break long equation into two lines

2006-11-08 Thread Reuben D. Budiardja
Hello,
When working with math formula in equation array mode, I found out that my
equation is too long on the page. I want to break it to two lines. Is there a
way do that ? All my equations are numbered (with label), when breaking long
equation into two lines, the first line should not be numbered.

Thanks for any help.

This isn't stupid - LyX's behaviour is a bit stupid on this:

the text in the field Enter label of the appearing dialog and pres OK.
Now the label is deleted but the formula is still numbered.

That's what I found out too, if you delete the text label, lyx would give (#).
What I want is to delete the numbering too. Because sometime I changed my
mind about the equation numbering (to not being numbered), or sometime I have
one equation that becomes too long after I put the label, so I want to split
it into two lines, but I don't want the two lines to have two numbering,
because it's one equation.
The only way I can do it is to delete the whole equation, and rewrite it from
the beginning.

Thanks for your respond.

Thank you. I just confirmed my self this after I tried compiling lyx on
another machine running Redhat Enterprise 3. I got exactly what I've seen
before without Instant Preview.

It's a fudge because the LyX math editor should be able to display most
 math itself.

Usually, when writing in Math mode in Lyx, greek symbols and math
symbols, etc are converted into nice looking symbol graphic that you
would see just like in the printed / ps version. I don't remember having
to enabled anything, it just worked. Now, instead I got ERT.

 You're missing some fonts.
 http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/Troubleshooting

Yep, it looks that way. This must have something to do with this new distro I
use since usually I could just compile lyx and the fonts works fine. I'll try
to install the missing fonts following the instruction there, and get back
here when I have more questions.

Thank you for the help.

Instant Preview does not work

2005-04-06 Thread Reuben D. Budiardja

Hello,
I just upgraded my workstation to Red Hat Enteprise Linux 4, and so I had to
recompile and re-install Lyx. I grabbed the latest Lyx release (lyx-1.3.5)
and recompiled. I use Lyx with QT front-end.

First, I am not sure if this is what is called Instant Preview. Usually,
when writing in Math mode in Lyx, greek symbols and math symbols, etc are
converted into nice looking symbol graphic that you would see just like in
the printed / ps version. I don't remember having to enabled anything, it
just worked. Now, instead I got ERT.

I am not sure what I did wrong, or what I should do to get this functionality
back. When I tried to enable the Instant Preview by checking the box under
Preference - Look and Feel - Graphics, and then try to write some greek
letter in Math mode using \gamma, I see this in console:

latex failed to compile 1lyxpreview.tex

Any help ? Thanks a lot in advance.

Typeset Math Formula inside Graphic

2003-08-18 Thread Reuben D. Budiardja

Hi all,
I have a need to put some formulas/equation inside graphics. I am not sure how
to do this best. Some of the graphic program that I use can't put any formula
(or a good typeset one, that is) in it. I use Dia for drawing (simple
drawing, kinda schematics only).
Any suggestions? Dia can export to many format (ps, eps, svg) but I am not
sure how to overlay formula in it using Lyx.

In relevant to this, is there any feature plans to put drawing capabilities in
lyx? Nothing fancy, but just the basic things for doing diagram, like box,
circle, lines, poligons.

Thanks for any help

Lyx cannot find file in tmp directory

2003-07-30 Thread Reuben D. Budiardja

Hello,
I left lyx open for few days, and then we I get back to it and try open new
files or close the file I had been working on, it gives a pop up box
something like Error couldn't open files /tmp/lyx* No such files or
directory. I guess it's because the file that it tries to find got erased by
the system. AFAIK, my system cleans the tmp files daily.
Will this cause problem, or should it just be ignored?

Latest stable Lyx, on Redhat Linux 7.3

Thanks for any info.

How to center material in Float

2003-04-01 Thread Reuben D. Budiardja

Hi,

Sometime when I use Float to put something in it (eg. graphics, table, etc),
the thing is not put in the center of the page when view it (using PS).

How do I make sure that the placement of whatever inside the float is on the
center of the page?

For graphics, most of the time it's centered, or seems like it at least,
although if I have a graphics a bit to big, it will be obvious that it's more
to the right than center. For table, it's just alligned to the left. Can
anyone help me fix that?

