to a certain degree...

then, after preparing the graph of a table in OO-Calc, I copy the graph to
the OO-Impress (PowerPoint clone). This software allows me to export to
jpg in quite high quality.

Well OO is for free...

Anybody with experience of this?

PS: The people who have the free time to learn a bit gnuplot might want to

couldn't figure out how to save the figure (chart) by itself as an image. I
saved the worksheet as a web page to force the chart into its own image
file, but it was a GIF. How did you get them into JPGs? Is this Office 2007,
the new and unimproved Office? Either way, the image that came out was not
good and couldn't be resized in an editor - forget the reason why, something
 about scalable, vectorization...

One thing I've done in a pinch is to make the image fill as much of the
screen as possible and use Print Screen, then paste that image into an
editor like GIMP. This will work to get decent resolution for simple
stuff, but I wouldn't do it for publications or any final product.

Numbered sections: why 0.1 and not 1 etc.?

2008-08-08 Thread Pierfranco Minsenti
Hi everybody,

I am a newcomer and I am using since a few days Lyx 1.5.4 for Mac and the
class report: why if I use numbered sections (without parts, chapters etc.:
just sections) the authomated numbers are 0.1, 0.2 etc? I would like to have
normal numbers like 1, 2 etc. not decimal numbers.
What can I do to have normal numbers? Is this a problem of the class report,
since if I use the class article I don't have this problem?
Thanks for your help.

Do you include hyperref last in your preamble, that is, after all

I remember cases where I got very strange errors if new float types

how to set a larger font size in amsbook

2008-08-08 Thread Abe Lau
It looks to me that I could only choose a maximum base font size of 12 in
amsbook. Is there any way I could use a slightly larger font size, e.g.
13/14?

I have tried to add 13 to the file amsbook.layout. While the lyx interface
allows me to change the size to 13, it has no effect on the output PDF.

The new 1.5.6 version of LyX for the Mac comes by default with the English
UI. Is that done by purpose or a bug? With the version 1.5.5 I didn't have
this problem. Will the change of the environment variable affect other
programs as well?

This seems to be a regression. Until this is fixed, you can use the
following workaround:

In Terminal.app, type export LANG=de_DE and then start Lyx from within
that Terminal window with /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx.
Adapt the above path to where you have your LyX.app, and change the
german de_DE to e.g. fr_FR for French, etc. This will not affect any
other applications since the above LANG setting is only in effect in
this one Terminal window.

If you would want to do this permanently (and system-wide), you can use
the http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCEnvironment/ preference pane and
set LANG to whatever the termnial command

defaults read Apple Global Domain AppleLocale
tells you.

HTH,
Konrad

P.S. For testing, I will post two alternative builds soon, maybe you can
test if the same problem persists with these.

I'll add a plug for R (http://www.r-project.org/) R like gnuplot produces
much nicer graphs than any spreadsheet program. Unfortuately, it's not all

I have another problem with lyx, namely that I am not able to use a personal

Is it possible to set another dictionary? how? must it have a particular

I'm looking forward to receiving your replies!

Using the toptesi package with Lyx

I use miktex and i have downloaded the package from the repositories, but

uses TOPtesi)

I really wouldn't want to change editor at this point so if anyone knows how

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand. I don't see a button for top and

\sum\_0^n. Limits are sub- and superscripts, nothing else. See section

   \begin{center}%

As you can see, there isn't much to it.

The problem is likely that you don't have a layout file for this class,
which means that LyX doesn't know about it, though LaTeX might. It's
based upon report.cls, so the attached should do it, or at least be a
good start. Put this in the /layout directory of your local LyX
configuration directory---that would be ~/.lyx/layouts/ in my case---and
then launch LyX, hit ToolsReconfigure, close, and relaunch. You should
then have a toptesi layout available, and import should work.

Summations, limits...

Sebastian

Well, I do not use Excel but OO-Calc.
It reads Excel sheets to a certain degree...

then, after preparing the graph of a table in OO-Calc, I copy the graph to

jpg in quite high quality.

Well OO is for free...

Anybody with experience of this?

couldn't figure out how to save the figure (chart) by itself as an image. I
saved the worksheet as a web page to force the chart into its own image

the new and unimproved Office? Either way, the image that came out was not

One thing I've done in a pinch is to make the image fill as much of the

I have tried to add 13 to the file amsbook.layout. While the lyx interface

The new 1.5.6 version of LyX for the Mac comes by default with the English
UI. Is that done by purpose or a bug? With the version 1.5.5 I didn't have
this problem. Will the change of the environment variable affect other
programs as well?

This seems to be a regression. Until this is fixed, you can use the
following workaround:

In Terminal.app, type export LANG=de_DE and then start Lyx from within
that Terminal window with /Applications/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx.
Adapt the above path to where you have your LyX.app, and change the
german de_DE to e.g. fr_FR for French, etc. This will not affect any
other applications since the above LANG setting is only in effect in
this one Terminal window.

If you would want to do this permanently (and system-wide), you can use
the http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCEnvironment/ preference pane and
set LANG to whatever the termnial command

defaults read Apple Global Domain AppleLocale
tells you.

HTH,
Konrad

P.S. For testing, I will post two alternative builds soon, maybe you can
test if the same problem persists with these.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand. I don't see a button for top and

\sum\_0^n. Limits are sub- and superscripts, nothing else. See section

You should
then have a toptesi layout available, and import should work.

think it is great! but when I wanted to create my output (dvi) with
marked changes, lyx says it is not possible because I don't have
installed xcolors/soul and dvipost... but I do have installed them!

Does anyone know this problem? and maybe a solution?

 thank you!

