Dear list,

How do I convert a table, paragraph or figure marked as US English
into UK English, when the document is already set to UK English
(Document - Settings - Language)?

I have set my document to use UK English (British), but when I copy
and paste tables from another Lyx document written in US English,
these copied items are underlined as being in foreign language
(underlined in blue).

While I know how to deactivate the blue underlining, it still doesn't
convert those items into UK English. Selecting everything and setting
the document to UK English also doesn't do the trick, and I fear I'll
end up with a document containing a horrid mixture of US and UK
English.

I am using Lyx 1.5.5 on Ubuntu 8.04. The Lyx binary was obtained from
the backports repository.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Citation style 'Text after' separator


Hi there,

when I add a citation in LyX (version 1.6.0) I get to choose some  
formatting options including entering text into the 'Text after'  
field. Any text entered here is then appended to the citation itself  
separated with a comma. Is there any way to change the separator to be  
a colon?


i.e. instead of:

[MindfulBody, 12-15]

I'd like to see:

[MindfulBody: 12-15]

Hebrew and Proof Environment

Not sure. There have been a lot of changes to the RTL stuff, so it may 
be that you've caught a bug in it. Let's forward this to the devel list, 
and see.



Another question - I use LyX mostly for summarizing lecture notes and I
would like to have 2 option:
1) to create a list of theorems/claims
2) to create an exercise/solution and an example environments.

Is that possible to do?

  
Anything you can do in LaTeX, you can do in LyX. Regarding (2), look at 
the Customization manual, chapter 5. I'm not sure about lists of 
theorems. Surely it can be done, but I don't know how.

Yes, since you wrote nothing I assumed you are using the standard bibliography 
with article.sty. With Jurabib, you can probably customize this differently. 
Have a look at the Jurabib documentation.

\thispagestyle{empty} works for me (1.7svn, article, hebrew and english, but no 
bibtex or amstex). Note that the command has to be in ERT on the specific page, 
not in the preamble (which is obvious, given that it's for a specific page --- 
but I think I once had trouble because of that ;) ). Besides the ERT, I also set 
the Document-Settings...-Page Layout-Heading style to empty --- I'm not 
sure if both are necessary or not...

I'm not totally clear as to how your keyboard is set up, and I think that that 
may be the problem (for what it's worth, I'm able to create the C-g y binding 
without any trouble, with Hebrew; this is in 2.0svn, but I don't think this 
should have changed appreciably even from 1.5).


Do you use a keyboard map (Tools-Preferences-Keyboard- use keyboard math; 
the exact menus may be a little different in 1.5)?


Does your keyboard output english or hebrew (i.e., do you switch languages at 
the keyboard level, or *only* using F12 in LyX)?


When you say so I have configured my keyboard to have all of the greek letters, 
including √, ∞, ∝, ≤≥ ⊆⊇ ⊂⊃ ←→ ⇐⇒ − ≠ ≡ ∀ ∃ and many more --- did you do 
anything to actually configure the keyboard, or just paste stickers on or

thanks, that was what I was missing. For some reason \pagestyle{empty} doesn't
work for the first page which requires an explicit \thispagestyle{empty}. I put
it in the preamble and that didn't work.

In Tools-Preferences-Keyboard I have use keyboard map (not use
keyboard math) checked, and the First is null, and the Second is
hebrew.

I am staying always in English, and using F12 exclusively to switch
between the languages (usually I don't even need that − I type only in
Hebrew, and in math mode it types the variables in English

Very simple: I have reconfigured GNOME, so now when I press Alt Gr +
s, for example, I get σ. If I press the same key combination with
Caps-Lock on, or with Shift key pressed as well, I get Σ. Pressing the
key that is just near the z key on its left produces ∀, and doing that
with Shift produces ∃, and many more options.

I haven't put any stickers. I know the keys (at least most of them) by
heart − it's very simple. I do it like that since even though I know TeX
quite good, it is much shorter to write emails to friends like this:
Let x∈P and y∈Q. Since P and Q are normal, xyx^-1y^-1∈P∩Q={e}... ⇒
something... or compare ...hence P\subseteq Q to ...hence P⊆Q.