I am using Lyx-1.3 with the QT gui, on Redhat Linux 7.3. Anyhelp is
appreciated. Thanks.

to generate an rpm for other RH7 users?

I would, but I just saw the post that someone else beat me to it.

Just one more question. I ran:ldd
`which lyx` | grep fontconfig

and it returns nothing, so I assume that means my qt does not use
Xft2/fontconfig.
However, when I run lyx, I saw message Unable to add font path in the
console windows.
When I exit lyx, I saw also Mutex destroy failure: Device or resource busy.

From first glance though, looks like everything is find in lyx. Are these
messages something I should worry about?

Thanks again.

I believe that fontconfig is a RH8 thing, but it might also mean that you
haven't installed lyx (ie, it's still in the build dir and 'which' can't
 find it).

Silly me... of course... I haven't added the lyx binary to my PATH. Thus,
which didn't find it. But again, you're right, I don't use fontconfig.

I actually add the font path manually using chkfontconfig and that take cares
of the message.

Thanks.

configure lyx-1.3.0 without xforms

2003-02-07 Thread Reuben D. Budiardja

Hello,
With all the excitement of QT front-end, I decided to try it, but encountering
few problems. Just FYI that I read the INSTALL, README and ANNOUNCE files. I
am using RedHat 7.3 so all the existence binaries for RH 8.0 (lyx and
xforms-1.0) probably won't work for me.

Currently I have lyx.-1.2.1 with xform-0.88-9 that I am happy with, and use
regularly, thus I don't really want to mess around with that for now.

I want to try the newer version of lyx-1.2.3 with QT front-end. I know that it
wont configure/compile with my current xforms. So I want to do either:

1. Forget xforms, just use QT.
But how? How do I tell it in the configure options to ignore the old xform
version and just use QT? Last time I tried to just run configure, it failed.
The 'make' is also failed with recursive error. Is this suppose to happen?

OR

2. Install xform-1.0. But as I said, I tried to not mess around with my
current lyx+xforms things. So I tried to find xforms-1.0 source or something
so that I can install it in separate directory, eg /usr/local/xforms-1.0 and
then just tell Lyx's configure script to look for the xforms library in that
location using --with-extra-lib and --with-extra-inc option.
But no such thing exists, even in xform home page. The only thing that I can
find is the pre-build binary rpm libforms-1.0. Will this work for RH 7.3? and
will this not conflict with my current xforms (installed with rpms xforms?

Thanks a lot for any help. Kudos for Lyx developers.

writing vector in Math using bold

2002-09-12 Thread Reuben D. Budiardja

Hi,
I've been using Lyx in almost daily basis and enjoying it. I have couple
questions though. Often time, like in some textbook, vector is written as a
bold letter, rather than a letter with an arrow on top of it. How can I do
this while I am in Math mode in Lyx ? The bold style does not work in math
mode.

Second, although it's said in the User Guides that it's rather silly to use
big font size in Lyx (thus there are only 3 options: 10, 11, 12), I need to
use big font right now, since I am making somekind of poster using lyx. Is
there any way to do that?

Thanks a lot for any help.

Figure float and caption in 1.2.0

2002-08-02 Thread Reuben D. Budiardja

Hi all,
Please excuse this stupid question, but for the life of me, I cannot figure
out how to insert caption and label using figure float. In 1.16, all you need
to do is just Insert-Float-Figure Float, and you have a float with the
starting caption: Figure : in it.
This does not happen in 1.2.0. All I got is an empty float. How can I put
caption, figure label and automatic numbering into the Figure # ?

Thanks.

insert - ascii as lines. Then I blocked all the inserted code, and choose
lyx-code in the environment. The inserted code, somehow, has the protected
space all over the place. So the formatting layout looks right in Lyx. But
when I viewed using postcript, it looks like to me that the protected space
is not printed as space. Only regular space, which you can use multiple in
the lyx-code environemtn, is printed correctly.

I am thinking to do search and replace to replace the protected space with
regular space, but how do I do that ? Any workaround in this?

