Question on cross-reference dialog window
Hello, In my LyX installation 1.6.1 on Mac OSX I have a cross-reference window with an input field called Name which is always grayed out so that no input is possible. Maybe this should work for formatted references? But how to use it? BTW: IMHO there should be more explication in the User'sGuide how to use the package prettyref. In the German version even the important message Note: This feature is only available when you have the LaTeX-package prettyref installed is missing. Where can I report this desire? Thanks, Peter

Install LyX separately
Hello again, on my pursuit of happiness (install LyX) I bumped into something most inconvenient. When I try to install LyX using aptitude, apt-get, a .deb package, or the Synaptic Package Manager - just to name a few - the whatever manager does not realize that I already have a pretty and working installation of Texlive 2008 on my system. I'm inclined to assume this is true even for an existing Texlive 2007 installation. Granted, I did not use any package manager to install Texlive 2008. I used the network installation provided by Texlive, which IMHO is the better way because it directly follows the Texlive documentation and leaves me with a pretty texmf tree where I know what's where (or at least I can look it up in the docs). Anyway, I think when installing LyX, it should be aware that most parts needed are there, already. LyX should just install the remainder. Am I being too naive having this wish? Should I just compile and install my own LyX? Would that actually change anything? Can I just force-install a standalone installation of LyX and tell it where my texmf paths are? On an additional note: I also installed texmaker and it, too, installed some texlive stuff. Now I have texmf and texmf-texlive in /usr/share/. I don't like it. Why can't I have one central texlive and all other apps use it? I just came from Windows to Linux because I thought this whole business of interrelated apps just worked. Maybe I should ask this in a different mailing list. Happy to get your thoughts on this. Martin

But just how is it supposed to do that? Package managers have to consult a database of installed packages in order to know what is on your system; they can't just go out searching aimlessly to see if you've got all the necessary binaries, libraries, config files etc that are required by a given piece of software that you want to install. So if you don't install TexLive via the package management system for your distribution, the package managers (which all consult the same database) won't know it's there. A disadvantage of this, of course, is that you don't typically get bleeding edge versions of your favorite software. (Notably, Ubuntu and other Debian-based Linux distros are still waiting for TexLive 2008.) The advantage is that it works. ;-) Am I being too naive having this wish? Should I just compile and install my own LyX? You should be able to do this quite easily. With Debian-based distributions (as well as most (?) others) you can always use the /usr/ local hierarchy to install your own software, and my hunch is that that is where your TeXLive 2008 installation resides. Just set the prefix for your LyX compilation to /usr/local and then point LyX to your TeXLive hierarchy in the appropriate settings. On an additional note: I also installed texmaker and it, too, installed some texlive stuff. Now I have texmf and texmf-texlive in /usr/share/. I don't like it. Do I have to enter the encoding elsewhere?Best*Jess

[announce] fix for LyX installtions on Windows
As reported on this list, some users had problems to open older LyX files with LyX 1.6.x. The problem was a corrupted file of the scripting language Python that is used by LyX for file conversions. When you are affected by this problem, replace the file unicodedata.pyd that you find in LyX's installation folder under ~\bin\DLLs with this one: https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5117release_id=9949 For new LyX installations I fixed this in the new alternative installer version 4.17: https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5117release_id=15676 In this version I upgraded also from Python 2.6.0 to 2.6.1 to fix some other potential problems.
Martin

Please report me when there are still problems. regards Uwe

Question on cross-reference dialog window
Hello, In my LyX installation 1.6.1 on Mac OSX I have a cross-reference window with an input field called "Name" which is always grayed out so that no input is possible. pixelated output
Hi, I am new to Lyx and still experimenting but it seems really good so far. One thing I noticed though, when I process a new file the letters are somewhat pixelated if scaled to high resolutions whereas the pdf from files like Tutorial.lyx for example looks perfect. Now my question is of course, what do I have to do so that the output from files I create also looks that smooth. I attached a file to demonstrate what I mean. regards, Tao -- Sensationsangebot verlängert: GMX FreeDSL - Telefonanschluss + DSL für nur 16,37 Euro/mtl.!* http://dsl.gmx.de/?ac=OM.AD.PD003K1308T4569a <>

The standard LaTeX fonts are bitmap fonts. The tutorial uses PostScript fonts instead, which scale nicer. Go to Document>Settings>Fonts and select other fonts, for instance "Latin Modern" (this is what the Tutorial uses). Jürgen

When you are affected by this problem, replace the file "unicodedata.pyd" that you find in LyX's installation folder under ~\bin\DLLs with this one: https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5117_id=9949 For new LyX installations I fixed this in the new alternative installer version 4.17: https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5117_id=15676 In this version I upgraded also from Python 2.6.0 to 2.6.1 to fix some other potential problems. Please report me when there are still problems. regards Uwe
lyx templates site?
hi i have never made lyx templates before, but am about to graduate and lately i have doing a lot of resumes, SRS (software requirement specifications) and other such documents. my question is, if i put the templates together for the above said documents, can i post it up here on lyx mailing list? so that everyone can benefit from it -Sindhu PS: we could have a page on the lyx site listing these user made templates, couldn't we?