So, in LyX, when I press Alt Gr + a I get α, but I don't want to get α
− I want to get \alpha, and I believed that LyX might have a solution
to this need (and, apparently, it has − but only in 1.6). Vim, for
example, knows really well how to deal with that.

Actually, I have mentioned here two different problems. With the C-g y
problem, I still have to check the solution that Guenter Milde offered
me (something about collisions). About the αβγ problem (unicode

installing texlive-latex-extra should've solved that for you.

The problem here is that the error message is not displayed within
LyX IMHO.

The cua.bind is in usr/share/... and the hebrew.bind is in
~/.lyx1.5.1/bind/



The first line of hebrew.bind (\bind_file cua) is including cua.bind. I don't 
remember the rules in terms of whether you can override bindings, and they may 
also have changes since 1.5. The easiest thing to do may be to just copy 
cua.bind from /usr to your local lyx bind directory, rename it to mycua or 
something, get rid of the C-g y in there, and include that in hebrew instead 
of cua. See if that helps.

No. However, perhaps you can try installing 1.6 in a virtualized environment 
(Qemu, VirtualBox are relatively easy to set up, I think), so that it won't 
affect your production system until you've got it configured correctly...

 installing texlive-latex-extra should've solved that for you.
 

Just to clarify. I did install it months ago, 1.5.5 was OK. Then I
installed 1.6, playing with layout, class file. Maybe I did delete by
mistake that file..I dont know. 
Maybe I should have uninstalled and reinstalled texlive-latex-extra to
solve that.
Sorry for the dirty way that I tried to solve the problem, but it
worked.

Bug in LyX 1.6.0

I had a strange behavior occurring in my last LyX session:

I was happily writing in the main editing window, while having the outline 
open in a separate window and on a separate monitor when suddenly the main 
window went blank. And I really mean blank: the editing pane became a white 
blanket (I use the default pink as background color). Interestingly, the tab I 
had open on another file was completely unaffected.

 I had not been saving for a while, so I was afraid I had lost some work. To 
my surprise, the window was still responsive, the menus were visible and 
accessible, etc. I could save my file, leave LyX and restart. On the console, I 
had a few screenful of errors of this kind:

X Error: RenderBadPicture (invalid Picture parameter) 182
  Extension:156 (RENDER)
  Minor opcode: 7 (RenderFreePicture)
  Resource id:  0x2b2e6fa
X Error: BadPixmap (invalid Pixmap parameter) 4

When I quit LyX, the following messages appeared on the console:

thanks, that was what I was missing. For some reason \pagestyle{empty} 
doesn't
work for the first page which requires an explicit \thispagestyle{empty}. 
I put

it in the preamble and that didn't work.

set language for all document elements

Dear list,

How do I convert a table, paragraph or figure marked as US English
into UK English, when the document is already set to UK English
(Document - Settings - Language)?

I have set my document to use UK English (British), but when I copy
and paste tables from another Lyx document written in US English,
these copied items are underlined as being in foreign language
(underlined in blue).

While I know how to deactivate the blue underlining, it still doesn't
convert those items into UK English. Selecting everything and setting
the document to UK English also doesn't do the trick, and I fear I'll
end up with a document containing a horrid mixture of US and UK
English.

I am using Lyx 1.5.5 on Ubuntu 8.04. The Lyx binary was obtained from
the backports repository.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Citation style 'Text after' separator


Hi there,

when I add a citation in LyX (version 1.6.0) I get to choose some  
formatting options including entering text into the 'Text after'  
field. Any text entered here is then appended to the citation itself  
separated with a comma. Is there any way to change the separator to be  
a colon?


i.e. instead of:

[MindfulBody, 12-15]

I'd like to see:

[MindfulBody: 12-15]

Hebrew and Proof Environment

Not sure. There have been a lot of changes to the RTL stuff, so it may 
be that you've caught a bug in it. Let's forward this to the devel list,

Another question - I use LyX mostly for summarizing lecture notes and I
would like to have 2 option:
1) to create a list of theorems/claims
2) to create an exercise/solution and an example environments.