Thanks a lot for any help.

how to write angstrom symbol

2002-04-25 Thread Reuben D Budiardja

Hello,
Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question. But I have looked and have not
figure out how to write angstrom symbol, that is an A with a circle on top of
it. I used A with dot on top of it before, but my professor wouldn't accept
it for my thesis, and I need to finish that today.
Any help and pointer will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Different font size and paragraph spacing in part of document

2002-04-25 Thread Reuben D Budiardja

Hi,
I have a lyx document that uses the default size, double spacing, for
document type article. I'd like to include a source code of a c++ program as
an appendix. So I use Toggle Appendix, and then insert the c++ file with
Insert - ASCII as lines in Lyx-Code environment.

Now I have the source code, but they are in double spacing. What I really
want is to have that source code in single spacing, and even if possible
makes the letter smaller to save pages.

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Keep the equation numbering on - how to?

2002-04-17 Thread Reuben D Budiardja

Is there any way I can keep the equation numbering on automatically for the
whole document? I read through the user guide, but it seems that the only way
to have a numbered equation is by either insert a label for that equation, or
by typing math-number in the mini buffer.

What I'd like is just turn on numbering for all equations by default, and
only put label for some of the equations, for example for some important
formula for cross-referencing, and probably have a couple exceptions and turn
off the numbering for that equation only.

How do I accomplish that?

Thanks.

Figure does not show up and other stuff

2002-03-28 Thread Reuben D Budiardja

Hi,
I have lyx1.1.6fix4 installed using rpm in my Redhat 7.2. Whenever I insert a
figure (eps figure), the only thing that shows up on the screen is the box,
with the file name of the file, and the word rendering . . . . Although it
shows up fine when I view it using DVI or print it. Just wondering why is
this happening?

Secondly, I 've had hard time to use latex in lyx. I tried to use latex as an
interchageable formate between Maple, lyx, abiword, and files from Scientific
workplace, but most of the time, when I import to Lyx, it's failed. On
another time, it will read the file, but wih and error, thus whenever I tried
print or view DVI, it will give that error box with read caption, that I
can't fix. I don't know Latex, thus I am always stuck at that point. Not sure
which programs is faulty when import/export latex, but I just though someone
might have insight.

Third, is it better to compile the tar.gz, or install using rpm in my Redhat
7.2 system? I am trying to use lyx for my thesis now, and haven't had much
luck with it.

Thanks for any reply / information.

Copy text and paste it in math mode

2002-03-18 Thread Reuben D Budiardja

Hi,
I can't seem to copy text (either from another application or from text in
Lyx itself) and then paste it in Math mode. Is there any way to do that? or
at least insert a text file that containts math expression, and have lyx
display it in math mode?

The problem is, I do all my calculation and work in another application
(maple), but I want to write my final paper in lyx. It would be really
tedious if I have to write all those long messy equation by hand. I am using
lyx-1.1.6fix4-1 in RedHat linux 7.2.

Sorry for the newbie question. Thanks in advance for any help.

Reuben I am using lyx-1.1.6fix3-1, installed using rpm.

This is a known problem of mandrake (and redhat) urw-fonts package.

 Workaround include:

 - uncheck 'use scalable fonts' in Preferences
 - uninstall the broken urw-fonts package (but then ghostscript would
   complain)
 - install lyx 1.1.6fix4 which has code to work around this bug

Well, the problem solved when I do ps2epsi to my postscript file to make that

is Lyx supposed to be able to handle posctscript figure (not eps)? if yes,

Lyx error when insert postscript figure

2001-10-09 Thread Reuben D Budiardja

Hi,
I am a somewhat new user to Lyx. Here is what I am trying to do. I have a
postscript files that are generated by a program I wrote. The postscript
containts only figure like boxes, and some text.

I tried to insert that figure in a Lyx for me to write report. I do Insert,
Figure. The postscript figure renders OK, but when I tried to print (either
to printer direcly or to a file), I always got errors (it sayd There are
error in your document or something like that), and can't print.

I am pretty sure my postscript files are OK, because I can open them using
something like ghostscript or ghostview.

I tried also to do ps2ps to my postscript file, and then use the output to be
included in Lyx. This attempts make Lyx renders OK, print without error, but
only prints blank.

Any help on this? I could send the postscript files to see if someone can