 álvaro

PS: rebooting didn't help either! :-(

If you installed them after you installed LyX, you need to reconfigure
LyX (Tools - Reconfigure), then shut LyX down and restart it.

If you installed them before you installed LyX (or have reconfigured LyX
since you installed them), open Help - LaTeX Configuration and see if
they were found. At least in version 1.5.6, divpost is section 7.3,
soul is 7.17, and xcolor is 7.21. They should all say yes. If not (and
assuming you've reconfigured LyX), you need to verify that your LaTeX
distribution knows where to find them. Open a command shell and run
 'kpsewhich dvipost.sty', 'kpsewhich soul.sty' and 'kpsewhich xcolor.sty'
to verify their locations. If they are not found, refresh the LaTeX
 filename database.

 /Paul

How do you change the visualization of changes? Seems the default is to show
them colored. I'd like changebars. Maybe overstrike?

Summations, limits...

2008-08-08 Thread winblowzxp

I'm trying to do summations and limits. I press the button which lets me do
top and bottom, but LyX adds the lines above and below, but it also centers
the expression to the center of the page. How do I keep LyX from doing
this?

2 Abstracts, 1 German

2008-08-08 Thread Sebastian Rohrer

Hi all,

I am completing my PhD-Thesis in lyx. The thesis is in English, but
since it's a German university, I am required to feature two abstracts,
one in English, one in German.

For the English abstract everything is fine: I go to the beginnig of
the text, change the text to "Abstract" and start typing. The heading
"Abstract" is inserted automatically.

Now I inserted a page break and again changed to "Abstract". Now
however, I need the German word "Zusammenfassung" as the heading. The
problem is, lyx does not insert a heading at all in this second
abstract. And if it did, I wouldn't know how to change it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot,

Sebastian

Re: Excel graphs into Lyx

Well, I do not use Excel but OO-Calc.
It reads Excel sheets to a certain degree...

then, after preparing the graph of a table in OO-Calc, I copy the graph to
the OO-Impress (PowerPoint "clone"). This software allows me to export to
jpg in quite high quality.

Well OO is for free...

Anybody with experience of this?

Hello Peter,

Peter Baumgartner wrote:

Could anyone explain how to change the environment variable LANG on the Mac

The new 1.5.6 version of LyX for the Mac comes by default with the English
UI. Is that done by purpose or a bug? With the version 1.5.5 I didn't have
this problem. Will the change of the environment variable affect other
programs as well?

This seems to be a regression. Until this is fixed, you can use the
following workaround:

In Terminal.app, type "export LANG=de_DE" and then start Lyx from within
that Terminal window with "/Applications/LyX.app/Contents/MacOS/lyx".
Adapt the above path to where you have your LyX.app, and change the
german de_DE to e.g. fr_FR for French, etc. This will not affect any
other applications since the above LANG setting is only in effect in
this one Terminal window.

If you would want to do this permanently (and system-wide), you can use
the http://www.rubicode.com/Software/RCEnvironment/ preference pane and
set LANG to whatever the termnial command

defaults read "Apple Global Domain" AppleLocale
tells you.

HTH,
Konrad

P.S. For testing, I will post two alternative builds soon, maybe you can
test if the same problem persists with these.

This is because report classes use parts as highest level. When you don't need or have parts, the
use an article calss instead. The UserGuide explains you more about this.

This is a known problem. Workarounds are in detail explained in the

You might also consider Grace, which (in my opinion) is easier to learn than
gnuplot. The Grace (or xmgrace) format is accepted by LyX directly, and is a

I'll add a plug for R (http://www.r-project.org/) R like gnuplot produces
much nicer graphs than any spreadsheet program. Unfortuately, it's not all
that easy to learn but the professional appearance matches what LyX does for
text. Outputs in png, ps, jpeg ...

Here are a couple of examples of the possible output.

http://ca.geocities.com/jrkrideau/images/michele1.graph.pdf

See http://addictedtor.free.fr/graphiques/ for some really sophisticated
examples.

Use of Personal Dictionary

Hello,

I have another problem with lyx, namely that I am not able to use a personal
dictionary. Although I set it to use a file in a particular directory, it

Is it possible to set another dictionary? how? must it have a particular
format? I have just copied the one of aspell...

I'm looking forward to receiving your replies!

I'm sorry, I'm not sure I understand. I don't see a button for "top and

\sum\_0^n. Limits are sub- and superscripts, nothing else. See section

 \else
   \small
   \begin{center}%
 {\bfseries [EMAIL PROTECTED]

As you can see, there isn't much to it.

The problem is likely that you don't have a layout file for this class,
which means that LyX doesn't know about it, though LaTeX might. It's
based upon report.cls, so the attached should do it, or at least be a
good start. Put this in the /layout directory of your local LyX
configuration directory---that would be ~/.lyx/layouts/ in my case---and
then launch LyX, hit Tools>Reconfigure, close, and relaunch. You should
then have a toptesi layout available, and import should work.

I have tried to add 13 to the file amsbook.layout. While the lyx
interface
allows me to change the size to 13, it has no effect on the output PDF.

This setting is passed as an option to the amsbook.cls, and it's up to it
what sizes to accept. 12pt seems to be the largest. memoir.cls seems to
allow 14pt.

Thanks rh,

  \normalsize \linespacing=\baselineskip
}
not v sure if modifying it will give me what I want or not... will try that
out later. Has anyone else have similar experience, or am I missing
something.

You certainly could try adapting this to a new \DeclareOption section.
You might even just include the bit from memoir.cls.

How do you change the visualization of changes? Seems the default is to show
them colored. I'd like changebars. Maybe overstrike?