Is that possible to do?

  
Anything you can do in LaTeX, you can do in LyX. Regarding (2), look at 
the Customization manual, chapter 5. I'm not sure about lists of 
theorems. Surely it can be done, but I don't know how.

Yes, since you wrote nothing I assumed you are using the standard bibliography 
with article.sty. With Jurabib, you can probably customize this differently. 
Have a look at the Jurabib documentation.

I'm not totally clear as to how your keyboard is set up, and I think that that 
may be the problem (for what it's worth, I'm able to create the C-g y binding 
without any trouble, with Hebrew; this is in 2.0svn, but I don't think this 
should have changed appreciably even from 1.5).


Do you use a keyboard map (Tools-Preferences-Keyboard- use keyboard math; 
the exact menus may be a little different in 1.5)?


Does your keyboard output english or hebrew (i.e., do you switch languages at 
the keyboard level, or *only* using F12 in LyX)?


When you say so I have configured my keyboard to have all of the greek letters, 
including √, ∞, ∝, ≤≥ ⊆⊇ ⊂⊃ ←→ ⇐⇒ − ≠ ≡ ∀ ∃ and many more --- did you do 
anything to actually configure the keyboard, or just paste stickers on or 
something? I mean, when you press a key, will LyX be getting a g or some 
unicode character?

In Tools-Preferences-Keyboard I have use keyboard map (not use
keyboard math) checked, and the First is null, and the Second is
hebrew.

Does your keyboard output english or hebrew (i.e., do you switch languages at

It is important to say also that the configuration is very basic, and it
works in ANY software on my computer, including LyX. It's not a hack
in the risky aspect of it.

installing texlive-latex-extra should've solved that for you.

The problem here is that the error message is not displayed within
LyX IMHO.

~/.lyx1.5.1/bind/



The first line of hebrew.bind (\bind_file cua) is including cua.bind. I don't 
remember the rules in terms of whether you can override bindings, and they may 
also have changes since 1.5. The easiest thing to do may be to just copy 
cua.bind from /usr to your local lyx bind directory, rename it to mycua or 
something, get rid of the C-g y in there, and include that in hebrew instead 
of cua. See if that helps.

No. However, perhaps you can try installing 1.6 in a virtualized environment 
(Qemu, VirtualBox are relatively easy to set up, I think), so that it won't 
affect your production system until you've got it configured correctly...

Just to clarify. I did install it months ago, 1.5.5 was OK. Then I
installed 1.6, playing with layout, class file. Maybe I did delete by
mistake that file..I dont know. 
Maybe I should have uninstalled and reinstalled texlive-latex-extra to
solve that.
Sorry for the dirty way that I tried to solve the problem, but it

I had a strange behavior occurring in my last LyX session:

I was happily writing in the main editing window, while having the outline 
open in a separate window and on a separate monitor when suddenly the main 
window went blank. And I really mean blank: the editing pane became a white 
blanket (I use the default pink as background color). Interestingly, the tab I 
had open on another file was completely unaffected.

 I had not been saving for a while, so I was afraid I had lost some work. To 
my surprise, the window was still responsive, the menus were visible and 
accessible, etc. I could save my file, leave LyX and restart. On the console, I 
had a few screenful of errors of this kind:

thanks, that was what I was missing. For some reason \pagestyle{empty} 
doesn't

set language for all document elements

Dear list,

How do I convert a table, paragraph or figure marked as US English
into UK English, when the document is already set to UK English
(Document -> Settings -> Language)?

I have set my document to use UK English (British), but when I copy
and paste tables from another Lyx document written in US English,
these copied items are underlined as being in foreign language
(underlined in blue).

While I know how to deactivate the blue underlining, it still doesn't
convert those items into UK English. Selecting everything and setting
the document to UK English also doesn't do the trick, and I fear I'll
end up with a document containing a horrid mixture of US and UK
English.

I am using Lyx 1.5.5 on Ubuntu 8.04. The Lyx binary was obtained from
the backports repository.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

ltcaption.sty is part of the caption package:

Citation style 'Text after' separator


Hi there,

when I add a citation in LyX (version 1.6.0) I get to choose some  
formatting options including entering text into the 'Text after'  
field. Any text entered here is then appended to the citation itself  
separated with a comma. Is there any way to change the separator to be  
a colon?


i.e. instead of:

[MindfulBody, 12-15]

I'd like to see:

[MindfulBody: 12-15]

Hebrew and Proof Environment

Not sure. There have been a lot of changes to the RTL stuff, so it may 
be that you've caught a bug in it. Let's forward this to the devel list,

Another question - I use LyX mostly for summarizing lecture notes and I
would like to have 2 option:
1) to create a list of theorems/claims
2) to create an exercise/solution and an example environments.

Is that possible to do?

  
Anything you can do in LaTeX, you can do in LyX. Regarding (2), look at 
the Customization manual, chapter 5. I'm not sure about lists of 
theorems. Surely it can be done, but I don't know how.

Yes, since you wrote nothing I assumed you are using the standard bibliography 
with article.sty. With Jurabib, you can probably customize this differently. 
Have a look at the Jurabib documentation.

may be the problem (for what it's worth, I'm able to create the "C-g y" binding 
without any trouble, with Hebrew; this is in 2.0svn, but I don't think this 
should have changed appreciably even from 1.5).


Do you use a keyboard map (Tools->Preferences->Keyboard-> "use keyboard math"; 
the exact menus may be a little different in 1.5)?

In Tools->Preferences->Keyboard I have "use keyboard map" (not "use
keyboard math") checked, and the First is null, and the Second is
hebrew.

I am staying always in English, and using F12 exclusively to switch
between the languages (usually I don't even need that − I type only in
Hebrew, and in math mode it types the variables in English
automatically)

Very simple: I have reconfigured GNOME, so now when I press "Alt Gr +
s", for example, I get σ. If I press the same key combination with
Caps-Lock on, or with Shift key pressed as well, I get Σ. Pressing the
key that is just near the "z" key on its left produces ∀, and doing that
with Shift produces ∃, and many more options.

I haven't put any stickers. I know the keys (at least most of them) by
heart − it's very simple. I do it like that since even though I know TeX
quite good, it is much shorter to write emails to friends like this:
"Let x∈P and y∈Q. Since P and Q are normal, xyx^-1y^-1∈P∩Q={e}... ⇒
something..." or compare "...hence P\subseteq Q" to "...hence P⊆Q".

So, in LyX, when I press "Alt Gr + a" I get α, but I don't want to get α
− I want to get "\alpha", and I believed that LyX might have a solution
to this need (and, apparently, it has − but only in 1.6). Vim, for
example, knows really well how to deal with that.

Actually, I have mentioned here two different problems. With the "C-g y"
problem, I still have to check the solution that Guenter Milde offered
me (something about collisions). About the αβγ problem (unicode
characters' bindings), I thought of moving to 1.6 (but still
hesitating), unless you have a better solution!

The problem here is that the error message is not displayed within
LyX IMHO.

what exactly does your bind file look like? 


I'm attaching cua and hebrew here.

The cua.bind is in usr/share/... and the hebrew.bind is in
~/.lyx1.5.1/bind/



The first line of hebrew.bind ("\bind_file cua") is including cua.bind. I don't 
remember the rules in terms of whether you can override bindings, and they may 
also have changes since 1.5. The easiest thing to do may be to just copy 
cua.bind from /usr to your local lyx bind directory, rename it to mycua or 
something, get rid of the "C-g y" in there, and include that in hebrew instead 
of cua. See if that helps.

s", for example, I get σ. If I press the same key combination with
Caps-Lock on, or with Shift key pressed as well, I get Σ. Pressing the
key that is just near the "z" key on its left produces ∀, and doing

with Shift produces ∃, and many more options.

I haven't put any stickers. I know the keys (at least most of them) by
heart − it's very simple. I do it like that since even though I know

quite good, it is much shorter to write emails to friends like this:

No. However, perhaps you can try installing 1.6 in a virtualized environment 
(Qemu, VirtualBox are relatively easy to set up, I think), so that it won't 
affect your production system until you've got it configured correctly...
